Hey thank you so much. I am a surgery nurse. I work with doctors who do this. I am going to all him if talks to his patients about all these things. I didn't know you wasn't suppose to still feel hungry after. I knew many have to come back due to acid reflux and have the bypass, which is a bigger surgery than the sleeve. I myself am over weight but on a weight loss diet. I am just watching my calories, not carbs. I have lost 25 pounds in 6 weeks. After seeing what others go through with surgery, nope, not for me. I hope you the best!!!!!

I firmly believe that WLS is the only alternative for some excessively obese people. WLS is clearly a life changing event, but comes with a pretty steep price. I want to be able to get down to a more healthy size without the side effects of WLS. For me, it’s just not worth the trade off so I’ve just decided to go the old fashion route - reduction in calorie intake and increase in physically activity.

I appreciate the you put into making this, but this is not always the case for VSG. I am 18 months post op and haven't experienced most of these with the exception of body dysmorphia and hunger (your brain and pancreas also produce Ghrelin so I too hate it when doctors/people say you won't feel hunger 🙄) My GERD was reversed and I no longer require a PPI (which I had already been on for almost 5 years before surgery. I drink normally like before. I focus on whole foods and not replacement foods (pizza, breads etc...I just eat the pizza if I want the pizza). I am also a clinically diagnosed binge eater so maybe I approached this differently. I still work with a therapist and nutritionist that both specialize in ED'S. I'm so happy your GERD symptoms have let up...that is a beast (I used an herbal supplement called marshmallow root to heal the stomach mucosa after I "detoxed" my body from the PPI'S). Wishing you continued success in your journey ☺️

I personally feel that people are just focused on losing the weight and the doctors are focused on convincing you that this is the best option for you and let's face it they want to get paid too, That just the way I feel. Yes, gastric bypass has saved thousands of lives, and that's great, but that's not the whole story. So thank @Jessemsimons for your honesty. 👍

The BDD is so weird. I almost feel like I had reverse body dysmorphia when I was 300+ lbs because I had NO idea just how massive I had gotten. I would see candid photos of me and not recognize myself, but I'd look in the mirror and think "meh, same shxt different day." I've lost 120 lbs. When I look in the mirror now, I see the same unrecognizable blob of flesh from 3 years ago. I feel absolutely massive and more self conscious than ever, even though I've gone from a size 24 to 14. ALL I see is my jiggling flab with every breath and I feel paranoid that people in public are gawking at my size, even though I know it's ridiculous. I know my happiness does not lie inside any number on the scale. But I feel now that I'm deflated and flabby, my boobs drove off into the horizon, I have bingo wings the size of dinner plates and my butt looks like 2 half filled water balloons... the number is all I have left 😩🥺

First off, thanks for sharing your story. I understand some of those feels. I'm almost three years in and when I see photos I can't recognize myself. Wow- I thought I was the only one who felt this way. I’m currently on my own weight loss journey after 10 plus years of not taking good care of myself. Both the scale and the fact that I’m having to buy progressively smaller clothes tells me I’m making good progress. That being said, I’m more aware than ever of how my fatness is making me feel uncomfortable. Thankfully, it’s not to the level of me feeling like throwing in the towel. The increase in my energy levels keeps me in the straight and narrow. I will say this to the viewing audience out there. Take the time to give positive feedback to someone you notice has lost weight and has clearly been working at it. That goes a long way in boosting their confidence and just making their day in general. I do this anytime I get the chance.

Hi Jesse. You have made an excellent video! I had a different gastric bypass surgery than you (Roux-en-Y) but my experiences are similar to yours especially the way people treat you. Many people treat fat people poorly. Sad but true. Attractive normal weight people are treated much better. I wanted to tell you that like you I also still felt I looked fat in the mirror even after I had lost 100% of my excess body weight. I think that’s because you still sort of have the same body shape even though it’s much much smaller. That feeling went away completely when I had skin reduction surgery. I think you said you were saving money for a skin reduction and I encourage you follow through with that. I don’t mean to be graphic but if you get rashes underneath your excess skin folds your plastic surgeon may be able to convince your insurance to cover it. Good luck with your journey going forward as a healthy normal weight person!

Hi Jesse. I'm 6 months post-op, full gastric bypass, down 102 pounds. Only 35 pounds to go. I feel bad about the things you went through but I did not experience most of the things you described. I feel your video may dissuade people from getting the surgery that they desperately need. My experiences have been way more positive. Best thing I've ever done with hardly any inconvenience to my life. I know you're over 3 years post-op so my advice may be moot for you but who knows. Maybe my experiences can help you or someone having second thoughts about the surgery after watching your video. 1. Thirsty: I only experienced the water restriction you described for the first two months after surgery. But like you said, I hardly felt like eating or drinking fluids right after surgery so it wasn't an issue for me. Maybe once, about three months ago, I drank about 5 big gulps of water and it hurt for a few seconds. But it was a good reminder to slow down the gulps and volume of water and then that was it. It lasted for a few seconds that one time about three months ago and I pretty much forgot about that feeling until I just watched your video. I must've subconsciously taught myself to slow down my swallowing because it's a non-issue to me. Your advice to always carry around water for the first few weeks is good advice. But now, water intake is just a normal thing for me. Something I don't have to think about. 2. Body Dysmorphia: Can't relate. I don't doubt it's a real condition and I definitely don't doubt you have it. I just had to google it because I don't know the first thing about it. I don't think it's related to the surgery you had. I think you may have had it before surgery and you still have it now. Hopefully not, as I know the video is almost 3 years old. Maybe it's a predominantly female thing? I really don't know. I can't relate to it other than I may have the opposite of body dysmorphia. I see changes in my body and I am excited. I can't wait to see the next change. I hope you're still not focussing on the negative effects of the surgery, which are hardly negative. Yes, you have a pound of loose skin on each arm but that's way better than having 10 pounds of fat on each arm filling out the loose skin. Again, I've never talked to a single person who is post-op that even mentioned it. Let alone the detailed way it affects you. No one at the bariatric clinic even mentioned it. Yes, body dysmorphia is a real thing but I seriously doubt it's related to the surgery. 3. Less food same price: Can't relate. Maybe my advice will help you and maybe prevent people watching your video who are second guessing. Vitamins: Yes, they recommend taking a multivitamin every day for the rest of your life. And I would follow that advice for the first few weeks until your diet is unrestricted again i.e. 6 weeks post-op. It's important for us post-op patients, at first, but the latest research is showing synthetic vitamins have negligible benefits and only create expensive golden coloured urine. I haven't taken them for 4 months and I feel great. Protein drinks: Yes, if you're not getting enough from your diet then it's a good idea. I had one protein drink after surgery and that's it. Not a single protein drink in over 5 months and I feel great. But again, I get plenty of protein in my diet so the drinks are a non-issue for me. Expensive food? No. Can't relate. I eat regular food and have been eating regular food since week 6. I don't buy all those foods you mentioned and most post-op people I have talked to don't either. Save your money. Calcium supplements: You didn't mention it but maybe sleeve patients don't get that advice. GBP patients get that advice but I don't take them. If it's a female issue as I think calcium is more important for females then by all means but as far as surgery related, not for me and I feel great. 4. Acid Reflux: Not GBP surgery related. It's possible but definitely not with me and no one I've talked to has worse reflux than preop. The surgery practically eliminated my acid reflux. I used to feel it almost every day preop. Now I felt it once about three months ago but that was my fault. I was trying new foods and experimenting with what I can eat and can't it. It's actually kind of fun. 5. Different body: Can't relate in the negative way that you described. I'm not hiding things. I'm having fun shopping for new clothes and wearing more designer clothes and maybe even a couple form-fitting shirts. But I'm waiting until I reach my goal to buy a whole new wardrobe. I hope you got past that and are seeing the positive effects of the surgery. It sounds like your journey has been successful. Physically anyways. There is a cure for loose skin and it involves plastic surgery. If the choice is 150 pounds of fat or 15 pounds of loose skin, I'll take the latter and be very happy with it. 6. Feeling Hungry: Can't relate. If you're snacking in between meals like they suggest, it shouldn't be an issue. I have pepperettes throughout the day and I rarely get hungry. In fact, they suggested I eat more snacks so I don't lose too much weight too fast lol. I know it might be more of a sleeve side-effect but for me and any GBP patients I've talked to, not an issue. 7. Carrying yourself: Can't relate. My posture is only improving and the aches and pains I used to have all but gone. I don't doubt you're having new pains trying to accommodate your new body but I had not heard that before until I watched your video. 8. Smaller: Yes, and it's awesome. If you have to resize your wedding ring or buy new shoes because of the weight loss, ENJOY IT!!! Seriously, it's not a negative. 9. Food on your mind: NO. It's not. If anything, I sometimes forget about food now that I'm more active and more preoccupied with activities than thinking about my next meal while I'm eating the current one. I have a feeling that might be a YOU issue. Please take this advice Jesse. You don't have to worry so much about the amount of water intake you're getting or protein you're getting or carbs, calories, low fat, etc... Just eat regular food and a reasonable amount. Drink water or other fluids as your body wants you to. That's it. Yes, it's important to follow their rules for a couple months after surgery but eventually you have to go back to normal. I don't think you're letting yourself do that. I hope that is something you have conquered since you made the video. I hope your video doesn't give people second thoughts about weight loss surgery. 10. This is not easy: You're right. If they haven't had the surgery, they don't know what they're talking about. Gall bladder? This is the first time I've ever heard of that. Maybe it's different for sleeve patients but I have never heard that one until I saw your video. Yes, stalls happen and they're normal. My longest stall was 5 days but then weight loss kicked in hard and it caught up easily. Stalls are a little annoying at the time but not in the bigger picture. I get the feeling a lot of the problems you experienced are self-inflicted. I was really surprised at some of the things you have experienced and so many of them are negative when they don't have to be. I seriously hope you have worked through a lot of these things and that you haven't scared people off of weight loss surgery. Best thing I've ever done and once you get past your issues, you may feel the same way and I hope you encourage people to take the step regardless of your own experiences. You might not be the ideal role-model to talk to about weight loss surgery. I wish you lots of luck and success.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm sorry you think this was a video to discourage people from having the surgery but it isn't. It's a video to inform issues one may face post op from my personal experience. I have always said (even in this video) that having the surgery was the best thing I've done even with these issues I have had. You also had bypass not sleeve surgery which can also effect the outcome. I think my post-op experience is just as valid as anyone else's. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

Thank you, this was very informative. I am currently on a wait list for weight loss surgery. I want gastric bypass and whilst my surgeon hasn't said no, he wants me to be open minded to the sleeve. The specialist dietician told me it's to do with my mental health medication and if in the future I would have to go back on one that I weaned off last November. If I was still on that one it would be a no right away to the bypass. As I carry most of my weight round the middle, the surgeon said the less they have to do once they've navigated through the fat (which he added is distributed differently in people) the better and obviously the sleeve is a more simple procedure. I still would prefer the bypass!
@smoothdancer6
@smoothdancer6 Год назад
I am 6 months postop full gastric bypass. My surgeon explained it very simply to me and it makes sense. She always goes in ready to perform the full bypass but if complication arise mid-surgery, then she will opt for the sleeve option. It's really a win/win situation. If you get the full bypass, great. If you wake up and the surgeon says you got the sleeve, great. I agree the full bypass is more beneficial but studies have shown up to 5 years post-op no significant difference as far as weight loss comparing the two surgeries.
@zoew1602
@zoew1602 Год назад
@@smoothdancer6 thank you for the information! I hope you are doing well now you are six months postop full gastric bypass and are losing weight. My surgeon has decided gastric sleeve is better for me due to me carrying the majority of my excess weight at my front top half so the less they have to do the better. I am happy with that decision. I'm just very keen at this point to have it done and dusted, but I have sleep apnoea which requires CPAP treatment first. Due to a shortage of CPAP machines following COVID the wait lists in the UK are huge and only for urgent cases. Luckily they class me as urgent as my apnoea is severe and because I need treatment before surgery. They estimate a wait time of approximately 2 more months for that then I will be getting closer to surgery following that. Wishing you all the best!
@smoothdancer6
@smoothdancer6 Год назад
@@zoew1602 Yes, they diagnosed me with that as well. I used the CPAP for a week then sent it back. I don't know if it's different in the UK but here in Canada, I simply refused to use the CPAP and they did the surgery anyway. I wouldn't get too worried about sleep apnea. They make it sound a lot worse than it really is.
@zoew1602
@zoew1602 Год назад
@@smoothdancer6 unfortunately because the anaesthetists make a huge deal about sleep apnoea and putting you under they insist on CPAP treatment first. Mine was causing significant daytime somnolence, I just couldn't stay awake in the daytime. Thanks for your honesty. This is what I’ve never understood about getting WLS, because it does take as much self-discipline and hard work as eating a healthy diet consistently. So I’m sincerely wondering what’s the advantage? Just that if you fall off the bandwagon you have a negative physical reaction (ie. throwing up or stomach pains)? And if you fall off the wagon on a regular diet or lifestyle change there’s no immediate negative consequences to get you back on track quickly? Just trying to understand why somebody would choose WLS over eating a healthy diet.
@JesseMSimons

I think alot of it is the habits it’s forces you to create in the beginning so that when your body can physically handle more you already have a good foundation and good habits set up. The vitamins, the nutrition the thing you have to follow.. It just doesn't make any sense to me. I'm so torn I have an appointment for this operation in one month but I really don't know if I want to do it now. I mean if I just follow what what Mass general weight loss center tells me to do with my nutritionist in the process I had to get to this point to even get the operation. THEN I WOULD HAVE NO PROBLEMS.. I would be skinny.. The water thing is a real big thing for me.. I guzzle tons of water I love water.. I don't know what to do about any of this.

You will lose some hair! Not because of not eating enough protein but just because of the surgery! I lost half my hair even though I ate more protein than the minimal requirement! It did slow down and stop and now at one year past surgery I do have some regrowth but it was initially scary!! In some rarer cases some people develop hypoglycemia where your blood sugar gets very low very quickly, the first time it happened I was on a long road trip driving home and thankfully I was at a rest stop and it was the scariest health event I’ve experienced to date.. I now have to eat more frequently and specific foods to maintain my blood sugar.. Not everyone will lose 100plus pounds! I was 56 at surgery, 255 pounds and one year out of surgery I’m at 225 pounds, I exercise 5 days a week for one hour, track all food intake and track blood sugar levels… So surgery has different effects on different people and at different ages.. I also have fibromyalgia and spine issues that cause chronic constant pain.. Surgery and weight loss does not take the pain away! Losing some weight can help but it will not take away pain caused by other conditions… Mental health needs to be treated just as much as the weight loss… For me it has been the disappointment of not losing the 100 plus pounds I thought I was going to lose…☹️

When did you have the surgery. The thirst gets better, I found drinking lukewarm water helped a lot.

I researched for a year before hand (for surgeons all through the eastern u.s.) It was actually the closest one too me. DR. Fritz Jean-Pier. He is an amazing surgeon and the support team. OMG they prepared me like completely. I think the only thing I was surprised for was the water. They told me about chugging but big multiple sips. ( that is impossible ) even now three months out I can only sip it. I still regularly see the Phsycologist, the neutritionist, the i guess physical and other doctors. we also have in group support meetings. They pretty much covered it all.

Sounds great. I feel like where I'm having it done, there's not nearly that level of information or support. You're lucky.

I don’t. I stopped making the weight loss videos because people didn’t seem to be watching them but I definitely need to do a few here and there I guess. 😊

It’s been 6 weeks since my surgery I hate I can’t drink water like I want too . I’m not able to eat at all I try to stay hydrated but it’s hard acid reflex is the worst an I’m always tired an feel weak an sleep a lot cause I don’t have any energy so far I lost 30 pounds I started at 248 now I’m 218 but I can’t wait to start working out but now I just can’t do it because I don’t even have a desire to eat or barley drink do anyone have the same feeling after surgery ?

This was me for the first 4 months. After 6 months I remember it getting a lot better and then at a year again you kind of step up again. It takes your body a long time to heal. Make sure your taking your meds for the reflux and if it’s not working tell your doctor. Keep taking your vitamins and just take that sip every 5-10 mins. Getting it in slowly still counts as getting it in. Sending hugs and good vibes your way. You are definitely not alone in this feeling. ❤️

You better drink protein then. Hydrate with that. Your bodies needs it. Please call your doctors office.
