Yeah but the oscars hand out multiple awards to people in one country, (except for the foreign film category) and any material in one year is judged, Eurovision is a continental contest decided by its country's citizens, not judges and it has contest format, only one song per country

I'm from Indonesia and I have lots of friends from Europe and Australia because of Eurovision. I love how diverse and welcoming Eurovision is, it brings people together through music and I'm not really much of a music fan but Eurovision is what got me hooked up to music, that's when I met alot of people who're interested too. I just wished people here would be a little bit more open minded than just say "If it's not famous, it doesn't matter", that's what I'm annoyed by, people claiming Eurovision doesn't matter or is irrelevant just because they've never heard of it

If you take the ESC seriously than it's bad to you. Believe it or not the subconscious works. Over the years I listened music and I have seen more contests. Eurovision...it is the first year when I watch it and I have seen more than in other 1000:)))). Joking...ok, so this contest it is not something special, it is not much different of other song contests. Maybe some of them are better in quality that this one. What can I say about this one it is that his characteristic it's popularity. A lot of people from different countries -so can I say large masses of people-come and watch it. Ok, there are good songs in this contest (good for the level of a contest), but most of them are more popular. I can see that many competitors prepared with complexes graphics or stagings, shows, pyro etc etc and sometimes forget what is the most important: song and voice. You see also some shocking and kitschy things, like "women with the beard" and others. Ok, I don't say he sang good, was a performance of top 10, but if he would be dressed in smoking with tie, he wouldn't take the trophy (not so many would vote for him). So it was a marketing thing, unfortunately. As a personal opinion...if some or many people want something else...in this world exist another contests, it exists radio, opera, concerts with live orchestra, shows in different locations, on stadiums etc. Nobody force no one to watch Eurovision. There is also music outside this contest and it's deserve to be discovered.

They weren´t. That is lie. Their performer was banned from entry as a private person as she previously broke one of Ukrainian bans on travel, she had 3 year ban from entering (like if you are from outside UK and overstay your visa in UK for instance, you get ban from entry for certain amount of time). Russians were advised to either do their performance from remote area (outside Ukraine) or choose different act with plenty of time given, but they decided to try and stretch their muscles at Ukraine (very rude) and Ukraine just said they will not change their law for Russia. I can not imagine Russia would allow anybody without valid visa into their land, so no idea what they played at. The occupation of Ukraine by Russia which is still going on and did at the time of course doesn´t make this all any better. You might question some of the political references in couple of Ukrainian songs, however I think 1944 is a historical/personal song not a political one myself and did not get the reference in Verka´s song at all before or now.

I am honestly sick and tired of the "ESC is gay" myth / stereotype! OK - many male fans are gay, but there is a lot of STRAIGHT male fans too. And lots of female fans! EBU / the fan community should really try to work aginst those silly stereotypes. They just do no good I didn't like performances like Austria 14 / ireland 18, which only added fuel to the same silly stereotypes

@@steinarmogen3166 I think it's all about people's own views. I never even payed attention that the 2018 Ireland dancers were suposed to symbolise "gay couple" . Never even turned my attention to it untill the media started their antigay propaganda. I think a lot of the hate comes from the narrow minded journalists who make those articles and then feed it to the super stereotypical people, who instantly get lit up.

Eurovision brought me a lot of positive things in my life, literally Eurovision change my life and my views on the world. Thanks to Eurovision i've started to learn foreign languages, i discover many talented musicans from all around Europe (+ Australia), my passion for traveling and learning about the tradition, culture etc of a specific country is growing each day and people still thinks that Eurovision is a bad contest who doesn't have any value. I have only positive words to say about Eurovision. I hope my desire to watch Eurovision in life will be fulfied one day! Matt, i can totally agree with everything you said in your video. Many people watch only what is offered on TV, they aren't die hard fans like you and me, so for me their comments are understandable, but never tolerable. They should understand that Eurovision isn't only 3 hours of show, Eurovision is more than that!! All in all, i'll be watching Eurovision no matter what other people thinks about it!! :)

Pugsley A. Nah, they're two out of 63. That's 3.17% It's quite clear they are the exception that confirms the rule. But many singers have launched successful local national careers after participating in eurovision. In Sweden that is the norm rather than the exception. If you want people to notice you, you have to participate in Melodifestivalen, doesn't matter if you win or lose. If you win mello and get to represent Sweden, you have a quite promising career in front of you. The beautiful thing with eurovision is that we get to see these local talents that we otherwise never would have heard of. Of course, failures in the esc has also wrecked many careers...

I agree with you and I am not gonna complain for anything, just to say that some songs that won the ESC didn't have such a big message, while others deserved it more for the message. Btw, this goes even for the underrated songs. They should put first the message of the song and then the others (type of the song and music, performance and appearance, and the country, because sometimes the juries and even the public sometimes ignore the message, instead of hearing the song and researching the message of it, and criticize for the type of the music and all those things that come second). Btw, I think we should feel ESC more like a big party or a concert that a Song Contest, instead of complaining about things that we don't like

One thing I hear from the older folks is : 'The contest isn't the same anymore!' Meaning that it was only on one night a year and no one knew the songs beforehand. 'It's not live anymore, it's like karaoke' I do miss the live orchestra and instruments on stage. 'Everyone sings in English these days' These songs will never get radio play or chart. The winners never have 'careers' afterwards. I could go on, but one thing I'd like to say as a Eurovision fan is that it is a fantastic hobby that takes me to wonderful places and wonderful people. I've been to 5 Eurovisions and many Danish and Swedish finals. So much fun and worth the overtime hours at work! Oh another thing you don't say to ESC fans:' It's campy' So was Sonny and Cher!

Michel Sennett When everyone sang in their own language UK and Ireland had a huge unfair advantage. That's why we had 4 Ireland wins in 5 years. The nostalgic winner in 1994 "rocknroll kids" about being 16 years old in 1962 would never have won if it was in a different language. They just appealed to the age group of the juries with a sentimental text and an average melody. Both Poland and Germany were more worthy winners that year. Also, most sang in english between 1973 to 1976 as well, when there also was no language rule. ABBA won with Waterloo in english in 1974. And many songs have done well lately without being in english anyway. Winners of 2017 and 2007 for example.
@michelsennett5375
@michelsennett5375 6 лет назад
First, I like your moniker! Second, I appreciate your knowledge. Yes, it is very difficult for Ireland and the UK to win today. I do appreciate songs in their native mother tongues. When some of these artists try English, it's not so good, and many things get lost on the translation so the lyrics can match the original melody. I also don't care for the chorus in English so people can understand. Like your examples, 2017 and 2007 winners were performed in their native tongues and folks loved them. I wonder if ABBA could have won if Waterloo was performed in Swedish? They have won twice in Swedish. Thanks for your comments!

As an American I can proudly say that Eurovision is known simply because of Verka and Lasha Tumbaii. That song is so popular at camp. I remember a kid dancing to it for one of the evening programs.

What I hear the most is: "Eurovision is not about music and the songs, only about the show and the act"
@th5841
@th5841 3 года назад
That is partly right imo. You often hear people say " We will be able to predict the results more precisly when we have seen the rehersals". So how the staging is, has significanse. The whole package, song plus staging, matters.
@sannev8407
@sannev8407 3 года назад
@@th5841 That's true the staging has significance of course but I think what those people meant to say having a good song doesn't matter as long as you have a good act, and that's partly right because that's the reason they reintroduced Juries
@th5841
@th5841 3 года назад
@@sannev8407 We do agree 😊 I tried to start a discussion on a Discord server about ESC, but I only got 3 responces. And this is a place for music lovers. 1. I don't know about it (American) 2. I have never followed it (Brit) 3. ESC is all about performance and nothing about the songs (don't know his/her nationallity) 😪 So I gave up...
@sannev8407
@sannev8407 3 года назад
@@th5841 That's a shame :( I don't think it's only about performance but rather a mixture of performance/singer/song. Look at Arcade that's not a bad song. I think that was a nice idea tho, you deserved more responses
@th5841
@th5841 3 года назад
@@sannev8407 The song should absolutely decide the most. Arcade is a song that stands on its own legs. The same with I Feed You My Love which I first heard on the radio, thinking Wow, what a tune! Then they told it was the Norwegian MGP winner and I almost drove off the road in excitement. And none of the two tunes had excessive performances in ESC. But in the other end some hate a song because they don't like the staging. The song may be nice but the staging ruins it. Like Fallen Angel. Then I think "Seriously?"

This is the perfect video about what I feel about this! And also: It's a Music-Festival... Not a Political-festival...I can say like this: I am a straight (As much as I experienced anyway.. I might be Pan, Bisexual or maybe also Polyamorous what I might know... Doesn't matter...Moving on) white male. I looking at ESC (Eurovision Song Contest for you that don't know the short for it) just for the music.. Because I listen to EVERYTHING... Sure some I don't like and some I don't... And No I don't always cheer for my own country.. Most of the time these last couple of years (2016 - 2018) I didn't like our song that was sent there at all (Sweden). But I still watch.. Why? Well for the MUSIC!! This year I loved so many... Denmarks "Higher Ground", Netherlands "Outlaw In 'Em" or even the winner "Toy".... My favorite year was 2006... And you ESC-Haters.. 2006.... Try to say that it's to much pop and sound-alike songs and listen to the winner of 2006! Lordi from Finland!! Yeah... Pure great Rock!! We in the community for ESC knows that we aren't always gonna like the same songs..And here is the REAL kicker that I feel is VERY IMPORTANT: Even if the country/countries I like and vote for doesn't win..IT.. DOESN'T..MATTER!... Like.. Real talk here... If I hear a great song... A song that goes right into my heart... Do you think that if that song are in a contest and it doesn't win that it just become worthless to me? No! It doesn't! I still are gonna love that song... I still are gonna play it even after the contest is over.. I will still enjoy the song... Sure sometimes I have looked at the result and cursed at Europe that they don't have that good taste since sometimes songs I don't even remember wins (For me, if I can't get a melody of a song into my head it's not a winning song for me.. Didn't like 2016 or 2017's winners)..But It doesn't matter in the end....My personal winner-songs and favorite songs still exist and I have the great opportunity to listen to them how often I like.. I loved "Yodel It" - Romania 2017 thousand times more then the winner of 2017... There are so much more I could tell you about why ESC is one of the best things ever in the world but as you say ESCunited... It's subjective with music... Everyone have their own taste!

Thank you too my friend! You nailed it yourself since I always heard nearly all of those arguments and I get annoyed with it so much because the hate that they pour out is just... So bad.. ESC is a community where we most of the time share love for the songs we like and the shows, the voices and the clothes we adore on stage.. Sure we sometimes share hate with songs we dislike... But the main focus is about the songs we like/love

Some songs may not good but not suck. And the neighbor voting exists but if the song is good, everyone will vote it. Top 5 plus Host system isn't good. It should automatically qualify top 3 from Televoting and top 3 from Jury voting instead. PS. I am a fan.

In some cases it is, and it is very much affected by whatever is popular in the media at the specific time. 2018 (metoo), 2016 (anti-russia), 2014 (LGBT). It was not so bad a decade ago, but with the rise of social media, it has become more and more focused on the topic behind a song, rather than the song itself.

I'm Greek and though the Greek votes to Cyprus sometimes are really weird we need to consider that Cypriot artists are well known in greece and they have a fan base here and they promote their eurovision songs in greece a lot. Same goes the other way too. And I imagine that this happens between artists in other blocks like the ex-ussr, the Balkans etc. It's not just politics. It's international markets.

I will come with a statement that you did not use and which is valid for me. The show is too much of a circus now. In the good old days when you had an orchestra- and every nation sang in their national tongue. The audience sat silently with their Sunday clothes on, and with the few countries that participated there was excitement when they gave the scores from 1-12 points. Then the focus more at the song itself and now it is all over the place. I could go on and on. I follow the show as a tradition since I watched it since 1985.

if they believe that every country votes for their neighbours and that Europe hates Turkey, how do they explain 2003? Or 2010(2nd place), 2004(4th), 2007(4th), 2009(4th), 2012(7th)? I don't include 2008 when Turkey was robed as obviously should be the winner. But still got 7th. Turkey has done great in ESC and it can not be all because of diaspora votes.
