I have a 27 year old African Grey who recently became a plucker when he took a tumble from the top of his 6' tall cage to the bottom while hanging upside down. He had his left wing amputated as a baby at the flight joint due to a vet clipping him too short! Anyway, he got a hematoma under the armpit and began plucking. He's been in a e-collar now for a month. Yesterday was the first day out and went straight away back to plucking! I do hope I can get him back off of this. I can't find ways to get him on FRESH veggies. He hates them. He's on Harrison Coarse, Lafeber's Classic Nutri Berries. He also eats some fruits and chicken. TOYS are truly difficult to find now that Foster and Smith have gone out of business. I'm having trouble finding toys that aren't made in the USA where I can trust the dyes and the metals. Do you have any suggestions for me? We don't even have an AVIAN vet in our state. Noah has been blessed to have a mom who is an Animal Behaviorist and Wildlife rehabber. Thanks. Connie in SD

Mine was perfectly happy with a filthy cage, and only a swing as a toy. I cleaned it weekly, and every time I did, he squawked at me, and then got super happy when I brought it back after cleaning it He also didn't care for ANY toys except his swing. So we spent lots of money on toys, and he's like "I just like the swing" Ok then lol He hated being touched too, but loved going on my shoulder

I hear you. Bought a 3 yr old female cockatiel that was returned to the store. Have a feeling she had rough owners, because after 6 months she still is scared of hands. Even though I got her stick trained after a while, and she's obsessed with sitting on my shoulder, she absolutely goes onto a panic at the sight of a finger.

a good tip is to have planty of clean bowls in the cabinet so even if you’re in a rush you can just quickly change their bowls twice a day! can’t understand some of those people who doesn’t get how dangerous it is for your birds to not get their nutrients and consume bacteria...

She should be using stainless steel bowls herself as the plastic ones harbor bacteria & can be cheered and swallowed by your birds. Most cages come with 2 to 4 bowls and you can buy extra sets. We have 8 bowls and use 6 a day, 2 change outs with breakfast & dinner & have bowls that go with their play stands that also have fresh water and tops pellets in them in case they want to chew on something when they are moving around.

That poor bird in the dirty cage with no toys! That's torture! I hope you give us an update when the bird is liberated. I'm afraid that with an owner who already allows this bad situation, they could clean the cage and put in toys just to get you off their back, and easily revert to their old habits if you're not around. I'm a pet sitter and it bothers me when people don't have extra food and water dishes for their animals. You have to have extras that you can swap out and wash. Others scoop their cats' litter boxes only once a week. Boxes should be scooped once or twice a day. I feel especially bad when the kitty is forced to repeatedly step into a dirty box....and they have kids. You've done a great service with this video.

I have a female cockatoo I have had for 19 years. I got her at 7 months old. She has never bitten me. Maybe because I was lucky to get a bird with a nice personality or possibly because she will push me away with her foot or her beak if she does not want to do something or be petted and I respect her wishes and don't push it. Yes, she can be loud but not very often. I have noticed that she will get grumpy at sundown when her internal clock says it is bedtime. If I don't put her to bed then she will start screeching eventually. I must turn off the lights in the room and she wants the cage covered. If I leave even the front of the cage uncovered, she will call to me to come over and cover it. Then she will go to sleep. She does love her cage and I keep the door open with a rope perch that connects from the cage door around to the side of the cage. I work from home so this is possible. The only time I close and lock the cage door is if I go out of the house with my wife. Since Cockatoo’s are in the cavity nesters family, I made her a cave by cutting up milk bone medium dog biscuit boxes on the play top of her cage. It took 3 and make an L shaped cave by cutting and tapping them together, which she loves and spends hours each day playing in there. She loves to tear up the dog biscuits instead of wooden toys. They are much cheaper. (Get 330 for $11.) She takes the biscuits into the cave and tears them up. Every couple of weeks I empty it out and give the remains to the wild birds outside. (She does not eat them.) She wants to go in the shower with me, so I put another shower curtain rod up inside the the shower above me head about about 6 inches. Those small stick on perches kept falling off and this gives her the whole range to walk up and down the rod. Try it!! My desk is right beside her cage and when she is ready she will come over to me for a pet and a nap in my lap. She is my best friend next to my wife. She is healthy, no feather picking etc.. Rick

I used to have a cockatiel that hated *all* showers and misting, and didn't take baths when a shallow bowl was available. Managed to realize he absolutely loved being blow dried (!) though, so that became a decent substitute. Used lowest heat at a distance, with a guaranteed teflon-free dryer mind you. Little guy would stretch his wings and try to preen himself everywhere at once.

My grandma bought two budgies and she mistreats them so much. They’re constantly locked in their cage and when they do try to take them out they grab them so that only their heads are sticking out, I’ve seen the cage and the bottom is littered in bird poop and eventually one of the budgies died and I’m guessing it’s because of the way it was treated.

Holy hell. That's awful. In Pakistan, I saw a budgie and a green parrot (Senegalese?) , and they were basically locked in an incredibly tiny cage. They didn't even chirp. It was like they were super depressed. We had a MUCH bigger cage just for our budgie in the UK, and he was let out every day at about 9am. He was very considerate too. He wouldn't make much of a fuss of being let out, if he thought you were also napping on the bed in the living room. He also disliked my dad, because he'd chase him around the room, so we used to get him in his cage before he was there and then after he left, the little birb was like "He's gone. You can let me out now" with his little dance on the front of the cage.

I got a little cockatiel that isn't tame. He doesn't like going out of his cage and would bite us if we show our hands. Even with that, we managed to play with him, gave him a big cage so he doesn't feel squished, we talk and sing to him and he loves that! I would love to take him out of the cage sometimes but he's too old to be tame. Even with that, we manage to make him live happily! ^^ (he's 10 years old now and it's really impressive! :D)

My bird likes to get out of its cage and sleep with my cat and dog. It depends on the bird. You SHOULD introduce them slowly but regularly if possible to reduce stress between all of your animals. Your bird will let you know if it absolutely doesnt want to be friends. But a lot of a time they are curious and want to k ow your cat or dog, just keep them supervised at all times. Large dogs tend to be more gentle with birds and realize they are fragile, cats however still get annoyed and get excited if the bird moves quickly so it's still best to keep cats away.

I bought budgies for my Conure. I noticed when I’d return from an appt or errand he would squat down, wings slightly out and vibrate with a stance that he was going to fly toward me. Since he now has budgies he no longer does that. He says Jacob birdie when I come home. The budgies wake up and stretch and sing at that time too. Only wish I could touch my Conure. He was a rehome. The previous owner sold him to the pet shop here in town telling them he was mean. He was in a small cage, no toys and one long hardened leather thing the hung down about 8” and he slept in the top part that was curled. We get along well but he loves to bite my hands if I’m not careful. Glad he understands English.

You know a lot about birds, more than I could ever hope to know. I definitely never knew about not touching your bird on its back, and I was literally raised in a household that never had any less than four or five parrots at any given moment. My mom frequently fostered parrots, or would rescue them until she found a permanent home. Plus we had two parrots that were our personal pets as well. I do have a question though. You said that birds don’t like the family dog or cat, they just act like they do because it’s instinctual for them to not show fear. Is there any possibility that this could be a product of the environment? For example if you bring your bird up in a household with these animals from the time that they’re young, then it will be different? When I was a kid, we had an African Grey that would climb up onto the counter, open up the dog treat container, and then proceed to call the dog over and throw down treats. He would also hop down and run around with the dog all day long. On more than one occasion we would actually find the bird sitting on one of the dog pillows right next to the dog. It was an older dog and of only a medium sized breed, but still. We also had a macaw that would frequently pick up dog toys and attempt to entice our other dog into playing with her. I actually have a photo somewhere of my dog holding one end of a stuffy, the macaw holding the other end. Not necessarily playing tug-of-war, but definitely playing with each other. In this case that dog was a small breed dog, and the macaw was roughly the same size as her. That definitely could’ve been a contributing factor to the macaw not being too concerned. But yeah and now as an adult, I live in a house with four cats, and I have a Conure. My youngest cat Monty started laying on top of the birdcage when he was around nine months old, and even though we would always shoo him off he would continuously jump up onto it. I started noticing that my bird not only did not seem bothered by it, but actually seemed entertained. Like with the birds when I was growing up, I do not keep my bird locked in his cage all day long. I frequently leave his door open so he can come and go as he pleases. I noticed that whenever Monty would jump up onto the cage, my bird would actually climb out and up onto the cagetop perch. At first I thought he was climbing up there to try to fight the cat off, and would always jump up to intervene, but quickly realized that he would climb up the ladder right past Monty and just sit on the perch on top of the cat. And the cat could not be bothered with the bird. Occasionally if Monty appears a little too interested, and gets too close, the bird will nip him, but generally they don’t really mess with each other other than being near each other. I am also very vigilant when any of the cars are running around and the birdcage door is opened at the same time, to make sure a situation like this does not go south. But it’s progress over the past several months, to now sometimes my bird will climb out of his cage down onto the ground and will walk over to wherever Monty is laying and will climb up onto something in the immediately adjacent vicinity. For example if Monty is lying on his cat bed, my bird will climb up onto the top of the coffee table that the cat bed is next to. If my cat is on top of the entertainment center, the bird will climb up and then sit on top of one of the picture frames on the entertainment center. None of the other cats seem even slightly interested in my parrot, and he largely ignores them. But he and Monty genuinely seem like they are friends. So I’m just wondering if all these situations are due to the fact that all of these birds came into our household while they were still very young, and grew up around the dogs/cats? Or what is at play here...?

Your Puffman is just like my first parrot, my 14 year old Senegal Clicks. She can be quite nippy but is pretty comical and friendly overall. She has a nasty habit of flying after people when they are in my room and landing on them in order to bite their necks and faces. I keep her in the cage when I have guests in my room (Like a few hours per month haha) just because I would be devastated if someone swatted her or something either on accident or on purpose.

@@coffeenair if noone would buy birds this industry wouldnt exist. If people buy less birds they will breed less birds jts easy as that. We need to adopt the ones who are already here but finally stop shopping for birds so one day there will be no birds for sale anymore

Awee... Victoria is Beautiful 💜 i have a 6 years old Umbrella Cockatoo I hand raised named Jake. He so well balanced. He's an only child and I'm a stay at home mom... I enjoy cooking for him, spending our days together and it might sound crazy, but I enjoy cleaning his room and cage.. I could never let his cage get so dirty like the ones in the video. How could anyone neglect their bird that way..its heartbreaking... This is the first video I found of yours and I subscribed 😊 the video was great !

Someone left their parrots cage filthy. No clean water and the food was disgusting. How do people get away with this? It makes me very sad. * You should be applauded for this video. The portion of the video about inappropriate touching of parrots bodies is particularly important for people to be mindful about...you are so right. Touching Cockatiels and Cockatoos ~ all birds~ can lead to them suffering and their death. Birds/animals should never knowingly suffer because of humans. Thank you very much for an excellent video. I 🐦💕

If people don't think a poop-covered cage is an issue, ask them if they would like to live in a cage for a week with no toilet. I can't believe that has to be a tip, but I guess it has to be said. Great video!

Puffman did an excellent job of showing what a birb might do if you don't do "step up" properly :) Most of your tips involve simple logic--keep birbs and cages clean, offer clean, healthy food, don't startle them or pet them improperly, give them plenty of attention and fun toys. etc. If you can't take care of ANY pet properly, please don't get one!
