My grandmother had 10 children in the 40s & 50s, at home 8 of them (the 2 last ones in the hospital). My great-grandmother helped her through as she was a midwife, but the 2 last ones she wasn't around for anymore. No pain management back then. Just the way it was. Women are so blessed now for having so many options these days. That's what I think, at least.

Thank you for highlighting the difference between baby blues and post partum diagnoses. Baby blues being very normative, but being able to notice when you need more help is very important, and not to be dismissed! Love your videos Jen :)

Thank you, girls! It is really helpful. I had an appointment about lactation with a midwife because I was so stressed about breastfeeding when baby comes (still am, but a lot less, lol), and she talked a lot about the hunger, the thirst and baby blue, too. When you breastfeed, you produce two hormones, ocytocin and protaglandin, that help with your supply and transform your blood into milk for the baby, and also produce all the elements your little one needs, and that's a lot of work for your body, so you need to stay really hydrated and eat things that help out (omega 3 are recommended for breastfeeding mommas!). So that's why you are always thirsty and hungry, hehe. As for the baby blues, she explained that a crushing majority of new moms go through it beginning at day 3, because of the crash in hormone levels. It's completely normal and will disappeay when your hormone find their balance, which can take some time. That's also why you lose your hair like crazy... Also, 85% of babies come before or after the due date! Read that in my weekly update for my own (I hope he comes early, I can't do it anymore!). anyway, thank you Jen and Molly for this very helpful video! I already had a lot of info thanks to my unending questioning of my doctor and midwife (lol, poor them), but I still found a lot of things I didn't know about in the video, and it also helps to assuage some fears I have for when baby comes! Love you and a very happy mother's day!

LOL Molly. Your story about your friend being like "no, I'm having this baby" and knowing herself. My mom told me the story (slight overshare so if people aren't into that, don't read this: ) that when she was in the hospital for me she had to make a bowel movement and the nurses kept telling her "no you don't, it's just contractions" and my mom was like "no, I NEED to poop" and she finally convinced them to let her go to the bathroom. She popped out the tiniest little turd and was like "told you so." lolol. Your story of your friend made me think of that story from my mom. :)

All of the points mentioned are so true! I have a 5 and half month old baby who wakes up every one to two hours. Hubby and I are exhausted. What did you do to get your baby to sleep? We are truly desperate. P.S. we tried the Cry It Out method and he will cry for almost two hours.

How about those phantom baby kicks!! 😂 I swear after having both of my kids, I sometimes get phantom baby kicks that get me all nervous like: "wait. But I'm not pregnant.... am I?"

My little man was born in the night of December 7th 2016, in the morning when they took me to the maternity ward I started feeling such pain with one tooth. I still feel it so much to the point where I can't eat normally anymore and now another tooth on the same side started hurting as well! Haha it's terrible. Labor usually takes longer for the first pregnancy. But subsequent labor usually goes a lot quicker since your body has gone through the process already. Of course EVERY pregnancy and labor is different just like every baby and person is. You'll see Jen.😉

I didn't even get to hold my son after I just delivered him! They checked him first and cleaned him completely and waited a little to ask me if I wanted to hold him. Like "HELL YES!" In my mind. First time having a baby and couldn't even get to hold him as if I wasn't just pushing for hours to finally see my baby after full term pregnancy! All I wanted was to hold my biggest blessing. 😤😓

My mom's teeth (a few of them) literally fell out while pregnant. At that time they didn't have prenatal vitamins yet (this is the early 70s in Belgium) and I "ran away" with all her calcium supply.

I'm wondering what it means to give the baby a "gentle pat" to help the baby sleep though the night. What is a "pat" in this case?

Not all mothers experience that bond you talk about at the end. My mother had it with her first 2, but when I was born she told me it took months for her to feel any bond to me.

I'm not pregnant or getting pregnant soon, but in the future I plan to have kids. Hearing about the hunger part worries me because I already have difficulty eating enough and gaining weight, and sometimes I just get tired of eating! I just imagine my future baby literally sucking the life force out of me! 😶

Great video but to me breastfeeding was actually the hardest part and I didn't expect that at all as I've always thought it will come naturally. I was crying all the time from the pain and constantly worrying whether I was doing it right. I only got the hang of it after 2 months because help was so limited (no trained lactation consultant in my hospital unfortunately, just general nurses), just wanted to share that. Thanks for the video.

How did you lose the weight so quickly?

Oh gosh, you absolutely can overeat while breastfeeding! I am breastfeeding my 18 month old and I still get urges to eat certain foods. It helps that I am vegan and anything I eat (including cake) won't put weight on me. I was a UK size 12 before pregnancy now I am a UK size 8. I still take pre natals, vitamin D and vitamin C because I live in Scotland. I aim to self wean my child, hopefully he will give up the boob around 2/3 years old.

My Mom ate nothing but potato chips when she had me. I wonder why : P

Sequins during the day?!

I really wish someone told me of the hunger with breastfeeding. To put in perspective: when pregnant a woman needs to eat on average 300 calories a day. When breastfeeding that same woman needs to eat 500-600 extra calories a day.

The only reason I found out I was pregnant was because I had and urge to drink buckets of water, and craved lemons!!

I could barely eat when breastfeeding. No cravings. No hunger.

A baby should really not be allowed to sleep through the night until they are at least 3-4 months old. If a 2 week old baby is sleeping through the night, that is definitely trouble and means that there is something not right. Babies younger than 1-2 months should absolutely be waking up to feed during the night!! (Pediatrician speaking here)
