NUMBER 7!!! I think most people considering a BC don't realize how much time and attention they can require. BUT...totally worth it!

I have a 1 yr old border collie/great Pyrenees mix. He is beautiful and very playful. Ive had 4 other great Pyrenees but never a border collie. This pup has had seperation anxiety from the day i got him as a puppy. Hes getting somewhat better but has meltdowns when i have to leave him with my other two small dogs for even a few minutes. He also wont listen to my commands at crucial times. Great Pyrenees are very independent like that as if they are the boss but was not sure of border collies.

We have a 3 month old border/collie/pyrenees mix. He is wonderful but a handful! Watching all of these vids as he is very different from the goldens I've had. Any other advice you can give that maybe very specific to that mix?

Border Collies don't make good pets, but they do make the best companions you could ever wish for. I have been fortunate to have had 7 Collies over my life time with one currently sitting across from me at the dining room table staring me out. He wants to go into the garden even though he's just had 2 hours in the woods chasing squirrels and his ball. One tip always allow them to have a break after eating before allowing them back out to chase pigeons, balls and their nemeses the grey squirrel. The sun is out so we will be spending the best part of the day in the garden, before he goes down to the beach for another 2 hour play time. This is the only time he gets sassy trying to get him back in the car to come home, the beach has to be his number 1 fav place.

I have a 4 year old rescue Border Collie. She is non aggressive, friendly and likes trying to herd squirrels by giving them the “ Border Collie Stare.” My issue is she likes to be alone if we are not out walking. She usually will go to another room or a different part of the room to have her space. Often she will go to sleep but other times she is simply laying down but awake. I will go over and pet her for awhile but then give her space. She will also come over to me and lay in her bed next to my chair. Sometimes she is sitting on the sofa and if I try to pet her for any length of time, she will jump down and go over to her bed. She does like quiet. Thunderstorms or someone moving things around upstairs can sometimes make her want to go over to her bed in the empty bedroom. No barking, or shaking, but just isolation in her bed. I do have white noise that I play when there is thunder. It does help but she is still nervous. My vet suggested Trazadone to help with her anxiousness but I don’t really see any difference. She still isolates and possibly sleeps more. Any ideas on what this is? Her brother and sister, also strays that were found with her easily came over to the people who rescued them off the street. My pup had to have a food bait with a kennel that locked behind her to finally retrieve her. Any help would be appreciated.

Loud noises affects them a lot, some more than others. White noise helps yeah, also calm music and any other distractions. What your vet suggests would only be useful if she gets really scared and you can’t get her to calm down.

@@thecagdot Thank you! I had not thought about the calming music. I do believe the sounds are what is triggering it. She has a very keen sense of hearing. Again, thank you for your reply.

I’ve had working border collies for 30 years and worked w rescue border collies. As with people, some are just less “cuddly” and touchy. It’s just a personality. But I would recommend finding time to do some training (in a positive way) perhaps some games and puzzle type things. That will help build confidence and a bond. I have one dog who is so bonded to me, will do anything for me. He doesn’t like too much fawning over him. That’s in contrast to another of mine who can’t get close enough. Perhaps don’t force it, they are a working dog and do like playing games with us. Tricks. An agility class, or other interactions can only improve your dogs confidence

Border collies have been shown to appreciate quiet rather than music ,not even classical music. Imagine having to listen to a noise you have no control over.

Hey lying in her bed next to your chair is her way of showing that you’re her person and she loves you. Rather than lapdogs, Border Collies tend to be under chair dogs. They were bred to work all day with Scottish farmers, after all. Training is their love language. I trained my Allie to give me air kisses (licking right in front of my face) on command and my roommate trained her to jump up to put her front paws on his chest on command. Having a daily routine you do inside together can also create bonds. Allie liked hanging out in the kitchen with me while I cooked us both dinner- I know how silly that sounds but dogs are way more appreciative and less picky than roommates and once a dog has seen you cook for them they will adore you above all others and forever. So, if there’s anything in your daily routine that could be improved by the addition of a Border Collie, I suggest inviting her to participate.

The dog is weird socially. They're insanely smart. They like to be trained. They like it more than anything else. Petting them won't make them that happy, food alone won't make them that happy. Culturally in america people collect dogs to look pretty or be killers. while the border collie is a circus animal. Then no one will understand why you have a circus animal even the trainers. they're used to people calling them to shock the crap out of their dog to make them stop running away. This dog will hunt you down. If you don't give them attention they start going crazy. they get really mad at you like a rejected girlfriend. seriously if they want attention they'll bite you if you try to get them out of your room. they'll tuck themselves in a corner or behind furniture so that you can't move them. it's creepy intelligent. It has advanced planning skills like it seems to think about it's life. It has an animated personality too. you can tell it's emotional states almost like an orangutan. It almost has ape like mannerisms. Most dogs are dumb and they just going around smelling stuff like a basset hound. You have conversations about border collies wondering what it's doing. You can tell because there are lots of videos like this about border collies. I bet if you're in a bar in Ireland sheep country you'll hear nothing but drunks talking about the crazy thing their border collie did that day.

I am planning on getting a border colloie, but i have a few questions. Are they able to live in a pretty big apartment and can be left alone for about 4 hours? If left alone, do those puzzle games work?
@thecagdot
@thecagdot Месяц назад
Yeah sure, 4 hours is okay to leave them alone for, and yeah, puzzle toys and games will keep them busy until you get back.

You need a yard for a Border Collie. I have one and they absolutely need to run and play at least 2 hours a day. Get a different dog.

I don't have a Border Collie so I can't tell, but it's a good thing to know what to pay attention to, before I get myself a dog, like for example a Border Collie
