I’ve been growing up with ppl even in my family telling me I can’t grow my hair longer cuz I’m black and I refuse to accept that because it doesn’t make sense
@@lossiefreeman43954 times a year is insane and not true. My mom washed my hair every 2 weeks to a month. But yeah, most black girls had long hair when we were kids
Caucasian hair dresser here. Bless you for this video. In school (depending on where you go) they absolutely do NOT teach us about hair beyond a 2C. And that scale is pretty limited as is. Shameful. I'm so grateful for this information. Thank you.
@@candancereed5891 I've been turned around once and will never put myself in that predicament again. Moved away for college and had noooo idea hair salons would tell you they don't do your type of hair. I would never forget that feeling, like the whole salon stopped breathing when I walked in. Black stylist would not turn white clients around
I never understood the obsession with cutting these invisible split ends every month in the natural hair community. probably why so many naturals hair is stuck at the same length
@cutei pie I’m sorry but there is no actual way to completely get rid of them. Same with spilt ends, they are just always gonna come back or happen. You can prevent them tho. Make sure to put oil or grease on your ends, it lubricates them so they’re easier to untangle. Try to keep hair in protective styles like twists, braids, cornrows and buns. I don’t recommend puffs, wash and gos or twist/braid outs often cuz it allows you’re hair to knot up and tangle with each other of its self. Keep hair stretched as well, whether you braid it, band it or even low heat blow drying, it keeps your strands elongated so their not shrunken and can easily tangle with each other. Even though she said what she said above, I still think you should trim your hair. If I see or encounter a single strand knot, I always cut it out and don’t rip it out bcuz that can cause the end of that strand to split. Edit: grammatical corrections
Also, let’s make it a habit to speak love into our hair and bodies in general. Don’t say it’s too hard, or make it seem like a chore to take care of it. Instead say, “I love every little beautiful strand of hair on my head. I’m grateful to be able to nurture and nourish my hair.” It works ❤️
When my hair was relaxed and I went to the hair stylist every month to get it redone or treatment I used to HATE them for trimming my hair. My hair was growing and yes i had split ends but trimming every month whatever I growth I had was gone. I honestly think some hair stylists low key don’t want your hair to be longer than theirs 🤣
The couldn't tell me nothing. I barely wash my hair, I don't treat it nor cut it and it grows.... I'm going back natural now, I'm not doing the big chop and my hair is growing fast.
Some hair stylist are like that for real. I went to one stylist for a protective style and she hurt my hair bad. I had to chop it all off and start over again.
Yes it is no need for them to trim your hair unless they find it too uneven. As far as split ends, you don't cut them, you restore them by using carrot oil.
So i got heat damage last july due to a remy installment for graduation , so being the lovely girl that i am , i decided to do my research since i oh so loved my hair from the time i was a child till now when im a teenager , so i heard from a friend to cut a little bit of the heat damage at a time And so i did Some of the front section on the left side of my head is where the heat damage is So now i walking around with short patched hair on the left side of my head and long hair to the back Biggest mistake ever After my country is corona free , i need to go to the hair salon I dont even know if it will grow back fast enough 😢😢😢
My hair will get really nappy if I just add water like it will basically die and dry if I put water in it and let it sit without doing anything 😂🤣🤣😭🤣😭😭🤣🤣
I needed this cause it’s like my hair is staying at shoulder length cause I feel like the just cut my whole new growth off but I’m getting into protective styles now
lolitaspeach girl yes! My hair grew long as hell before I cut off four inches last year and realized it was the damn iron I was taking that boosted my growth
lolitaspeach you’ll see the growth after a few months. I have iron-deficiency anemia but I get constipated from iron pills (TMI sorry) so I take the liquid supplement
This video is revolutionary. Sis said do you know what split ends looks like on black people hair. Lordt I do not. Majority of these hair schools are built my Caucasian specialists. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
"Relaxed hair is not healthy hair, PERIOD!" Yessssss!!!!!! I see videos talking avoyr how to get healthy relaxed hair, I'm like.....how sway???? How???? Those two words cancel out each other
@@NBnNC if your scalp isn't damaged, there is no reason it shouldn't grow. Breakage is the reason why it seems to not grow. As for the healthy thing.....its like saying you can have healthy heat damage. Your curl pattern is literally broken, so all that length is still damaged. If she doesn't care, that's fine. She gotta do what she wants. It's her hair
The same way you can have healthy coloured hair. It's about controlled damage. You have to balance enough chemical processing to remove the curl pattern/colour while keeping hair strength, volume and shine.
@@RedFlyingFox007 Damaged hair is hair that has been broken/altered from it's original curl pattern. You can have color without color damage. Ive seen people keep their curl pattern with color. You can't have permed hair without damaged hair. The hair is literally broken that's how it becomes permed. You have to destroy it. It can still be long though if you have hair thick/strong enough to withstand the damage.
Idk, I guess it depends on locality but I know more and more women transitioning from natural to texlax hair 🤷🏾♀️. At least they gave it a shot - I know I did for seven long tedious years🤦🏾♀️
NB in DC I can definitely understand anyone’s frustration will be natural for 6 years on 4/14/20 and my hair is only (maybe was because I been in a protective style for 4 weeks) apl stretched. Me and my hair are just beginning to talk to each other.
Finally a woman with actual 4C hair giving hair advice. I see videos all the time aimed at helping girls with 4C type 4 hair and their hair doesn’t look type 4 at all 🤔🤔. I appreciated your video so much! It was so informative. Will be using you as a guide for my natural hair journey from now on 🤗
Agree that relaxers are damaging. Relaxed my hair for years and all I did was fight thin and balding hair. Finally cut it all off and went natural and my hair started growing like wild. I’m about four months in and what a difference!! No more thin hair. No balding. I discovered I have 4c hair but I’m not complaining. It’s finally thick healthy and growing. I’m just focused on growing longer hair so this video is great. Only wish I had the sense to do it a long time ago! Thanks for sharing. The water tip is very helpful.
But on a real note. Out of all the RU-vid videos I watched on this subject, y’all are finally getting through to me that I have to moisturize my hair. Cause I can’t even lie, I protective style & don’t touch my sis until 2 months later 💀 then wonder why she broken af.
After reading the comments, I feel like it is important to note that while you shouldn't be scissor happy you still shouldn't avoid trims like it is the plague. At a certain point we have to worry about the health of our hair as opposed to length. Your hair may be long, but if the ends of your hair are see-through, thin, jagged, and are making all sorts of W~y-shapes, what's the point? And it isn't that hard to spot single strand knots or split ends either. Just give the hair a blowout and feel the ends of your hair. If they are rough and see through snip, snip. Also, if you have 4c hair, you shouldn't be trimming your hair in it's natural shruken state anyway. If you do that you'll never get an even cut(just speaking from experience). The longer you wait to trim your hair, the more hair you will inevitably need to cut off in the long run.
What u end up having to cut really ends up being equivalent. It’s no point in blowing it out all the time to check for that. It’s counterproductive since you’re damaging your hair by blowing it out and could just trim when you’re comfortable with the length.
I agree with you, I have healthy well growing natural hair and it did not grow as beautifully, until I started trimming my ends...If it's making you look like a kitty cat on the surface and you can see the sun through it despite it being really thick - it's not hair sis - it's ends!
@@Dree03 What u end up cutting off is not the equivalent. How split ends work is that they travel up the hair shaft. One strand of hair can have 1-6 splits up to the root. I have seen naturals with really long hair, but ends that were so see-through they have to cut off half their length. They had to do a whole big chop.
I am relaxed currently and it’s my second time around being relaxed and transitioning to natural. In my experience my hair has grown to mid back length while relaxed, HOWEVER after 5 years of relaxing, my hair is starting to thin and grow slowly. Even though I relax 2x yearly and I under process, I find that my hair grows best without heat, colouring or relaxing. Can’t wait to be natural again, I want to feel free!
I shaved my head last night, 3 months after I relaxed my hair. My hair changed dramatically after the chemicals got to it. I had to start over. I'm so happy to see my curls again. #LilFroGang
Your not lying. I think my hairs not growing because I suffer from anemia (low in iron) and I stopped taking my supplements for more than 3 years, my hairs really struggling to grow long.
My iron use to be low but by consciously eating the right foods in a greater quantity my hair is thriving very well. Spinach, kale , beans, lentils are great for your hair. Check the packaging of the foods that you eat make sure that the iron level is 5% and above. xoxo
“But I saw this youtuber with a relaxer and her hair was long...but clearly YOU DONT” 😂 I’m definitely subscribing not only cause of that but I needed to be scolded for the way I treat my hair 😭 thank you
Split ends are not white. The white bulb means it came directly from the scalp. A split end is the ends split literally. Curlier hair hides it better but you can tell by the way the ends feel and misbehave. You can also tell by looking at the ends of your hair😉
You are right sis , they hid so well yesterday I found them oh gosh I had to trim those ends like the hair was splitting like literally splitting I had a fright oh my life I've never experienced it that way . As a newly natural woman I almost fainted !
@@SunnySideUp712 Right I was completely lost when she said that because I was like let me find out I got a super power that I'm the only one that can see split ends 😂 Even when she said the other hair styles you can see the white bulb, that's when I knew she was really confused because that's a shed hair and we all have white bulbs. That's how you can tell it came from the root and didn't just break off randomly on a strand💯
When she said "get to know your hair" I felt that lol when everybody went crazy over coconut oil, my hair was like "🤣🤣🤣🤣" shae butter helps me. My hair does not likey the oil of the coconut
I literally just commented this on another video 🤣😭😭 I literally went out and bought coconut oil years ago bc everyone said it was good for our hair and it just made my hair dry. I love shea butter so much more
Coconut oil is high in protein. Some people’s hair doesn’t respond well to too much protein. Try jojoba oil. It’s much closer to the sebum our scalps naturally produce. A bit expensive tho (if you get the pure form).
I went natural almost three years ago and I’ve been at around shoulder length for the LONGEST and it’s frustrating me 😭 thanks for the tips. I’m only a teenager and I’m very lazy but I care so much about my hair that I’m going to try to step up my hair care routine
Girl I hope you the best I’ve subbed recently and I have not regretted it! Best 4c representative our age especially with your length!!! Give me five years and I’ll have long hair too girl 😭❤️💙💚💜🧡
When my hair is in braids I add water, ors hair lotion and blue magic to the part where my hair is. It keeps my hair moisturised under my braids. I recommend it
This happened to my hair so badly two weeks ago because I was adding product that keeps it curly but not twisting it, moisturizing it or sitting it under a bonnet. So I bought a bonnet this week, castor oil, and twisted it up wet with Cantu Natural Hair Conditioning creamy hair lotion, Sky Organic Organic Castor oil and shea moisture leave in detangler this week past. Not a knot in sight. Hair is still moisturized. I touch it up with the castor oil around the scalp, ends and edges every couple of days. I need a spray bottle for water though.
Ever since I took your advice about moisturizing my hair every 3 days I see a huge difference!! My hair sheds a whole lot less!!! I moisturize every 3 days
Omg I always pick my hair and my dad complains about all the hair on the floor I didnt realise how much damage I was doing thank you so much, my poor hair, and a barely moisturize OMG I'm a criminal
Thank you so much for the point about relaxers. My parents used to relax my hair as a child and my scalp would always have damage from relaxers, my hair would start breaking off after a few months. I used to think there was something wrong with me. Two years ago I went natural and let me tell you my natural hair is so thick and curly. Thank you sis
Currently on my transition to get back to natural! So I am taking notes down.... literally got like maybe 1.5 inches of relaxed hair left but now I am comfortable in growing and caring for my hair! Thanks for this info 🙏🏾
I like Eugenia, she's so beautiful and SMART and she's helping me to put lots of love and effort into growing and taking care of my hair, her Mom should be proud of her! Cause I am, THANK YOU for the info, and May God bless you and your entire family!!!
I took a strand of hair from my head and the end was spit pretty bad, I pulled another one and the same thing. I'm a professional license hairstylist. I become really ill so I couldn't do my hair for one whole year. I had to go to a salon to someone I trusted and had her to trim my hair ends, then research and saw your Moringa and Fenugreek deep conditioner and I haven't had any split ends since. But I had my ends trimmed first. I used your products only like 3 months now. 8oz is pretty small this is my third purchase. I use it once a week. I love this. My hair has grew .
Danielle Palmer you haven’t tried hard enough then. Hair always grows unless you have an underlying medical condition. You’re just not retaining length. Your ends are the oldest part of your hair, If u don’t moisturize it properly or anything else, then your hair will stay the same length. Don’t give up so easily on your hair. Learn your hair
JS Willworth nah hair should grow past your ears unless you have a medical condition, deficiency or poor hair care routine. That’s not genetics. Hair stops growing when you die.
Soooo many of these tips make so much since but I’ve just never thought about. Especially the water one. I used to wet my hair every other day my senior year of high school and it THRIVED.
My mom's grans was Khoisan and she took the thin hair gene from the khoi gran. They don't really grow long hair. I took that gene too. I have been eating right, cutting split ends, I know my hair porosity and everything but it just doesn't grow past shoulder length. Anyway this is to say yes genetics can play a huge part. Accept your hair as is and just make sure it's healthy. Ever since accepting I'm happy and I'm even considering sisterlocks.
I've had dreads for 7 YEARS (got them when I was 5) and got them out at the end of last year this has help me alot since I don't know a thing about hair and I got 4C😳😬 so thank you!!
@@r.amllahh7x423 yeah, when you have dreads you usually don't just have them in your hair for a couple months, they're supposed to stay in for at least over a year I think. I might do that soon cause my hair loves low maintenance
@@blahface240 Dreads are the number 1 way to grow 4c honestly. By design it’s low manipulation and it’s very easy to moisturise and not have to worry about shrinkage. Only thing is you cant do other styles
omg you're so cute 😭 & not just the way you look I mean obviously you're gorgeous but it's also your lil accent , the way you speak , the things you laugh at , your overall personality 🥺🥺🥺
Exactly. I have various hair type on my head and I can tell that the hair which suffer the most when I was not cutting the splits ends and knots was the 4c. I was struggling with my 4c because of that and I wasn't understanding why. Then, when I start applicated the dust method I start to see length retention and my hair was healthy. The key is to cut when you see the spilt end/knot and only the hair which need a cut. I do that on each wash day ( monthly ).
I'm 42 yrs old and I've learned more from this vid than I have from any other source. EVER. Great job on the vid and thanks for taking the time out to education the masses! You are a very beautiful and intelligent young lady, thanks for teaching this old dog some new tricks lol
I’m bitter “I almost never eat healthy” **has a flat stomach and amazing body** 😒😒😒😒😂😂 It is crazy how many subscribers you’re getting so quickly lol good job, keep it up! 🤗
My hair grew extremely fast and got super thick simply by doing wash n gos. But Id do a cowash wash n go every 3 days. Doing that kept my ends from drying and splitting. Kept my hair extra moisturized and that means a lot for me because I live in the Arizona desert. Because it stayed so moisturized it was never tangled or knotted up because I never gave ny hair a chance to settle. I would shampoo every 2 weeks and cowash in between. Protective styling is NOT the only way to grow hair and retain it.
My aunt is nigerian and used to have really long hair but she also told me that when coming to Europe the water actually caused her hair to fall out. I actually don't think that's the only reason because she used relaxer. My other nigerian aunt has extremely long Grey hair and still lives in Nigeria.
My sister has your beautiful texture .. I told her listen to people with your hair texture .. that's how you quickly find what works for you .. thank you for making this
My teenage nephew has been trying to grow his hair for a year. It's ridiculously THICK, but refuses to grow much in length at all, and he never cuts it. When I was his age about 20 years ago, I did the same thing. My hair was down to my shoulders in the same amount of time, and I used to cut, relax, dye it non-stop.
So do just that? I only leave my cornrows for a month then take it out to wash it out but i don't know if I'm doing that right and yes i moisturize them

Hey Love, Thank you for your well thoughout content. Would it be too much to ask for you to do a miniseries on helpful protective styles where you measure the length before and after? Also, share your insight on why you think the style produced so much length retention. That would be so helpful☺️ I haven’t seen anyone document the amount of growth from a particular style.
Omg girl. I love you! Keep it real. I never understood the whole cutting thing either and I dont let anyone cut my hair except 1 person I've known for years and she knows how much I cherish my length and shes managed to keep it healthy and long even when I did get relaxers. You make great points and your hair is long and beautiful! Subscribed!
Your hair probably falls out when you try to detangle it in the shower because you’re not cutting/trimming your hair. Everything you said is very accurate except the trimming and detangling part. When your hair is even it causes less breakage. Beautiful hair btw
I’m going with everything you say girl, your are so Knowledgeable & I love your hair 😍how long did it take you to grow it that length & where did you learn all this ?beautiful 💕
I would have to respectfully disagree with you on that. I used to cut my ends very often and would still struggle with tangles in the shower. Also, she didn't say to never cut your ends, but to stop cutting them so often. If you're cutting your hair every month and your hair grows 0.5- 1 inch a month, how are you going to achieve any length? You're basically cutting off all the growth that you've gained during that month.
Girl, you are so right. Hair dressers always say you need a "trim" so that they can make money off you, (and also when they are jealous of your hair length). Its a scam and so long as you are properly keeping you hair stretched, conditioned and protected you will be fine.
One year ago I did all kinda stuff with my hair and didn’t let it rest at all . Now I wear wigs /lace fronts and sometimes braids and my hair is growing more
