As part of this minimalism journey to simplify life, I found that the more I say "no" the more time, space, and energy I have to set priorities for the things that matter most to me. ABOUT A TO ZEN LIFE
Along my journey to let go of 30 years of clutter, I accidentally became a minimalist and it was life-changing.
Before, I was an emotional hoarder with nothing but the clutter from lost loved ones - and $25,000 of debt - to my name. Now I have a beautiful home in Europe, a happy family, live debt-free, and - best of all - wake up to a life that I’m EXCITED to live every day.
My mission is to help you conquer your clutter and simplify YOUR way to a happier and better life. HERE'S OUR STORY: atozenlife.com/about-a-to-zen...

We said NO to buying a bigger house. We are a family of 4 and we felt the pressure to buy a bigger house with lots of land. So many people around us were buying huge homes. This meant we would have to work more and have more house to care for. We said No! We bought a smaller much more affordable house that fits us and our lifestyle. My can work less and cleaning a small house is so much easier ☺️. Thanks for this video!

We’re a two parent one child family. We live in a two bedroom apartment and constantly have to explain to relatives and friends why we don’t have plans to move. We are in a great area, good schools, no crime, so much green/wild space and two parks, great local businesses. There is definitely something to be said for being happy with ‘enough’. X

Best choice ever for us 35 years ago - live under our means in our comfortable home. I did not want to cool, heat or clean a larger home. Allowed us to choose to save as well as spend money on what was truly important to our family. And today it has allowed us to retire and enjoy this phase in life.

One thing I have learned to say no to is keeping up with people that are really just acquaintances and that is okay! For quite a long time I felt I had to maintain connections with people that I don’t necessarily have much in common with. Now I’m much more careful with whom I spend time and I cultivate few but more meaningful relationships.

Hi! I think the best things I have said NO to and that I no longer have in my life is toxic friendships where I used to let people take advantage of me being helpful and carring. I let them steal my time, my energy and used me without being one bit bothered about anything regarding me. Not anymore... I have learned to say No and to stand up for myself and don´t let other peoples believes, ideas and wants to be "unquestionable right" or "the only truth" , to take time, being in the center and overshadow me and my life. What is their "thig" might not apply at all to me or my live. I also try to say No to negative thought but that one is hard some days, easier others and a lifelong work in progress.

Mum guilt is real! My son just turned 3 and I outsourced the cake (which was awesome) to a local baker. I hate baking and it's totally ok to hate baking! It's taken me a while to accept that I won't be that mum who makes brownies for bake sale, or gets matching Christmas pyjamas but that's ok. My strengths lie elsewhere and I don't need to be an insta-perfect mum to be the perfect mum to my son

NO to all the mail and phone solicitations from charities/scams. I support three local charities so I know where my donations go. I don't pick up the phone if I don't recognize the caller I.D. and I toss all the mail solicitations into a rubbish bin on my back porch. No amount of "free" thank you gifts...totes, notepads, greeting cards, address labels and pens will change my mind!

I also said NO to “being exciting”. I’ve even started to embrace me being “boring”. Someone things knitting or cooking jam is not an interesting hobby? Well you don’t need to participate. On that note: I love crafts, but I’ve started to say NO to projects I won’t be able to incorporate in my life. I only knit pieces I will wear after. I don’t need the guilt after enjoying the crafting to hold onto an item I have no use for. I am over that! Also Marissa I would like to thank you very much! I discovered your channel a year ago and have been able to let go of so much clutter since then. It’s been liberating!

I love showing life with all the boring bits and no highlight reels. A couple of years ago I did a whole month of boring FB updates (eg 'hotdog legs' looking out over my messy backyard, an unboxing video of me opening my contact lens order, doing the laundry etc). It was fun and although nice to celebrate people's highlights it's also good to remember that lots of life is just everyday things, but there can also be joy in those things too.

Thank you. As a viewer, I get frustrated when a creator I like puts the same images and messages on multiple platforms. I usually unsubscribe to redundant posts. And now, I only check Facebook once every two weeks, and only to look for photos of family and international friends. I am almost done with Instagram where I am aware of my Fear Of Missing Out. I am limiting my subscriptions to recipes and inspiration not posting on other platforms. I have defaulted to RU-vid for News on demand, household inspiration, how-to art and music, , health information/food safety/food sourcing/healthy recipes, free movies and books on tape, music and comedy performance, limited live group lessons/discussions. I am also aware that during early covid isolation days I over-indulged in online connections and now I am going to the other extreme and I am intentionally minimizing all but the most valuable. So, YES, I find your content valuable. Well done! Please keep it coming. I love your quality over quantity. I love hearing your thought process as it helps me grow my own thinking.

As someone who is a creator and a mom who doesn’t have a lot of extra time, I can understand why they share the same stuff to multiple platforms. It does save time and not everyone is following you EVERYWHERE (as I know because I have 125,000 followers on RU-vid and only 6000 on Instagram lol.) but the number one thing is for YOU to keep the social media that you enjoy, and forget the rest! ✨🙌✨

Life-changing "no" for me was shutting off the voice in my head that had me worrying what other people thought of my actions, or lack thereof (sometimes pressuring me into saying yes to actual commitments). In some cases I knew that I was the only person who thought less of me for not doing something; in others, there's a likelihood certain people do judge me for my choices but I decided they can get over it because I won't be controlled by their expectations! (I sincerely value acting out of love and compassion, but have come to find that others are ungrateful and still judge you even when you are kind!) This has been so freeing AND, hey, nothing bad has ever happened -- go figure!

Best thing I've ever said "No!" to is to go live in my parents' house to care for them, or have them come live in my house with me. Though either seems on the surface like it MIGHT simplify my life and save a lot of gas money, I know I need my own space and time to recharge, and I never get good sleep unless I'm in my own bed, undisturbed. If I am stressed out all the time, I would be no good to my parents, anyone else in my life, or even myself, and being around my parents for extended periods of time without a significant break really pushes my buttons. I already know that I don't do well unless I have at least 2 days off between the ones I already spend with them. So, "NO!"

My favorite thing to say ‘no’ to (and there are a lot of them 😆) is aunt guilt. My sister likes to use my niece to pressure me into doing things that I don’t want to do. She doesn’t do it as much now that my niece is a teenager, but it still happens. I love my niece, and she is a high priority in my life, but I am still my highest priority. I don’t have children for a reason. And I have a closer relationship with my niece than probably a lot of aunts do because her father is not in her life. However, when I need to use my time and money on me, that is what I am going to do. The moments that I say ‘no’ to my sister are few, and I think that’s what is so frustrating. Instead of being appreciative of all the things I do, she will harp on the few times I’ve said no. I have to be careful not to build up resentment toward my sister for seeming ungrateful.

Okay so Im going way back, but about 10 years ago when I was around 28, some of my friends were still going out on the weekends to clubs or bars. I would always come up with some excuse why I couldn’t go when really I just didn’t want to go. Eventually I just started telling them the truth and I would just say “no I don’t want to go”. Some would understand and one girl got annoyed and didn’t understand but I didn’t care and from then on learning to say no to things I didn’t want to do came easier and easier.

❤I have had a great deal of trouble saying NO….. but after health issues, etc. I realize how important it is. I chose which things were gratifying and would continue, and which things to stop. The top few are: being at the beck and call of a neighbor who always needs to be driven to wherever she wants to go, this would take full days, and sometimes several times a week. Another thing is sewing, I have sewed all my life, making charity quilts, masks, hygiene items to be sent to missions, I was sewing 15 hrs a day….STOP! I put the machine away, gave away ALL my fabric, have an enjoyably neat space. I also used to preform in a musical group but gave that up as well. For me life is so much calmer and enjoyable. I still have to be careful not to let myself get drawn into things “NO” is not always easy…..

My best "No" was the boundary I set between myself and my mother, and thus the rest of the family that she basically controls. I have been much healthier, if a bit lonelier. I have so much more mental energy and feel protected against most of the toxicity. (I say "most" because I still hear about her behaviour through my dad. I think me being on the outside of it all means I'm the only one he can talk to. Another boundary I need to set? Maybe.)

Each utensil was a distinct character, and I never hurt myself with the saw because it was one of the dangerous character, and in my mind, I knew I had to be careful around this character. It was very fun, and when I was done, I would go back to the kitchen, and return the utensils to my mum, who was intuitive enough to know I wasn't going to hurt myself (I'm sure she kept an eye on me while playing).

Dear Marissa, I am also a SLP, and I work mainly with autostic children. It is a very satisfying job, but it can be very guilt-inducing at times. And some patients do know how to guilt trip you.... This week I've set firm limits twice thanks to you, and I feel much better. Have a nice day :)

Love all your videos honey!! Tell Mr Zen that I loved his FIRST blog post!!MORE please!! The best thing I said NO to was to being scapegoated by myself and others!! Scapegoating happens very insidiously and is very very sneaky comes in many many disguises!!! To me, Scapegoating and Codependency are cousins... XXOO

I said NO and left Facebook over 3 years ago....I did not realize how addicted I had become to it until 4 days after I left. I then discovered how much stress it had created within me. I have stayed connected via texting and good Ole fashioned phone calls with my true friends 🙂

Minimalism is never boring, the state of boring is really a mindset. Minimalism is freedom, having too much is boring because you get too distracted on everything. Like Netflix has so many options, sometimes I don't watch anything. I use to get free stuff next to the trash when I lived in a apartment complex, but after awhile I would put back outside.

Glad you can do it, Ginger. My mom also has dementia, and my dad isn't far behind, has physical limitations. I love them, but they need more help than I can give them. I said "No!" to both living with them and to having them come live with me. Not sure where that is ultimately going to end up, but I know my limitations. I'm glad you are happy doing it, but don't forget to re-evaluate the situation from time to time if you find it no longer works for you. Great book: "Cruising Through Caregiving: Reducing the Stress of Caring For Your Loved One" by Jennifer L. FitzPatrick. Peace & Prayers, Lisa :)

My children! I used to give in to my kids more and wasting money on stuff that would end up broken or disgarded and cluttering up the house. Now I put the item on a list on my phone and if, after a couple of weeks, they haven't mentioned it, I will delete it. If they still want it after that time, we look at whether they can afford it out of their own pocket money, whether it is something they can save up for, or whether it will be a birthday or Christmas present. We don't get it right 100% of the time - we still make the odd impulse purchase - but we do manage it a good 95% of the time! Hopefully it is teaching them some money management too ❤️

I have recently said 'No' to family photo albums. Honestly, I don't even know who half the people in my grandmother's albums are! I am now the senior generation in my family. If I don't know who those people are in the photo's, who will? I scanned ones I thought later generations would be interested in, and dropped them onto a memory card, which I gave as a Christmas present.

As you know I am still working on saying the word no. The one thing I have recently proud of myself for saying no to is saying no to travelling all the time for every holiday. It gets exhausting and trying to spend time splitting all the holidays with all sides of family with them all living 2hours away and having some in town. I say no...I will travel when I can and feel happy about traveling...it has made the holidays full of joy instead of stress.

My hardest no has been receiving items from others. My mum doesn't have a hoarder house in the sense of walking through a jungle of stuff but every cupboard, drawer, shed etc is crammed with stuff and she has a large house and is also very good at finding things on fb marketplace. She equates giving items with showing love and it took a long time and a lot of talking things through to help her realising that me rejecting the chest of drawers that I didn't need was not me rejecting her shows of love. We're having a baby soon and I have said very gently but firmly to people "I do not want my house filled with plastic toys and knitted cardigans. If you see something you think we'll like that you want to get for us, check with me first, whether I want it or not I will appreciate you thinking of us"
