Great point. We always think of things in the form of how it relates to us as humans. We need to think outside the box. Who’s to say aliens are on the same technological path as us? Maybe they skipped something like oil and went straight to antigravity. Maybe they have elements from their host star that is able to create stable heavier elements.

That way we would find out (already know) all these answers, and not bound to the time dimension could experience everything at once, after we die. But as we don't remember anything before birth I doubt it'll be very useful because we'll never know until then. It's all very depressing lol.

I doubt it. Anything that's been around for more than a few million years, which is extremely likely if any advanced species ever existed, would have signatures on a galactic scale. They'd also likely have sent self replicating probes across the galaxy, at least. The only plausible way an advanced alien race might exist in our galaxy is if it's relatively young. Which would be a huge coincidence.

@tauceti8341
@tauceti8341 4 года назад
@@sparramore That's one of the problems with science. There's only science where the money is aka grants. And if any citizen scientist does find something or try to publish something "iT wAsNt iN tHe jOurNalS!!!!" This is why we see these dark matter/energy people so insistent on the theory when its slowly starting to fade when held to scrutiny from new data sets and experiments. No money in discovering other theories because all this money has already been spent on this theory, therefore it MUST BE RIGHT!!!!! Look at the parker solar probe, an easy instrument could have been attached to do some science regarding the Electric Universe Theory. Did they? Nope. Same reason NASA's never figured out how to put a microscope on a rover, yet the Russians did in like the 80s. Now where going to have to wait another what 20-50 years before another probe goes to the sun again. It's a hard place to get too. For example, I can't do a gardening experiment in my own yard, write about it the academic standard, with proper protocols, because I have no degree. Therefore no ones going to vouch for some CITIZEN SCIENTIST to get published in the journal. Then you have all these phosphate junkies saying SEE THERES NO SCIENTIFICAL EVIDENCE TO BACK UP THAT METHOD (Hugelkulture). The money is in the phosphates, which is surprise, surprise is one of the biggest polluters.

Sure. "Real" or "simulation," we life and then we die, and so, presumably does the universe as we know it. Whether it's natural or artificial, the outcome for us would be the same, barring some interference from our simulating overlords. Would be tragic if we were obliterated so they could try running some other simulation instead. It would be interesting if we were in a simulation meant to test whether and how long it takes for us to work out that we're in one.

I still think one of the scariest scenarios is the one we've got (so far): no technosignatures. That is compatible with the possibility that animals spawned from Darwinian competition for mates and territory cannot adapt to the power of advanced technology (nukes, nanotech, AI, etc.); that technological civilizations are akin to toddlers left to play in a room full of loaded pistols and hand grenades, with the weapons increasing in power/danger level far faster than the toddlers mature. Any technosignature of a civilization that "made it" into space is at least an indication that we can "make it" as well.

We might just be alone. Maybe life at all is just not very likely
@CyVinci
@CyVinci Год назад
Imo it seems this is most likely. It’s probably a large conglomeration of filters that when put together make the chance of a advanced alien civilization arising akin to flipping a coin 50 times and each one landing on heads (credit to Isaac Arthur for that parallel) We think of ourselves as pretty advanced, yet we are a long way from being truly space-fairing and meaningfully detectable by other civilizations. Reasonable to say that the large technological gap we have to fill may lead us to even more dangerous and easily proliferated technology than nuclear weapons. Right now state and non-state actors can’t make nukes without being detected; even if they have the full picture the infrastructure is impossible to conceal. If in the future these things could be concealable and easy to create then non-proliferation becomes impossible and opens a significant threat to society from non-state extremists. From the lens of bio-engineering deadly viruses or even crop/livestock diseases this will probably be a reality in the near future.

The Berserkers of Saberhagen were actually weapons built to destroy the enemies of some long dead alien world. The mistake of its creators, was that the machines were programed to "Destroy enemy life", but the enemy life was never defined, so the machines destroyed any life it came across, including its creators. I must admit that the possibility of DNA encoded messages is really interesting, BUT how would one keep the message from being subjected to mutation? Let alone for millions or billions of years! It would need to be a vital sequence (a sequence that when changed in any way, leads to the lifeform not being able to survive) in order to be kept from mutating by evolution alone, a situation that would most likely keep us from ever discovering that it even is a message in the first place. Or it would need some other mechanism that protects it from being influenced by radiation, chemicals, viruses, replication errors and chance. Such a mechanism would have most likely been found by now, since it would be a unique situation in all of the genome. But genetics is not a trivial topic by any means and since it is not Your primary field of expertise, I'll just let this one slide :) Still a great vid, but I simply had to object here :)
@ReivecS
@ReivecS 4 года назад
There is a way to create error correcting genes and even program them to iterate a set number of times and then stop. These concepts are being tested in mosquito as a way to sterilize a population (mostly) but then stop working after x number of generations just in case it has unintended effects we can "undo" it. I think there was a radiolab podcast on this awhile back involving crazy uses of CRISPR but I may be confusing it with something else. But I would agree with your point that if such a thing existed in all life on Earth, we probably would have spotted that by now.
@theslay66
@theslay66 4 года назад
Or it could be a specific sequence that is repeated at regular intervals in all the genetic material. Sure, most of these sequences may have been modified through generations, but by studying the repeating patterns it would be possible to determine what was the original content of these sequences.
@vibovitold
@vibovitold 4 года назад
Like backups in IT, there are mechanisms that allow for corrections. Checksums, multiple copies etc. Nature uses some of such mechanisms - the most obvious ones being symmetry. All life we know is symmetrical. It can be lateral symmetry, or radial (octopuses etc.), but it's there, because natural selection is set up so that it favors it - noone wants to mate with asymmetrical specimen, since it's a red flag warning about mutation and DNA damage. I believe this is how humans will bio-engineer themselves within 500 or 1000 years. The reason why we're getting older and finally die is mostly because copying errors accumulate over time. But if you had 5 copies of your genotype, and everytime something is off, your body would compare the copies, it could identify the "common denominator"; this gene is different in copy B, but the same in copies A, C, D and E , so it's obvious which one must be correct, and we can safely ditch version B because it's corrupt. No cancer, no aging, back to Eden. Evolution is cheap, and its ultimate goal is survival of the species, not individuals, so it didn't waste resources on creating such an error proof mechanism. It would be an overkill. But deliberate bioengineering very well could.

There are probably ways to pull it off, plus these seem to assume tech beyond our capability. I'm sure we could even be capable of something like it one day.

I'm not a specialist in this area, but I have heard that DNA sequences change over time unless they encode for something so vital that all cells with mutations in that subsequence are unviable. These are called conserved regions. So, the problem would be how to encode a cosmic "hello" in DNA but make that sequence be conserved.
