3 major things I relate to: 1. the "if you like books you must be studious and quiet and an introvert". I am none of those things. I've always been a very unmotivated student, I am very loud and very outgoing. I can be loud and also like sitting quietly for hours reading. I don't need people to remark on how funny it is that books make me shut up. 2. the "how do you find time to read?" this was especially prevalent when I was in law school and then later when I was studying for the bar. I like reading. I would find time for it in the morning, in the night time, as a reward for finishing a chapter of tax law. People got so judgey, thinking I was wasting my time and "shouldn't I be studying more and anyway, how could I afford to buy any books at all when I was unemployed and studying". It's priorities. literally just priorities. and understanding that for me reading wasn't a chore, it was a break from boring law reading and studying. it's two very different parts of the brain for me. I didn't get too tired to read just because I spent 10 hours reading bar prep material. And of course, most common of all, 3. the book snobbery. I've heard "why do you read so much fantasy?" from so many people in my family, and "aren't you too old for that?" about YA. or, "why don't you try reading real books" meaning classics or non-fiction. like, I'm perfectly capable of reading all those things. I read Victor Hugo and Cassandra Clare and Brandon Sanderson and Jodi Picoult and I like all of it. I don't read a lot of non-fiction, but when I do, I enjoy it. I hate it when people say "oh, but that isn't a challenging book. isn't it too easy?" i mean, yeah, it's easy. it's supposed to be fun. Reading is my biggest hobby. I want it to be enjoyable. It doesn't mean that I don't challenge myself and sometimes read books that aren't as "fun" but for the most part, i want to have a good time. I don't need to prove anything to anyone. And you'd think that the people in my life would be aware that I am more than capable of reading difficult things. I spend most of my days reading case law and writing legal briefs. I know how to read and write. I just like to read fun things for fun. Anyway, end of rant. As you can tell, I agree with a lot of what was said lol.

I'm an avid reader but I'm also SO frugal. I buy about 5-10% of my books and utilize my library for the other 90%+. It's so cool to be able to read free books, and when I do buy books it's either indie authors, books that I LOVED and want to re-read, or authors that I trust knowing I'll enjoy their books. I also don't like clutter, and if I bought all 500 books on my TBR, I'd have no space in my room lmao but to each their own of course. If people can afford it, go ahead.

Of course it is a different way of consuming a story, but that doesn't mean one way is better than the other. Honestly, sometimes I wish I'd like to listen to audiobooks. I could be more productive or I could get to hear the author themselves if I was lucky. It's not for me tho. But it is perfect for you. Shockingly, we all differ from each other. Some people don't understand that yet. With that said, keep enjoying what you enjoy, Wilhelmina :D

I don’t count audiobooks om my Goodreads challenge, generally. People seem to take offence when I say that and I can see why - however, I do NOT say that others aren’t allowed to count their audiobooks listenings. I often do other things when I listen to audiobooks and my brain has a tendency to wander when I do that, so sometimes I miss chunks of the story. I also started using goodreads as a way of motivating myself to start reading books again instead of listening to them, because it simply makes me focus in a different way. It wouldn’t make sense for me to tell a more auditive person (or anyone that gets a lot out of audiobooks) that their audiobooks “don’t count”. We all work differently and there are no rules. Read what you want in whatever medium that you want - whatever works for you.

Honestly I can usually separate a story from the author. Although to be fair it would depend on what the creator of the novel had been caught up in. I think most of the time it should be down to the individual to decide. I don't think anyone should be told what they can or cannot enjoy, as long as people are respectful of others .

For the Romance books question/statement: Romance =/= Erotica You can totally have romance without any sex on the page or even the implication of sex on the page (ie "fade to black after entering the bedroom"). Also, I have a cronic disease that produces muscular pain and I listen audiobooks because I sometimes can't even hold a book, well, most people that I know don't get it. And the last thing I can relate to is the genre. I read fantasy and romance mostly. Sometimes together or separate. I think a lot of people treat romance readers as if their reading something worth no substance just because there’s sex in it, which is crazy to me. Nothing wrong with erotica, if that’s what you’re reading then you know what you’re getting. But a regular romance book? Sure there’s sex in it but there’s more to it than that. I know a lot of people in the romance book community are looked down upon. To add I agree with what you said about the Witcher. A girl can’t read the Witcher or fantasy? a conversation that occurs frequently between me and my friends is something along the lines of "so what have you been up to lately? - well mostly reading, as usual - cool! as for me i've been binging tv shows like a complete degenerate" - like??? what am i supposed to say to that? we're both consuming fiction in different forms in our free time and yet there's this weird division they've constructed to imply that what i'm doing is a more useful activity. it's like they think i'm judging them so they use this self-deprecating language to do it first. but ofc i do nothing of the sort and yet i don't want to reassure them that watching tv is fine cause the whole situation seems very dumb to me. this mindset is harmful both for people who like to watch stuff in their free time and those who like to read bc it casts them into this role of a /superior/ person with /superior/ tastes who cares very much about /intellectual/ things and isn't fun at all. which is ironic cause 90% of the time i'm reading literally the /intellectual/ equivalent of what they are watching ://

The audiobook one always annoys me because they're great. Especially when you have a good narrator, it reminds me of an old time radio performance where they have the story come to life through audio. I like to have them on in the car during long car rides, they really help to pass the time. For me it's like the book has come to life and your listening to the cast of characters. Plus another thing I love about audiobooks, so many books print in tiny print and have their lines close together and with my eyesight that can be a hindrance, probably why I use my kindle more than actual physicals print cause I can make everything bigger. But when you listen, you don't have to worry about print size. Something that bothers me when it comes to books, is big blockchains that go after the smaller independent companies and can make a monopoly over what books are put out and for what price. Because a lot of times they censor what kind of material that goes out and their prices are inflated.

In case of separating art from the artists... ultimately it'll com to whether your money and your.. clout basically, helps someone who'll use that to harm real people. I don't think reading problematic books is a no-no, but if reading that means you'll have to buy that book..... then that's a choice. You'll probably be judged for buying a special edition HP set, but reading some horrendous book knowing it's a horrendous book shouldn't warrant a drama. It's just.. so many people either take this as a way to not criticize what they're reading/ justify or defend certain stuff and go overboard with the "makes my brain go brr lol" thing... choices really.

I definitely belong to the "separate the art from the artist" faction, certainly within the realm of 'fiction'. There are individual exceptions, of course. Such as Goodkind's famous/infamous series. Even those I enjoyed early on, for their nonsensical absurdity. But, after a point the books became too obviously sermons on a particular political philosophy I am at odds with. At that point I abandoned the series. But, I can and will still re-read those early entries from time to time. Now, non-fiction books on political / social / economic matters are another story. With those, I have no qualms about ignoring works by 'authors' whose views I disbelieve in.
