My girlfriend actually bought me a coffee mug with a cartoonized version of Fezzik on it and it had the text Anybody Want A Peanut? on it. That's how I know I have a keeper.
I played in a death metal band a few years ago and when I told our bass player that he looked like Andre, he said "Anybody want a peanut?". Lol cracks me up every time I think about it

There was a TV commercial made a couple of years ago in which Carey Elwes is answering every request from his daughter (real or actress, I don't know) with the line "As you wish." Cute stuff. I introduced my daughter to this movie several years ago and she absolutely loved it. To this day, if either of us mentions someone or something, real or fictional, that is dead, the other will invariably ask "Is it completely dead or just mostly dead? 'Cause mostly dead is slightly alive!" Usually a line about going through pockets looking for loose change is sure to follow. BTW, in Carey Elwes' book about making The Princess Bride, he notes that Billy Crystal and Carol Kane improvised lines for three days and that Mandy Patinkin had to work so hard stifling his laughter that he sprained the muscles in his ribs. There's an entire section of the book dedicated to Andre the Giant. His size tended to intimidate people, even on a subconscious level, and Elwes noted that he would deliberately say and do things to put people at ease, such as calling people he spoke to 'boss'. Wallace Shawn was (and likely still is) deathly afraid of heights, even when on the prop cliff face and feared he wouldn't be able to complete the scene and thus the movie. Andre would always reassure Shawn that he would keep him safe and would not let him fall, which Shawn credits as having made it possible to film the Cliffs of Insanity scene. When making this movie, Andre suffered from back problems and at times could barely move. For the scene with the white horses, Andre had to be lowered onto his horse, both because of his back and because it was feared he would unwittingly injure the horse if he mounted the saddle. A stunt double rides it through the gate. His doctor worked with him for his pain and had surgery scheduled for his back after the movie, but during filming had okeyed Andre to self-medicate by drinking alcohol, which he did in legendary quantities. In one incident, Andre passed out in a hotel lobby while trying to make it back; the staff knew they could never move him, so they set up divider ropes around him and put a blanket over him so no one would bother him until he woke. After that, a police officer was assigned to keep an eye on him, not out of any malice, but to ensure that he wouldn't pass out and thus make it home. He would stay in the background, accompanying Andre from bar to bar, and Andre would often send a drink or two his way as a thank you for his trouble. Andre Rene Roussimoff passed away in January 1993 from congestive heart failure at the age of 46. Rest In Peace, and forever dream of large women.

haha. Once, I was doing an online movie quiz and you try to break other friend's records of how many correct in a row you can get. One time, I was over 140 correct answers and the question came up, "What does ROUS stand for in the Princess Bride" and I picked obviously, Rodents of Unusual Size. And it said INCORRECT and broke my streak, it said it was RATS of unusual size. I about lost my shit... no, actually I did lose my shit for about 14hrs, in spurts, lol

Every time I watch the "As You Wish" documentary; the part where Mandy Patinkin talks about Andre's on-set interview when they asked what he enjoyed most about it and he replied,"Nobody looks at me." and showed how good he felt just being one of the guys and not a freak to be gawked at gets me misty eyed.

I saw this movie twice in the theatre when it first came out. No one at my school had heard of it so I had no one to discuss it with. So, I took my friend to see it, too. I was so happy when it came to be loved by so many.

Today though, millennials like Minty and all of these 90s kids who love everything from your and my childhood in the 80s all worship this movie, and unfortunately lump it in with their disgusting "geek culture" idiocy.
I wish I'd seen it in theater. I saw it 5 years later on TV. But I have gone to see it a couple times at theaters that show classic movies, so awesome. Its funny to talk movies with other guys and they ask what's my fave and I'm like "The Princess Bride" and they look at me like I'm gay, lol. But those that have seen it, back me up. Others that haven't seen it, also think I just said, "The Princess Diaries" and still look at me weird, lol.
SocialMoth One day, on my way home from work, I was barred from my neighbourhood due to a transformer fire. I had no where to go so I went to the theatre by myself and saw The Princess Bride. I loved it so much I took all my friends to see it. As soon as it came out on VHS I bought a copy. My friends and I used to play a game, we'd call each other at work and quote a line, the person would have to say the next line then call another friend for the next line. Yes, we had boring office jobs. Some days we'd get stuck but other days we'd get through the whole movie.
I saw it three times in the theater, and couldn't get my family to go. Read the book, bought the soundtrack, and it was a long time before I had anyone to talk to about it. Blank looks whenever I mentioned it. My sister 'discovered' it years later. Aaagh.
Cary Elwes book 'As You Wish' about the making of the film is a must for anyone who loves the film...it makes it even more special...10 things just aren't enough to show what a life changing experience the film was for all involved.

What I always liked was how TPB thumbs its nose at the fairytale formula. The pirate is the hero, the princess is a peasant, and the prince is the villain. All I remember thinking is, "Tell me more!" 😊
I love that you put up and talk about all these movies well known and not well known. Thank you for this one in particular it’s my favorite move of all time. I saw it 7 times in the theater.
My brother -- who was in university and living in another province when I was in elementary school, so we didn't really have much of a relationship until later on in adulthood -- actually made a point of calling home to tell me to go see this movie. Apparently his girlfriend had dragged him to see it and he was really impressed, and figured that I (avid reader of all things fantasy, horror, sf, etc.) would like it. He was right. He was really, really right. :-)
I like that. Maybe he can unknowingly help Buttercup's child in some way...like some kind of unknown link that will always connect the group in some way. I just don't know how they can make the movie without the Giant. He's not easily replaced.
The "sequel" is largely a joke and was intended to just annoy Ballantine Books and flood them with mail. The excuse for it not getting made is that Stephen King, who is of Florinese descent (of which Florin is absolutely not a real country) blocked it because he wanted to be the one who "abridged" Buttercup's Baby, which is a Florinese text, like the Princess Bride was by legendary Florinese author S. Morgenstern. I highly recommend the book, all the asides about what Goldman "cuts out" of his abridgement are pretty funny. The cuts are the reason the Florinese government is more willing to work with Stephen King.
@@aimeemariet Did you ever read "Marathon Man"? I saw Princess Bride, but I never read the book. I saw both the Film and read the Book- "Marathon Man" and they were both great. Slightly different ending in the Book. Obviously, a very different type of work than The Princess Bride which is made for KIds and Big Kids while Marathon Man is defintely not for Kids.
Another perfectly cast movie! Couldn’t imagine it any other way. In a documentary about Andre it was stated that he thoroughly enjoyed being in the film and would repeatedly show it to anyone who would sit still for it.
My favorite thing about this movie is Patinkin and Elwes became so good at fencing, their sword fight scene they choreographed themselves and improv'd most of it.
When I was a kid the main reason that I watched this movie was that Andre the Giant was in it. Now I can almost quote the entire movie line for line and I'm still not tired of watching it.
My cousin loved Princess bride when we were kids. I avoided it because I thought it was a girls movie. As time passed I heard more and more people talking about it so I finally sat down and watched it. I was immediately at myself for ignoring the princess bride. I loved it and I couldn't believe that how much fun it was. I now own the movie and have passed it down to my son. I was not going to let him get away with out watching it. Princess bride is not a girls movie as I lead myself to believe. It's the smallest epic movie ever made and maybe one day my son can pass it on to his his kids.
My #1 favorite movie. I didn't even see the movie til 1992, and it was on TV(with commercials) but as I was watching, I was hooked and I searched everywhere I could to find a VHS copy. It took a few months and luckily I found it in another state as I was visiting my relatives for the Thanksgiving, I was barely 17 and had just started dating my wife-to-be. So, instead of watching it once I got it, I decided to give it to her(my gf) for Christmas. I had to wait over a month to watch it in it's entirety. She loved it, of course :)
When I was 10 in the 4th grade, on the last day of school, the teacher let me bring a tape of this movie and she played it for the class. They all loved it. I was a hero that day.

When my wife and I were doing birthing classes for my youngest, they gave all the future parents the "Hello, my name is..." name tags. You guessed it: Inigo Montoya. There wasn't enough room for the rest of the line, so in small letters at the bottom: "Prepare to be born".

One day I was watching TMZ and the cameraman was outside a hotel. At the same time, Jerry Springer and Mandy Patinkin walk out. Everyone runs up to Jerry to ask questions but only TMZ went up to Mandy. My heart broke when I saw this but Mandy gave a great interview. Just goes to show that here in the states you don't have to have any talent to be popular to the masses. My childhood was altered in a big way by this film and I'm glad you posted this video. Me and my friends are in this movie. Some of it was filmed not far from Sheffield and I was part of a 100 years war reenactment society with connections to the university. Although I personally never made the cut many of the others did and can be seen in the forest crowds as the brute squad tries to clear it before the wedding.
My God...I knew about Mandy thinking he was killing the cancer that took his father...but I didn't know he got so into it that he stabbed the 6 Fingered Man for real!

About time you did the princess bride. One of my all time favorite movies. Funnily I avoided it when I was very young cause I thought it was for girls. Lol finally watched it when I was 10 yo or so. And immediately felt dumb for judging it by the cover and name. Probably one of the first examples of how something can appear one way and be something else in my life. Maybe that's why it sticks out so much to me. Or it's just cause its o e of the best movies/books ever. I've read both the cut down version that was made into the movie and the original one with all the way in depth details about the food they are eating.
About 22 years ago. my two friends and I had a weekly video movie night. After doing a month's worth of Shakespeare movies, I decided to change the routine at the last minute and we all piled into the car to make a pizza/video run to BlockBuster. I wanted my video selection to be a surprise; so, they actually had no idea what I was looking for and thought it interesting that I did not find the video at BlockBuster. We travelled to two stores and one Mom/Pop video rental. Nobody that night had it. By then, I was amusingly frustrated and told my two friends that The Princess Bride was my video choice for the evening. Both Ira and Susie laughed hard at my failure to rent the video with Susie mimicing Vizzini "Inconceivable!". My birthday present from them was the VHS tape and the paperback. I would then watch the tape on my birthdays until I got the DVD version to continue my personal tradition.

I saw an interview with Mandy Patkin where he recalled how terrified he was of the 20/30 foot height they had to do for filming climbing the Cliffs of Insanity and Andre told him "I'll protect you" and made sure he wasn't scared. Thanks for mentioning the injuries Carey received. I read about them in his auto, "as you wish" about filming on the movie. The doctor who received him for a second injury was like "what are they doing to you there?"
#1 Something SUPER important Minty overlooked was that the novel The Princess Bride has a fictional backstory created by William Goldman. In the prologue, he states that this is merely an adaptation (only the best parts) of the the older "original" novel by S. Morgenstern, who was supposed to be a native of the non-existent country of Floren, where the novel is set. He also includes a brief lesson on the history of Floren and Guilder (which were actually the names of medieval Dutch and Danish coins) as well as how Morgenstern's original version was meant to be an allegory for this history. To hammer home all this world-building, in a later anniversary reprint, he included in the epilogue that there was a "lost chapter" discovered, and he was in a legal battle with Morgenstern's estate for the rights to publish it. So when he says Stephen King is preventing a sequel from being written, it's in the context of this expansion pack.
I will never forget the cold windy night in Billings, Montana that me and a a big group of friends , all went to go see the movie...and none of us knew what we were in for...it was a magical movie, that had us all talking for hours about how great it was and how much fun it was to watch, as we all sat around a big table at the 24 hour restaurant we all went to afterwards.
I like Princess Bride alot. I first saw it at s friend's house. Then I showed it to my mom. She liked Peter Faulk in it. Good memories, Minty. Take care.

I remember back in 9th grade ('84-'85) English Lit. class reading this. Not the book, but the play, with everyone in class taking turns with the different characters. I loved it then and was delighted when the movie came out.
I love hearing about how Rob Reiner was freaked our about how a Jon Gotti told him "You killed my father. Prepare to die" only to followed by how he loved Princess Bride.
Another injury: Andre let Cary drive his four wheeler, and Cary ran over his own foot. He was in a lot of pain while shooting the scene where he is interrogating Robin's character as the Masked Man. Watch it again and you'll notice
Minty back in the day my sister was obsessed with this movie and we both enjoy it still. I loved Andre the Giant's performance and all the action. I think my sister was more into the love story LOL! Great video and I will defiantly cannot wait to share your video with her as I know she will be happy to hear about it's sequel. I hope they can get it done!
The princess Bride doesn't need a sequel and is perfect as a standalone film. Also to anyone who is interested; Cary Elwes wrote a book called "As You Wish: inconceivable tales from the making of the princess Bride."
I thought I was the only one who liked this movie? When it first came out it was hardly known by anyone in my area until very much later on, and I discovered it by accident around 2002 when I stumbled upon a DVD. I fell in love with it almost immediately because of the ingenious lines and punchlines. The fencing scenes between Patinkin and Elwes was of course a run away winner.
