About this video:
In this video we look at some of my favorite plants to add to a landscape design, Perennial Ornamental Grasses! While there are many varieties you can choose from, I show a few examples I grow in my garden as well as some new ones I recently bought. I explain how you could use them to add a cool visual element to any area. Ornamental Grasses are such a valuable perennial in the garden for texture, color, visual interest, and even for Privacy! They offer a habitat for birds and pollinators, and are an all around must for your garden. Some of the plants I show are Hakonechloa grass, Fountain Grass, Blue Stem Grass, and even some grass like plants like Acorus! Do you grow any of these varieties in your garden? Comment below.

Hi Melissa! Thank you so much. I normally cut it back in late winter/very early spring. However, this year our dry hot summer made it look very dry and I didn't like the way it looked, so I cut it back to refresh it. But normally I would leave them standing through the winter beacuse they provide visual interest, and a habitat for birds, and polinators.

I’m normally not a fan of ornamental grass. It feels like I spend all my time trying to keep grass out of my garden that the last thing I want to is plant grass, but this video may have changed my mind! Might have to look into adding a few!

Thanks for sharing your insights into Perennial Grasses! They are essential plants to include in our landscape, especially if you reside in the Prairies. At some point in time before Urban Sprawl the Plains and Prairies of North American were covered in short and tall grasses. From an environmental viewpoint, we should not be covering our Grasslands with trees. We should be re-stocking them with Native Historic Perennial Grasses that survive winters, droughts, floods, buffering us from these catastrophic weather events.

@@charlesgates9814Bluestems are native to North America, especially east coast as that’s what I’m familiar with, check any quality nursery and ask for it. Blackhawk and Smoke Signal are nice varieties.

Hi Carolyn, Thank you so much!! I am pretty proud of this vid also. As for the Karl Foerster, its AWESOME. I absolute love this grass. The compact habit is what sold me after having a very large grass quickly outgrow its space. Now I want Karl Foerster EVERYWHERE lol. A group of 5 must be so gorgeous! I love the group of 3 I have here, and plan on doing some more groupings in a new bed I'm working on. I'll be dividing mine this fall to use in a new bed. Mine also got very browned, and dried looking this year, due to the very high heat and dry summer. I do think they could have benefited from a bit more water. I cut them back to refresh them, and they flushed out beautifully, I just missed out on the beautiful fall plumes this year. They will be fine! water them deeply to keep them hydrated until they go dormant, and then hopefully the weather takes over from there. They should come back next year.

The variegated sweet flag looks great, especially as an evergreen. We love our Karl Foerster grasses which we placed in our front garden to add more privacy. They're very easy to maintain and need very little watering :D

One of the most significant features of the Andropogons also known as Bluestem grasses are that they are NATIVE in North America which is why they are so essential to wildlife habitats. Many birds and insects use this grass during their life cycle. This genus of grass was here in our country long before us so we should do our part to replant them as much as we can since we have been losing so many due to our construction growth.

Mary, I'm just noticing this comment. How funny!! I have so many plants that my husband thinks are weeds. For a while he called my dogwood trees, "Hosta trees", he's come a long way. There are some grasses that look better, and less weedy then others. Hopefully you find some he can agree on at some point.

So many great choices! Love the 'ever' series of Carex. I have to keep mine in the fenced raised bed area as, around here, it's a favourite of the local bunnies. The sweet flag looks amazing! I've added it to my list ❤

Hi Margaret! Oh no so sad the bunnies eat it!! I've wanted to add some blue fescue grasses, but a local gardener friend says they eat her fescue! We just never know what they'll touch. I have bunnies, but find the most damage from the deer thus far. The sweet flag is great! If you can find it, I'm sure you'll love it.

I love all those grasses! A couple I didn’t know about so thank you for sharing. One grass ya might fall in love with is Karly rose fountain grass. It has lavender burgundy blush type plumes. I planted in front of a blue chiffon standard tree that looked kinda wimpy just cuz it’s newly planted. I enjoy looking at that grass with the blue flowers above it. So pretty! I always love seeing all your beautiful plants in the landscape. Such a wonderful inspiration!!

All Gold Japanese Forest Grass is one of my favs! I’m in zone 6a and using it in full sun (which is pushing it) but they still look good - slightly crispy at some tips but not bad. If you have a part-sun location, I bet these will look really fresh and full. I added mine w/ contrasting heuchera - groupings of 3 plants along the front of my border: eg a black coral bell, a burgundy / rose one (Primo series for both are tops!) and one of the gold forest grasses. Stunning.

Thank sounds beautiful!! I do think after a couple seasons the plants adjust and as long as they are getting enough water etc, they might get less crispy in those light conditions over time. Its always an experiment in the garden. Thanks for watching.

I wonder if your beach grass is actually a miscanthus? They get quite large with tan plumes. Very nice grasses but definitely for a large area.

🌵 We Live in the S.W. Desert. We Have Desert Landscape, including a Rock Yard. Not "Into" Floral's, but L💜VE the Grasses. We H-a-d "2" Beautiful Pampas Grass. There was "1" on each side of a Rock-Riverbed. The Rabbit's would even Stand on their Lil' Hind-Leg's to Feast on Them. Eventually We Removed Them. They Do "Shed" Their Nice Plummage, which Does Make a Mess as well. Now, Trying to Decide 🤔 WHAT to Replace Them with.

Great video, I have often admired that huge arching grass that you had to move in people's yards and I've wondered what the name is. I wish I had a spot for it. I have the Sweet Flag in our pond, it's beautiful, even though it's starting to get really big!

I'm pretty sure that tall "beach grass" in the video is some cultivar of Miscanthus sinensis ... "Maiden Hair Grass." I have a couple of varieties in our back yard. Some are bigger than others but all of them are pretty big. ;-) They have pretty seed plumes that will persist into winter and the grass makes a lovely sound when there's a breeze outside in winter.

In the past I have had problems with Zebra Grass and one other grass spreading their seed’s through my garden. Do you have any tips on controlling unwanted seedlings? Really enjoyed this video.

Hi there, I mostly just pull them out when I see them. Although I have to say in my garden the varieties i have ie. karl forester, the hameln, aren't invasive or spreading. I have heard some varities of the blue grasses can be this way. I actually got some daylilies from a garden fair once, that came with some of that blue grass seed, and i'm forever pulling it in one of my beds. I use a hori hori to try to get them at the roots, but they still pop up here and there.

Hi! Loved your video but I wanted to know the name of the tree close to your house, and how far did you plant it from the house?

Hi Beverly, is it the blue tree planted to close to the house? That is a Colorado Blue Spruce. I made a mistake by planting it too close years ago beacuse it was labeled incorrectly as a dwarf type of spruce. It is not, and therefore much too large for the space. It will have to be replaced eventually unfortunately.

Hi there! Yes, I believe it is the Neon variety of the Autumn Joy Sedum/Stonecrop since it has the more bright yellowish foliage. It was given to me by a neighbor, and I just love it!

It might be a misacanthus. However it was given to me, and the person didn't give me a name. In the comments misacanthus came up a few times.

Hi Carol, This was just a video showing different varieties. It wasn't a tutorial to show care and maintenance. However, I'm sure there are plenty of videos you can find on this information. Sorry to dissapoint you after all the effort I put forth in this video. Hope you find what your looking for.
