10 Things You’ve Always Wanted to Know About Grand Seiko, But Were Too Afraid to Ask …
I’m sure everyone reading this has, at some point, felt that feeling of utter bewilderment of being in a conversation about watches with Grand Seiko being no exception. The level of technical jargon, slang and verbal shorthand can be confusing at best and exclusionary at worst - it can feel like a club with its very own secret language. And the hardest thing is that the language changes with every brand. Take Grand Seiko, for instance - you have to get your head around reference numbers, specific nomenclature and calibres, not to mention the vast and colourful world of fan-based nicknames.
But don’t worry, today we’re here to help you crack the code. If you’ve ever been confused about what makes Grand Seiko so grand, why everyone keeps talking about Snowflakes and Spring Drives, or what a Credor is, watch this and all will be explained …

Anyone else think that many Rolex guys who dismiss the spring drive would be praising it if Rolex invented it?

100% Rolex guy’s are intimidated by GS. You see it in their comments, they don’t make sense.

It’s the same bs as people bragging about their football team is better than yours. Unless you are on the team you have no right to brag about it. Unless you helped design a Lexus you can’t say it’s better than another car because you just simply bought it. Where is the skill in that. Anyone can buy anything

Sadly the whole Rolex thing gets up my nose. There is barely a watch in their collection that I even like. The new coloured Prepetual I think they are, are nicely made with great colours. Then they ruined it by putting that stupid jester hat in place of the 12 o'clock hour marker. ... The datejust is OK too. The rest of Rolex is overopulence for the sake of charging a fortune.

I agree with Throwmeabone. Spring Drive is really something special. If you want a quartz level of accuracy, but you don't want a quartz watch, Spring Drive is your only option. I respect a well-made automatic, but that is arguably old technology. The most accurate Swiss automatic watch that I know of, Rolex, doesn't have a movement that even comes close to Spring Drive in regards to accuracy. I would also say that no watch company can compare with GS's dials, and the detailed attention devoted to GS's hands, markers, and case is unparalleled.
@thelonious-dx9vi
@thelonious-dx9vi 4 года назад
Mmmm. I am on that exact fence right now. I know spring drive *is* a mechanical movement, hand-built with soul and all that. Respect. But I'm still drawn to fully mechanical. If the SBGA413 "Spring", with the pink dial, were an automatic, I'd just be all over that.

Helpful video, but you forgot SBGR. In my mind, you have to handle a Grand Seiko to appreciate them. I find them pretty boring in pictures, but recently tried a silver dial SBGR299 and it dances under light like you can’t believe. And the weight of the case and bracelet are perfect. And the blue second hand...I’m definitely adding one to the collection.

Fiat justitia ruat cælum The spring drive from an engineering standpoint should be nearly indestructible. No balance wheel which could break less friction in the system and the quartz components are assembly similar to there GS quartz watches which are pretty bullet prove. So 20 years without an service isn't that unrealistic.
@debendragurung3033
@debendragurung3033 6 лет назад
When you want a GS, I would recommend always get the Spring Drive. It's the unique movement which defines Seiko. If you want a mechanical watch- there are plentiful others, And you obviously don't want a luxury battery powered Quartz. But if you want a quartz - that is not battery powered but powered by your wrist, behold the one and only Spring Drive. There aren't any othet brand who does this. And GrandSeiko not only does it but have perfected it. It's really an art - since it is not battery powered and rather powered by the main spring, the tolerance of voltage, capacitance and current are in absolute low threshold, probably at mcroAmpere and microFarad range(I don't exactly know since Seiko don't publish it). Its tolerance are so damn critically controlled that it is the king of any digital chips. It's truly an art that marries the traditional matchmaking with the modern timekeeping oscillators that revolutionized the last century. If you want a Grand Seiko , get one Spring Drive for sure and then think about others.....
@arapaimagold8088
@arapaimagold8088 5 лет назад
They cost about the same money for maintenance. The problem is, not all country has certified watchmaker for servicing Springdrive. So you must shipped the watch back to Japan. Which is better, because case polishing already included in service package. And the best man for the job are no other than the Japanese itself.
@CrimFerret
@CrimFerret 5 лет назад
@@debendragurung3033 The spring drive movement is mechanical movement that uses a quartz oscillator curcuit to regulate the speed of the drive gear that's being turned by the power from the mainspring through magnetic braking. It works nothing like a regular quartz watch. The spring drive module basically replaces the hairspring escapement on a more traditional mechanical watch. Aside from the neat sweep seconds hand, it also means watches that use it are extramely resistant to shock and magnetic fields. They are mechanical watches though. As you mentioned, the amount of electrical energy that makes the system work is incredibly small and part of the reason it took two decades of R&D.

Grand Seiko 9s85 accuracy is actually worse than Rolex’s superlative chronometer at +2/-2 per day. However we must understand that this iteration of the GS movement (9s) was introduced back in 1998. I suspect the next iteration of GS movement will have free sprung balance wheel with eccentric adjustable nodes. I own both GS and Rolex and I’m sorry, apart from the dial the Rolex is better in all other areas especially the bracelet. AFAIK the next generation of GS mech movement is in developement phase so I suggest you guys not to put the trigger too soon

You dont have a battery so you dont need to change it and it cant end up ruining your movement, also you get some of the charm from a automatic with some of the upsides from a quarts. Non! Seiko and Grand Seiko are the same brand i.e. "corporation" but different lines, saying anything else is just ludicrous. The SEIKO "5"'s are the best thing before GS because they're not as ugly looking as Seiko mid-tiers.
@elliottaxinn7132

@@elliottaxinn7132: I'd go with their best mechanical and automatics before I'd go with the SD's, but that is also because I resent the fact that they pulled their smooth moving quartz movements and that I don't see a SD's as GS, and that they're far overpriced, like a tourbillon etc. It's ludicrous for Seiko to make any sort of quartz piece and especially the SD as a GS considering just how SEIKO is so overly paranoid about their image. Seiko could really benefit from psycho analysis or something? LOL

Of course I watched the video. Or was that a rhetorical question? Recently I wanted to buy another watch and decided to have a look at SEIKO. I looked at SARB/SARX/SARY/SARG/GS. That was when I realised that, to me, they all looked similar (not talking about diver's watches) and a bit bland looking. I couldn't see anything special about any them that would make me want to own a SEIKO. Sorry, but there was no WOW! factor for me. 0:41 Take away the power reserve indicator and it looks like a SARB035, which cost £300. I know it's got a better dial, I know it's got a better bracelet and I know it's got a better movement BUT it still (to me) looks like a SARB035. And I'm not a watch novice.
