Ahh, the fickleness of trends! Spring and Summer brought us the "Cottage Core" with massive amounts of fabric in dresses with ruffles and now we have "Quiet Luxury" as if it is something new and trendy...I'm 71 years old and rooted in the classic style - Grace Kelly and Jackie Kennedy Onassis inspired me from the time I was a teenager and I held on to that style throughout my working years and now retirement...so nothing new here. I finally made myself a couture Chanel Jacket 2 years ago and love it....the best part of sewing with the best fabrics you can afford and with attention to detail is that you always have something special to wear "that exudes "Quiet Luxury" and if your mood strikes you to add the wild card to follow a trend in vogue, you can splurge on 5 yards of fabric and be "Cottage Core" for a day!

I was reared in the deep South. Although we weren't "Old Money" by any means this style of dressing avoiding anything that calls attention to itself and made of quality neutral colors was my style. Fortunately my mother and I both were able to sew therefore it was possible.

Justine Leconte indicated on her fashion channel that the push for this trend is from designers. She said that quiet luxury (or traditional luxury) is a byproduct of uncertain times. Designers reach back in their vaults for these tried and true styles when things are destabilized in the world as a way to counter the confusion and offer a sense of security. I found her comments very interesting. I’d guess that Tik Tok is running with what designers have identified as the trend.

Interesting. Trends in general are really about getting people to buy more. That's why fashion shows are so frequent, even though we could all be wearing classics from the 1960s and look great. 😅

Amazing video as always! I think this has really helped me in my journey to find my style because all of these really spoke to me. I do need a touch of colour in my life so maybe my style is more classic and quiet with a drop of rock & roll 😂 So I could totally see a neutral power suit with red shoes for example. Thank you for the inspiration!

Love this video. This is a trend I can get on board with. Some excellent suggestions. So glad you highlighted the Bella Loves Freddie jacket. I just got the pattern and can't wait to make it up. It's got a lot of steps so not a straightforward make but her instructions are impeccable. I love her patterns.

I love the quiet luxury trend....I am so over the gathered-tiered dress trend now....there is only so much wafting around one can do. I have taken notes, and photos of this video, and it will help me formulate my wardrobe going forward. I already have some beautiful pale blue (ex Max Mara) cashmere wool that I brought 4-5 years ago, to make a coat, but I have been terrified to cut into it and hadn't found a pattern that I wanted....again a quiet luxury look. However @VikkiSews has just released their Marcheline coat with a sew-along course which starts 25th October, and I think this will be perfect and completely follows your guidelines for this trend. So I am very very excited. Love your videos especially the sew-the-trend ones...(even if you have a typo in your video title...quiet not quite). 😜

First of all, LOVE your channel. I’m just blown away by your endless knowledge of sewing ready to wear. I would assume you’ve been sewing your whole life but the fact that u haven’t been is actually inspiring!! Ok second - I got a cover stitch machine (bernina) but I’m not sure when to use it 😳😬 like is it just for hems or can I sew everything together with it?? I’m making a skirt now. Do I sew the side seams with it? Or a “chain stitch”? Or just a regular stitch???
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 11 месяцев назад
I'm so glad to hear that you are enjoying the channel! To answer your question, you can use a coverstitch to do quite a few things. I mostly just use mine for hems, but you can also use the single needle (chain stitch) and sew garments that way (in place of a straight stitch). I know quite a few people do all their swimwear on a coverstitch as the single chain stitch gives them the stretch they need and is a little easier to maneuver than the serger!

I LOVE this trend and you have done an outstanding job bringing your version to the sewing community, Whitney! Mom always stressed the importance of acquiring the ability to produce a fine, tailored blazer/suit jacket and she was right! It took me years to be able to create one for my husband and then for myself but those skills are still with me today and I can honestly say, that with today’s patterns and you, Whitney, it is much easier to accomplish! Yes, lux fabrics are pricey, however, amortize that cost over the many years you’ll be sporting that gorgeous, camel wool blazer that fits you perfectly, and the cost isn’t so daunting after all! Because the Classic lines are part of my aesthetic wardrobe, I have my own favorite patterns, however, the ones you have chosen here are definitely worth a look especially the ones you have produced “sew-alongs” for on your Channel. I’m ready to tackle that classic overcoat pattern from Makers Atelier in a gorgeous navy boiled wool blend from StyleMaker fabrics now! ❤️

I have always been a classic style dresser, I inherited that from my mother, who sewed all her own clothes. She never wore long pants until she was in her late 50’s. I never wore jeans until I was in my 50’s. Lol. Those patterns are similar to the ones I’ve been buying in the last year ( I’ve started sewing again after 35 years).. no frills etc for me. Thank you Whitney for your hints and tips on everything to do with sewing and styling. 💐💐

Martha Stewart is an “old money” dresser…even though she didn’t come from “old money.” She was also a model in her younger days and always hung with many old & new money people and made a lot of “good old money” herself. If you take a look at her style and color choices, you can see it. And she wears a lot of the button-down/button-up shirts. I like those too…and let’s face it….they’re comfortable, often long and cover a “multitude of sins,” while looking more classy than wearing say, a roomy t-shirt or crew neck. And also recall that MS made many of her home dec, dishes and small appliances in that beautiful and subtle light teal color (there’s another name for it, but I can’t think of it.) It was her signature color. Now she’s long out of that business, much older and has moved on to licensing her name to other products (I think outdoor furniture?) And the designs, like the clothing she prefers, was/is minimalistic…without a lot of patterns and adornment, but well designed.

I like this trend - but it's that it's not really a trend! And further, that most of us probably have at least some of these looks in our stashes of patterns and fabric. I just re-made a bias slip skirt (with elastic waist) from a Vogue Elements pattern from 1998 - that I bought in 1998 and sewed it then, too. I used stash fabric and I'm wearing it with a slouchy sweater and sneakers.

Great video. It's possible to have a cruelty-free wardrobe since there are so many great [vegan] fabrics that are not animal based but mimic the qualities of wool, silk, etc. My wardrobe went "classic," understated, and neutral when I became a minimalist, only because you can wear certain garments in almost any venue. 😅 so it cut down on how many garments I owned. I wear a sheath dress every day and they work for pretty much any occasion except where you need a gown or are digging in the garden, and like June Cleaver, I vacuum in a dress. 😂 Love your videos. 😊❤

I am loving this trend…I am a Original Dior (1947-62) fan girl, but timeless classics really never go out of style…I actually appreciate the trend heads up, especially about the boxy jacket (only a fan of cropped boxy jackets with slim fitted bottoms like pencil skirts or fitted pants/capris…but that’s my 50s bias😢) and I also appreciate the pattern search! 🤗

"Quiet Luxury," "Classic," "Understated," are seamless aesthetics of "Old Money Classic." Other aspects of "Old Money Classic" include: "when seen from 8-feet, the print, stripe, or plaid should disappear." I'll add my thoughts: If you have a trendy print, stripe, or plaid, then choose the "Quiet Luxury" basic, design seams. If you have trendy design seams like 'cut-outs', twists, and color-blocking, choose higher quality fabrics in either solid color ways--neutrals or "Old Money Classic" understated prints, low-contrast stripes, and understated plaids, for instance.

Enjoyed your video as always! I'm with you though about color. I'm rather pale and have a head full of white hair, so I need color in my life. Although I love a good pair of tailored trousers and some simple lines, I think I'm a bit more "boho." 🤣 But I'm glad to know what the quiet luxury trend is because I really didn't know. So thank you!

Love these! I have NO autumn/winter fabrics (and far too many summer ones to buy any) in my stash but I do have some silk and lining fabrics and some sweatshirting so could conjure up an outfit or two! Also you reminded me that I love sleeveless tops with a turtle/polo neck. Inspiring as always with something for everyone!
