I'm an Aussie expat living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for 2 years. In this video, I tell you why it's one of the best decisions I've made in my life.
I've explored Malaysia (& South East Asia) and have much to say about what I LOVE. Here are the top 10 things I love about Malaysia as a country and a place to live (including Malaysian culture, lifestyle, people, and of course, Malaysian food!)
If you're a foreigner, this video will help you decide if visiting or moving to Malaysia is right for you.
If you're local, this video will help you understand an expat's perspective of your beautiful country.
Check it out:
0:36 - WEATHER
1:44 - COST OF LIVING
2:36 - RENTAL MARKET
4:09 - SUPER APPS
4:44 - TRANSPORT
5:41 - 'WOKE' CULTURE
6:43 - MALAYSIAN CULTURE
7:18 - DIVERSITY
8:36 - SAFETY
9:12 - LOCATION (TRAVEL)
10:07 - MALAYSIAN FOOD
I am not an expert on Malaysia (yet), and I may get some things wrong, but this is my authentic opinion based on my experiences. Please correct me in the comments and we can all learn more about Malaysia.

2:35 Yes, true. But being from one of the Malaysian Bornean State, we now can get nice commercial rice wine. Sarawak even has our own beer - 1602 craft beer. I'm no drinker myself but once in a while, I would like a sip or two too. This is probably not known to you because expats don't visit the other side of Malaysia except for the beaches and diving in Sabah, so their impression of Malaysia is peninsula-centric.

One thing foreign youtubers always fail to mention or more likely take for granted of is how english is widely used in Malaysia especially compared to countries like Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam or even east asian countries like Japan, S. Korea, China etc. Pretty much everything important is written in english (signboards, apps, instructions, restaurant menus etc plus there are even multiple english speaking radio stations too). U can also go to hospitals, police stations, government agencies etc and use english there without much issues. Hey, I'm a local, and my english is ok right? 😅

Amazing review. We wanna “Thank You” as a Malaysian.We honor positive vibes that You carry as of changes the atmosphere on social media, spreading the good news on Your platform. I live in KL past 28 years.I am native indigenous from the East of Peninsula of Malaysia so called “Borneo LIMBANG Sarawak” very closed to Brunei. I am in love with KL CITY .Amaze with the skyscrapers.Shopping Mall just amazing. I’ve visited Langkawi Island,Pangkor Island,Tioman Island,Cameron Highland,Genting Highland,Perhentian Island,visited Singapore,Thailand and Bali.Those were the days We touring around town to Ipoh.From Petaling Jaya to Kelantan longer hours driving 20 hours! back and forth to Langkawi and Penang Island,Taman Negara Pahang.We love travel and camping. Malaysia fantastic place to live,dream that I would never taught. I’ve met lovely,so friendly people here in KL,make lots of friends. There are also negative side and I choose to speak about the positive. Take a walk and a leisure time in the afternoon,cuppa of tea at Mamak Shop,The Masala Tea amazing. Feasting up to supper. I enjoyed the bus ride around KL City so much included out of town. Frequent travel with AirAsia for many years. “THANK YOU” for choosing MALAYSIA to live,explore the inner side,the beauty of mix cultures between so many races living in harmony. I served in privates health care services far too long,love seeing all kind of people.KL has the best public transportation. Glad You choose MALAYSIA 🇲🇾 as Your home. #TRULY ASIA ❤ 🇲🇾

Malaysia only has 2 weather (no winter by the way, and never snow) which are sunny all year round with occasional rain. There is a rain season which you may want to avoid. It could rain several times in a day (20-30 minutes long) or in some areas it may rain non stop for several days instead . Unless you do like to walk in the rain.

I personally like running in the rain 😆 I find rain bearable when it's warm, but terribly uncomfortable when it's cold.

Nice video Mate... I am not sure but did you mention the #1 ease about Malaysia is the fact of the English language spoken and used widely. 😊 It helps tremendously with assimilation compared to countries like Thailand, Indonesia, etc in South East Asia. Especially for bureaucracy issues as well as hospital visits. The ability to express yourself on a daily level whatever your activities are makes living in another country much easier when ones Mother tongue language is also spoken. 😁
@JackAlderton

How about Health Facilities? I think it is one of the best. You can walk in to any private clinics if you are not feeling well, you could see a doctor and get medicines in that clinic itself.

You are absolutely right. I plan to make another video just about healthcare. It is WAY better than Australia. I was able to see a specialist, get an MRI scan and see the specialist again a few hours later, for free. In Australia this would take weeks (or even months) and cost a lot of money.

Haha appreciate that. I'll give it some thought but I'll tell you one negative now - people get very defensive. It's hard to constructively criticise anything without getting in a fight. Though this is the same in most countries now.. including Australia, so it's not unique to Malaysia!
@zaharizak
@zaharizak 4 месяца назад
@@JackAlderton If the criticism comes in any other language but English, it is fine I guess because only citizens from that country will suck it up. Otherwise, if it's in English, the whole world will get the misinformation (if it is misinformation). So.. make sure you know your stuff.

Absolutely on points🎉 People really need to travel around to gauge the reality comparisons. Still, it depends on individual luck and fate. Many might not have such capacity to work it out. But for those who can, why not travel more and choose while they have choices in hand. When, a person is financially free and capable basically most countries around the world are good(i mean those good countries - most Europe and some Asian countries) to live but they lack of cultural diversity and tolerance like Malaysia and Singapore. Then, why Malaysia? Simply put - abundance of fresh products where you need not to worry about like people in other parts of the world. Able to live a bit lavishly and quality life but at a very discounted price. Boring? Just take a week or month to get wild in Thailand or Japan or Indonesia or elsewhere ... And back to Malaysia for a good relax and recharge ❤ - a dude from Melaka

What advice do you have for westerners, I'm from the USA, lookng for work in Malaysia? So far I haven't had much luck so any useful insights could be really hepful.
@JackAlderton
@JackAlderton 3 месяца назад
I'll try to help. I didn't actively seek work in Malaysia, it found me. Having said that, it's pretty obvious to me that Western education and even being a native english speaker is highly praised. I would try to find a writing job or something related to english language, you should be a shoe-in if you're from the USA. The hard part will be the wages, you might have to accept a fair bit less money unless your skillset is similar to the above.

I am a Malaysian so here are a few thoughts on your video. Firstly what is woke? It's become such a toxic word in western culture but all it is is awareness of social injustice and racial discrimination. It's a good thing if you think you're a decent person. Secondly crime in Malaysia is usually just petty crime like snatch theft etc. There is extremely low violent crime in Malaysia. Thirdly the fuel is heavily subsidised by the government but that ia going away. Diesel prices have already rosen dramatically and ron95 will also be going up soon. The subsidies are going to be targetted rather than blanketed. All the other points you've made are pretty much on point. Like you've said, if you live in or near the city center then public transport is relatively convenient but if you move into the suburbs then having a car is much more convenient.
@JackAlderton

Thanks for your comment! 1. I partly agree. Many 'good' people would consider themselves a good person (and be right) but be opposed to the prospect of being cancelled by a small minority for simply having a traditional opinion. If it's fair and bipartisan then in theory yes, but in practice, it's usually not. For example, the 'wokeness' I'm referring to may try (and have) to minimise my opinion and life experience based on the colour of my skin, which ironically is racial discrimination. 2. Absolutely! I will do a full video on this. 3. Yes it's interesting. If you tell someone from the West that fossil fuels are subsidised in any way they will be shocked 😂 (this goes back to point 1!) Thanks, and yes you're definitely right about the car. Not everywhere is covered by public transport (similar to most cities).

not sure if u know bout this,but regarding the alcohol thing,think i seen on most expat vid regarding this is,since malaysia @ any SEA countries are less streesed,and expat can spend 1/2 @ 1/3 from their earning (USD convert RM) working here (malaysia),they tend to less drink as they less stressed,headache, and the weather since sun is most out,its improved the mood,hence less the drinking..some even dont even drink anymore as they getting more happier,leisure life vs how they are in the western country..
@JackAlderton
@JackAlderton 4 месяца назад
yep I definitely agree with that! Makes a lot of sense. I hardly drink anymore and I don't party here, it's been much better for me mentally and for my self development. Thanks for sharing.

@@JackAldertonas someone a local & been exposed to the sun entire life,i kinda never get the gist/why the sun is so important whenever a foreigner always highlighted it out in litearally every vid i seen,but now i get it..being a cold country in a harsh condition (thanks to frostpunk (a surviving game) vs sunny .. back then,in my teen-early adult days,i used to party & clubbing meaning going to cyber cafe,spend hours on gaming pc 🤣🤣🤣..thats how hard i party back then

Excellent video!...I live in rural Vic and have just discovered Malaysia and can't wait to get out of Oz , it's slowly but surely become a country I just don't want to be in anymore. Totally agree with you about the "wokeness" and it just seems like a no brainer moving to somewhere like Malaysia 👍🏝️

Hi Jack , I am new to your channel, and you got me excited for the idea, your content delivery is great... So i have no idea if you mentioned what type of work you do in Kuala Lampor ? And if i wat to search for a job how can i do it in the area on interior design or design (Website name? or recruitment agencies?) Help appreciated :)
@JackAlderton

Thank you, appreciate you watching. I work for a finance company as a writer / content producer. Design I am not an expert in but I would suggest trying Jobstreet (like Seek in Aus) and probably LinkedIn will be your best bet. You could also research some larger design companies in Malaysia and reach out to them directly with your portfolio. There is a HUGE market for home improvement here, especially since pretty much every condo comes furnished. Check out 'the makeover guys' would be perfect for you!

Jack.. thanks for ur positive comments... Any country in the world will have it's up's and down.. I believe since ur working in center of KL... Due to convenience, time and travel factor u put up at ... KL... There are so many low rise accomodations.. around greater kl which provides.. scerene environment.. that most expat dont know... When they hit Malaysia it's bout city center... Give me million i wont choose anywhere around that damn twin towers😄... I rather choose places like country heights in Kajang... Do check out bro... Life needs to be less hectic

Haha very true - thanks for your comment. Yes i absolutely agree. Unfortunately I have to go into the office 3 times a week, so location is the most important to me. If i had full location independence I'd definitely move further out. I've been to Kajang, very nice!

In recent years, expatriates coming to Malaysia must be very satisfied, as the depreciation of the Malaysian Ringgit makes it very affordable for them. However, for us Malaysians, traveling abroad is becoming increasingly difficult.
@JackAlderton

That's true - thanks for sharing. Yes I have felt it a bit, I get paid in MYR and it has depreciated a fair bit against the USD and AUD. I hope it bounces back!

it's easy to calculate the difference in living profit in malaysia through the difference of your currency with the malaysia profit as much, if UK in malaysia the difference is 6x times. if usa is different 4x. if Australia is 3x different. UK citizens are very fortunate to live in Malaysia with 6x more profit than living in the UK by enjoying better facilities than the UK and Malaysia is more modern than the UK
