Seiko can be a TV watch and a computer watch, too. Seiko is not only a brand that's an expert watch maker but also a risk taker. And quirky as hell too, but we love it for it!
I believe Seiko 5 is a watch thats undergone Mitosis every month or so. First you have one, and then suddenly there's at least 5 of them laying around😂
I'm wearing a Grand Seiko "Katana", a US-only limited edition. Mine is 287/500. Watching the smooth sweep of the second hand is mesmerizing for sure. The Spring Drive accuracy in phenomenal. As for the bracelet, I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. Yes, there is no micro adjustment, but maybe I got lucky and found the perfect fit after my watchmaker removed the necessary number of links. You could always go with a leather strap if the bracelet isn't to your liking. As a matter of fact, it comes with a strap. The finish on a Grand Seiko is second to none in my opinion.
@@DanSchrimpsher it’s too bad you can never replace the strap with one of thousands of choices. Material, color, style unlimited. Simple cheap pre-made or complicated fully custom exotics. It’s just sad that no such options exist….

Japanese love to see their tools/machines worn out and broken from hard use. German and Swiss want you to admire their tools and machines. That’s why Japanese cars run longer. Not because they’re better, they aren’t. But because they’re designed to be used by people who won’t follow instruction manuals perfectly or use their tools/machines in the ideal environment. (Don’t change your oil in your Camery for 30,000kms, it keeps going without issue. Treat your BMW that way and it’s toast first time, every time.
One thing that I think needs to be said is that even though there’s this narrative that Seiko is price gouging, Long Island Watch recently did a video that pretty succinctly showed that Seiko is still putting out good timepieces for a good price. It’s just that the watches are now coming up to RRP and inflation, but even still, Seiko still tries to put a fair price on their new offerings. “We live in a society”, as they say.
They already raised prices (without fixing qc issues) before the enormous inflation started. Improvements such as the 6R35 turned out to be less than great. I keep wat I have but moved on to Citizen (JDM) watches and some Bulova watches.
They're nearly as quick as the ones constantly crying about brand heritage and design every time someone dare say anything even remotely negative! 👨🏻🦲👍🏻
Those haters, as if by magic, also tend to have some blatantly wrong and outrageous watch hot takes across the board, so they are pretty easy to ignore.
I really love the design of Seikos, but I've gotta say that their QC has left a lot to be desired in my experience. I received a SRPE61 for my birthday 2 years ago and noticed that there was a literal hair on the dial. Small, but once I saw it, there was no going back. Thankfully I returned it and received a hair-free model. Yet with the replacement, I realized much too late that the hand winding did not work. Not a big deal when I wore it every day, but now that I have a couple more watches, it's a real hassle. Would love to try another seiko someday, but I have some trust issues now.
Thanks! I will save this, and use it to settle arguments! I could buy a Seiko a day. Currently, I am recovering from a stroke. (I lived. The recovery? A work in progress..) while rehabbing and therapy, I usually change Seikos twice a day.
I do own a SPB143 Diver, a SPB121 Alpinist and just bought a Seiko 5 SPK87 "SNXS". I love the look of those watches and I don't care if value is not great anymore and QC might be quite random they make me happy
Bought myself a Tissot dress watch a few months back and thoroughly enjoyed it. Until my wife bought me a Seiko Arnie which now hasn't left my wrist. Now scouring for what Seiko I want next.
The fact that there are thousands and thousands of after market and modding parts at various price points and qualities makes Seikos and Seiko modding a phantastic playground to enjoy for your whole life! Want to mimic an expensive model but for way less money? Check! Create something entirely unique? Check! Still loving my SPB144 that's just one better than the original!

@earthenjadis8199 What gives you that impression? I just get really enthusiastic about horological content and tend to go on about it. My point is that Seiko takes risks and not only innovates but also does some bold, unconventional things from time to time. This approach is quite refreshing and contributes to that unique Seiko feel that so many people love.
I'm mostly with your friend Mo. I have several Seikos and don't like wearing them because of what the brand had become: overpriced with inconsistent but lacking quality control. That's not charming or rare. It's common and a real problem. The only Seiko I'm interested in now is the Alpinist GMT with green dial. Grand Seiko, yes, awesome! But they ain't $1,000 either. Tell Mo to get a Bulova Jet Star or Super Seville. Or a 7S26 SNXS with upgraded bracelet/strap. 👍🏼

I bought a Seiko Presage “Style60’s” - SRPG05J1 a couple of days ago. I couldn't believe how much better it looked in the real than in the pictures. I really didn't plan to buy a watch that day or anytime soon, but I couldn't walk out of there without it. And I wonder if this isn't about to take the throne as my favourite in my little collection.
Ouch! You’re not wrong. Spent $750 on an alpinist just for it to have a misaligned compass and they consider that “normal”. I adore my Samurai, but I don’t think I’ll buy from them again. $300 for 5 Sport, cool. $600 for Presage, okay. $1200 for an SPB143? $2800 for a marinemaster?! The brand has completely lost its identity, but people are obviously buying them up. Meanwhile Citizen does every Seiko does at half the price without QC issues and provides eco-drive, and titanium offerings, etc.
I don’t understand how someone could ask for a recommendation around £500 and then when you give them a great answer they say “aren’t Seiko’s cheap”. It seems like this friend is looking for something with more brand cache, but for most “muggles” that is Rolex and I’m not sure what else.

I fall into the “doesn’t love Seiko” camp. I recently bought one, and it’s easily the worst experience I’ve ever had with a watch. I bought an Arnie, and it doesn’t work. Factory resets when exposed to light. Kind of a big deal for a solar watch. Sent it into Seiko to have them fix it (paid shipping on my own dime), and got it back after about a month. I crack it open, take it outside, and it resets again. Apparently it’s an issue endemic to the 2023/24 Arnies. Horrible QC, and bad CS. It’s killed any desire for me to purchase from the brand again into the future. Casio was already getting my money, but now they’ve assured my loyalty.
Well I have 5 Seikos and they’re all perfect 🤷🏼♂️ if you want solar buy Casio or Citizen, seiko you buy automatic, don’t waste your time on quartz. Hope you give them another shot.
@@Matt-mh5us I personally think that answer is a cop out. The Arnie is an iconic watch, and one that I wanted to try. As my first Seiko, this experience was so poor that it will certainly be my last Seiko.
It's hard to resist Seiko, as much as I try. I now have 4, including a vintage 6138-0030 automatic chronograph. 3 of them were picked up AFTER I got my Explorer II, so going high has not ruined my love for the brand.

Great, welcome to the club! Before I got into watches I just had a Seiko Solar SNE056, purchased in 2012 for $103. In January 2024 I replaced the rechargeable battery and it’s still running great. Now, I have 8 Seiko watches in my 15 watch collection. Five of these are vintage. A Laurel made in 1960 and a pocket watch made in 1971, for example. The vintage watches keep better time than my Presage! I have never paid more than $500 for a watch. Seiko! ❤
JUST CAUSE A WATCH IS EXPENSIVE IT DOESN’T MAKE IT BETTER. I BOUGHT A PRE OWNED HUBLOT MDM REDUCED FROM $6K TO $1600 AND IT STILL FEELS LIKE HIGHWAY ROBBERY. I just like the look, but doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be worth way less below a thousand
Gotta love Seiko. They're the everyman's watch. As for their QC, owned a Kinetic Sport 150 back in the day & it was still going strong 17 years later. It was never serviced. I still own five or six & appreciate them as much as my Rolex & Tudor.
I have a Seiko Arnie from early 1980s. Served me well in the military and working in west Africa. The thin gold plate wore off fast on the dresser watches. I prefer the Citizen eco drives. I have many!
The problem with being an affordable brand is that you'll never shake that stigma no matter what you do. Kia has been making $65k+ EVs for years now and still can't get the general public to stop thinking of them as the cheap car brand.
Loved you making case for Seiko. I grew up with Seiko watches and love them ... It was in every man and woman wrists in the 70's...the women autos are more intriguing for being so little and tiny ....imagine putting together those movements.
Reliability? Sometimes. Accuracy? Never. Affordability? You really have to spend at least $2000 before you notice good enough quality in a Seiko to barely match certain watches priced under $300 that use the same movements, just regulated in multiple positions. It's a shame because they're my favorite brand, but the Seiko we love is no longer. Great entry point for "muggles", just not particularly well put together. It's like wearing makeup; The SEIKO logo does half the work.
Sorry, but citizen is dominating right now, they're the enthusiasts new friend. Old seiko was amazing, sarbs, snks, etc. New seiko is terrible. The 6r movements are trash. The 4r's are much better and the stupidly inflated prices for NOTHING extra are insulting. Seiko are still good up to about 500 but anything north of that is hands down a rip off. You have plenty of Hamiltons, certinas and even longines in that bracket which offer so much more.
Seiko is for the average person from all walks of life. Once a person becomes more successful, more accomplished, more significant, more iconic, on the legendary status like a bigtime businessman, bigtime celebrity, bigtime icon then that person will exclusively wear and collect Swiss watch. No matter how hard Seiko works on their watches, they just can't beat the Swiss Elite status

The only thing I don’t like about seiko when it comes to watches $500 below are their bracelets sometimes can feel flimsy and not as heavy, or has weight to it, feels cheap in a sense, it doesn’t have that premium bracelet feels compared to a $300-$400 Tissot watch their bracelet has weight and has this smooth feeling to touch.
Been there re: audio. A couple times actually. I wish Seiko's weren't so damn ugly. They're the Great Value brand Tissot. Pick one up at your local Wal-Mart today!
No automatic movement over $200 should even be spec’ed to +/- 35 seconds per day. If you were it for a week, by the end of that week, you’re likely late. I can be late for free
I’m not sure about Seiko 5 Sport GMT series having a work hors movement. I bought mine in 2022 which I used every day a whole year, until I in 2023 bought a Certina DS Action Diver Powermatic 80. From then on I only rarely used my Seiko 5 Sport GMT. Then, this summer (2024), the Seiko 5 Sport GMT began slowing 1 hour within 24 hours, and without no reason. It has not been exposed to any shock, extreme temperatures or water. So I wonder if Seiko 5 series belongs to the «beater»-category. As far as I understand the SKX-series had far more superior quality for the same price. Can’t beleive why Seiko didn’t use 316L steel and sapphire for such cool looking watch as Seiko 5 Sports GMT. You find 316L steel and sapphire is so cheap that one find it on $ 90,- quartz watches.
i don't like modern seiko's at all, the old models you could see they were affordable watches but they still had a nice solid and utilitarian feel to them. Modern day seiko's focus more on looking more expensive than they are and sacrifice on that solid utilitarian feel. You have to really hold them both to know what i mean. I'm not saying a modern seiko is going to last less long than an old one but the feel just isn't there anymore.
I think for most people the £200-£300 range it makes sense for people to either buy the older seiko 5 or the Orient Ray, mako, kano or kamasu or something in the citizen promaster or citizen fugu series.
Hi Brit I’m northern Irish and my seiko collection spans from my birth date 1967 December I’ve two watches from that year and month got about 30 or so seiko got ultra rare one two not your mainstream pups but far more interesting than the no1 s of their day belmatics actus first black knight rare alpinest 017 and a few more .the 2020 of 2020 yes that last alpinest of that infamous release rock face few divers so yes only seiko why a catholic priest I stayed with in Belgium who showed me his seiko collection when I went for many years to stay with him under the euro children skeam as a war kid from Belfast back in the 70s good vid luv x

Because seiko offers a ton of value and class. I nearly have all the Prospex lines and it's because they are so seriously good and mechanisms can be regulated to run at or close to chronometer spec.

(Yeah, I’m old…😒) Seikos are great and have many styles and colors. I also have Tissots, an Omega, and one Orfina. Seiko has a place in my collection. 😎⌚️
My dad wore a seiko for 40 years.. now I and my wife both wear seikos. There's just something to it - HERITAGE that a smartwatch or the others can't give and I don't have to worry about it serving as a daily beater.

Seiko over delivers? AAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA And you are a watch enthusiast? LOL You're getting a non Japan made watch, with their bottom of the barrel movement for $500. That's the opposite of over delivering, that's garbage. Seiko used to over deliver 20 years ago when you used to be able to buy a watch that was Made in Japan and was cheaper than the equivalent Swiss Made watch, or if it did cost the same as the equivalent Swiss Made watch, the Seiko had a better movement. Today, you get a watch that is not made in Japan (it's made in China, Malaysia or where ever so it should be cheaper but it isn't), has Seiko's bottom of the barrel 4R35 movement, and it costs the same as a Swiss Made watch with a better ETA movement. Seiko watches in the range of $500 to $1000 have become hot garbage. For a lower price, you can get a better quality Citizen watch (also not made in Japan but it's cheaper and the quality and quality controls are much better (no misaligned bezels/chapter rings/dials)) or an equivalently price Swiss made watch with a better movement.
Seiko has my Rollie’s collecting dust been like that for the past 3 years lovem Why do I love Seiko? Because Seiko replaced all the below. Seiko SSK’s Replaced my Rolex GMT’s Seiko SRPD/SKX: Rolex Sub SARB033: Replaced my Rolex Explorer Seiko Tank: Replaced my Cartier tank with gold and silver options and an easier to change battery that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to work on 🔋
So, I gotta ask like, with that Seiko whale-watch, do I need to register it every day, when the license plate on the whale-mouth changes, and how much does it cost, is it like my Toyota, just got to ask, because that is like 100 bucks, but just once a year, but this would be like 365 x 100, so like ... multiply by 5.3822 and hold Pi, integrate ... OH WOW MAN 35thousand500 bucks every year??? What a watch, it's like gotta be GOOD, if it costs that much just to register it, ain't it???
I actually don't find the price-performance ratio of Seiko that great. Especially when compared to quality watches from Sea-Gull, you often get better craftsmanship and a superior movement for a given price. For example, the Ocean Star with the ST21 movement for less than 300 € (don’t be distracted by the brand's origin, they stand out significantly from typical Chinese brands). I’m actually a fan of Seiko and own three, ranging from about 2000 to 11,000 €. While I think some watches like the White Birch offer great value, there are really good competitors from other manufacturers for just a few hundred euros. A current example is the Smiths W.W.W. PRS 59, a great historically inspired watch that arrived this week and is also of excellent quality. However, the more affordable Seikos I've handled felt less premium and somewhat disappointing for the price point, especially when compared to other budget-friendly brands.
