James Bond has only ever been one character played by a few actors. If you know the films, that theory does not hold up. George Lazenby saying “this never happened to the other fellow” does not count. He’s referring to Prince Charming.
One of the best 90s action movies. Made back in the day when everyone didn't hate Michael Bay, Nicholas Cage was a bona fide movie star and Sir Sean was still alive. Great music too (shared the same composer as MGS2)
@@fattiger6957 it's funny because I made a metal gear playlist for the later entries with music from this movie. Except the tunnel music, that one I saved fir the RE4 remake
One of my favorite movies of all time. Not only do I think it's just a fun action-packed movie, it also delivers heavy nostalgia for me. I remember seeing it as a teenager back in the mid-90s. The good ole' days! I really wish they would get this one on 4K Blu-ray as I would instantly purchase it.
The Rock is the only Michael Bay movie that is both critically & financially success. It also cemented Nicolas Cage's action movie creditons. "I am Stanley Goodspeed." " But of course you are." Are just some of the classic lines spouted in this action epic which had its movie premiere at its movie namesake The Rock. The end credits acknowledge Producer Don Simpson who passed away during production.
It's full of great lines, like when Cage complains to Connery about the twitching body whilst trying to defuse the missile and Connery responds "What do you want me to do. Kill him again?".
My family lived in San Francisco at that time and my father had run a metaphysical bookstore since the 60s. He's name was Stanley Goodspeed. He was quite a character and I always wondered how his name ended up in the movie.
Agreed. I always thought it was a strange name to be invented by a writer but it sounds like one of the writers saw it and took a liking to it. Makes sense now.
One of my personal favourites, and one of the best pure action movies of all time. To this day I still quote "The Shower Room" scene and Sean Connery's "Losers always whine about their best." speech. One correction though. John Mason id's himself as British SAS not MI6
It's a great action movie, full of thrills and black humour. I visited Alcatraz in 1993, just two years before this was filmed there so it brings back memories. Weirdly you can tell the scenes that Clement and La Frenais rewrote for Connery as the dialogue just seems different ("Some sniper will get his arsch" 😂). Cage doesn't seem to take himself too seriously and It's got a terrific Hans Zimmer score. I also think Ed Harris nearly steals this film from the two leads. This was made right at the beginning of Michael Bay's career and is one of the more watchable films of his back catalogue. His over use of filters and tracking shots was probably influenced by Tony Scott. Incidentally did you know that Bay is related to Leonard Nimoy?
"Dodging Gang Rape in the showers. Although that happens less these days. Maybe I'm losing my sex appeal" was one of theirs. Jerry Bruckheimer was actually impressed by them so much that he retained them as dialog polishers on his next films. They even wrote a draft of Bad Boys 2, set in London!
Another great bit of dialogue is when Mason and Goodspeed are locked in their cells. Mason is already working his way out via a stripped down mattress he's turned into a rope whilst Goodspeed goes through a speech that ends in"How in the.name of Zeus's butthole did you get out of your cell?", The door suddenly opens and Mason suddenly appears and says something like "trade secrets old chap, trade secrets" leaving Stanley none the wiser. The film is full of eminently quotable bits of dialogue.
I saw this movie twice in one week when I was in the military I liked it so much. My cohorts and I laughed at how the Marines were depicted. So sensationalized.
It's so surreal to think I've walked the grounds of Alcratraz when I was 17 years old while I was on Holiday in San Francisco. Everything about the prison was so exciting to me but knowing it's history before hand made my experiences even better. It's these biases that I have is why I love movies set in Alcratraz. The Rock is a sensational flick and it is one of my greatest movies.and anyone who has yet to experience it must see it.
So many Nick Cage action movies (that I love) came out around that time… The Rock; Face Off, Con Air, Gone in 60 seconds… Great time for the action genre!
The Rock is one of those movies that operates best as a standalone. Now, you can play with the sequel element like they did, but you can't call it "The Rock 2" or have it associated at all with The Rock since it won't have anything to do with Alcatraz. That would lose the name appeal for a follow up. And if you think about it, National Treasure 2 could easily be viewed as The Rock 2. "Somehow Hummel survived" and takes them all on a merry chase of cat and mouse as they have to solve puzzle after puzzle to get to the treasure (or unlock a secret from the microfilm).
The Rock. Terminator. The Wizard of Oz. A New Hope. Back to the Future. The Fellowship of the Ring. Movies I've Re-watched a ridiculous amount of times and never get tired of seeing again. Make of that what you will. I've enjoyed every time and will again until the day I die. I'm enjoying it and not doing anyone else any harm while I do it so pretty much innocent fun all the way.
Personally, I've had sequel burnout for years. So, in my grumpy opinion, it's better that this movie stands on its own. I have always loved this movie! This is probably the Nicholas Cage performance I most identify with, so it has a special place in my heart.
I've been to Alcatraz many times and have direct they dark night there. The fog made it that much more darker and scarier. One of the main reasons I can't rise with a great prison is the inmates could hear people partying from shore answer Francisco. It must have been torture to be hearing so many people having so much fun but to be locked up at the same time.
On the Bond theory if you watch On Her Majesty's Secret Service, George Lazenby's Bond is after Sean Connery's Bond and in the movie he says "the other guy never had this problem". Which make me wonder if The Rock happened after Connery's last Bond movie and MI5 Disavowed Connery's Bond and hired another and 007 and the name Bond became a codename used by loads of different men
It's a reference to Prince Charming in Cinderella. The codename doesn't make any sense as Bond himself has used cover names on missions, he has the same relationships with the MI6 staff and Felix Leiter, and there are several references for the different actors who played Bond mourning their dead wife Tracy. If Bond is a codename, then so must every character who's been played by different actors. E.g. Blofeld, Moneypenny, Leiter. Charles Gray played a MI6 agent who is killed in You Only Live Twice but he faked his own murder and came back as Blofeld Incarnation 5 in Diamonds Are Forever? Actor recasting's happen all the time, and it's just accepted. No one's ever said that Rachel Dawes in The Dark Knight Trilogy is a codename, as she was played by Katie Holmes in Batman Begins and Maggie Gyllenhaal in The Dark Knight.
@@davidjames579 I was just talking about What Bond said in On Her Majesty's Secret Service not characters spanning the whole Film franchise. And what does Batman have to do with Sean Connery or The Rock. I was not talking about people playing the same character just one phrase from one movie and putting forward a theory which makes sense to me (and possible to others).
@@jakabames "007 and the name Bond became a codename used by loads of different men". That's not just Lazenby's comment. That's the Codename Theory. The only reason different men are Bond is because it's recasting's. The characters aren't supposed to be seeing the character as looking different, same reason no one thought Rachel Dawes in Batman had changed. She hadn't to the characters.
@@davidjames579 it is though. Lazenby said that comment in the movie. And his Bond was after Connery's Bond. And I have no idea why you keep mentioning Rachel Dawes from Batman because that has nothing to do with this theory (with the Bond movies or The Rock). I know that Katie's and Maggie's Rachel is the same character. But with Bond, there has always been the theory that they are different people. This goes all the way back to Casino Royale with David Niven.
Now let's drop this otherwise we'll end up going in circles. I was commenting on a video I was watching and just saying to Minty what I thought. Not to get into an argument with someone else. End of subject, please.
Totally superb action film with actors, awesome action, perfect chemistry with all these actors & the story plot was famously superb in every way imaginable! I wished there was a sequel but nothing became of it! Jim Greszczuk
The Rock is one of my all time FAVORITE movies 😊 so many AMAZING actors in this one movie, and Sean Connery and Nicholas Cages chemistry is top notch 😁 i could go on and on about this movie lol... just one of the best all around !!!!
spent many hours and had fun exploring the Island when I was in the Coast Guard. We maintained the Lighthouse, fog signals and navigation lights around the island so we got to go everywhere. Even got a tour of the off limits catacombs
Nicholas Cage's line delivery cadence is awesome. Not to mention the following line. "How in the name of Zeus's butthole, did you get out pf your cell?"
I was chatting away on IRC one day (early internet chat) and I kept hearing explosions, so after a while, I called a friend up and asked him if he heard the explosions and he was all "Oh yeah, they're filming a movie about Sean Connery on Alcatraz!"
The film was dedicated in loving memory of producer Don Simpson who passed away short after production. R.I.P. Sean Connery O.B.E. aka Bond ...James Bond 007
I feel very similar to you on this one. A bit silly at times but a lot of fun. This had some terrific actors and interactions. I always link this to movies like demolition man, cliffhanger and the specialist because it a movie of its era. Another great movie that was a favourite of mine at the time.
Oh man.. one of my personal top10... is a fun movie to watch, the chemistry between Cage and Connery are the best, the villans too... such great actors
One and done the film is a classic. One of my favorite action films of all time. The whole cast was amazing especially Nic and Sean Connery. RIP Sean. Great video Minty always enjoy them. Remember seeing the film in theaters as a young kid lol with my parents.
The Rock is one of my favorite movies, so many quotable lines in it, "I sh!t you not"' Still Clint Eastwood film ed two movies there, 'Escape from Alcratraz' and the Dirty Harry movie, 'The Enforcer'. @Minty, Maybe you can do a 10 things episode about those two movies as well.
Love the, "Leave your brain at the door" comment. It really is what I want to do after a hard day at work. Just watch something where I don't have to think and let Hollywood entertain me. I'm definitely glad there wasn't a sequel as this usually spoils the original. Good video Minty.
There's little in the film that outright rules out the possibility that Capt JPM was Bond under an alias. So its still a fun, harmless theory. Then there was the interview given by Sir Sean some time after the film released wherein he confessed that he played Mason as though he WAS an elder, retired Bond. So...that's good enough for me 😎
Fun Fact, Minty. The Rock and Armageddon are actually linked not only by Bay, but by the actor who played the President in both films. The movies are called the President Anderson Duology. A president that had to deal with a Terror Threat and a world ending crisis all in one term of office.
this is a fun movie one of my favorite lines from goodspeed is where he says "why dont we say we cut the chit chat" when he is talking to sean connery which honestly is kinda comical
My dad's friend John Laughlin(or McLaughlin, goes by both) played General Petersen in this film. Supposedly he sent a shirt for me before I was born from the set of Footloose. I hope my mom finds it someday.
Honestly Connery's demands werent unreasonable. Spending a minimum hour of travel everyday would have been super inconvenient. And making your dialog more believable is always a good idea.
WOW!, this is my first time knowing about the James Bond Theory of The Rock. The many times watching this movie, I never thought about Sean Connery's Rock character being James Bond with a different identity, LOL but a clever theory no doubt.
It was such an amazing experience going to watch this movie at the theater as a kid, I was blown away and it was my favorite movie at the time. Today it still holds a special place in my heart and it is still a fun movie to watch even after watching it dozens of times.
I agree Minty, I’m not a big Michael Bay fan but the Rock was good. And with Nick Cage is a really good actor but his movies are Hit or Miss. This one was definitely a Hit.
After watching this movie, I always wanted a sequel to the Navy SEAL movie. Primarily because I loved Michael Bien in this movie. He has been one of my favorite actors since Aliens.
Yes, one of the few (if not only) good (nay, GREAT) Michael Bay films. A few others were...ok(?), but this one was really a lot of fun. Granted, had I known what SF would turn out to be like today, I would've rooted a lot stronger for Ed Harris to just blow it up.
