You definitely dont want to eat when they say you can’t. The reason why is to save your life. Basically if anything goes wrong or just in general they have to operate if you have eaten recently there is a risk of trowing up and chocking on it. So don’t eat anything!! Be safe
What I learned the first time was that I didn’t really need anything except for deodorant, sweatpants, a T-shirt, toothbrush, and some underwear. I didn’t pack a bag, tbh. I went into labor and grabbed the bare minimum when I had to go. I knew if we absolutely needed something, my partner could fetch or or someone could bring it, but we never needed to invoke help. Hospitals are dirty, I didn’t care what I looked like while I was there, I just needed to get through it. Next time, I might pack in advance, but I will pretty much do the same thing. The only thing I will do different is pack the baby’s outfit; My partner grabbed one sized for a 3 month old without thinking, so she swam in it.
Love your channel; I’ve been a fan for years! But just wanted to give you some background info about being NPO or not being able to eat during labor. I’m a nurse in surgery and the reason why they keep your tummy empty is that in the event of an emergent c-section there’s a possibility where things can go wrong and they need to put a breathing tube in your throat. If you have food that comes back up, it could potentially cause you to aspirate it or for the food to go into your lungs and that’s a big no no. You could end up needing CPR, be breathing on a tube for an unknown amount of time, or even worse death. So, though you’re hungry...it’s not worth risking your life over. Just trying to educate those who don’t know and why it’s stressed so much in the hospital. It’s for your safety!

My hospital actually charges (20€ kit) if they need to give you pads... You have to take bath towels and everything on their list.... I think the best thing is to check with your maternity / hospital what they recommend you take.... Just so you don't find yourself lacking anything At such a se time moment. I live in Paris France.
This time I'll be packing a dress for going home. I ended up with a c-section last time and none of my leggings were comfortable over the incision. I ended up going home in my bath robe and slippers!
I packed so much because I didn't really know what I'd need, and I barely touched any of it until we went home. The two things I couldn't do without though were Tums (technically contraband -- I was supposed to be asking the nurse for these every time I needed them, but they took so loooong), and chapstick. The hospital air was so freaking dry.
Thanks your video I packed aspirin for my hospital bag and it came in so handy for my husband when he was with me throughout my labor and forgot to drink water and developed a headache.

My hospital let me drink water after I got the epidural, so that must vary from place to place. I did sneak a protein bar when the nurses all left the room, though, and that was amazing. (I've heard that the odds of actually throwing up and aspirating under anesthesia are something like 1%, which is a risk I was willing to take.)
ICU nurse here. Please don’t eat when a hospital tells h not to eat. When they make you “nothing by mouth” it isn’t because of the medications (sometimes it could be) but it’s usually because they are preparing for the worst, and u could be rushed into surgery. If u eat, and they intubated you, aspiration can occur and you could die. A cookie is never worth your life.
