There's a wicked combo with Zoetic glyph!!! Diamond pickaxe is indestructible so if you cast zoetic onto the pickaxe it keeps the indestructible so you have a 5/4 indestructible! You can pull the combo off on turn 3

Ha I just did this and won 3 games as a direct result and wondered why I hadn't heard anyone talk about this combo yet. The second game my opponent even wasted a spell trying to destroy it after blocking it for more than enough damage, confused af.

I'm glad you called out that it's creatures with above rate stats that's been the driving force behind recent formats being too aggro. It's definitely what we've been seeing and I think it's a key thing to look at as each new set comes out. Historically commons have not had good stats that you can't kill the opponent quickly if they're open. These days you need to build your board early to stop the random stuff putting you too far behind. When doing the set review pay close attention to the stats of low mana commons and uncommons to figure out how big a factor it will be.
@jshtng78
@jshtng78 6 месяцев назад
Most of the people who say they wish games were longer and grindier also want both sides to have massive boards and have battles be like armies clashing instead of it mostly being an empty board with a hail of non-creature spells being exchanged or something like a control mirror where any creature spell that etbs almost immediately disappears due to spell effects.

I feel like a lot of people got a lot of cards wrong on release, especially Etali’s favor and Miner’s Guidewing.
@kaiseremotion854
@kaiseremotion854 6 месяцев назад
etalis favour makes alot of sense tbh, normally auras are really bad, but this format doesn't really have staple removal other than abrade because 1 for 1 removal is so much weaker in this format
@TauntedSymbol
@TauntedSymbol 6 месяцев назад
The way I see etalis favour is basically a reverse "role creature" from eldraine. You get a monster role upfront, then you get a random spell from the top. If you get a 2/3 mana creature it's really solid, but if you get a 1 mana spell or a card you don't want to cast (and add it to your hand) is not very good. Personally I think it's really inconsistent and I try not to play for the most part, but it's far from being terrible like it looks at first reading

Oaken Siren DOES do graveyard stuff, because of how Craft works. Can come down, swing in for a few, tap for a few mana, chump block, then get crafted. I thought this card had potential and, having been on the receiving end of its versatility, that was correct!

a lot of these calls were very obvious to some of us who actually play the colours and styles that came up in this video . nizza's apparent need to keep his opinionation on-the-edge is always a dint to the quality of his calls and ability to understand the entirety of the state of the game before his hammer comes down .

Problem with the backside of Lodestone Needle is paying 4 mana for the first explore - makes the card more of a slow-drip mana sink than a game changer, whereas the flip side of other artifacts can straight-up close a game. But the front side is awesome and the cost is cheap so it's a great card that's been a winning piece in some of my first place paper drafts.
@BrvtusVG
@BrvtusVG 6 месяцев назад
Blue white is suuuuch a sleeper colour combo this format, it's not surprising you underrated so many of their cardds because a lot of the individual cards don't seem very powerful on their own. But the synergy of slowing the game down with the tap/stun artifacts and then winning on overwhelming late game value feels awesome. Really fun take on a control archetype where you're adding to the board the whole game and then turning your defensive permanents into wincons.
@FishyFishy_
@FishyFishy_ 6 месяцев назад
Funnily enough the deck can often even overwhelm in the early game too. You're almost guaranteed to win late, but if you draw a good glyph or your 1 drop flyers, it can be absolutely unstoppable early as well It's just so so strong

@@FishyFishy_ yes totally! A good UW draft feels legit busted. A powerful aggressive start into late game value powerhouse if they manage to survive.

Dowsing device is still the sleeper of the set, it makes a lot of already high value Jeskai cards even better. Waterwind scout, Cartographer's Companion, Plundering Pirate, Tinker' tote, both 2/2 boros tappers all become hasters, or can give an evasive creature more power as well. Flipping into more mana and just pump my flier for at least +3 if not +6 or more for a 2 turn clock? Yes please. Add a couple of way-laying pirates to that and you have a super solid win by turn 5-6 aggro pile.
@Jack-uh2db
@Jack-uh2db 6 месяцев назад
dowsing is awesome but definitely an awkward aggro card because, as a 2 mana card that doesn’t impact the board, it can be a bit difficult to play it at the right time in a damage race
@Necroskull388
@Necroskull388 6 месяцев назад
I think that if I were to sum up how this format feels different from normal, it would be such: “the 5-6-7 mana phase of the game is just as tempo-oriented as the 2-3-4 mana phase of the game, just scaled up - you can’t get away with being durdly in the late game as easily as you normally can, there WILL be big creatures swinging.”

My best luck has also come from black white... but thinking back to it it wasn't for the sac outlets. Adaptive gemguard (?? Tap 2 art/creature for +1+1) and Guildwing had often become my finishers instead. Tinkers tote beasically becomes a new counter each turn, and the more you have the larger the guard gets. Anedoctal though. I thought i drafted sac, instead i drafted tap down for bonus

I feel like there is one scenario where you play the acolyte: if you need types for the Throne of the Dead God. Literally my last 3 drafts all had the Throne in them, with only the last one being any good (7-2 in fact), and I think I had the acolyte in every one of the decks just because I needed the type. All that to say... yeah, don't play him anywhere else. The frequent threat of combat tricks and evasiveness really make this guy's defensiveness almost nonexistent. Funnily enough, I had one match where a guy comboed that 4/3 guy that spits iut Fungus tokens and him and drained me every single turn, but... I think what moreso won them that game was how wide they went and not really that combo (though it did take like half my life total away from me).

Master´s Guide-Mural is a really interesting card I think. Played against a deck with 2 of those, and in the later stages my opponent was able to put 2 4/4s at the table for 0 mana every turn. Like how do you win agianst that? But if the game is faster, this card might be a reason you lose....

Acolyte is another one I think was designed for commander; WB aristocrats love a good sac outlet, and the life drain/gain is right up there with blood artist. Definitely a great include for the commander persons in the right deck.

First, love your sox hats and I hope to run into you in Greater Boston! Second, I feel like the Meta has shifted a lot in this set. People thought it was fast and then it shifted to midrange, and there are a lot of viable decks. So the commons probably got a boost from just being good.

That moment when you go 7-1 in a deck with 4 Didact Echoes XD. There were quite a few games where my opponents lost because the echoes suddenly gained flying while on the battlefield and the opponent didn't realize their attacks would enable that. Got to also make them into Thought Monitor with Wandering Throne on the field. True they aren't great. They just worked well for my midrange merfolk deck.

Same here, I drafted a couple of what I thought were fairly solid decks but have yet to break 3 wins on anything but, of all things, a relatively janky Rakdos midrange pile that I think I just got lucky with my matches on. I thought I had a great Dinos pile the other day, pulling multiple premiere removal spells (2 Abrade, 2 Huatli's Final Strike) alongside two of the signpost uncommon dino (which is REALLY good) but it unfortunately ended up 2-3.

People are sleeping on the Aristocrats deck in this. Acolyte is the worst of the sac outlets but the deck is really powerful if you have 3 outlets and at least two cards that make tokens. It's not the strongest deck in the format but the removal in BW colors picks up the slack against the stronger archetypes

Something players will also largely miss on Discover is the power of curating your draw. It's very realistic Discover shoves a land pocket to the bottom of your deck, and even if that's only 2-3 lands over a game, you had the mana to play discover cards, so you have a decent level of mana, odds are you are happy to see all of them shoved well out the way and get the gas density in the rest of your deck higher

I don't really understand why you keep describing the format as "not a fast one" when some of the best performing cards on 17lands are 1-drops (and a 3-mana 5/4 haste!), and according to the data the set has one of the lowest number of turns played and one of the highest on-the-play win rates. (You don't want to be clustering near ONE on that "Format Speed" plot...) The aggro decks are blindingly fast and powerful in this format, and it's faster than most other Arena formats if only because of continued power creep.
@NizzahonMagic
@NizzahonMagic 6 месяцев назад
Well, I don't want to mislead people on what "fast " means. In many formats fast means you don't have the ability to play a wide array of deck types. In this format, you definitely do. The non-aggro decks have enough tools.
@nobodyshome6792
@nobodyshome6792 6 месяцев назад
@@NizzahonMagic format speed should only ever involve average turn count, not diversity of deck types. Turns played = speed. Diversity of archetypes is variance, not speed of the format.
@kylewarne1265
@kylewarne1265 6 месяцев назад
@@nobodyshome6792 Sure, But the fact the midrange and control decks work though is why this format feels slower than a lot of recent formats where aggro decks were the only thing that worked. I've had more games get into stalled board states and go 10+ turns than I have in any format in a while because the non aggro decks can answer aggro threats and get into that midgame. Blue/White is one of the best decks in the format and it's winning on turn 6, 7, or 8. There are very powerful one drops, but often because they get the ball rolling on your long-term value generation, not because they're giving you turn 4 kills like the crackhead aggro in ONE for example. When aggro works out it kills you immediatly and keeps the average turn count low, but enough games run long that I think the data is failing to capture something.

@theopreston8507

it's pretty objective data though, right? like if people are largely losing with a card, it follows that you largely shouldn't play that card-- if anything, the fact that you 7-0'd with the skulltaker twice probably speaks more to your own skill than the relative power level of the card.

@@theopreston8507 Not necessarily? Data is objective but that leads a lot of people to fall into the trap of "my conclusion is based on data, so it must be correct." When in fact there are many conflicting ways to interpret a set of data and most of them are probably incorrect to some extent. If a card has a low winrate on 17lands, that doesn't necessarily mean you shouldn't play the card or that the card will always decrease your winrate if you run it over a card with a higher winrate on 17lands. A non-exhaustive list of other possible conclusions could be: - The majority of players do not understand how to play the card very well. - The current metagame features decks that tend to match up well against the card - The card is only good in certain types of decks that rarely come together, and the majority of decks in which the card is included are decks in which the card doesn't really get a chance to shine, bringing the overall winrate down.
