I really appreciate how well thought out DR’s interface is. Coming from Premiere it was frustrating at first because it lacked customization, but once you’re forced to learn where everything is, you get used to it and become more efficient. Premiere’s interface got so cluttered I used to find myself constantly opening, closing, and moving panels around. It just got in the way of my work along with its horrible performance. DR has breathed new life into me as an editor. I firmly believe it’s the future of video production and I’m absolutely loving it.
Dude, you are like a DRobot! What I have yet to find that I relied upon heavily in Premiere was N where you could stretch to fill gaps. I really miss that. I will never go back. Been on DR since April 2020. Will sub and follow along.
Hi WWPTV. Can you get me a ride in one of those trucks ? Just looked at your jawdropping channel! I can't think of a slicker way unfortunately....I understand and can do same result but in more steps. Lets see if any of the 2.5K subs I have can help..? So pleased to hear you subscribed! Enjoy..Darren.
@@DarrenMostyn Time is my battle. It certainly isn't the subject matter. And I don't think I make enough to hire someone on Fiverr to do it with the same level passion, simply knowledge of keyboard shortcuts in their memory would be their strength. I remember my first 2.5K subs. It came after about 2 years. And has grown at 400% just about every year thereafter
@@WWPTV If I come up with a quicker solution willl let you know. So my 2.5K subs in 10 weeks is looking promising! Im still very new to YT but learning very quickly believe me! - you have a lot of subs - thanks for insight and happy to hear any tips you have!! Have a good weekend, Darren.
Now here is a another KILLER TIP from me. Have you ever wanted to solo a video track just like a audio track. Yes it's possible, you just have to hold ALT + CLICK ON TRACK TOGGLE (the option which enables and disables track) BUTTON. Great video Darren and that combining bins is dope👍
Wow, what great tips!!! I've been casually paying with Resolve for a few years and I've watched a ton of RU-vid videos, and when I came across this video, I only knew of 1 of the 10 tips! So this was truly super useful and helpful. Thank you so much!
Just subscribed! We are a full end to end audio production facility and have recently expanded to include video production. We decided to go with Davinci Resolve 18 and I've been hunting around for some clear and concise tutorials in RU-vid land...many are just filled with "fluff" and shameless plugs for their courses without a lot of real world practical knowledge. I found your channel along the way and I must say it's quite refreshing! You pretty much won me over by the color management video alone 🙂 Thanks! Looking forward to watching through the entire playlist...
Selection follows playhead - this is my favourite tip today. Drives me nuts changing the wrong thing. The other tips are providing solutions to problems I didn’t even realise I had - thanks again.
It was a recommendation from RU-vid after I watched other content creators talking about DR16 frame rates and cut page usage. Do you know of the discord group where the likes of GOW and CB Super, Mr Alex tech etc hang out
It's pretty amazing how fast your channel's grown in the past year. You said at the end of this video that you had 2.5k subs and that was less than a year ago. Look at your subs now 😆 I'm not saying this just to say how many subs you've got, I'm trying to say you've made such amazing videos for those who are keen to learn DR all around the globe. I've switched from PP just a couple weeks ago and your channel was the second I subscribed. I am very picky on subscribing as I really want to see what exactly I want to see and you are the right guy. Huge thanks to you Darren and please keep making awesome tutorials/tipsandtricks/whatsoever 😂 Cheers!
Thank you so much for subscribing. Yes, its been quite a journey. I started end of June last year so just coming up for 12 months. Im really enjoying making them too. you might like to subscribe to my email too where I give away free things every now and again. bit.ly/2RrjvpN
@@DarrenMostyn That'd be so cool, I just did. Having more than 20k subs in a year is way more outstanding than the average and that happened to you because you've been making more outstanding contents than the average :)
Thank you Darren , so helpful. When I think about how much time you save me with your tips. Feels like you are untying my hands. Fantastic, please keep them coming. 1. class content!!!
Excellent tips, well presented, clear and to the point! A few I knew and a lot I didn't. I assume they are all in the resolve manual but it's so much better having them explained like this in a video.
The manual doesn't explain how and why you use the tools - I hope Im giving extra info, however that has to be one of the best manuals out there. Worth a read. Thanks D.
Hi Darren. Thank you very much for providing these tutrials. I am still a rookie colorist. I have the Blackmagic Design Mini Panel and would like to know if you would recommend the Editor Keyboard from Blackmagic. Thank you for the great tutorials!
I didn't read all 250 comments, so I'm sorry if someone else already mentioned this. At tip #8 you forgot to tell one important thing. If you use cmd (ctrl on windows) + t, and you have the cut on the audio track at the same point as on the video track, it will add default transitions for both video and audio tracks. In your case, the audio track doesn't have the cut, so Resolve adds just video transition. But if you had the cut on the audio track at the same point where you have the cut at the video track, Resolve would add (default) transitions on both video and audio tracks. If you want to add just the video transition, and leave the cut on audio track without (or with existing) transition, then you'll have to use option (alt on windows) + t Also, if you want to add transition on audio track only and leave the video track without (or with existing) transition, you'll have to use shift + t Thanks for all of these great tips!
@@BostjanCadej Thanks. yes, but its not right yet... yes....getting there ... give me another 5 videos time and I'll have it right! Learning on every episode!!
Thanks for these tips! A slightly different question: Is there a way I can customise my Track Colours permanently so I don't always have to colour-code them each time I'm working on a new timeline?
Thank you! Now we got a problem, i found you earlier tonight and i have now binged it all. And now incant sleep because i want to redo work because i now see how to do it better 🤣😍 Thank you! An episode on color management. And an episode on getting the bwst out of Braw (i assume i have to treat it differently than the sony slog3)
Tip #1 🙏.... Gawd I'm gonna have to buy you another coffee ! Just watched the rest...shift _slip and slide on the beat.. y e s !:) Genuinely freakin' useful tips...not just filler. Much appreciated. Ps. D for Disable clip... how have I lived without this?😑😂
Hi Darren top man really enjoying your tutorials I'm pretty new to da Vinci and you're making it so so much easier you keep mentioning about object removal is there any chance you could do a video on object removal that would be awesome many thanks and once again thanks for your videos they're great
Great stuff! But what do you think about the Line on the timeline that is splitting the audio and video? Do you know if it’s possible to remove it? I’m relatively new to Resolve and the fact that i have to move that Line up and down when i’m zooming in and out on the timeline litterally gives me the shits!! Im honestly thinking about not using Resolve because it is so frustating that you have to move stuff around so much, when you just want to do little tweaks to stuff.... hope you have an answer:)
Could you do a video on CONFORMING?! I usually do most of the Post work on my films and videos but understanding Conforming and seeing if it's for me may come in handy once I start working with other people in Post......... Love the channel man!
Hello Kenny - Thanks for the sub! Appreciated. The channel is growing quickly - not even 3 months old yet! Thank you for your comments. All the best, Darren.
Our F45 have boxed out zones to keep social distancing and we don't share equipment now- it works well....I not that good at training at home TBH! have a good day! Darren.
Thank you for good tips. I had to learn the last one the hard way, coming from an editor where I can choose at the moment whether I want to pause the playback (Enter) or stop it (Space) with playback returning to the start position. The toggle makes it a bit more easier, but you have to know what state it is in, it's not indicated anywhere. I'm still struggling why there are many things like this in DaVinci Resolve where there is a "neat trick" to a problem that could have not existed at all. Too bad my old editor has its own problems (but not so much in simplicity department really) too and I want/need to migrate. Luckily, at least we have tons of DaVinci Resolve videos nowadays. Good work.
Slip + shift! Amazing! I'm considering DaVinci for editing (after 15+ years on premiere) BTW it will be very interesting to see a video about your studio / set / genelec speakers / reference monitor + TV... Your thought and recommendations about Hardware and gear.
Hi Ariel. I am going to be doing an in-depth detailed studio tour as part of my first "live" which will be on 30 December 7PM GMT (London). I promised it when I reached 10K subs - so I'm delivering what I promised. Hope you will join us. I will go through all the hardware. Glad to hear you are enjoying Resolve from Premiere.
Cool tips Darren. But double clicking a timeline clip does no match frame. It opens the timeline clip for trimming in source monitor. Alt-double click does matchframe.
I did not know that ripple timeline markers was a thing. I'm trying to edit my videos to a beat and my markers keep moving and now I know why! Thanks sooo much!
Hi Darren your Tips & Tricks are very usefull and well explained my comliments for your good work can I ask you how can I see the lenght of a clip in the timeline when its selected? Thanks Nicholas
Hi Nicholas - to see the length of the shot...look at your record viewer. In the top right is the timeline timecode and the top left will display duration of in and out points. Press X on any clip to have it mark in/out automatically. Hope that helps. All the best, Darren.
Lot's of very good information Darren, thank you, I have Subscribed to your channel. Having worked in Premiere for the past 14 years+ I have become quite familiar with all it's controls. I have now fully switched to Resolve and just purchased the Studio version a week or two ago (did use the free version since 14 although never spent much time on it). My question is, on Premiere I used to insert a clip into the middle of a timeline by holding down the Ctrl key and it would just move all the other clips along to accommodate the new clip. I haven't found a way of doing this in Resolve , any tip would be much appreciated.
@@DarrenMostyn Too simple Darren, but it works perfectly thank you, I was trying Ctrl and all sorts of things - been in lockdown for too long, my brain has died.
@@DarrenMostyn Hi Darren, yes, the F9 key works just fine, no problem at all. But what I haven't figured out as yet is, how do you grab a clip that is on the timeline and move it to another location without it overwriting what is on the timeline, i.e. insert it between two clips and the timeline moves to open the gap. I could do this with holding the Ctrl key down in Premiere, but still haven't found a way to do it in Resolve. - promise this will be the last question :-)
Before I get to watching the video, would you advise grading before edit or edit before grading? I've done both and I'm not sure which I like. My bias is to edit after grading because the colours are there but I recently graded after the edit and I didn't have super long clips to sort and cut, jist the final edit.
Very good, I got some of it but as a novice perhaps a little to advanced for me. Would you consider doing an A-Z colour episode for newcomers to editing, that's where I am struggling at the moment ?
Hi Dave. It seems a lot of people want exactly that! I'll do it - I promise!! Wont be for a few weeks as next few are planned, but stick with me! Thanks for commenting. Have a good weekend, Darren.
Yes, that is a popular one! Glad it helps you. Its taken me a while to realise that people want basic more than advanced. Its hard to please all levels of course but I certainly need to help beginners more so I will.
I've recorded today a complete beginners guide to color page for editors due to your request (and a few other subscribers)! Out very soon - just need to polish it! make sure to press notification bell and subscribe so you don't miss it! All the best, Darren
More good tips. Seems that there are a lot of things to remember for a guy like me, as I do editing, but not everyday or even every week. My head only has a certain amount of space for data - so like an old harddrive - I have to forget something to make place for new stuff. So, I hope you are saving all your notes, so you can put out a book. You will have 10 times the subscribers soon - so get ready for that. Have a great day Darren -talk to ya later.
Hi Jim. A lot of these tips are from my years of notes, from version 7 to now - I developed an app 4 years ago and so I can easily access which tips were popular (has become a valuable resource for this RU-vid channel) - and from my live training - you get a feel for what people find useful or not. Often it's the least likely tips that everyone needs! All the best.
also remember from a colourist point of view (or assistant), the edit list for offline clips is really useful for conform.. We always dealing with XML's and AAF's - this mode "offline" can help solve conform issues.
I have version 17.1 under windows 10 and unfortunately the BIN windows do not have an "always on top" option so as soon as I press one the other loses priority and ends up hidden from the main window. Is there a remedy? Thanks
