When I saw this as a kid in the mid 90's, I was terrified of it. But as I got older, I come to appreciate it in not only as a sci-fi thriller esk but as a comedy as well.

I just watched this movie tonight (with my kids) again for the first time in years. I thought that they hadn't seen it, but my daughter was like, "Wait, is this the movie where the lady gets her head switched with a dog?" I nodded, and she was like, "I hate this movie. It terrified me as a kid." I was so shocked, cuz I'm sure that I wouldn't have shown her this when she was little. That scene was all she could remember, so I think she must have walked in on me watching or something. Anyhoo, she was able to laugh at the movie today, but still maintains that she's gonna have nightmares about it.

The end of Mars Attacks where they are defeated by music also felt a bit like an homage to the end of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes as well, as in the end of the movie, the tomatoes lose their powers and get turned back into regular tomatoes when the hear the “worst song ever made”, called “Puberty Love”, which is sung like the singer’s voice is changing while he singing the song.

This was by far one of the best videos you have shared ! Slim Whitman & his family were long time friends of mine . From what I understood at the time ; Burtons production company called them and asked them for permission to use his music in the film . Slim thought it was a wonderful idea , he loved it Shortly before the film came out he was telling us about it all during his concert in my home town in 1995 , we were all very excited waiting for it to premiere at the theaters . Both Slim & his wife Jerry have both since passed on but, his music lives on through his son Byron Whitman .

Minty you forgot a very cool important fact! The buildings in Las Vegas that were being blowned up were actualy demolished. The old buildings were already old and schedule to be demolition so they actually blew them up for the movie. So when you're actually watching the movies and these buildings go down they were actually being demolished. I know this because I actually went to Las Vegas after the movie was released. They talked about it.

The first time I saw Mars Attacks in theaters, the film melted just as it was about to see the defeat of the martians. At first we thought it was one of the gags in the film, but nope, it really did melt!!! We got our money back and then went to see it again at a later time! I have always loved the film from day one, and it was disappointing that it failed at the box office. I bought it on laserdisc, and again on DVD. Elfman ' s music is great. I bought the CD as soon as it was available. Actually, if I remember correctly, I had to preorder it at one of the music stores back then. It is among my top five Elfman scores. In no particular order: Batman, Mars Attacks, Nightbreed, Spider-man, Batman Returns.
@JKVisFX
@JKVisFX 2 года назад
Mars Attacks! is still one of my favorite comedies of all time. The music added a great deal to that humor. Watch the original "The Day the Earth Stood Still" which had that wonderful lead theremin instrument, that was the inspiration for the music in Mars Attacks. Another fun fact: the "Ack ack ack-ack" dialog for the Martians was a place-holder scratch track that Tim Burton and his sound guy recorded that they intended to replace with a re-recorded version in post. But, they just were not able to recreate a version they liked as much as the temp. scratch track no matter how hard they tried so, they wound up just using their original temp scratch track.

To be 100% honest iv'e watched Mars Attacks so many times more than Independence Day...and i think it's because of the great comedy, great CGI, and bigger cast...this movie was released in 1996 and it's one of those movies that looks like it was made more further future ahead in time like terminator 2 which blend in well with modern movies with great CGI and it's becoming more noticeable and more popular as years go by....and for movies like Mars Attacks it can take years for a film like this to become a classic which i think it already is. I was a kid when i first watched it and i grew up with this movie...i love it and it's a work of art.

I collected the Dinosaurs Attack cards! I think I have a full set. They were brilliantly campy, just like Mars Attacks, and would still make for a great movie. I always felt like the PlayStation game "Destroy All Humans!" was a spiritual homage to Mars Attacks. You're absolutely right about the soundtrack. Theremins for the win! Not to nitpick, but it's "THE Nightmare Before Christmas", not "A Nightmare Before Christmas".

#11 - The Donut Jokes In the movie, there are numerous references to donuts that seemingly come out of nowhere. Why was this a thing? As it turns out, Tim Burton just thinks donuts are super funny, so threw some donut jokes in for the lols.

Something else I didn't know about "Mars Attacks": the cattle stampede & doughnut shop scenes were filmed less than one hundred miles from where I live. This was right before I got on the internet for the first time. I am certain that had I been on the internet when these scenes were filmed I would have known about it and could have driven to these filming sites to merely observe from a distance or offer to be an extra, a go-fer, or anything. The very idea of Tim Burton filming near my hometown and not knowing at the time was really a missed opportunity. The flaming cattle scene was filmed just outside of Lawrence, Kansas, a mere twenty miles away. The doughnut shop scene was filmed between Wichita & Emporia, Kansas--another easy drive. And I never saw anything in our local media that Tim Burton was filming his next epic in the Sunflower State. That should have been the headline in the newspaper, but then again, I can imagine the crew not wanting fans bothering them.

He was supposed to be in charge of the miniatures for the model animated sequences. He was told it was mostly time decision, in order to do puppet animation it would have taken at least two years to complete so Burton was told that he would lose the project if he didn't go CGI. From what I understand Burton was very upset about this and just wanted to be done with it at that point.

I took my 11 year old to see this back then, and I was expecting more of the “true” Mars Attacks from the Topps cards. We both thought it was goofy at first, but then we both liked it. We still joke about it today, and every now and then bust out the Slim Whitman Ahhhh-Ooooooo ! Lol.

I remember reading a story in SFX magazine a while after Mars Attacks! was released that said Warner Bros still wanted to make a sequel (it had done well in Europe) but on a lower budget. The plot was supposed to be that some of the Martians had been captured and they were going to escape and cause havoc. Jack Nicholson was going to make an appearance as the president’s ghost.

Dont let this distract you from the fact that when Paul Walker goes to Vin Diesel's house party in The Fast and the Furious 1, they're playing "I Got Hoes by Ludacris on the stereo. But in 2 Fast 2 Furious, Ludacris appears as street racer Tej Parker. So in the Fast & Furious Universe. who sang "I got Hoes"? Was it Tej? Was it Ludacris? Does Ludacris exist? And if not, what happened to the Hoes? Who got them now? Are the Hoes OK? Thanks Minty for helping me start my day off with a laugh 😂

You’re great Minty. I thought there was one more awesome thing people may not know. The way the Martians talk was inspired by the Charley Chaplin masterpiece, City Lights. At the beginning of the film, a mayor of the city is giving a speech, and they used a Kazoo in the score to make fun of Talkies. It sounds exactly like the Martians. The clip is here on RU-vid. I think you would get a kick at it. Thanks for your videos. They are awesome.

Coincidence? Stern wrote his story in 1982? Excuse me but they both ripped off Attack of The Killer Tomatoes (1978). The song "Puberty Love" defeated the invaders, which itself is a parody of the ridiculous fact that the aliens were defeated in War of The Worlds by a simple virus and Invasion of The Flying Saucers where sound is the weapon. I thought more people would have seen that by now.

Never knew Alex Cox had interest. Would've been a interesting take indeed. Mars Attacks just went off the rails for me though. Especially Nicholson in the dual role, which didn't go anywhere. And the ending just made me appreciate Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes that much more. Tim really should've got the Zucker Bros. In on the script or production. Then the movie may have beaten Airplane! and such. It just stands as 6 of one, half dozen of the other for me still. Anyhow, good job as always Minty and Squiggles! :-)

Good one Minty, love it as always. But $260 Million (US) budget!!!! It was actually $70 Million. The first film to cost $260 Million was Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End at $300 million and that wasn't until 2007. I love this film but always thought it was a bit of Hollywood dumbness having the human disguised alien need to chew nitrogen gum... Conversation I had after Mars Attacks. Me: Why did the beehive woman alien have to chew nitrogen gum? Our atmosphere is 78% nitrogen already, we survive on 21% Oxygen, that's scientifically stupid. My Mate: But you're OK with swapping heads with a dog? Me: .............. :-(

Mary’s portrayal as the Alien/Human was damn creepy, those arm sways always creep me out (because part of night paralysis (which is always mistaken as something else) is waking from a dream and finding yourself in paralysis mode - but your dream comes to you instantaneously before you begin to sleep/or wake to normal. Seeing creatures moving through your house in impossible ways. I used to have these images of 12’x6’ gerbils moving slowly down our 10’x4’ hallways, although their steps didn’t match their movements. For each step they took, they would move 10 steps....yeah the hallway was extended too as the gerbils moved down the halls, peeking in my room as they pass.

I am old enough to have collected the cards - much to my grandmothers disgust - back in the early sixties and the imagery has stayed with me and so the film was just what the doctor ordered. The new version of the collectible cards is okay, but I still prefer the originals. Fun fact, when the designs were originally passed to Tpps management for approval, it was not the horrific violence that was rejected but tat fact that there was far too much tanned female flesh on view and the artists were ordered to "cover up " the ladies for fear of corupting young models. If yu lok at some of the cards, eg Beauty and the beast featued in Minty's video, you can almost see where the offending skin has been replaced withe more demure nightgown. As always another great watch, thanks Minty
