It would be very helpful if you would write the lowercase letter “i” that doesn’t look like the letter “s”.

Seriously! Before I played the video I thought it was S to the power of .40 plus S to the power of .50

Total agreement. It looked like an "S" with "fly spec" notation indicating a first derivative. As soon as you said it was an "i" in the intro, the problem was quick to solve. Perhaps in a past life you hand-crafted "illuminated" manuscripts?

OMG, I'm not even searching out these clips. But this must be the most well-intentioned, yet fascinatingly terrible math instructor on youtube.

@@keninnewmexico8763 I've learned a lot from his videos but there's way too much yappity-yap. Just get to the problem already.

The best way to look at this problem is with the knowledge that raising i to successive powers repeats after 4 raisings' i^1=i i^2=-1 i^3=-i i^4=1 so divide the power by 4 and use the remainder to determine (noting that remainder 0 is equivalent to a power of 4). After all this should be thought of as a problem in Complex numbers.

Yes, this. This will allow you to solve both even and odd powers of i. The method shown only works for even powers.

Looked to see what S^.40 + S^.50 is all about.

Makes sense, however; U neglected to remark on what IS: "? X ? = -16"

Lol, i thought this was some new math I never saw. An S with a dot over it.

The problem is really easy but I had to start the vid to find out what that S with the dot on top is ...

Didn't realise you were doing complex numbers because the i looked like an s. I prefer j to represent complex numbers!

i ^( 2 . 20 ) + i ^( 2 . 25 ).... so 20 is even returning +1 and 25 is odd returning -1 so the answer will be zero.

are the numbers .40 and .50.? If so, and for clarity, they should be 0.40 and 0.50 oh wait.... is it i^40 & i^50? YIKES!!

I think you are wrong!!! i squared = -1 ( NOT +1) So this problem has solution of -2 !!

Please draw the "i" better so that it looks like an "i". At first, it looked like an "s".

Terrible. Such an easy problem made to look so hard. Almost 5 mins bigging yourself up before even starting the problem. Anyone who has not heard of complex numbers won’t understand what you were trying to say.

would be nice if this guy's i didn't look like a 5 or an s.
