Playing through a bonus level almost always feels like a reward but sometimes it seems that “bonus” is used as code for “weird”. However, that doesn't necessarily negate the experience. Instead, it just makes the level in question feel like something of a fever dream, embedding them deep within our memories as particularly bizarre. But which are the worst (or best) culprits? "The command and conquer series is known for many things, but sci-fi weirdness isn't really one of them" The only person who would say that about a game with time travel, Tesla coils, invisibility, nuclear bombs, is someone who has never played them

It Came from Red Alert is definitely a reference to It Came From the Desert, a 1989 game from Cinemaware for multiple systems (some with completely different stories) that features fighting against giant ants in a top down view! Retsupurae has a wonderfully hilarious commentary over a long play if you ever want to see it!

I played it on the Amiga500 as a kid, way ahead of it's time. It was an unbelievable experience to play that game but as kids we didn't have a clue about what to do.

Ahh yes, Red Alerts grounded story where Albert Einstein goes back in time, murders Hitler with the power of just his touch and returns to the present to see what happened.

Love that the Space Harrier bonus stage just attached the sprite of the player character to not-Falcor's back. The pose doesn't change, the posture doesn't change, it's like he's an action figure that's been glued in-place.

There is also C&C Funpark in the first game that you had to enter a command string in DOS to get to. One word, Dinosaurs.

I swear people whine about Ashley more than she ever whines about anything in the actual game. It's almost like she's an unarmed civilian with no combat training stuck in a village full of monsters.

What about the Golden Temple from Donkey Kong Country Returns. It takes place in the sky, and you have to platform across giant fruit (including, of course, giant bananas). It feels like a weird dream or acid trip compared to the rest of the game. And while they're not bonus levels per se, but rather parts of levels, the warp sectors of Meteo and Sector X in Star Fox 64 are worth mentioning. Everything is glowing bright colors, the enemies are weird and your teammates never talk to you, making it all a strange experience.

Kinda surprised none of the bonus levels from Zombies Ate My Neighbors are on here. I mean it has a Day of the Tentacle level, and one where you have to save an anthropomorphic fly from being eaten.

I know another strange level. In the videogame 'Terminal Velocity' there is a bonus world which can be accessed by doing the following: When you have to fill in your name and callsign, you have to fill this in: As your name you have to fill in 'Terminal' (without the quotes) and your callsign 'Reality' (without quotes). That will bring you to world 0-0

Another thing that's really cool about the giant ants in Red alert is that besides the bonus missions in the Counter-Strike expansion or in retaliation, they're actually is a map you can play against the computer on or against other people on in the skirmish mode that also has the giant ants and you can ally with them at least on the PC version.

I think the Street Fighter II car smashing level is a reference to Final Fight, where the player could destroy one one of the villains cars. It's also a Lexus LS400, not a Toyota.

I've got to disagree with smashing up a car in Street Fighter 2. Be me aged 19. With all my mates. Paul was a couple of years older than me and had a Porsche. He purchased another Porsche and only wanted the engine. We all got to smash the rest of the car to pieces with hammers and crowbars etc lol. Ahhh 1997 was an amazing year.

My brother likes the Kingdom Hearts series, but I've always hated the Disney tie-ins. However, I had him turn controls over to me on multiple gummy ship levels and I loved them, felt like a spiritual successor to Star Fox 64 tbh. Lol I still can't stand that crap though, Sora is literally wearing Ronald MacDonald style clown shoes and who TF can take a massive key seriously as a blade lol.

Fallout 3's Tranquility Lane mission was pretty trippy. (prolly not considered a "bonus level", but still) One of my favorite missions ever in a game. (In terms of pure aesthetics and atmosphere)

I completely skipped DC in FO3 in my first playthrough (I blew up megaton early on a renegade playthrough) and went directly to Tenpenny tower. I was adventuring around tenpenny tower and found a random gas station with a secret basement. I was blown away that I found tranquility lane completely by accident just exploring the wasteland. I've never had an experience like that outside of Elden Ring. New Vegas, FO4, BotW had little impact on me due to that first playthrough of FO3.

Im always amused about how you use a short animation of some email delivery code while talking about game development. Its funny because no one would use such an interface for published apps like games, because you have to append security infos to authenticate with the cloud service.
