OvErtHetArGEt, you have gotten it correct: "Smooth Jazz" IS a misnomer in significance and application, designed to mislead the general public - among other reasons. Although the genre is beautiful by any standard, it's NOT Jazz; it's simply commercially "sweet" music which was exemplified during the '60's, also on soprano saxophone, the sax(c)ello soprano saxophone, by, for example, King Curtis, viz: A Change Is Gonna Come You've Lost That Loving Feeling Soul Serenade Melancholy Serenade The Girl From Ipanema Summer Dream Little Green Apple And I Love Her Floatin' La Jeanie Crying Time Something Blowing In The Wind *Wichita Lineman *Spanish Harlem A Whiter Shade Of Pale...etc. As a performer of Smooth Pop, RnB, Funk, Fusion, Gospel, Rhymes - - - for the most part, I can distinguish between Jazz and other genres in the same way I am able to discriminate between, let's say, French and Haitian, or Spanish and Latin (as written) To me, "Smooth Jazz" connotes JAZZ PLAYED SMOOTHLY. Thus, Lester Young, Scott Hamilton, Zoot Sims, Bud Shank, David Newman, Houston Person and Clifford Jordan are a few Organic Smooth Jazz exponents who come to mind - JAZZ played smoothly. Fausto Papetti of the '60's, '70's, '80's fame and monetary success, was commercially SMOOTH, aided by saxophones (and clarinet) varnished with echoes and reverbs which enhanced his sound marvelously. The public was never misled into thinking he was playing Jazz - Smooth or otherwise. Same could be said of commercial saxophonists John "Ace" Cannon, Boots Randolph, Junior Walker, Jimmy Castor of that era - to list a few. Forgive me, my friend; I am with you.
@drronclark
@drronclark 2 года назад
I don’t think they have to be mutually exclusive. I think you can appreciate Grover Washington Jr., Spyro Gyra, or early Yellow Jackets (Samurai Samba period), but still love you some Oliver Nelson, Rollins, Cannonball, Bird, Brecker, Jacquet, Trane, etc. If you are not into modal jazz, that doesn’t make you a simpleton. If you hate smooth jazz, that does not make you a musical sophisticate. I love both. I can listen to Kind of Blue (Miles Davis w. Cannonball and Trane), Blues and the Abstract Truth (Oliver Nelson), Something Else (Cannonball), and then put on some Grover (Winelight) or Access All Areas. It’s art, and beauty can exist both simultaneously in simplicity and complexity. The fact that the saxophone lends itself so well to such a wide range of art (not to mention the catch that it is intrinsically a piece of visual art) should be celebrated … not judged. Kudos to Dave for pointing out the pettiness of the critics.

“Smooth Jazz” is really just a marketing term. It’s not really jazz at all, at least in the classic sense. It’s really just instrumental pop music. Its commercial. That’s it. Jazz is a real art form that explores so many different types of aspects within harmony, rhythm, and other textures. Yes, it is an intellectual music. And anyone that goes out of their way to learn something about it will gain knowledge.
@jonnobloggs1139
@jonnobloggs1139 3 года назад
I completely disagree with your statement. Jazz in its "classic" sense was the popular songs and dance music of the 20's, 30's and 40's which then became intellectualisd and therefore difficult to listen to for the casual music fan. That very casual listener would challenge your statement by arguing that when you intellectualise something it loses its mass appeal and becomes dull and boring only satisfying a metropolitan elite minority.

True story, believe it or not. As a student at UW in Seattle, I got to hear some of Kenny G's senior recital tape. It was amazing. It sounded like John Coltranes recording "Expression". The class was blown away when the Professor said it was Kenny G. He said Kenny G told him afterthe recital that he loved Bird and Trane, but they could never be equaled, and his heart was in R&B and pop, and that's what he was going to do on sax. True story. I'm not supporting or judging, just passing on the story.

I like smooth jazz. Everything you said in this video is actually a reason to like and enjoy smooth jazz. And yes, it IS jazz. Take that, all you jazz purists out there. We jazzin’ with groove and melody. Those who still want to argue about it better go listen to a musical argument about what is or is not jazz. I’d recommend Jazz Not Jazz by Evan Marks. Try that on for size. Also, enough respect to Hank Crawford, Grover Washington Jr., David Sanborn, Ernie Watts, Tom Scott, Ronnie Laws, James Moody, John Handy, George Howard, Najee, Warren Hill, Steve Cole, Dave Koz, Kenny Garrett, Kim Waters, Walter Beasley, Kenny G and Candy Dulfer and all the others who have produced beautiful problem free music for us to experience and enjoy. If I went through all the guitarists, pianists flautists, trumpeters, bassists and drummers who have contributed to this music and given me much pleasure, I’d be here all night. But much respect and thanks to them all, whether they’re still with us or not. Peace.

SMOOTH to Jazz is what SOCIAL is to justice. If it needs an adjective before it, it isn't really that THING. That doesn't mean it doesn't have its time and place; Elevators... Grocery stores... Funeral homes... I don't need help getting laid or buried... but Thanks! I'm 55 years old and I've been in the music business most of my life. I spent 13 years in Seattle and actually knew Kenny for a short while and - you can believe this or not, it's not really the point - he told me, You'll never go broke appealing to the lowest common denominator. Bless his heart.

Do you now understand now the flaw in your logic? If something requires an adjective in front of it that just means that thing is a specific varietal of that thing. Smooth jazz is as much still jazz as mumble rap is still rap. Is it different than you grew up with? Yes. But is it still a valid subgenre? Also yes.

It is a commercial term that successfully stuck when musicians with instruments commonly played in jazz started playing music in a more manner more relatable to more people. HOWEVER ... like many who now enjoy jazz ... artists like Grover Washington Jr., Kirk Whalum, George Benson and Kenny G, created a forum that ushered many (like me)into that appreciation. God I hate smooth jazz for reals, Yeah some of them have soul, But most don't even have notes that syncopate, Jazz is an umbrella term for improvised syncopated African American music, I wouldn't hate smooth jazz if it was called "instrumental pop" atleast people won't confuse it with real jazz.

The issue is that there was a genre called “jazz” long before there was “smooth jazz” and smooth jazz has little to no connection to other forms of jazz. This has NOTHING to do with which is “better”, that’s just a matter of personal taste. But it raises the question, why did they name it like it’s a form of jazz? It’s just not the same thing, not even similar.
@DavePollack

"They" are the radio stations/labels in order to market it - it was NOT the musicians themselves who called it smooth jazz.
@slickrockcreek1

@@DavePollack Yes, fair point, and I have been told many times that Kenny G himself does not call his music jazz. For the record, I like the music but I get a little irritated when I hear people refer to it as “jazz”, sometimes omitting the word ”smooth”. BTW I also would not call it “smooth R&B” either, which I think someone on this thread suggested. It is its own thing, and it should have its own name, in my (perhaps not-so-humble) opinion.

I'm absolutely fine with Kenny G etc making lots of money from the Music they prefer to produce. It's all Music and preferences, fans choose what works or is palatable for them. However, give me Herbie Hancock, Parker, Coltrane, Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Weather Report, Miles and the the so many Jazz icons (Big Band, Bebop, Hard Bop, Fusion and the like) ANY DAY. As a Musician, I'd prefer something a lot more robust and challenging, beyond making a living. That's why it's important for Musicians to have a day job in addition. Greetings from Uganda 🇺🇬👊🏿🖤

Smooth jazz = insipid perversion of the art form 'real' jazz which challenges you to actually pay attention to what you are listening to. If I wanted to listen to music of the same intellectual and emotional involvement I'd just hop on an elevator.

@@DavePollack Pat Metheny knows. If Kenny played without the attitude it would be ok. But he lies to everyone that it takes 20 years to circular breathe and play! Well guess what, the only reason I picked up my Alto sax, is to play smooth "jazz", I don't really like the real "jazz" to me and this is my opinion, there is nothing beautiful about playing fast and improvising on chords and scales, I don't really like Coltrane, cannonball, brecker or any of those people, don't get me wrong they were excellent jazz players, but to me jazz is just a bunch of notes played fast that don't sound like music.

I started loving saxophone because of one song: Show me the way by Dave Koz, yeah I know it sounds cheesy, but I would have never started this instrument listening to some Charlie Parker, because it makes no sense for my ears, and for the ears of many people obviously; because elitist jazz is not catchy at all, not to hate but it sounds more like a show off of skill than something created to reach people's heart, and each time I hear it I'm like " wow the guy knows his scales " yeah It's impressive and high level but what's the point of music if it's not to convey emotions ?
