Mr. Sinjin-Smyth there's a video I remembered seeing on RU-vid that showed all the actors who played "The Lost Boys" characters in "Hook" that was paying tribute to Robin Williams and in a scene where there listening to a voiceover clip of Robin, a lot of them, including the actor who portrayed Rufio were either holding back tears or were in tears

there was something wrong with Castle's original idea, "what if Captain Hook survived?" J.M Barrie did write a sequel, where we learned Hook was indeed still alive. In the original, Hook was swallowed whole by the Tick-Tock Croc. Now, most people probably remember the Disney version more. Hook tried to kill Peter with a bomb, but Tinkerbell got it away just in time. In the novel & play, he poisons Peter's "medicine", and Tinkerbell -- unable to convince him not to drink it -- downs the whole glass herself. This is when Peter breaks the fourth wall and begs the audience/reader to clap if they believe in faeries, in order to save her life. In the sequel, it's explained that Hook still had a vial of the poison inside his coat when the Croc swallowed him. The vial burst, poisoning the Croc, and Hook was able to cut his way out of it's stomach
@BennyLlama39

Hook is one of my favorites! It brought back a lost memory that Peter Pan was one of my favorite books as a child. One of the reasons the action figure of Peter looked nothing like Robin Williams is from a long standing clause in his contracts that his likeness would not be used to sell merchandise. When he was invited to be in the Terry Gilliam Baron Munchausen movie as King of the Moon, his agent allowed him with the stipulation that Gilliam not “pimp his ass”-that is, don’t use Robin to sell the film. That is why you do not see his name in the credits, on any merchandise and not in the movie posters. You’ll see in the merchandise from Hook that there are no images of Peter Pan that look anything like Robin. Also, if you look closely, Dustin Hoffman visage also does not show up much in the merchandise as well. One of my favorite scenes in the film is when Captain Hook and Smee are discussing why they did not kill Peter when they first had him. It’s a lunatic scene played for laughs and I think it is one of the best parts of the film. Dustin Hoffman and Bob Hoskins were having trouble trying to figure out how to play the scene. They decided to act as if they were two old drag queens having a lovers’ quarrel. It worked beautifully!

I actually really like how it's easy to tell that Neverland is shot mostly on sound-stages. The "theme-park attraction" vibe I get from it, lends to the idea that Neverland isn't exactly "real" but is more-or-less a fantasy dreamed up by a child. I feel like - even though the events of the movie really do happen - it works with the narrative that Neverland itself is artificial because it's more-or-less meant to be "an escape" sort of. There's also a sub-narrative about fatherhood in this movie that is really interesting; the subplot with Hook trying to turn Jack against Peter is meant to be metaphorical for a Stepparent trying to alienate the Biological Parent and keep them out of the relationship. Hook does this by effectively "buying" Jack's affection, and manipulating the situation to earn his trust - in the movie he allows Jack to vent his frustrations with his father against the clocks, and not only returns his stolen baseball to him but also creates a baseball game where Jack is set-up to be the Team Hero. In the novelization, Hook goes out of his way to shower Jack with all sorts of gifts, childhood wants and fatherly attention. For example, even sets up a kind of carnival ride in the pirates village that simulates a boat-ride. He lets Jack eat all the ice-cream he can handle. All of this was meant to endear Hook to Jack rather than his own father - coupled with the fact that Neverland makes children forget their old lives. It's an interesting struggle for Peter to overcome, as it could represent the realworld situations that some fathers can find themselves in - those who devoted too much time to work, and not enough to their kids, could find their kids forever beyond their reach. Another interesting tidbit about the Novelization, is that during the final duel with Hook, Peter temporarily breaks the action, slips into the local bar and invites Hook to have a drink with him. It's a weird moment of quiet solidarity between the two old rivals, that shows how much older Pan now is, and Hook effectively can treat him like a man. It gets a brief glimpse into Hook's motivations; that the two of them have done this for so long, that he just wants it to come to an end; one way or another, he wants closure - even if he loses the fight.

Not even sort of, but exactly. Neverland is the very representation of a child's own little fantasy world, just like Fantasia in the Never-ending Story.

I love how even when you talk about a film I know really well and I think "I don't think he can come up with something I don't already know" you always do. It is an absolute testament to the level of research you go into for these videos on a regular basis, and you really should be proud of the content you put out. Just saying. :)

I worked in a movie theater when Hook came out...imagine my surprise when I found myself working for and becoming friends with Tony Swatton, who made the hook and swords. An interesting detail only barely visible in the film is a Latin inscription on the dagger used to pin the kidnapping note to the kids' door that translates as "There are no children who love me."

Bonus facts: Gwyneth Paltrow is also Steven Spielberg's Goddaughter. She turned down the female lead in Cool As Ice to do Hook, as her Dad didn't approve of Vanilla Ice. Big was written by Spielberg's sister, Anne. When he was going to direct it, he wanted Harrison Ford to play Josh, the boy in a man's body.

I think the movie goes deeper than having innocence in your older ages. Though that is one way of seeing it, perhaps it could even be the struggle to find that innocence that you know you're missing once you become aware of it. We see that in Peter's eyes when he sees his son Jack playing baseball in Neverland with the pirates. He walks away from it melancholic realizing he really did forget an important part of himself and he saw it in his son at the game. Peter and the audience see Hook encouraging Jack at the game, by which Peter starts to have the realization dawn on him.

Bang arang Rufio. It does ge cheesy at times but honestly best shot at a remake live action Peter Pan movie and it does feel like a honest sequel to the original story. The Neverland score in the movie is just beautiful. I dont know why but it always brings tears when I hear it when I'm watch the scene when Peter becomes Pan again remembering who he is flying around

One thing with Robin Williams was that he was very particular about how his image and voice were used. This was part of his dust-up with Disney over The Genie in Aladdin. That's probably one of the reasons that the action figure of Peter Pan doesn't look like Robin Williams in the movie.

It felt like suuuuuch a huge mega-scale project and it pretty much burned the name "Steven Spielberg" into my mind forever. It was also the first time i ever saw a making off on TV while the movie was just about to be released. It wasn’t a good escape fantasy because the mundane world seemed larger than the studio mock-up of Neverland. Neverland just didn’t feel as important as the real world setting. It missed entirely for that one reason.
