10 OpAmps tested with HQ sound demo - Op-Amp Rolling -Find the hidden gem !
In this video I am testing following opamps:
Sparkos 3602, LHY Discrete Double Opa, Parallel NE5532, LT1028, NE5532, Staccato OSH-DHb, Muses 02, Muses 8920, Oracle 02, Burson v7 Vivid, LHY Discrete Double Opa
I record the sound samples with my Schoeps CMC6Mk4 Microphones and 32 Bit Float recorder.
In this video there is the same sound samples played on each of the Op Amps - 1 minute for each sample on each Op Amp

Shout Out to Great store where you can buy the Opamps in Europe - www.audiophonics.fr
My Listening session notes
NE5532 - overall good sound a benchmark for the opamps.
Sparkos - open nice reverbs of strings , rich vocals, nice energy, big precision, good transients speed, Musical character
Parallel ne5532 - Big scale, full rich sound with plenty of definitlion. Great immersion, Big heat generator Overall the best bang for the buck performer ;)
1028 - big scale, Nice well balanced Opamp
LHY Discrete - big bold rich but airy with great detail, big scale big size, analogue but not boring - very impressive, deep soft but controlled bass very musical
Stacatto -rich relaxed analogue, not as wide soundsage but good depth, not the best reverb in the air
Muses 02 - rich, organic, wide, decent soundstage, non aggressive highs, overall good opamp for making sound a bit more relaxed
Muses 8920 - rich but muddy, blurred, little reverb, big vocals.
Burson V7 Vivid - bold wide sound with reverbs, rich vocals, big air, tight bass great first impression quite wide soundstage, precise big vocals, in your face type of sound, musical character
Oracle 02 - nice colour, quite rich, a bit relaxed, full, nice separation nice air in the guitar, great for the price - 7$ Pricetag make it a definite candidate for a test
WARNING !!!!
Here is one comment (Thank you Kraken once again :) with expiation the paralysation of the Opamps, so test it at your own risk ;)
“If he literally just connected the legs of the chips, well, he was lucky. This op-amp survived that.
But don’t rush to accept a simple explanation as a recipe for all occasions. I insist that doing so is not correct. The total current consumption should increase significantly. Connecting the outputs directly is analogous to a short circuit. Most likely, in this design the through current of the output stages of both op-amps has increased significantly. But not to a critical value - operational amplifiers usually have an output current limitation. But increasing the current through the output stage usually has a beneficial effect on quality. In general, there are prerequisites for an increase in quality. But the method is barbaric."

Two surprises for me. 1st) The LHY Discrete, overall the best in all aspects, purer analogue amplifier is not possible, bass, mids, highs all there with speed and precision without hardening. 2nd) Parallel ne5532, no comments just one, just perfect sound for the price and much better than other competitors at 10 & 30x the price of this one.

This double opamp is very intresting! Back in the days, about 1975, I was a kid building hifi. At that time we had a magazine in Sweden called Radio and television with a lot of intresting drawings, do it your self things. I found a RIAA pre amp that I built and believe it or not. Designs was a lot of shitty transistors in parallell. In total I should say about 30. My RIAA had clearer sound and sounded better than my Kenwood. It also had a much lower noice level. I have tried to find that RT with no success. RT magazine have som public sources on internet. And yes, this double opamp really works and I was a little skeptic in the beginning but I think the difference is amazing! I can hear it and my hearing is not the best after listening to, to much noice in my childhood 😅. Keep up all the good work!

WOW - was NOT expecting the YT compression to make that big of a difference, but boy, was I wrong. I have listened to so many clips comparing speakers or other kit on YT and was impressed that I could hear a difference, so much so, that I thought there might be a slight difference but I was NOT expecting it to be THAT big of an improvement in SQ (sound quality). Just started the two, YT and G Drive after your pause and comment section, and the air in the G Drive (uncompressed) video was shocking compared to the YT video. I will watch both all the way through, but just had to stop and comment about the difference I'm hearing. THANK YOU!

Excellent work. Thanks for sharing. As for my experience, since I prioritize on vocals and don't have too much money to spare, I had used 2 pieces of Muses 02 op amps and 1 Oracle II, for my tube pre-amp (for Turntable) and use 5 pieces of Oracle II for my Douk Audio T8 Pro 7 band tube equalizer. That's all good enough for me. Cheers

It's great that you tested everything so quickly!! (paralleling of opamps) I understood the topic a little and in general this is not entirely correct electrically, what you said about high temperature is precisely a consequence of this. But it sounds!! also my audio engineer friend commented “If he literally just connected the legs of the chips, well, he was lucky. This op-amp survived that. But don’t rush to accept a simple explanation as a recipe for all occasions. I insist that doing so is not correct. The total current consumption should increase significantly. I'm scratching my head about the heat issue. There is only so much juice available in that part of the circuit, so, powering a sandwich of two OP amps, instead of one, should generate less heat, since two devices are using the same available power. Why is it overheating ? We need an electronics guru here

This time I waited for your conclusions in the video. I am amazed by the Paralell NE5532. The other one that stands above the rest is the LHY Discrete Double Opa. In the test you did with the new Fosi V3 mono I liked the Muse02 better, while with the ZA3 mono it was Sparkos. 👉A Paralell Muse02 can be amazing. You should try the same with OPA828.

I'm sure the op amps do indeed improve the performance. However, I must make a point that the rest of your system (DAC, Speakers, and upsampling to dsd 512 via HQ player) is what truly make these demos sound excellent, even with RU-vid compresion. Those in the market for an inexpensive amp, such as Fosi, will not be pairing the amp with $15k worth of speaker, dac, upscaling music server. I'm far more interested in comparisons of Solid state amps and dacs in the $2-5k range. I appreciate your excellent hard work.

Cool test, thanks. Do you think there's room to fit a small aluminum dip 6-8 heatsink on the Parallel N5532 op amps with the V3 Mono enclosure. If so, max height for aluminum heatsink? I guess you could try to get really crafty and fit a solid aluminum piece that would fit between the opamp and case, try to transfer heat directly to enclosure. tricky tho.

I have the Burson V7 Pros upgraded from their V6s. I experimented with the Classics and Vivids. For my DACs, I experimented with all four Vivids, all four Classics and two Vivids (LP) and Classics (I/V) and vice-versa. For me, I ultimately settled on the Classics (warmer) in the LP stage (filter stage) and the Vivids (brighter) in the I/V stage (driving stage). It's a great combo, and it would be neat to see a video by someone experimenting on mixing amps like this instead of just here are the opamps. Enjoy. This could be a neat video for you. Mixing Sparkos with Muses or LHY with Burson, etc.

@michaelschwader7944
@michaelschwader7944 Месяц назад
@beherit98 I see. It's cool to see that I'm not the only one to have that opinion. I initially had a Sound Blaster AE-9 for my custom-built PC, and I was curious about the op-amps. I did some research and found that they can change the sound signature, and that's when I ran across the Burson V6s. I decided to purchase a set of each for Vivids and Classics. I found all Vivids to be a bit overwhelming, all Classics a bit too rich. Classics in the I/V and Vivids in the LP lacked a bit of punch. When I reversed this, I felt it was perfect (for me, anyway). Later, I upgraded to the V7 pros, and it sounded even better. I was initially running with a pair of Audio Technica ad700x. I upgraded to a Sennheiser HD 6600S2, and that was even better. I have a 5.1 surround sound system in my room (Onkyo TX-NR6050 with Paradigm Cinema CT70 satellite speakers), so all I used the AE-9 for was headphones. Unfortunately, the ACM unit bit the dust a couple of months later. I decided to try their dacs. New to this, I purchased a demo unit (more than half off) of the Composer, believing it to have a headphone jack. I was wrong. I even purchased a set of V7s Classics. When I realized my mistake, I gifted it to my dad for his birthday/ Father's Day gift as both were around the corner. He, too, agreed on the orientation of the op-amps. I ultimately settled on the Playmate 2. I swapped out the op-amps from my sound card to my new dac, and I must say, it put the AE-9 to shame. I'm glad I switched. Don't get me wrong. The AE-9 is fantastic for a sound card, but I certainly didn't realize how much of an upgrade I was getting.

Even better if you get the two ic opamps stick a piece of copper tape on top of both oamps making sure they're not going to touch any of the pins except the ground pin and solder it to the ground pin. and you can leave a gap between both of them it shouldn't be a problem still enough room with the pins just about also putting a small polystyrene cap across VCC plus a minus of 0.1uF makes a big difference reduces inductance

@@VirtualHiFi Yeh, I bet the explanations got the techs in a twist. My guess is that its like Toppings Pre-90 Pre-amp where the design has Op Amps within Op Amps within Op Amps, which makes the distortion very very low. I just ordered a set of OPA828's today and as I need to layout a little PCB for them anyway (as they need a heat transfer pad underneath) I am going to double up the footprint so I can try paralleling two together. 🙂

Along with Parallel 5532 (which I've never heard of), the only other op-amp I gave a 10 on listening test was the Burson. I had a feeling that would be a sleeper... Paralleling devices is not a new concept but in this case some precautions should be taken. The LT1028 datasheet should have something similar. The example with the TDA1543 is not an apples to apples comparison. The TDA has a current output and when paralleled the currents sum up. In the case of an op-amp the output is voltage. In a perfect world the output would be zero if the input was zero but in real life the output has a DC offset that varies between units. Connecting them directly will cause due to the voltage difference even if it is just a couple of mV a high current flowing from one output to the other. In most cases this can be mitigated using balast resistors.

@@KeithHeinrich i'm so sorry, I didn't watch the video until the very end, I was dreaming that opamap would write names while I was playing opamps, so I didn't watch it until the end of the video, obviously.

Would be cool to try to set these up using true blind ABX testing, maybe with more amps and something like a Van Alstine ABX Comparator. Get a few people together, make a RU-vid video showing the process, results... Trying to listen through RU-vid on headphones just doesn't convince me, didn't even bother trying.

Thanks a lot for your work! Sad that there isn't Burson v7 Classic, because I try to choose which ones to order for my Playmate 2 and Arya Stealth. But it's not possible to include everything.

Did you try to parallel muses02 yet? How do you solder these without melting them?

8920 is nice but a bit lean an bass. I find LM4562 to be ideal. Discrete op amps are way overrated.

Sorry but if anything, the differences are very subtle. Listening thru headphones... I'll have to listen to your google file'd version... I believe you that you can hear a difference in 'real life' in front of your speakers, but not really over YT. I like the idea of soldering two cheap op amps... as an experiment... But how did your now $4.00 op amps compare to the more expensive ones?

I wonder what was your idea to record from an amplifier and loudspeakers rather than to plug to an AUX output directly in? E, B - premier league (and you've made something special to 5532 or made a mistake; most likely you've messed up B and I) F - special guest G, D, J - 1st division I, H, A, C - hobbyists PS The conclusions were made before I read the results, and I'm sure about B and I
