The Mighty Ducks was filmed at the New Hope Ice Arena in Minnesota and used the locals as extras. A bunch of us from Cooper High School and Armstrong High School were in the stands and made it into the movie. Definitely something I'll never forget. I worked at a gas station down the road, at the time, and met Emilo Estevez's dad, Martin Sheen when he stopped in late night to buy some gas.
Bro, I was from Osseo and we had shown up to play a fall, or spring league (can’t remember which) at NH Ice Arena only to find out it was canceled because they were filming some movie. We saw some kids in all black uniforms standing around, and were like who the hell are they. Turns out it was the Hawks. 😂😂😂 Great movie showcasing Minnesota hockey.
@@butsy9944 You must remember when they only had the one rink then. It wasn't until after this movie that they could afford the other rink. I don't know for sure if Disney had a role in that or not, but I always suspected they did. Me and my friends used to hang out a lot there and play at the old cement factory behind it. A lot of great memories of that place. They had a couple of arcade games on the bottom floor next to the rink.
@@ErikGenerik76 Me too, Erik. There used to be all kinds of cool bike jumps and trails back in the woods. They're all gone now. Houses are even built where the woods used to be on the other side of the tracks.
“Heavyweights” is a classic and one of my favorites from that time period. One of the best summer camp movies ever!!! It’s easy to tell that the same people made both movies and quite a few of the kids from Heavyweights were in the Mighty ducks.
Mr. baseball is actually an underrated baseball movie. The crowd and rules in japan baseball are accurate even to this day. Also, most of the 90s cliches about Japan don't feel bad. Like the goofy warm-ups are an actual thing in japan.
Mr. Baseball is my second go to baseball movie. Major League being first. Mr. Baseball is great. American ball players just laughed off the rituals the Japanese players do.
@@backyardcheapskate3469dude it's a kids movie calm down. The sandlot didn't go scout real baseball players. It sounds to me like you just liked being an asshole as a kid
@@backyardcheapskate3469I'm from Florida and loved MD 1&2, as a kid. I'm curious, what are the unwritten rules of hockey? Miracle is great movie. My favorite sports movie might be Hoosiers.
I couldn't tell you how many times I watched this movie as a kid. It was timed perfectly for me as I was myself a hockey player and the same age as the kids in the movie at the time of release. So it was playing in my house all the time.
I was in the Army when this came out. All the GI's I knew loved it as well. Fast forward a few years, I introduced it to my daughter, she loves it to this day. Oh and yes, my grandson loves it as well.
Mr. Baseball is one of favorites. I was fortunate enough to have a dad that loved movies. I don't remember which movie I watched first, but I loved them both. I probably saw them a week or two apart. Quack Quack Fam!
I was actually a big fan of the Mighty Ducks animated series and was fairly upset when it was discontinued. In my eyes, it had potential similar to the first Teen Titans animated series.
The Mighty Ducks cartoon was part of the big anthropomorphic animal superhero craze that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles started, alongside Street Sharks, Biker Mice from Mars, Avenger Penguins, The Adventures of T-REX, among many others.
Loved these growing up I loved how Bombay hated them at first as they did him but they grew a bond became a great team as well as him becoming a great coach!!!
Mr. Baseball is one of my favorite movies, in fact I love it far more than The Mighty Ducks. Growing up in California you tend to be fascinated with Japan and seek it out in popular culture, even more so as a videogame & anime nerd.
Remember the days when Disney would actually make an effort to come up with their own new movie franchise to the point of establishing an entire new hockey team based around it, and didn't just depend on pre-existing properties like Star Wars/Marvel or being as desperate as to pass off remaking all of their own beloved animated classics for live-action? Yeah, me too. When compared to the Disney of today the Mighty Ducks movies just have a whole new level of appreciation for me now.
League of their own but hockey lol major league bad news bears cool runnings all have the same story beat. But like minty sed no wholesome hockey movie til this one
I enjoyed the Disney+ series. The second season didn’t have Gordon Bombay or any of the original Ducks; but it was mostly at a hockey camp and it only basically consisted of one big game. The first season was much better because they actually played a season of hockey. I think that’s why it was cancelled.
Seeing as this movie was being filmed in Minneapolis and it's about hockey, two players from the local NHL team, the Minnesota North Stars, made a guest appearance in the movie, Basil McRae and Mike Modano. This was about two years prior to the North Stars moving to Dallas and becoming the Dallas Stars.
Great film. I remember seeing this in theatres. Man, I couldn't have been more that 11-12 year's old. Not long after I bought a mighty ducks Jersey. I wish I still had that. I think I swapped it with a boy from school for a sega game gear and a krugerrand ring, lol. I do still have the VHS. I won't get rid of that as my nan bought me it. Edit: I guess I know what film I'm watching when I get in the house this evening.😂
Didn’t Minty already do this movie? It seems like he’s done that in the last couple episodes… doing movies he’s already done. Is he running out of movies or something?
@@JR-zp3nw seems like he’s been doing that alot lately. If he’s running out of movies to do, he should do more tv shows like he was doing a few months ago… he did Married with Children and Jerry Springer. So he should do more tv shows
If anybody is wondering, in the last few years, the Anaheim Ducks have done several throwback jerseys to the Disney logo. They are available for decent prices and are awesome!
Yes, the official name of the “classic” or throwback logo, is the “Wild-wing” logo (I believe it references the team’s original mascot, named Wild-wing
Man this movie brings back all sorts of childhood memories! Growing up in Anaheim I was so excited when they made an actual hockey team where I lived! I was extremely proud that my Ducks were the first team in the West coast won the Stanley Cup! I’m still salty about the uniform change though.
I loved Mr. Baseball. Features the cinematic debut of “The Big Hurt” Frank Thomas….Never mind he had no dialogue and was on screen for maybe 30 seconds.
6:03 mr. Baseball is one of my favorite sports movies although I definitely give the edge to The mighty ducks. I usually watch it twice a year at the beginning of baseball season end at the end of the season. I usually order up some Japanese food like sushi etc and watch it.
This is an awesome movie, even today as an adult. As a point of order, the Anaheim Ducks throwback jersey is the original Mighty Ducks (NHL Team) logo! It is fun to see it in action on the ice.
this is one of those movies you watched a lot as a kid and then forgot about. but seeing tthis video all the memories came flooding in. what a time man. what a time.
As a Canadian this was my favourite movie. Finally a hockey movie for kids Too bad most people don’t realize the real hero of the movie is coach Reilly. The guy volunteered coaching peewee hockey for like 20 years. Won the championship every year but one, when Bombay missed. That’s a completely new group of kids every two years. Helped raise Bombay after his father died and is a major reason he’s a hot hit lawyer. His only flaw is he got upset with Bombay over feeling let down. Bombay on the other hand is a quitter at a young age, grows up to be a jerk. Irresponsibly drunk drives a speeding Porsche down the busy streets. Gets arrested and sent to work with kids somehow. he continues to be a bully most of the movie. First thing he does is sleep with a mother of a kid he’s coaching.
I still have a VHS tape of this movie that I recorded off Pay Per View 30 years ago. I even got to meet Shaun Weiss in Burbank last year and get his autograph. He was super cool.
As a person who is a native Minnesotan yes, we do get that cold in the winter time. And we stay that way what seems like forever. I love all three of these movies. Not only because they were filmed here but, I remember being around the same age as the kids in the movies and so that was pretty cool
Always amazing content Minty. Never forgot how much we all love you and that your joyful content lifts us up. It is a gift to us when a new video drops. Thank you.
Mr. Baseball is one of my favorite movies, but it has been forgotten. It’s got a lot of heart and functions as a great love letter to baseball. If you haven’t seen it, it’s totally worth a watch.
The reason why that movie is so nostalgic for me now in my forties is that it was a movie about bullied misfits just like I was so I was able to relate to what they were going through I just wish my son would show an interest in it so we can sit down and watch it together
How dare you!!! Mr baseball is not a movie I have seen or ever heard of, but I demand a 10 things I didn’t know about this forgotten American treasure!!! Lol great work minty. Love the content.
Awww thank you so much for this video Minty!I have so many fond memories of this movie (and trilogy) i started to listen to Queen because of it. Have afantastic day!
Though it recently was cancelled. The Disney+ show to me gets better the more you watch. I didn’t like it at first it took a little for it to click for me. Maybe it was when the cameos from the original cast that hit me in the nostalgia feels. But I know what you mean. Kind of has a slow pace the first however many episodes until I got more into it. Also loved the cartoon as a kid. Since it was so different from the movies.
I wonder how many kids this movie inspired to want to play this ridiculously expensive sport. I remember getting each piece of gear at a time over a few months.
Add on from 11:37 (reason for team name): wasn't Bombay's boss at the law firm's last name Ducksworth (and he was the guy who donated the equipment)? Also; I (barely) recall one year when the NHL had a series of commercials with 'what if' scenarios (with time reversing to show how memorable moments could have not happened). They were all pretty bad, but then fans started making much better fake ones. My favourite one was from this movie, showing the team celebrating the championship with the tag-line at the end being, "What if Bombay didn't blow over 0.08 that night?" EDIT: shocked that I managed to find it. You'll only be able to fully appreciate it if you remember the original NHL ones: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-P9u81Jq20g8.html
Love the film truely original. Oh and a special mention to Minty, it was an honor seeing u in person at London Film and comic con. Still looking Rad in those shades, awesome! Luv the channel and the top 10 facts!
I live in the US and remember watching the Mighty Duck/ D2/ D3 movies but then we also get the mexican tv channels from across the border where they also named in Spanish the movie "Los Campeones / The Champions"
"The critics said the movie was predictable." Well, how predictable of critics to say so. Great video Minty. Well done. And no, I won't argue with your comments about Mr. Baseball, but yes I did enjoy that film. Tom Selleck was quite good in it. But you're right that it is definitely not remembered like The Mighty Ducks is. See ya.
(Cough) I must with all respect MINTY leave some fact corrections about Mighty Ducks animated series and the NHL franchise: 1. 10:31 = The Disney Mighty Ducks animated series had NOTHING to do with the original MD movie(s) more then sharing the same name as Disney created and owned both. That series was a promotional franchise concept for the NHL Anaheim Mighty Ducks as Disney who owned the professional hockey team needed to boost the team's all-around awareness of existence. 2. 13:31 = Well both yes and no here. In 2005 the Anaheim Mighty Ducks was sold by Disney to the multi-millionares Samuelis who are native of Anaheim and Orange County of California, but they kept the "Mighty Ducks" name and logo up to 2006, before the start of the 2006-2007 season. They owned all rights to name and logs, but decided they wanted to rebuild the franchise with a more "classic" design. A new logo, the "D" Ducks/foot logo replaced the WildWing original logo and take away "Mighty" in the name. Also change the original colors of Jade/Purple and replace them with Orange/Black/Gold to more represent there Orange county's native colors. BUT the majority of Ducks fans wants the traditional log and in recent years that have been more brought back to various game jerseys.
That fact about the kissing scene made me laugh I can just imagine it Director: Action The actors kiss Director: Cut you can stop kissing now Emilio: We can’t
It's funny you mentioned Mr. Baseball because I also grew up watching these hockey films and only learned of Mr. Baseball thanks to my father being a Tom Selleck fan and renting that movie on VHS at Blockbuster.
Obligatory “How dare you, I love Mr. Baseball!” I do, but don’t blame you for not. I saw almost all of those movies you mentioned when I was a kid and have all the nostalgia for them. Thanks for making this!
As a kid, the 3 mighty ducks films were the only films my primary school had. We must have watched those films at least 5 times a year, each. Those were literally the only tapes the school had.
Im pretty sure the Mighty Ducks Game Changers series had also been cancelled and was on of those show recently removed from Disney + to avoid paying royalties etc
It has been canceled and taken off Disney+ but it might have been before the strikes. The second season was actually good, at least as a hockey player who could relate to some of the things happening at the camp. The problem it had was not having Bombay in it as Estevez wouldn’t get vaccinated and filming happened during Covid.
Watched this when I was 12 living in South America and wanted to play ice hockey so bad! Moved to london and took ice hockey lessons ! Showed my son this movie couple summers ago, this and the sandlot ! Great movies
I live just outside of Minneapolis, and yes it gets crazy cold in the winter, but our summer days break the 90's and the 100's, so its crazy on both levels
I was about the same age as the kids in this movie... It made me want to play hockey. I had rollerblades, a hockey stick, and my own net, but was too poor to play in an organization, or with other kids.
I forgot what movie I was going to see that was sold out, but I wish I could go back in time in thank the theater manager for recommending this movie. I saw both sequels in theaters as well.
*I believe they were called the Ducks because they were being sponsored by Mr. Ducksworth who was Gordon Bombay's employer at the time. The ducks fly together quote was just a spin by Bombay to get the team on board with the idea.
Huge fan of The Mighty Dicks. I remember the 2nd one came out and helped popularized roller blading. I too attempted roller hockey and every kid was trying to do the knuckle puck. Roller hockey is very dangerous lol.
