my personal tip is (with any garment you want to design yourself) to always start by knitting _at least one pattern made by another knitter,_ if not multiple, so that you can get a general feel for how that kind of garment is formed through knitting. it will help you understand both your tastes in fit/guage/style but also help you to more clearly understand a garment's structure and can teach you some techniques or tips you may not have known before. you don't have to follow it exactly--- even for my very first tee and sweater projects i diverted from the pattern i was using to make certain changes or do things the way i preferred--- but it's good to have instructions before you as a reference point! even as a very experienced knitter i still learn new things from patterns all the time!

wow - I have been knitting , especially cable designs, for 60 years - and have NEVER seen as lovely a balanced yet intricate design as your first cable sweater in the video. I have also never purchased *immediately* a pattern as quickly as I bought this one!! (in the middle of the video)! What a beautiful home you have, and love Kitty - ❤

Hello, thanks for the tips! Could you also make a video about how to choose types of yarn to go together? I mean, sometimes you knit with two types of yarn at the same time, how do they affect each other and the fabric? E.g. this yarn makes it more sturdy, this one makes it feel softer, this one is more elastic, this one is just for looks :)

I love the idea of getting inspiration from vintage knitting patterns. I had a couple of older knitting books from a Scotland trip that I saved for years. Other knitters that I showed them to did not understand. They said, "oh, these are so dated!" I tried to explain to them that the style of photography, the model's style of hair, makeup, and accessories were mostly what they were reacting to. They didn't accept it. But I still love vintage patterns. I feel they free me up to put my own twist on it by modifying the fit or changing up the yarn. Any little thing to make it my own.

This video is just in time, I recently bought Hitomi Shida's Japanese Stitch Bible to design a potential wedding dress for myself (inspired by your video!) and even though I ad lib my own garments a lot, writing out a planned pattern with complex details is daunting. On to the video!

A really good set of reminders for me. I am coming back to knitting after a 30ish year hiatus. I have most of the equipment I need, although most of my stuff is pre-circular needles (so much faster when you don't have to sew the pieces together!), but I had collected quite a few of the useful tools, like stitch holders in a variety of sizes, that needle size tool, although mine is pre-metric, and a box of old European knitting books in a box somewhere.... Look forward to retirement. I enjoy your podcasts!

Two things - one, I have that row counter, and I love it so much I recently bought a second one 😂 Two, my knitting tip is if you're using interchangeable needles (which I always do), and want to try on your project (or have the recipient try it on), take a needle off and use the cable connector to attach your longest cable to that end instead. Voila, you don't have to move stitches anywhere and it takes like 30 seconds. 😁
@andrabeta1971
@andrabeta1971 Год назад
I do the same. Also i put sleeves on hold on short cables using stoppers. Then i just attach short needles and knit. Plenty of different length cables in stash.

I also prefer to knit seamlessly top down. There are so many ways to knit top down : round yoke, raglan, raglan with saddle shoulder, japanese shoulder and so on. Never boring and don't have to bother will i have enough yarn for full length or both sleeves. Just try on and make 3/4 sleeves or crop jumper, or vest instead of jumper.

Greetings! This year, my wife is getting a cape that I've designed, and I'm currently working on it while watching your video. I'm hoping I'll be finished in time, as it is going to be 3.5 feet long and 6 feet wide (there needs to be enough room inside for a whole human being and a large bag). This is my first cape, and there is currently no written pattern for it, just a couple of pages of math (algebra was involved) and a chart for where to put the increases (6 every other row, 2 of which need to be nearly invisible, and the other 4 make fake shoulder seams). Anyhow, I'm at the point of the video where you're discussing collars on top-down pullover sweaters, and I have a tip: measure the forehead. I came to the conclusion last year that if your head doesn't fit, the sweater is useless, so starting with this particular measurement helps immensely. In my experience with hats, I know that in my case, an adult man's hat starts by casting on 96 sts using size 7 needles, so that's where I would begin. Of course, you have to adjust, given the type of yarn, the needle size, and your own knitting style, so be sure to make a test swatch first. Back to the video!

@catherinesybillegervais7341
I sewn a lot a zippers and by experience if the zipper is not sitting straight you have either too much fabric for the length of the zipper or too much zipper for the length of fabric. Not easy! I recommend: 1. ironing the zipper flat (the zipper tape might shrink a little bit), 2. wash your garment, 3. measure the opening of the garment and measure the zipper make sure they are the same length, 4. sew the zipper in the garment. Iron the garment. (You can also put a provisional basting stitch or sewing pins to help you.) Good luck! Love you videos! Always beautiful! xx

@creativian68

Congratulations on your first sweater. Don't be afraid of cables or any design elements. Buy a cheap ball of yarn and start to knit swatches (small squares) where you practise different things and see if you understand the pattern. This is how I learnt to do colourwork. I knit very tightly and struggled a lot with getting a smooth finish when switching between colours. When I first tested on some swatches I didn't have to unravel and correct errors when I then started on the sweater.

I was always afraid of cables...and sweaters. I tackled both last year and made myself a cabled sweater. Go for it! I found cables a lot easier than I feared. They look crazy complicated but I found them to be deceptively simple. Give it a try. You will wish you did so sooner. :)

Buy kids' colorful jump rings from the craft jewelry section. They are a lot cheaper and hardier than the typical plastic knit markers. For knit patterns with multiple sections with different numbers of repeats, chain several jump rings together to use as row counters. For example, if one section repeats every four rows, then chain four rings together. On the last of the four, add a couple more rings to signify that it is the end. Slip to the next ring down every time you come to it, until you've reached the end, then start over.

I totally agree that top down is better; especially if you have fitting issues as I do. I have narrow shoulders and a full bustline. So top down lets me do the fitting first and then I can relax and just relax and enjoy the flat knitting for the rest of the garment. Unfortunately, I do not know how to do this with traditional pieced garments. I am still watching this, so maybe there are some suggestions later on in the video. Cheers.

I have had very often this problem to have a nice wool, but the pattern, I would like to make with this wool, was written for another needle size. And OMG I should have known this earlier, that superwash wool is "growing" after washing resp. soaking it 😲 I knitted a wonderful Cardigan "Olivia" and loved it 🙄 aaaargh! It is so so much bigger than before... (why didn't I wash my gauge???) Next time, I will add an other (silk) yarn with this superwashed yarn...

I keep a knitting notebook! Anytime I knit, whether I am making a commercial pattern or designing something, I take notes about what I have been doing and jot down any changes I make. That way the next time I sit down to knit I can double check where I am in the pattern, and if I've made any adjustments to a commercial pattern to make them fit me better I can more easily revisit that pattern if I decide to use it a second time.

Hello! I just found you (from grocery girls podcast) & loved watching my very first video. Your tip bout adding mohair to Superwash is great! Wonder if the same would be for Suri alpaca? Mohair & I don’t get along. Looking forward to watching your other videos - thank you!!

Thank you. You are such a beautiful knitter. A question, do you have to use a second thread of yarn??, you use a mohair.? Is it yo give your sweater a softer texture.? It can get expensive.

Thanks for this video, it's really helpful!🥰 But what about adjusting the design to different sizes. If I design a pattern I will first, ofc, knit it for myself, based on the measurements of my body, but I am not sure how to determine other measurements. How do you o that? And what size charts do you use?

Enjoyed this video very much. I recently knit a vintage sweater from an old Workbasket Magazine. It is a bottom up pattern, each piece knitted separately. It fits very well except for the sleeves ... they are too wide for my shoulders and have a large poof at the cap of the sleeve which I don't like. I am going to knit it again but will use circular needs bottom up to the sleeves. before separating. Can sleeves be incorporated at this point? Thanks for any advice.

Yes, you could absolutely knit the piece in the round and after finishing the body you can leave the sts on hold, then knit each sleeve bottom up to the armhole and join both body and sleeves on the same cirucalr needle for the yoke :)

Hi Kika. When you shared the pro tip 6, the sweater that you did not use in your book. Please tell me what knot stitch that is. Is it Brioche, Fisher man's knit or any other. I like the simplicity, but as I am new to knitting, just started this year, I am quite confused
