I followed you and watched almost every video you have made from the beginning. I am not sure if you take requests, and I wanted to suggest 2 topics that you can do well with your knowledge and expertise: 1. Aventurine dial watches at different price points. Which one would you choose and why? 2. With the demand for modern Rolex GMT II Pepsi's driving up prices, what vintage model offers the best deal for keeping great time, reliability, etc. I see the 1675, 16710, and other references and would love to see you do a comparison and choose one that you prefer.

Excellent overview from Teddy. My personal favourite is the military/field watch style(with date) for the simple reason that they indicate the time quickly and accurately.

Wonderful content Teddy. I would add the Calatrava and the pilot watch design. I’m not up on Pilots watches but the flieger design is what I’m referring to. I would substitute these for the Speedmaster.

Nice choice... Some proposals for part 2: Patek Calatrava (model for elegantno round dress watch), Blancpain FF (grandfather of second way of diver watch design, different from Submariner), Rolex Explorer, first mountain watch, grandfather of similar watches, often copied... In my opinion deserves more to be in this list than Gmt

Calatrava arguably more so than the nautilus IMO. And definitely the explorer more than the GMT. But recency bias due to hype certainly have moved the needle, and I can’t fault Teddy for omitting the Cala and explorer from the list.

A lot of folks have made the claim that the original Rolex Explorer II is often imitated, when I [an Industrial Designer] "ID Guy" and "Adrian Barker" have all stated that Rolex took direct design cues from the Glycine Airman for their original 1655 Explorer. So every so-called Explorer II inspired design is actually from the Airman in 1953.

I would say Oris for pointer dates. I know other do it but the Oris big crown pointer date is the first to come to mind for pointer dates.

I think the recessed 4 o'clock crown was first used by Seiko in its Seikomatic line and later adapted in its Seiko 5 line.

Great video. This is why it is irritating when watch enthusiasts complain or knock a homage watch or watch brand. So much of the watch designs really come from only a few watches. You could have included the Rolex Explorer, the flieger watch, and the Calatrava

I have a pretty old Citizen Promaster Diver with the crown at 9 o’clock. I think some people thought it was for leftys but I felt it was to protect the crown from damage or unscrewing it.

At the end of the day, it's a watch and there aren't an infinite number of possible variations that can be fit into what a watch is so yeah, sooner or later, the only way to innovate is to blend aspects of other watches or just copy them altogether. The reason that homages are legal is the fact that EVERY BRAND is guilty of copying another brand. For example, the Submariner draws inspiration from the Fifty Fathoms and the GMT Master is just a modified Submariner with a different bracelet. Eventually, every new design that can be made will have been made already and so even if you dream up a new design, it will have already been made by someone, somewhere. That's life.

I recently bought the new 62mas sje093 and I’m thrilled. It’s my first luxury watch if i can call it that with todays standards but it is to me regardless. The only other watch I want more is a sub (no date) but i’m not quite there yet.

I would add: Field watches - from the watches issued to US troops in WW2. Likewise for pilot watches particularly in the German side which had just two state-sponsored designs (unsurprisingly!). Sector dials, which I think started with JLC in wristwatch form. Nomos Tangente - crossing over between genders and popularising a specific minimalistic aesthetic. I would argue the case form with the greatly elongated lugs is still fairly unique though. I think there's a place to comment on women's watches as well.

The Tank, the Submariner, the GMT Master in my opinion are the most commonly copied or inspired designs. The Speedy may be to some extent. Even Tudor is inspired by the classic Datejust. Having said that, outside of Cartier, Longines does the Tank inspiration the best. Now the AP Royal Oak design copy seems to be catching on with likes of Tissot, CW, Casio and many more getting inspired.

One watch style which was immediately copied by almost *every* brand in the late 1960s and 1970s and which is hardly ever talked about - the Omega "c-case", supposedly a Genta design. Although there were other tonneau style casee before the Omega Constellation c-case, this particular style didn't really exist before then, and was ubiquitous in the following decade (and of course is still around today).

I'd say the Flieger is the WW2 Luftwaffe watch. A few original manufacturers are still making them. They simply keep time for navigation purposes. A pilot watch, to me, has many functions built in. I think of Breitling and their dizzying array of watches.

Pilot watches,by consensus,obviously aren't cool enough to copy.😂😅 Jus kidding. I'm just not sure there's really THAT iconic pilot watch that everyone is trying to knock off. If you know how to use the sliderule,than almost any pilot watch will do. But is a normal,non pilot person really going to use the sliderule?

Thats a common theme at all watch boutiques and photos. I’m not sure why but I can imagine it frames the logos well and just caught on

It seems to be the most aesthetically pleasing orientation for the hands in advertising, and several justifications have been asserted: -Frames the logo at 12 O’clock -10:08.30 presents near-perfect bilateral symmetry, and 10:10.00 produces a pleasing numerical symmetry. Both are used in advertising. -having both hands point upward orients the dial to look like it’s smiling. -the bottom half of the dial is unobstructed, presenting the finish prominently on the most flattering surface (light is also often sourced from the bottom upward to direct shadows away from the lower half). -people grew used to it.

The best thing to me about copied/homage watches, is that you can make versions that don't exist. I know I'm boring but my favorite watch of all time is the Submariner. I've always wanted a Titanium Sub and one with a Meteorite dial but Rolex doesn't make them. Well, others do and I now own version's of both these watches and am very happy about it.

Love the Nautilus! That's the only watch I approve of wearing an homage. Average guy will never own a 5711. A submariner or Datejust you can save up for and it can be a goal, but that Patek Nautilus is outrageous for a steel three hander with date.

I really cannot understand how anybody that understands the value of a mechanical watch could live with a Royal Oak. If the screws on the bezel are a fake, how can it be a well executed thing.
