10 RARE Video Game Abilities You Had to UNLOCK 

The hardest part about becoming a Jedi was for the first year no one knew how to do it. Eventually it was figured out that you had to master certain random professions that were unknown to the player. Eventually, Jedi and Sith Holocrons could be farmed and used to reveal a profession needed. As more Jedi emerged, the amount of professions required to master became increased server wide (as a way to slow the Jedi population) until eventually it was required to master all 34 professions. The system was totally changed multiple times afterwards, but this was the original system.

I remember getting 99% completion in FFX-2 because I forgot to touch Yuna, crounched and hiding while dressed as a moogle, right at the beginning of the game. Playing through the entire game a second time, just to ensure that you do that one little thing and get 100% completion, really makes you rethink your priorities in life.

on the bright side for the swg jedi unlock, it was so rare, that when you seen a jedi or sith in play, it was a major event on its own. literally in the most populated area, two force user started a fight with each other, the everyone just watched, it was only when one of them died that everyone realized, we could participate and not just watch. that is the effect, when you have a dozen or so jedi on a server of thousands or more, compare this to the "epicness" of everyone is jedi so noone is special way of every other game.

Hey!! Both my parents had Jedi in the Star Wars Galaxies MMO! When you said that game's name for number one I was unlocking so much memories so fast... They were so proud of their Jedi. My mom was also one of the last bio extracting classes or idk had the ability to draw blood from creatures and turn them into mounts, pets, and taxidermies. I was really young when I played that with my family.. but fond fond memories. And yes, before you asked, my parents were CONSTANTLY on that game when it wasn't shut down. Since the beginning of that game's release. Same with Everquest. (Which isn't shut down, but is sadly basically dead.)

I remember the good old days of SWG when you had to master specific classes/careers in order to become force sensitive! If I recall correctly, you had to master 4 careers, 3 already revealed and the last one hidden... my lil bro had to master every single one, the very last one he mastered was the one he needed while my younger sister got hers on the first try!😅🤣

Honorable mention: Okami's 100 stray beads collection, all of them are acquired from random side quests but when you have them all you basically unlock the bead necklace which makes you immune to damage, have infinite ink (game's mana) and deal x10 more damage with everything.

I actually remember having a roomate in Jobcorp who really loved Megaman and he spent weeks on Megaman Maverick Hunter for PSP and unlocked the Hadoken...but in Maverick Hunter you actually have to get through each stage and beat the whole game without taking damage to unlock it. I am still to this day surprised he did it and I think it's one of the most obscene unlock conditions for a secret.

The Fierce Deity’s Mask is easily one of my favorite masks in all of gaming. I was thrilled to be able to wear the set in Breath of the Wild. I hope my Young Link amiibo works as well in Tears of the Kingdom!

I had an entire notebook with pages of random notes and stats for raising chocobo's when I was a kid. Did the whole thing through trial and error because back then I didn't have ready access to the internet. It took me so long to figure out that when I finally got that first gold chocobo I nearly yanked my PS1 off the shelf by the controller cable I was so happy.

Arrow rain in Elden is amazing for placing status effects on large enemies and bosses. Great way to apply scarlet rot and poison or even sleep on the God skin duo. Easily one of the best ashes of war. It only uses 1 arrow and fires a barrage allowing you to really extend the use of status effect arrows.

Pretty disappointed to see people saying they don’t like jake doing countdowns. Falcon, Jake, and the team put in so much effort here. EVERY video is worth watching. Thank you gameranx 🧡

Actually after he teaches you all of the words the dragon from the soul cairn in Skyrim will fly around using shouts and summoning the shadow dudes from the soul cairn to fight with you. It’s kind of sick.

Knights of the Round in FFVII was definitely worth the effort to get it. Long animation, but serious damage, say 13 knights x 9999 each when maxed out! 😁

The sonic boom from Metroid Prime 2 was so artistically and graphically impressive back in the day. It’s hard to think of another weapon that looks like you’re literally shattering reality when fired.

I really like the idea of becoming a jedi being a really tough process I mean it's kinda realistic in that sense.

It was nice seeing two familiar games on this list: Majora’s Mask and Final Fantasy X-2. I definitely remember the grind for the masks but the task that was even harder was doing all the side quests in a single 3 day cycle for the sake of acquiring a heart piece.

Metroid had combos in the Super Metroid game as well. You'd charge your beam while having Power Bombs and a single type of beam equipped, (Ice, Spazer, Wave, Etc) and it would release a unique attack.

In the Megaman x part, you don't have to die 4 times, all you need to do is not take damage after that last checkpoint. I love your content!

Gotta love power boosters, they're great dealing with endgame bosses and just feeling overall op

The first time I played Symphony of the Night, I got a crissaegrim on my first walk through the reverse library. I just assumed all of the bosses were just easier in the second part of the game because the weapons were all so much better lol

1:48 "This allows you to summon the dragon for help, which costs a dragon soul every time you wanna use it." Actually, Summoning Durnehviir doesn't cost souls. It just takes 3 souls to fully unlock his Summoning Shout. And after the first 3 summons, he's a great summon thanks to his ability to Soul Tear your enemies and also summon Undead of the Soul Cairn to fight by your side. very helpful if you need to take out several enemies at once.

The gauntlet in God of War is required if you want to reach level 9 without moving to NG+. Also makes the Sigrun fight easier (since she is level 8).

I remember getting the Warlock mount upgrade in vanilla WoW was a nightmare. You had to unlock the quest, then farm a ton of rare expensive materials that were used to craft raid gear, then collect 3 items to use to summon a special boss at the end of one of the harder end game dungeons. Getting green fire was also a major achievment in Burning Crusade I think.

Fierce diety has got to be one of the most satisfying abilities to obtain, not just because of the ability you get, but because of all the other stories you get to experience in the process of getting it. Absolute best way to finish the game.

One of the rarest abilities in God of War 4 is the ability to beat the first draugr on GMGOW difficulty.

One thing that came to mind is unlocking the relic specific weaponskills in ffxi by finishing a relic weapon. Its alot easier now but it used to be a challenge that took entire alliance of dedicated end game players months for a single person to unlock.

The final version of Erde Kaiser from Xenosaga 3 comes to mind. Getting to this secret boss is a late game chore that takes a lot of time to accomplish. You have to fight Erde Kaiser at its best, and to deal worthwhile damage, you had to have the other Erde Kaiser summon abilities since the final form Erde Kaiser had barriers that could only be broken down by using a related summon skill against it. Otherwise you are cherry tapping and hoping you don't get killed. Emerge victorious, and you get the final form of Erde Kaiser to call on in battle whenever you wanted. This ability is so ridiculously overpowered that you can end any fight immediately just by summoning. Made more ridiculous if the one summoning is equipped with an item that reduces ability costs by 100%. You basically have a godly robot with a stereotypically sounding southern accent on speed dial that wrecks everything you fight with no trouble whatsoever.

Was amazed when I found that Ashes of war , and it was so cool to use it . Elden Ring is just full of Excitment and Rewards, and the shatterd gauntlet of ages has very cool effect and satisfying every time you use it

The Rain of Arrows is also guarded by the hardest unique golem.

The elden ring arrow rain i use as a utility in a way, considering the arrow it uses is the arrow you have equipped. Scarlet rot arrows, scarlet rot arrow rain... explosive arrows....

Don't forget that you can skip breeding for a gold chocobo by killing the Ruby Weapon and turning in the desert rose it drops to the Kalm traveller... As though that's easier especially without KotR...

I got the Thanos Gauntlet in God of War and didn't much care for it. I much preferred the time stopping one. Everyone does.

Oh my God! I'm quite a completionist, but looking at this list it just reminds me of the many wasted hours spent getting all of that stuff, like the GOW Valkyries, the dresssphere and golden chocobo... twice (ps1 and again on ps4). Thanks for reminding me I'm not the only person out there that was crazy enough to go through all that!

Sad fact about rain of arrows, it doesn’t let rainbow stone arrows activate, and it won’t do the usual aoe lighting effect when using it in water with lighting arrows which would’ve been awesome

I loved that idea about Jedi and Star Wars Galaxies.

Just reading the title gave me a flashback of when I played PlayStation Home. They had a hoodie you could only get by pre-ordering the infamous game. This would allow you to wear a reaper style hoodie from the Infamous game in PSH. At one point they had their own room to advertise the Infamous game in it and I saw someone with the hoodie and got super excited, haha.

I remember having those old game informer magazines and they’d normally come with a gaming card that has tips and tricks. Megaman X happened to be one of them which why I knew about it way back when.

Yakuza 0 is probably still my favorite Yakuza game. Also story is well worth it in Yakuza games. Great stories with lots of dramatic moments and often funny sidequests. Abilities aren't the worst to get what more then crafting great gear but that is decently covered sending guys out to get them compared to Yakuza 7's RPG which is much worse and they even toss the Mahjong cheat item that's in some of the Yakuza games. Fierce Diety is only a final boss mask so honestly the best mask is actually the bunny hood mask which takes many of the actual side quests in the book that will get you many other important things as well through it.

Metroid - I was actually thinking "Tell me she uses Guile's voice every time she fires." It's his signature move. Wouldn't have thought about the blue hedgehog, so you got me there. Hazard Neutralization does sound incredibly useful. Hopefully if I try the game at some point, the quests needed won't be too random to figure out - if the world is that big and I've never played the story I've actually never enjoyed the type of Devs that just assume everyone's GOING to want/need to look up exactly how to do everything. To me, a walkthrough is best done to be there if you absolutely need the help. It should never be designed in a game that you are not going to have a choice but to look something up.

Old SWG before it became a WoW clone in the CU was amazing. The whole Jedi thing was a prime example. Had to level specific trees to even get a chance to have Obi-Wan approach you about becoming force sensitive to become a padawan.

Jake countdowns are great, the different approaches they take to their lists are what keeps it interesting in my opinion.

The daichi katana from fable 3 fits this theme I think. it's hidden in a cave below a bridge that because of camera angles you can't tell you can jump off of, then you land in a relatively short puzzle dungeon that you could easily just leave without even noticing the puzzle locks. For your effort/awareness it's the best melee weapon available.

I think any of the slabs in deathloop would be good for this list because you need to get the upgrades for them by getting them multiple times. Super fun concept in my opinion even though it gets repetitive

You always have that one ability, that's a hard to memorize combo, but it ends everyone in the last hit. Or the ability wipe out everyone in a single blast

In Xenoblade 3, the side quests to unlock the "secret" character and get hazard neutralization isn't complicated. Basically, just progress colony 4 and city side quests until you are attacked by invisible robots (this also happens once during main story near Tau) once you've completed those 2 side quests, a '?' appears in a cave in Upper Aetia, that is the hero quest.

If I recall for Mega Man X and X2, you needed all armor pieces, all hearts, and all e-tanks to get that capsule to spawn. Same in X2 for the Shoryuken along with some other caveats like getting all of Zero's body back. This is just my recollection as I haven't looked it up in ages.

The chocobo thing was bugged on my playstation I have tried every thing they said with every item and I never got one by breading, the only way I got one was by killing the ruby weapon and sell the rose you get to a guy in a little town. I had black chocobo with 290 speed and 999 stamina and nothing even my standard chocobo was like 180 speed and 999 stamina. It was really fxxx up that this was so hard to do. Hope in the new game if it ever comes out it gets easier.

The way falcon pronounces japanese is just the absolute worst.

I actually had a lot of fun breeding and racing the Chocobos in FF7, and being able to smoke Joe and his Black Choco.....that son of a biscuit.....setting me back......trying to lvl up this wonder choco bro

Getting the Golden Chocobo was actually fun for me and it was fun to run basically all over the map. Plus Knights of the Round is friggin awesome!

An indie game called shattered pixel dungeon has a secret ability. After defeating the dwarf king and taking his crown back to the rat king he will give you the power to turn enemies into rats.

I audibly groaned about getting the Fierce Diety Mask in MM. Now, it's not like I didn't enjoy getting it, but it is the most time sensitive grind ever, especially doing Anju's storyline. I was upset to get it at the end of the game, but at the same time it was great fun to use!

I was a Lead GM for SWG and can probably share this secret by now: The reason it was incredibly difficult is that it wasn't actually in the game at launch and (presumably, I was not a dev) had to build it all down and used timesinks to buy time. Same thing happened with Plane of Earth (iirc) in Everquest, which was unbeatable on purpose because Plane of Time wasn't done.

I wish star wars galaxies still existed and it was still rare to see a jedi.

Im surprised the Magnus Sisters summon in FFX isnt on this list. It also requires a convoluted quest completion requirement and is obscure but insanely powerful if you go through with unlocking them.

Oh man, I did that same thing with the golden chocobo back in the day. So many hours dumped into that ... but so cool to use Knights of the Round.

The misinformation in number 9 alone was crazy: 1) Summoning Durnehvirr doesn't cost a Dragon soul every time you use it. 2) Durnehviir attacks enemies normally after teaching you a word of soul tear; he doesn't simply teach you the shout and "do nothing" as stated. 3) Soul Tear's cooldown twice as long as Unrelenting Force with all three words, so it's definitely not shorter than "the ol' Fus Ro Dah".

I remember getting the Knights of the round summon, god that was such a chore. Hope they at least make an appearance of some sort in FF7 Remake.

I just played Yakuza 0 a few weeks ago and it was easy enough to unlock Dragon of Dojima but Mad Dog of Shimano style was a total pain for me. So bad that I just gave up, never upgraded the Dragon of Dojima style fully either, it's pretty powerful on it's own.

The Golden Chocobo was the first time I had to sit down with a guide to accomplish something in a video game. My grandma had to buy me the FFVII strategy guide, after I had already pretty much finished the game. And I remember thinking the Knights summon materia wasn’t even that great once I finally got it.

I do remember getting the Hadouken in Mega Man X. I don’t remember what I had to specifically do, but I remember thinking it was a great ability and nice reference to one of Capcom’s other hit franchise 👍 I also must have done the Golden Chocobo in FF VII, which I don’t quite recall, because I did have the Knights of the Round summon. I couldn’t have beaten Emerald Weapon without spamming that summon 😪

Rain of arrows in elden ring is actually insanely powerful if you use it on a certain bow with the right buffs/spells it will rain down these really powerful great arrows that will stagger almost anything they hit and can just completely decimate everything in its path, even in pvp you can just destroy people cause it's so powerful and most players aren't expecting it

Despite the restrictions, the Fierce Deity transformation was a great reward for collecting all the masks.

Cybernator on the SNES, there was a special Napalm weapon that you could get if you beat the first level without shooting any enemies except the boss. It could then be upgraded if you beat the second level same way

My first playthrough of Majora's Mask I had the guide and collected every mask. The Fierce Deity mask helps so much in that last boss fight.

The pain in your voice when you said, "The reason I know is because I have done it." I think we have so felt that pain, to some degree, in our lives. Grinding for this or that.

I loved Star Wars Galaxies, the only MMO I ever really went all out for. It's hard to understate how crazy it was to run into a player Jedi in the early days. Even aside from that, the game was really ahead of it's time in terms of player-built/run economies, shops, and services. You could be a baker, a physician, an armorer and more on top of whatever combat class you liked. Almost all gear and items were player-made. Player guilds ended up being really fun as everyone tried to find a niche for them to provide some kind of good or service to the guild as a whole. Too bad the combat was fairly tepid early MMO spamfest and the game got re-balanced so literally anyone could be a jedi from the get-go at character creation lol

Obtaining the Knight of Round summon in FF7 was the most satisfying thing I ever felt in playing RPGs. I didn't even care how long it would take to MASTER the Materia after I got it. Just awesome to be able to use it especially before nearing the end of the game.

it doesn't cost you a dragon soul to summon Durnehvir. It only costs you a dragon soul to unlock each shout word, same as any other shout.

In the first Ori there's this underground level, almost completely dark. I completely avoided it thinking I needed some special ability to get there, and before you know it I'd finished the game. Then I revisited this place and found out there were two super cool abilities (including some kind of dash) that you learned in this place. It would have made the ending rush so much easier...

I can also say I have actually gotten the golden chocobo in the original final fantasy 7 on Playstation back in the day. Probably my proudest gaming moment ever still to this day

I love seeing people say the last boss in Majora's Mask is one of the hardest in the game because even on my first playthrough, I got all masks, used the Fierce Deity and slaughtered all three forms of Majora's mask within five minutes. It was such an easy fight with that mask that I thought it was intentionally easy for some reason.

What about Maskados from SMT Nocturne: you have to collect all 24 other Magatama (which can be a pain in of itself), get a special sword then go to a special site on the map to a unique dungeon to fight five more bosses to unlock. Its basically mandatory for doing a True Demon Ending, but if you weren't looking for it it's very easy to miss.

The Mascot dress sphere was really powerful though because it had Ribbon as its ability. As in, the Ribbon that makes you immune to ALL status effects. Most FF games typically only have like one of these as an item, and this made it so you could just have it as a power. If you wanted to play the final 99 level dungeon, you pretty much had to have this.

I nearly lost my mind fighting the Queen, it took me 100+ tries. Also x-2 is my all time favorite FF game.

I can't help but think of stop n' swap in Banjo Kazooie. I know it never got used for anything, but getting those eggs and the ice key was a weird process.

I remember when the grumps first played majora, then I remember when it was teased to be coming back. Then arin got the final mask and beat majora with no effort or even a lost heart, and I loved how he got upset about it and replayed the battle without that mask lol

It's not an ability but I remember unlocking all the Ultimate weapons in FF-X, the one for Lulu you had to dodge lightning 200 times consecutively in the Thunder Plain or whatever. I did it on console back in the day and it took forever, it was super tedious and you couldn't do anything other then just sit there staring at the screen since it's random and easy to miss the prompt.

One childhood gaming achievement was getting the Hadouken

if you're talking about Galamoth in Castlevania as the hardest boss you're quite mistaken, literally the only thing you have to do is wear the circlet that heals you with lightning damage and it's an extreme breeze; he literally heals you the whole time. Not to mention that the poison mist is definitely not useless, it shreds annoying enemies such as imps while being 100% invulnerable and finds & breaks secret walls you happen to pass by

You can use Soul Tear on Giants and Mammoths, so that can be a lot of fun. I did both the Fierce Deity Mask and Megaman X Hadouken bonuses back in the day. The former definitely was a pain. The latter was not really worth it. You forgot to mention that to use it, you need full health (EN) bar. Granted, you can have energy tanks that sort surplus health to use later to fill you up if you're say, fighting a boss and want to use the move on them but aren't at full health.

In the American version of FF7, there is an alternative way to get a gold chocobo without doing the tedious raising and breeding method. Defeat the Ruby weapon, which is an extremely tough battle to begin with, take the Desert Rose item to the old man in the upstairs apartment in the first town after Midgar (I forget its name now). The old man will give you a gold chocobo in exchange for the Desert Rose.

Interesting countdown. Honorable mention to this in my mind is Dragon Soul in Dragon Quest VIII. Massively overpowered (hits hard and completely ignores defense). Not hard to get, necessarily, just tedious. You get it on the hero when you reach 65 after a full 33 levels of not getting any other spells. None of the characters get spells after the low 30's actually, besides this one.

The Haduken is nice to see, shame I never see anyone mention the Shoryuken you can learn in X2. While not as broken as The Haduken, it's still fun to watch X pull it off.

Breeding Final Fantasy 7 Gold Chocobo was really a tidius but so rewarding experience, and it was only a stepping stone, I remember playing on PlayStation as a kid...

it's funny the one that stood out the most for me was the bonus mention gold chocobo as I didn't find that all that hard, the breeding method isn't that bad if you know which birds to breed and nuts to feed them, but if you didn't want to deal with breeding and racing, you could challenge Ruby Weapon which drops the Gold Chocobo Voucher. Granted that means fighting Ruby Weapon.

The Haduken is a slight bit easier to get in the PSP remake of Megaman X as all you need to do there is have all upgrades and go through Armored Armadillo’s stage without getting hit which you can just cheese with a full power Rolling Shield.

I remember the Star Wars one. That was about 20 yrs ago. I gave up that game after a few days. Utterly insane grind.

The irony of requiring you beat the hardest enemy in the game, just to unlock the best ability, is not lost on me.
