ABOUT A TO ZEN LIFE
Along my journey to let go of 30 years of clutter, I accidentally became a minimalist and it was life-changing.
Before, I was an emotional hoarder with nothing but the clutter from lost loved ones - and $25,000 of debt - to my name. Now I have a beautiful home in Europe, a happy family, live debt-free, and - best of all - wake up to a life that I’m EXCITED to live every day.
My mission is to help you conquer your clutter and simplify YOUR way to a happier and better life. HERE'S OUR STORY: atozenlife.com/about-a-to-zen...

Proud of you for doing 1 year no alcohol!!!🤩🥳 I just turned 36 on January 1st. And come April it will be 10 years that I quit drinking! I had alcoholic parents growing up and my father commited suicide when he was drunk. I was only 14. My mother still drinks and it’s a shame. She has no relationship with her daughters or grandchildren. My older sisters and I all don’t drink. We learned it isn’t worth the temporary fun.

My cast iron frying pans are well seasoned and as stick resistant as any pan I have ever used. I’ve used them every day for over forty years. The key with cast iron is to use them daily and they will remain stick free.

I fought the idea of audio books so much. Mainly because I was bothered by the fact that some people say it's not real reading. But now I don't care and I've been able to listen and enjoy so many good books ❤️ I love audio books and wish I would have started sooner

I can actually relate to that - I also used to think I was a visual learner and it wouldn’t stick! But I’ve been loving the audiobooks. Thanks for watching 🙏

I just don't tell people I listen to audio books instead of reading it. Or I tell them I don't have the time or patience to sit down and read. I can do chores around the house while listening. Sitting down feels like a luxury. No matter how you look at it I consider it reading, if you think about it in terms of, you are consuming and absorbing the information. How you consume and absorb is not relevant if you get value from it.

I always kind of thought it was cheating, too, but for non-fiction books especially, I pretty much never get through them if I'm doing the reading! It is so helpful being "forced" to press on to the end of a book I really do want to read (rather than feel guilty for yet another unfinished book) and I compensate for retention by skipping back here and there if I really need to let a new concept sink in. Also I can multitask and get things done while I read, so that is majorly satisfying! 😉

We’ve made homemade sushi at times. The furthest we’ve been able to make is shrimp tempura, salmon, tuna roll. My husband used to be a sous chef at a 5* hotel so it’s really nice seeing him pass on some of the skills he’s learned along the way. We even have some beautiful Asian theme dinnerware that we use specifically when we make sushi. I would love a video with you and your brother in law.

Dear Marissa, you have been my wake up call since last week. I spent three days decluttering and I just took to the donation box 12 bags full of clothes that my family and I were not using at all, I have separated boxes of toys for charity and other items to sell. My home feels much more free and today I was able to sit down and enjoy. After this video I crossed out of my list of "wants" a few things because they are not "needs", at least not for a while. Thank you so much for your videos. Just one more question, where did you get those trousers from? I live in Germany as well and I am experiencing the cold weather. ❄ ❄ ❄ ❄ As for the sushi class, yes please! 🙋🏻‍♀

I really want to say “Thank you” for creating this kind of content. Yesterday I finally took a step forward and went through my TV station with lots of shelves and a little cupboard. Today I went through my “huge” closet and collected 2 huge bags that I will send to charity. And also 7 bags of things that need to be utilised. Even though I had decluttering about 1,5 years ago. But now I found so many things that I originally liked, but they weren’t used for years! I decided to finally let them go. I am very far away from being a minimalist, but it feels much easier and also feels like I have more things that I had before! But now only nice and suitable stuff is present in my room. It’s very reachable and enjoyable now. Maybe 1 day I will finally turn into a minimalist. Probably when these things will be destroyed I will simply not buy any replacement for them again. And that’s how I will only have needed things in my life ❤

For anyone who is interested: I use a stainless steel pan and have NO issues with sticking if I use olive oil or butter. Look into vision ware if you like glass and vintage revere ware with copper bottoms for a fast heating option. There are too many chemicals and unknowns with the non stick varieties for me.

Going forward I’ve decided that I am not pre-buying kids clothes on sale until it’s closer to their birthday. There were plenty of times where I bought something on sale and guessed what I thought would be my grandchild’s size. When it came time to gift the clothes often I’d find that I guessed wrong and was left with clothes that didn’t fit them and/or clothes for the wrong season. This year I’m going wait to ask the parents what they need and get their correct sizes.

"Being grateful for what I have and knowing when I have enough." Yes!! Minimalism tends to be viewed by many outside as this contest of who can deprive themselves the most, but what you said here is the true heart of minimalism. When I am tempted to keep multiples of things I don't actually use all that often, or especially if food is overlooked and wasted, I think of your husband's story and how very fortunate we are, but how careless and unintentionally greedy we can be as a result (or rather, insecure over the thought of "surviving" without certain items). That video you posted when you visited China put so much into perspective for me and minimalism brings a daily reflection for maintaining that proper balance on our relationship with physical things. I also love your last point about perfectionism. I've slowly been able to let go of this habit but it is a tough one to break! Hilariously, one of the things that helped me with this was playing Breath of the Wild, my first new video game in probably 20 years. Having gone from running away from monsters to slowly trying and failing and realizing it would be okay no matter how I did, I found a great life lesson that you can't get better until you face your fears and slip up from time to time. This has been a vital mindset in my recent career change, and I highly recommend it! Face your fears, set boundaries, and follow your convictions no matter what the naysayers think!!!

"It's more about being grateful for what I have." LOVE THIS! This is where so many people have lost the plot. They forget to be grateful and how blessed they are sometimes. I'm not sure what it is I'm not buying this year! Probably kitchen gadgets, we're having ours remodeled this year and I don't need to pack up anything more than necessary. As far as your shoes--I don't have an issue with holes in anyone's shoes, but I will say that you do need to be careful wearing a pair of tennis shoes for too long. Most athletic shoes are only good for about 500 miles of movement and then the cushions start to break down. Also if the soles aren't wearing evenly due to walking habits. Once that starts, you can end up with back, hip, knee and a bunch of other issues. (My late father-in-law was a chiropractor and we all got the lecture about how important good footwear is!)

Thank you for walking us through what you're not going to buy this year! I loved hearing the reasons behind them. Also, getting glimpses of your vision board pictures was super tantalizing. I'm terribly curious about what the fish represents! Will you be doing another vision board video? Yes, I'd be very interested in what you and your family eat in a day or even week!

YES please for the sushi 🍱 🍣 - I was given a kit for Christmas that’s how much I love it. It would save me so much and then I can indulge more often. Great work on the audio 🤗🎉

I started using Audible recently and it’s life changing! I love to read but I’m a slow reader and often dose or find it hard to concentrate. I don’t know what took me so long to discover the joy of audiobooks!

Coconut oil irritated my eyes too, so now I make my own makeup removing oil. I use a combo of 5% tamanu oil, 20% sweet almond oil, and 75% jojoba oil. I put them in a glass eye dropper and use the steam method with a washcloth. The cost is very low, it’s sustainable, and it works great for my skin! Ps I’d love to know how you fixed the echo!

Yes, please do show how to make sushi! I helped my sister make some with a sushi kit she got for Christmas and it sparked the idea that I could to it also. (We had no idea what we were doing, but it was so much fun and came out well!) Learning along with you would be so much fun!

I do very much like your videos. I grew up in Lviv, Ukraine, so I know very well how cold and tall are the homes in northern Europe.....I used to be cold even in summers. Now I live in Miami with my family(enjoying gorgeous weather and 80F all year round)and do relate to you in many ways. During the winter, we always insulated our windows and it made a HUGE difference..... basically we taped the cracks, leaving only one small section of the upper window so we air out. Also cooking and baking always warmed up our home and our hearts.

After you are done with Audible, I recommend bookbeat. This has a flatrate for 25 or more hours instead of one book per month. If the book you choose is Not as you wanted, you can choose another and you "lost" only the time and Not the 9,95€ for a hole book

Bookbub is another good source…you fill out a style profile and they send you a weekly email (or you can just browse their site), they list books in your preferred genre at a steep discount or free. They link you to whatever seller you prefer to buy from…amazon, indigo books, etc. I’ve used them for free books for almost a decade now, no strings attached, no spam.

The prices at the audio bookseller Chirp are so reasonable I have more than 500! It’s also not a club and has no commitments. I’ve bought books between .99 and $5.95, from five hour books to 27 hours long. Best of all, they don’t pester me. 😊

Audible is amazing! I'm so glad I invested in it. I drive about 80km to work and back every day in traffic and Audible really helps me to take my mind off the traffic AND I get use the time I sit in traffic to be productive.

Thank you for the well thought trough tips, as usual. Regarding the cookware, I would recommend exploring stainless steel pans. The trick is to learn how to heat them properly to get the no stick effect. They last forever and would bring value to any minimalist home.

I would love a what you eat in a day and watching your brother in law teach you how to make sushi! I’m not buying body lotions/sprays(like from bath and body works), kitchen appliances, jar candles to start and I really struggle with craft supplies but I’m determined to use what I have!! Love your videos and the echo never bothered me!
