The Tie interceptor was being adopted to replace the regular tie fighter. It can use shields and missiles. Unfortunately no weapon can get through the rebels plot armor.
@nickgennady
@nickgennady 2 года назад
Let’s be honest. Group of several standard Tie fighters would destroy x-wing without plot armor (even 1v1). We seen regular tie fighters 1 and 2 shot x-wings which makes sense as they have stronger lasers. Also Being faster and more Maneuverable beats shields in my opinion. The interceptor is awesome upgrade but not really needed.

Judging by craft like the A-Wing having shields the Weight/Mass penalty was not that severe so you would be forced to see as a pilot how utterly disposable you are as a pilot that the empire would not spring for shields. Of course as a rebel pilot I wouldn't want guns on my ship that could not tear through an enemy ship of similar size in 2 hits on target anyway.

More and more, I get the impression that the standard TIE fighter was a "fighting the last war" sort of design. An outgrowth of the ideas behind some of the best Republic-era interceptors, the TIE is great for running down pirates and hunting insurgents that don't have sophisticated anti-aircraft defenses, and is so inexpensive and low-maintenance that just about any model of light cruiser can host at least a few. Perfect for a government interested in extended peacekeeping, anti-smuggling, and anti-piracy missions. (As a side note, being able to field them just about anywhere like that is the _real_ advantage of inexpensive ships. Being cheap to replace is helpful, but being cheap enough to bring them along as a matter of course in the first place is what really counts.) The basic TIE design is less effective at fighting an open civil war against an organized, well-equipped Rebel Alliance. When Rebel units began fielding advanced fighters like A- and X-Wings, the TIEs still tended to give as good as they got, despite having lighter weapons and thinner defenses - but as the saying goes, fair fights are for suckers. Cue the rapid development programs of newer and more capable Imperial fighters. The X-1 Advanced that Vader flew, the blisteringly fast and heavily-armed TIE Interceptor, or the face-wreckingly powerful TIE Defender - many gamers described it as the "God-mode fighter" in the old TIE Fighter flight sim games - were all responses to the arrival of powerful Rebel fighters that started showing up and giving standard TIE fighters problems.

The tie fighter was specifically designed for the pilot. Tie fighters had amazing speed, maneuverability, and did a lot of damage. The reason it had no life support was because it would make the pilots do there best and not just let themselves get hit because they think they are invincible. So the only reason they did that is because their pilots were way better than the rebel pilots and if they did there best they would be unstoppable.

@XxJay71xX

@@williampolmanteer7844 also the main reason why people hate the tie is "du it doesn't have shields" welp... rebel ships have some shields, doesn't seems to help them that much when they're not flown by characters protected by the plot... also, the lack of an hyperdrive isn't such an issue when you take into account the fact that TIE are a defensive weapon, indeed: the empire and it's ships already control the galaxy, and are already well established almost everywhere, so they don't really NEED hyperdrives on fighters that are already pretty much on the front line.

I love the guts and glory approach of the Tie fighters, their desire for firepower and especially maneuverability and relying on skill rather than equipment to keep them alive. Throughout the Empire however, both in the pilot corp and the storm trooper corp, this entire "hunger games" approach where they weed out the weak and try to destroy relationship between soldiers rather than foster camaraderie, seems very stupid and I can only really explain it by poor writing... Even the Nazis put HUGE emphasis on the band of brothers and that officer from Star Wars Rebels going "No friendships in war, only victory matters" is just mind baffling. That's not how you train soldiers, that's how you train gangsters... And they should KNOW this. So it really just strikes me as bad writing where they want to give the empire no redeemable qualities.

Wise of you for saying that...if they cared about each other to some degree they would of done alote better and is true thats how you train gangsters because they always kill thier own or betray them...but i guess the empire didnt want any body having friends to chill with but i think some pilots and others such as stormtroopers were friends in a low key manner they must have share jokes and laugh with each other at some time...even the police have fun

Yeah it's a completely messed up cost benefit analysis. lets say a shield generator adds about 10,000 credits to the price of each TIE, however in return you increase fighter and pilot survivability which saves credits on, 1. Replacement fighters, 2. Replacement pilot training and equipment 3. Whatever measly payout the Empire has for the families of lost servicemen. Not to mention the non-monetary benefits such as Improvements to unit morale and experience gained by pilots who survive their engagements that can train new pilots, improve naval doctrines and even help improve on the design of future fighters.
@casbot71

@@lordfrostwind3151 And also lethality of the fighter. Shields mean that pilots have the confidence to take riskier shots and pull them off by not being dead. Tie fighters remind me of the Zero fighters from WW2. Not entirely sure, but weren't most pilots samurai, who didn't see the danger of an unarmored ship, instead focusing on its speed, handling & firepower. I'm guessing tie fighter pilots training made them have a similar viewpoint.
@lancer737

@fulcrum2951

The zeros problem was that they lack the self sealing fuel tanks like the US counterpart, the fighter is on an even match though as it is the pilot that made their weapons effective Also there are many other types of fighters the japanese are trying to produced and some of them were on par with the US counterparts but were faded into obscurity
@Segalmed
@Segalmed 5 лет назад
At the time of introduction the ZERO was superior to anything it could expect to face. The extreme light-weight construction allowed high performance despite the rather weak engine (on that Japan was quite behind other countries). Also it had an unbelievable range for a fighter (the pilots learned to fly with maximum fuel efficency and even on occasion removed equipment like radios to to save on weight). This allowed them to surprise the Allies on several important occasions because they were believed to be far out of range. The problem was that the airframe was maxed out almost from the start and thus could not get the steady improvement possible for the typical Allied fighters (the German Messerschmitt 109 suffered from a similar problem, although not to such extremes). Like the Germans (but even more so) the Japanese selected the best of the best but had no system to replace them quickly. The few pre-war trained pilots that survived had each a very long kill list as a result (and some top aces did not die in combat but e.g. testing newly developed fighters that proved to still have design flaws or as passengers in unarmed transport flights intercepted by US fighters ).
@tba113
@tba113 5 лет назад
If I understand things correctly, most Imperial Japanese pilots were not full-on samurai, since that was linked to lines of nobility vaguely similar to those used in parts of Europe - but you didn't need to be an actual samurai to follow their warrior code of _bushido,_ and the pilots certainly tended to see themselves in that light. The parallels between samurai and knighthood, or between the codes of chivalry and bushido, are not exact, but they fill similar roles - and both Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan were pretty keen to play up the similarities between their own troops and those old heroic images.
@merobo5066

I think it's also important to bring up that most planes weren't particularly well armoured, one of the few I'd consider actually armoured (as in more than maybe a relatively thin plate behind the pilot and bulletproof glass in frond of the pilot) would be the IL-2. The aforementioned lack of self sealing fuel tanks were a more significant defensive weakness than the lack of armour.

The shio that normally wins in dogfights is the one that sees the enemy first. Surprise wins 99% of the time. The famous Red Baron WW2 pilot said that if he didn't get the drop on his target he used his plane's powerful engines to escape into the clouds. Which is a huge problem for the TIE fighters - no visbility. The rebel ships have large canopies on the top of the ship, giving them 360⁰ visbility. When the scanners aren't working in the trench run, what do they do? "Pick up your visual scanning!" TIE Fighters have tiny, front canopies, no vision to the back, and giant steel panels on the sides even if they had wider canopies. They often would never see the ship that killed them in a dogfight.

I made a rather lengthy response... But it seems to have disappeared. Anyway, in short summary, the TIE Fighters were practical and should have easily beaten the Rebels. Experience and maneuverability can easily beat durability, especially when starfighter shielding usually was not too impressive. I hope that folks do not look down upon the TIE Fighter just because the movies portray them as incompetent. Deus Ex Force is a very unfair plot device, heh
@Terenin
@Terenin 5 лет назад
@@spartandelta2756 To make matters worse, they DID get better craft. TIE Interceptors were direct upgrades over the fighter and was piloted by fighter pilots that survived - by skill or luck or both - a specific number of missions in their craft. Then if you survived enough runs in the Interceptor, you were awarded with the right to fly TIE Defenders, the single most able and lethal fighter of it's age. TIE Defender pilots were extremely experienced, skilled, loyal to a fault and were operating the most powerful fighter around. Luckily for the Rebels, there were only so many of them to go around.
@spartandelta2756
@spartandelta2756 5 лет назад
I tend to agree that the Alliance lucked out by not having to face TIE Defenders too often. In Star Wars: TIE Fighter, those things could outclass anything the Rebels had and then some. I am unsure of how they perform in the new canon, but my understanding is that they would still dominate space with ease. *Shrugs* I guess when it comes down to it, the Rebels really had fate on their side (Deus Ex Force) and only won due to coincidence more than anything else. Many of their pilots were good, but dogfighting is usually more about speed and maneuverability, which the Empire had on their side more often than not in combat engagements.

You have mentioned in several of these series that windows are unnecessary in a space craft where you could use sensors and VR. You are completely correct, but sensors and VR systems can fail or be damaged in combat. The windows are a backup plan; if your sensors fail for whatever reason, having windows means the pilot can still navigate safely. Its not combat effective, but it is enough to run away. In the legends X wing series of games, all of the fighters were equipped with sensors to "see" in all directions via radar, and you actually do use a HUD. If those sensors were damaged though, which could happen in the game if you got hit, you could still fly. It did make things a lot harder, but not impossible. I would argue that having at least one forward window of some sort in any starfighter, or any small vehicle for that matter, is absolutely essential. It might be a flaw, but removing the windows would be an even bigger flaw. They can potentially be concealed behind armor panels - and on some large capital ships there were panels of that sort (we see this in episode III) but windows are essential as a backup in case the sensors fail.

In the Soviet military you didn't send reinforcements to save threatened units, you sent reinforcements to the forces that were achieving the objective. Sounds cold, but unlike the Empire from Star Wars, the Red Army survived its major combat test.

One would think that a conformist aviation program with an abundance of pilots would emphasize a wingman system and coordinated attacks. However going off the video, the TIE pilots were groomed to be look out for number one. It's not a particularly realistic system for a fighter program.

@@Shadx27 Basically this. A lot of the Empire's flaws come from the ridiculous way they absolutely *have* to be the most ridiculously evil, even when it clearly gets in the way of efficiency. The Legends continuity at least allowed for some flexibility and most of the time didn't feel the need to make every little thing the Empire did evil for the sake of evil. But the official canon? If you were to put that Empire on an alignment chart, they'd fall squarely under Chaotic Stupid. They're "similar to Nazis" by design so clearly every single thing they do must cause the maximum suffering for everybody involved.

#7 is actually a big one that you pointed out. Flight time, even in a sim is crucial, especially in a craft like a TIE were there's little margin for error. I doubt the rebel pilots had good opportunities for simulator combat and most of their flight time probably was either mundane patrol or actual combat (very risky) whereas a TIE pilot (with the resources of the Empire) could potentially have constant flight time and the ability to learn from making deadly mistakes in a sim. Another factor is that they were trained to fly their specific spacecraft, whereas the rebels seemed to simply ask if they had ANY flight experience, even if it wasn't relevant to an X-wing, Y-wing, etc and plopped then in a fighter. In the real world, there are specific aircraft certifications for a reason *cough* 737 MAX *cough*. Sure, a Cessna pilot could jump on a F-22 Raptor and have the basics of flight down but the difference in engine start up, the cockpit layout and handling of the aircraft is going to be wildly different. They'd be clumsy at best and slow to respond until they've done it and made a few mistakes along the way (and hopefully lived to learn from said mistakes). Just the fact that Red Leader asks Luke if he's sure he can handle the X-wing makes me wonder who in the world they just let fly for them, and what if Luke got up there and couldn't handle it as well as he thought? This isn't as much of a plot hole in Luke's case as it's been said the T-16 and the X-wing had similar controls and both produced by Incom Corp but that does say something of the caliber of people they're willing to bring on board and gives credence to the fact that the rebels were desperate for pilots, even if someone's flight skills flat out sucked. The Empire on the other hand, could afford to be choosey and select the best performers. I mean, we don't make fun of TIE fighter accuracy do we?

The Empire should have had since the beginning the wastly superior TIE Advance and TIE Defender in big numbers and assign them to the best TIE Fighter pilots. Not only it would have helped the Empire to keep the best of their best alive and make them fullfil their full potential with worthy weapons but would have made the rest of pilots to keep improving.

Game 007 Sorry, no. Elements of the empire were modeled after NAZI Germany (stormtroopers). Palpatine was definitely modeled after Hitler. WWII Germany used smaller technological forces to out maneuver larger forces. Then the larger, outdated forces would come in to hold the territory. That sounds more like the rebels. Cold War USSR doctrine used large numbers of less sophisticated forces to overwhelm the enemy. Their economy was based largely on government/military. I think you are forgetting that Lucas grew up at the height of the Cold War. Safety videos were shown to inform the public of what to do when the Soviet Union launched a nuclear attack. Space Race. The USA was backing rebels (and governments) all over the world to stop the spread of socialism. The Soviet Union was backing rebels and governments all over the world to spread socialism. If you wanted to know who the evil empire was, you only had to turn on the evening news. But we all know the news is just propaganda.

I think the philosophy of the TIE fighter pilots were "If you're not good enough to dodge the enemy fire you don't deserve to be alive" And now I can't stop laughing at the idea of a pilot (or a group of them) defecting to the Rebel Alliance, and when they're found removing the shield generator from their ships and being questioned about and the former TIE pilot replying "If you're not good enough to dodge the enemy fire you don't deserve to be alive" and then not understanding why do their new comrades have an expression of pure undiluted shock, fear, concern and utter respect for their newest recruit(s)

To be fair, whenever we see them, even rebel starfighters are reduced to scrap with a few blasts from a TIE's laser cannon. So it's not like their shields matter. Whenever we see TIEs firing at the rebels, either the TIE fighters' laser cannons blow through the shield quickly, or they hit something sensitive and send the rebel fighters plunging to their deaths. That squad of fighters Hera brought to Lothal got wiped out by a swarm of TIEs, and we see TIEs being rather effective at mopping the floor with the rebels in the Battle of Yavin. That's why only a handful of ships escaped the Death Star's explosion. They started with thirty. They had less than five when it was over. Heck, I even tried using a TIE Fighter in Rogue Leader's Battle of Yavin, Imperial version. All you need is to corner and tail rebel starfighters and pump enough fire at them to blow them up. So long as you're good at avoiding fire and tailgating the rebels, your single TIE can wipe out a dozen rebel starfighters.

The Empire's strategy reminds me of WW2 Stalin philosophy: quantity has a quality all of its own.
@rpk321
@rpk321 4 года назад
But Unlike Stalin, he failed completely at making effective use of the strat. The early T-34s for example were poorly constructed and made with scrap metal, with the only thing good is the gun. Given to poor patriotic conscripts. They die in drove. But among those that die, there are those who survive and prevail, and were later given the best possible (well-constructed with proper technique and material) T-34/85 and IS-2. In one story, there were a T-34/85 commander (and crew) that managed to kill 3 Tigers in one single engagement by making good use of the T-34 equipments, environment and positioning... The Emperor failed to use his best of best of best pilots...By putting them in Subpar design more meant to be used by conscript.

@Shadx27 5 лет назад
Though one thing I would make Maarek fully aware of. The Empire has well trained pilots, but the tactics, ships, and lack of flexibility greatly hindered them. He was so good, he eventually got to speak (though carefully) his mind on the subject. Thus you see the empire more looking at Tie Hunters, Tie Avengers, Gunboats, and Defenders latter and with more flexible and WINNING tactics. Maarek and his first mentor, Admiral Mordan, would have HATED Tarkin's doctrine. Good for scaring, BAD for war. Since Maarek shows up after the battle of Yavin, the Empire did start looking at Tarkin's doctrine with ever increasing skepticism.
