Japanese forest grass is called "Fuchi grass" in Japan. There are three types of them: golden leaves, white spots, and green. The wind grass in your garden is big, very splendid and wonderful. "Fuchi grass" means grass that knows the wind. Thank you for the video. I will use it as a reference for planting in the shade.

I tried the blue fescue last year in pots and it was beautiful all summer. Have ordered the zebra grass, and a wheat-type grass, and lemon grass this year to try. Am in S. Alberta, so should have some plants in common with you. Excellent video!
I have 105 variegated liriope in my garden in South Jersey! I use them to line most of my flower beds! They are the best! Can divide and make more! I usually plant plugs and in one season you can grow a full plant! The variegated liriope do not spread by rizomes ! Be aware that the solid green liriope has 2 cultivars! 1 is highly invasive, the others is not! Blue Lily turf is the none invasive cultivar!

I planted some in my garden yesterday (before doing my research) but today I’m here and almost cried when I discovered that they can take over your garden however I was relieved when I saw that they aren’t all aggressive, just a certain variety. I have liriope muscari super blue is it invasive?
Beautiful grasses..I have a burgundy Pennisetum plant by my mailbox..Next year I'll do one of my many rock gardens which is planted maybe 4ft from the mailbox off the sidewalk..I like the sound of grasses, Salvia's and white daisies..Thank you for bringing beautiful videos to RU-vid!!
Hey. I’m on the west coast of Tasmania Australia and gardens here are a challenge. You’ve given me some great ideas. I like soft and pretty and plants the produce spike flowers like agapanthus and bearded irises. But I can see that grasses might do well here. I’ll have to give them a go as I love their movement and graceful drooping. Thank you.
I have a lot of grasses mostly non invasive. Be aware of the Lirope I have is the dark green one. It was wonderful as a show piece but oh man does it run. I spent the day yesterday digging out the new ones and I think I am going to dig out the parent plant as although it looks great it is just too much work to control. MIne is growing right inside my hosta so they have to go.
For people in the Northeast zones who love the blue tones in a cold hardy grass - take a look at Blue Avena grass, otherwise known as Helictotrichon sempervirens, grows to about 4 ft., 5' with the seed heads. And Miscanthus 'Cabaret' for a cold hardy variegated grass. I'm in Zone 5a in Vermont - in that cold a zone, let alone Zone 4 here, many of the grasses in the video will die.

I just found your channel and I love it! Recently moved to northern Sacramento (Central Valley) from South Florida. Wow! What a difference. Needless to say, I need guidance. I realize I’m in a warmer and definitely drier zone than you, but your info/advice is wonderful. My challenge is finding things to tolerate 100+ temps and not a drop of rain since March. And then temps in the 30’s with rain in the winter.
I love ornamental grasses. My favorites are the Japanese Forest grass (so glad there's a grass for shade - I have quite a number of them now) and I also love Purple Fountain Grass. Sure wish it was tough enough to come back each year though. I have another grass that is perfect but I don't know the name of it. It's green with touches of reddish maroon, stands upright and has small airy feathers not plumes. Thanks for the video!

I love all the grasses i have a MissCanthus, Lirope, and pink Pompas grass i think is what its called. I have alot of shade in the back and ive been wanting to do a border of that Japanese forest grass for a while! Only one nursery carries it near me and its really expensive so ive got to save up for that. I live in Louisville or i would be buying some from your nursery. I also love Purple fountain grass! Love grasses, but many HOA will not allow, because fire hazard and home to mosquitos, nats, etc. Like them as accent plant, great filler. Not fond of too many grasses, freeze hard and take forever to recoup severe pruning. Some varieties are host for snail/slugs.

According to googles “how do you pronounce” tool, Liriope is lr-ai-ow-pee with an emphasis on the second syllable. That plant name gets me every time so I defer to just calling it lilyturf.
That's how I've always pronounced it too. I've had several clumps growing in full Missouri sun, zone 6 for years and they stay nice and tidy without forming a mat like the green monkey grass does
I noticed you have a dapple willow next the Japanese grass. Would love for you to make a video on growth & care since I planted mine over a year ago. It’s doubled in size & need to know how to keep it maintained.
We had a serpentine like that in a pot and I trimmed mine after about 3 or 4 years I did not like the serpentine shape so it looks more Asian shape now and I like it much better

Funny, I had always read and heard that liriope isn’t a true grass, but a good faker. It sure looks like one, and flowers are a plus! Glad to know there’s a variegated option for the shade. Can the Japanese forest grass handle DRY shade?

I have one called "Oat Grass" and it throws seed out and pops up wherever! It is a beautiful dark green and grows in sun or semi-shade, about 2' tall. Small clumps grow slowly.
A Mexican feather grass showed up under the liquid amber tree in front of the house last fall. No one in our neighborhood has any planted so this was definitely a volunteer via the wind or birds! Husband loves it but it’s competing for water from the other plants and tree in this area. If I can get it out it goes this fall!
I know this video is a almost 2yrs old, but I'm hoping someone who knows grasses could answer this question.... When I look at height listed on the plant's label, is that referring to the max height of the plumes when its in full bloom? Or is it referring just to the max height of the leaves/blades? I am moving to a sunny yard. I would like some ideas with which to fill up my sunny south facing back yard and north facing front yard. There currently is one dark red leaf 15 ft tree in the centre of the yard. So far my new to me yard has only one bush in the back side and a half dead cherry tree at the centre very back. There is an old wood plank sidewalk to the back shed. I am on Vancouver Island, so being deer resistant is a must and in zone 7. All my yard is visible to all my immediate neighbours, so I am planting (small now but will be huge much later) cedars along the periphery of my back yard. Any suggestions? Thank you
That sounds great! I'm doing something similar. I also live in zone 7, but in the southeast US. For sunny locations like yours, you should check out gardenias (evergreen), Indian Hawthorne (evergreen), perennial or bush hibiscus varieties, crape myrtles (not sure for your area). For quicker evergreen privacy screening, check out fragrant tea olives and hollys (chinese variety is probably the quickest), boxwoods and Japanese boxwoods look very formal and tolerate both sun and shade, but are very slow growing. For me, with a shady yard, I have to say that I love Camellias and encore azalea shrubs the best for their wonderful evergreen foliage and flowers.
