My ex husband left me with debt. I took a second job for 4 1/2 years. I paid off all the debts plus my student loan. And I paid extra toward toward the mortgage every month. I have been on a strict budget the entire time. The job was to pay off bills, not to spend money on more stuff. And I am quitting the second job this month. I have never felt better.

My dad taught all his 10 girls this " Don't look at what others have because you don't know how they acquire it and they probably not able to sleep in their bed at night because debt keeps them away or they working long hours to pay for stuff". I follow that advice to this day. He's gone 40 years but his wisdom lives with us. He was a successful businessman man who was blind.

I think this advice is more or less to help people who struggle with the urge to "keep up with the Jones" and end up struggling financially because of it, and not necessarily to judge or wag your finger at people for going into debt to make their purchases. That feeling to keep up appearances is hard to shake esp now days with social media so if you can remind yourself that some people with nice looking stuff could also be a paycheck away from losing it all maybe that would scare you enough into being more financially responsible. Assumptions do generally make people look foolish however and not everyone who has nice stuff is in debt. But a lot of is are 🤑

One of the biggest things that brings joy to my heart is the phrase "I remember the day I prayed for what I have today." It completely changed the way I look at everything. And you can apply that to other people as well if you find yourself maybe a little envious. Remind yourself that there was a day that they prayed for what you are envious of, and it shifts into happiness for them.

Hi from the UK 🇬🇧. I got out of debt many years ago. It took me many years to build my finances slow and steady is the way for me. I stopped wanting what other people have. I learned to praise other people's achievements and feel blessed for what I have.

Well done. I'm battling with patience myself. How to you overcome that. I'm 29 and paying off my last debt. I don't own a house and started with retirement for the first time last year, contributing atlest 9% of my income per month. I want to get to 1 million networks when I'm 38. Between August and September I spent 3 weeks in the hospital with covid. Add to that recovery time, I didn’t work for almost 5 months. I had a short term disability policy through AFLAC, but my emergency fund helped keep me afloat. Thankfully I took Dave’s advice awhile ago so I did have that fund 😁

1. Find little ways to save money. 2. Keep your emergency fund funded. 3. Don't go crypto-crazy. 4. Get a part time job. 5. Don't rely on the government to pay your student loans. 6. Don't fall for Afterpay. 7. Talk to your spouse about money. 8. Get on a budget. 9. Keep your eyes on what you have, not what others have. 10. Live on less than you make. This could have been boiled down to 1, which would have been a combination of 8 & 10. But people like Top Ten lists, so those should have been numbers 1 and 2 to start the video.

I love that Dave doesn't look down on adults doing service jobs. I think a lot of people are in situations where taking a second job even temporarily would improve their life drastically but they feel too embarrassed or above working these jobs. In my late 20's I took on a weekend job as a cashier and I remember so many people from highschool/college running into me and I could tell they were slightly looking down at me. Not all of them but I could see their arrogance. I wonder how many of them were/are debt free like me and saving for a down payment?

I know a lot about people like that.. it's sad that people think that way.. I have always had low paying jobs but mostly cause I enjoyed them. A couple I had were great paying well a living wage at least.. but gave it up as it was making me physically and mentally sick... I have never gone by the monies, never been out to get rich... In Fact, I don't know how those billionaires need that much money and some don't donate or give to family then they pass and money is gone ... even today that I am older people ask what would u do if u won a big lottery, would u by a mansion.. gawd no.. I live by my self would just like a med size condo probably some one to drive me around in a reg car not a limo and someone to help me with the clean and maintenance of the home.. Would by each of my family members a home not fancy just something they need not necessary want...

I love what Rachel had to say about online shopping - the add to cart and then close down the tab. I give myself a cooling-off period - at least 24 hours. A lot of the time I realise I can make do with what I already have, or I would rather save my money than have more clutter, but if I do decide to buy it I can do it guilt-free, it's been a mindful purchase for me.

Dave I love to hear the Bible verses with the saving money. I am where I need to be , on the right tract with my freedom to wealth. Budget has always been in my vocabulary and applied to my life. It helped me pay off my house in 7 years while I was raising 3 kids. My regular job and side jobs all being a single mom. They are al grown and own their own. Now, I continue to do the same things and I’m able to save money now. I put away the house payment money that I no longer pay, every month.

Started our budget this month and it feels so good. I left the house today without eating breakfast and I was tempted to buy a piece of pumpkin bread at the Starbucks in Target. I passed. My next stop was Walmart. Oddly, canned cat food is in short supply everywhere, thus Target and Walmart. I picked up an apple at Walmart. Such a little thing but saved a couple of dollars. every new years, I make a resolution based on finances. 2 years ago after discovering Dave Ramsey and his baby steps I made the resolution to pay my car off that year (2 years early on the loan) and I accomplished that goal. The following year I made the resolution to pay off my boat (3 years early on the loan) and I accomplished that goal. This year my goal is to get my 6 month emergency fund saved up. My bank account is currently the lowest it's ever been with just under 2 months expenses saved up with some big bills coming up in January and February, but by March if everything goes right I should be back up to about 3-4 months of expenses, but I'm more comfortable with 6 months. The house is set to be paid off in 2 years with minimum payments left, and I have no kids so no college fund to worry about.

Rachel being honest about her assumptions of people with nice things going on nice vacations. 🤣 I do that with people who have really clean houses. "She probably hires a house cleaner." Makes me feel better about myself. 😂

I put stuff on my shopping list online. Then I let it sit. Then I see if the need for anything comes back. If it does, I think again about buying the item. If not I consider just deleting it. Most items end up deleted. It really eliminates impulse buys.

Your habit of putting items in your online cart and then leaving the website works! I also did this when shopping a real store (especially with clothing). I touch it or try it on, put it in my cart, walk around the store with it and then put it back. Having items in my physical cart gave me that feeling of possession and putting them back saved me money!

I agree! I’ve done this in the past where I would have something in my cart for awhile and if I spend too much time in the store/get tired I no longer want the item anymore

Thanks to Dave for teaching me about emergency funds and sinking funds. Pandemic time my family was fine because I had money saved and could buy necessities when I heard people were “panic buying “. Thanks to the Preppers who taught me about stocking a pantry to survive crazy times. ❤️

I do the same thing with adding stuff to my cart but don’t buy it. I think I have over $1,500 in my Amazon cart. I look back and think, I’m so glad I didn’t buy it. Also I’ve had emergency funds that I’ve had to dip into and so glad that I did! Never got into crypto, kinda scared of it.

Random question but anyway you can tell me where you got the corner plant from? I've been looking for that size for months and can't find it. Thank you 👍

I have always wondered whenever Dave retires and steps away, will the company’s model for its baby steps ever change? Or will things be updated in anyway?

Love the program and the philosophy on money. It's a solid plan because it's based on consistent behavioral changes. That over time build on themselvs and become habbits.

I think people need to spend money on something, so instead of spending it on stuff you don't need, spend it on investments, your mortgage, follow the principles. Then you can at least feel you spending money when you start paying off your mortgage. My goal this year is to throw more money at my mortgage. Thanks to the Ramsey show for keeping us all focused, thank you!

Wow, I enjoyed this so much! (Does anyone else think of Succession's Logan Roy when listening to Dave?) Left debt behind in 2006. I viscerally get the wisdom spoken of here since I am indeed living like no one else. Immune to money trends. Do not bother with Instagram. I am totally on board with side hustles when they make sense (now I am 65 yet remain open to opportunities). Peace reigns in our house.
