*Correction Stallone said he saw Hulk Hogan on TV Wrestling but it wasn't Wrestle Mania as that show didn't exist in 1982. Sorry for any inconveniences!
I'm glad you posted a comment correcting this because as soon as you said it I was like, wait a minute, Rocky 3 came out a few years before WM and before Hogan even became champion. In fact, I bet you'll get a ton of wrestling fans immediately commenting about Hogan getting fired for taking the part. And he actually didn't come back to the WWF/WWE until a couple of years later when Vince McMahon bought the company from his dad. Any little error when it comes to wrestling and you can be sure that we wrestling fans will catch it right away.
Yeah. He was really upset because Adrian was off in Clubber's apartment balling him. It probably took her two hours just to get all that fuckin' gold off him for 2 minutes of sex. Clubber: Come here woman!! Adrian: Hold on, gotta get your gold off. Okay, let's go!! Clubber: UUUNGHHH!!! Damn that was good!!! Adrian: That's it? I pity you fool.
That's right. Rocky was spending an entire day feeling sad over the death of his manager Mickey. Then when Rocky enters into his old neighborhood boxing gym, he hits a small punching bag to release his steam. Then a mysterious voice says, "that's not the way to punch it." A petrified Rocky turns around and asks who's there. And then, ta-da, Apollo is seen standing in the entrance dressed like a million bucks. And the rest is history.
I met Mr. T many years ago when I worked at Office Depot in Encino California. He was such a down to Earth awesome guy. I told him how much I loved all the work he did, and how awesome he is. He warmly shook my hand, thanked ME, and said "It's good to meet you brother"!!! I was blown away by this. He is simply a class act.
There's a lot of great lines. Interviewer:"Do you accept the challenge from Rocky Balboa?" Clubber:" I reject the challenge because Balboa is no challenge, but I'll be glad to beat up on him some more! " 🤣🤣🤣
Unless you saw Rocky 3 when it first came out, you don’t realize what a force Mr T was. Later he became a household name and did children’s tv shows, but in ROCKY, before we knew him, he was scary!
@@england641 I never watched WWF, so Rocky 3 was MY introduction to Mr T…and it made the movie more enjoyable because I didn’t know who he was. That’s all I was saying, no need to get hostile.
Eye Of The Tiger was also Hulk Hogan's theme music for a while in WWF. I used to listen to it also when I was working out as a teen. You're The Best would have been a good song for Lionheart or Bloodsport starting Jean-Claude Van Damme
Same experience. When they finish the ten count on Clobber Lang and he's officially out, the audience burst out into spontaneous applause. It was wildly satisfying because, crazy as it sounds in 2020, at that moment in the theatre of 1982, it wasn't a certainty Rocky was going to win the rematch so it was tense the entire three round bout going through the up and down, rope a dope, rollar coaster ride of emotions where it was going and how it would all end. Now, with the benefit of hindsight, it seems obvious and a foregone conclusion, but back then, the rulebook of cinematic character arch's and screenwriting laws 101 was still being cemented in real time.
First movie I remember seeing in a theater and my favorite Rocky movie of all time. The crowd was definitely into it. What I would do to go back to watch it again in 1982!
... Well , You Know... After All These Years, Sylvester Stallone & E.T. Have Overcome Their Rivalry / Grudge, And Are Now Good Friends... In Fact, E.T. is gonna be in THE EXPENDABLES 4
Blasphemy! Where else do you see Hammer Head and Greedo from Star Wars kill each other. Oh yea, Yoda was on earth too. He was looking for Luke, who was last seen driving a souped up Corvette Sting Ray.
Hogan was actually fired by Vince sr for taking this role and went to awa and his popularity exploded after the film came out and when Vince jr took over wwf he hired Hogan back
@cpk1994 Vern Gagne was a fool imagine Hulkamania in the AWA, that federation wouldn't have folded, and who knows what the WWF would've became without Hogan?
Also , 80s was great childhood and then a teen and young adult in the 90s I feel like so much happened our lifetime I often think we are in that Matrix simulation
I liked the story of Rocky III: exploring how Rocky had "gone soft" in being a celebrity, and that he had to get his edge back. It was actually quite realistic when you look at the lives of many professional athletes.
Apollo Creed Quote: Now, when we fought, you had that eye of the tiger, man; the edge! And now you gotta get it back, and the way to get it back is to go back to the beginning. Classic line. This was the last Burgess Meredith Rocky film in which his character passes, very sad.
No one seems to realize that when Clubber Lang pushed Mickey he caused his heart attack. So basically that mohawk, gold chain wearing freak committed murder. "Shut up old man!!!" Talk about ageism. Where the fuck are the Liberals when you need them?
Yea, because Apollo wanted Lane beat because he didnt like him. Since at the time Apollo was retired he couldnt do it himself. Him and Rocky did become friends after but he first did it because he wanted Lane beat lol
Rocky 3 was a film where many people saw Apollo Creed in a different light. He was no longer the flamboyant, fast talking Boxing champ who lured Rocky into fighting him a few times. People began to see Apollo as a changed man who decides to put his hotshot image behind him and lend a hand to become Rocky's trainer in an effort to help him regain the World Heavyweight title from Clubber Lang.
I always liked the scene where you see Carl Weathers turn around while sprinting and runs backwards while staying ahead of Rocky. This showed his NFL training as a defensive back. I didn’t know if many boxers learn to run backwards at such speed, but that is what defensive backs do most of the time. They have to be able to keep up with sprinting NFL receivers dashing down the field while running backwards to watch the QB and where the pass may be going. Carl Weather was a linebacker for the Oakland Raiders during the 1970s, where he only played 7 games before being released and moving to Canada to play for the BC Lions until 1973. Though he wasn’t a major star in the NFL, his training as a defensive end in college and a linebacker in pro got him in shape to play the iconic role as heavyweight boxer Apollo Creed in 4 Rocky movies before they killed off his character in Rocky 4.
Didn't know that. Thanks bro. That means that Carl Weather got some mad skills. In my opinion NFL receivers and defensive backs are among the fastest athletes in the world.
@@brucedavis3816 I got you bro. Even though I never played, I was a NFL fan for a long time and the speed of those guys is impressive. Even the cameras can barely catch them.
I do remember hearing that the loss of Stallone's son took such a great toll on him so bad that even Schwarzenegger pushed Stallone to keep busy while filming The Expendables 2.
I do like the Creed movies Creedll made me feel for Drago and his son the hatred for anything Rocky was all because Briggett Nielson abandoned them then she abandoned them again
Rocky III was a great movie. Rocky also got smart and miraculously was healed from his eye injury from the last movie. Apollo remarks in their last match that Rocky had the "Eye of the Tiger", but when you watch Rocky II he looks somewhat timid. Stallone, Mr. T, and Carl Weathers put on a great performance; Stallone did look ripped in the movie. And "Eye of the Tiger" was huge - it was a perfect compliment to the movie.
I was in third grade when this movie opened. My dad took me to see it in the theatre and the movie was my favorite. Even as a child though the hot chicks in the red swimsuits that were on the side of thunderlips is what I remember the most. OMG how they had super bodies not anorexic like todays girls but shapely. Thing were diffrent in the eighties for sure. They would be considered fat today.
Rocky 3 came out in 1982, but the first Wrestlemania wasn't until 1985. How could Stallone have seen Hogan on Wrestlemania three or four years before it began????????? Maybe Minty misspoke and just meant some other televised wrestling event.
@@d_dizzie_druck5753 in fact, that's how I caught the error. when he mentioned WrestleMania I thought that he said before the year 1982 and I was aware of that Wrestlemania started sometime in the mid-eighties
ROCKY 3 was in 1982 Wrestlemania was in 1985 Hulk Hogan did not battle Andre the Giant for a title pre1985. Hulk Hogan in 82 was a villain wrestler before he went All American Patriot in 84 after Bob Baklund lost his WWF title to the Iranian Iron Sheik. Hulk Hogan became a good guy in 84 after winning the WWF HW title against The Iron Sheik in 84 to then be congratulated by Andre the Giant.
Actually, in 1980 Hulk Hogan did fued against Andre The Giant. Only at that time Hogan was the Heel (with Freddy Blassie as his manager) and Andre was the babyface.
Hulk and Andre did have a match before Wrestlemania III. Hulk was a heel managed by Freddie Blassie and Andre was a face. They had a big match at Shea Stadium.
Hogan had also ended his initial run with the WWF around 1980 and wrestled in Japan and for the AWA. He returned to the WWF around 1983, largely due to the exposure from this movie, and remained there for most of the remaining decade. But had Hogan ignored this role, he might not have been as big of a wrestler as he became.
He was also fired by McMahon Sr. over the role, which is why he went to the AWA instead of returning to the WWF. McMahon felt it was breaking kayfabe. Because of the film, Hogan was making a killing on merchandising the "Hulkamania" gimmick, but the head of the AWA couldn't agree to merchandise royalties with Hogan, and by then McMahon jr was in charge of the WWF and knew whomever had Hogan would be the dominant wrestling promotion in the country and stole him away back to the WWF for 1984 and the rest is history.
Stallone was actually watching Hogan vs Andre the Giant in Shea Stadium when he got the idea for using him as Andre was in the Six Million Dollar Man and was going to be in the next Conan movie with Arnold.
@@michaelkaminski84 you could also argue that Hogan in Rocky III was the catalyst and main reason so many WWE stars today get to be in some big time movies, and are even ENCOURAGED by WWE to do big time Hollywood movies. Beginning in the early 2000s, the WWE even started to openly promote movies that starred their wrestlers. Crazy to think that Terry Bollea got in trouble with Vince McMahon Sr. over wanting to play a part in Rocky III. The Miz, Steven Austin, John Cena, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and so many more owe quite a bit of thanks to Hulk Hogan methinks. He paved the way for sure.
Clubber Lang is the one opponent who never really gets to redeem himself. Drago was a tool for Russian propaganda, and Tommy Gunn was led astray by an overzealous promoter, but Lang was just a jerk from Chicago, and that is all you get to know about him.
He's a prima Donna no doubt, hence why he fuck'd up the character as Judge Dredd by taking off the iconic helmet that the judge wore and never took off b'cuz getting top biling wasn't enough, so he had to let people see his mug... But he's kinda a'ight in my book.
Wrestlemania did not exist at the time of Rocky III, in fact it is the opposite that is true. The success of Rocky III made Hogan's stock grow, and wrestling promoter Vince McMahon used it to make the first Wrestlemania in 1985
Looking at this today, if Mr. T wasn’t in this movie it would’ve never been what it was. A film is only as good as it’s villain Mr. T as “Clubber” was excellent.
How the hell did Stallone complete that workout and still have energy to act and direct a movie?! If I attempted half of that work out, I’d be done for the rest of the week.
I saw ROCKY III at the cinema in Wellington, NZ as a kid, with my parents. During the rematch fight between Rocky & Lang, I was kicking the seat in front of me the whole time lol 🥊 #WinRockyWin
Mr T got a slap from his mum when he took her to the premiere of this movie at the part when he says to Adrian if you want to see a real man come to my apartment tonight and I'll show you a real man! True thing! 😂
Tony Jax Not surprising. Mr T always championed respecting your mother and women in general. Many years later he continued this as he even had a rap album produced by ICE-T that had a track called “Treat Your Mother Right.
muzik dude I think Mr T improvised ALL his lines through the whole movie. Think about it, Stallone wrote the movie, but in no other work that he’s done has another character talked like that. Contrast that with Tarantino where lots of his characters sound like pulp fiction.
Minty mentions that in the video. Worked out for both movies in the end. Don't you think? Interestingly John Avildsen directed both the original Rocky and The Karate Kid. 😋
That's something I didn't know until i saw this. I'm glad they didn't use it for Rocky 3. It fits much better in Karate Kid. All these years later I can't picture either movie done with different songs.
I read Mr Ts autobiography. He was actually physically sick, he said Stallone was extremely strict regarding training and diet. He also said Stallone packed one helluva punch and actually hurt him during the sparring. Stallone wanted T for Rocky 4, and was gitted T asked too high a price.
He wasn’t sick and actually With the first fight when stallone gets knocked out! That was a real punch! And mr.t had to do strict dieting and training to get into real good shape for the movie z!
This is my favorite ROCKY film alongside ROCKY IV. III has the best training montage with Rocky training with Apollo and the best version of "Gonna Fly Now" in my opinion. But IV has the most iconic boxing opponent and best soundtrack. Great job Minty!
What a pleasant non cynical review, very entertaining and much more enjoyable than so much of the acidic nasty clever clever crap that comes up on you tube. Ten out of ten.👍
Rocky 3 is my favorite of the original five movies (it's weird to think there's now two Rocky eras), because I liked how Rocky and Apollo go from being rivals to friends, and Apollo helps train Rocky for his fight against Mr. T. It was a wonderful turnaround, and makes the following movie even sadder. Yes, of course, the original is a classic, and rightly so, but I just love the progression the third movie gives us.
Best training montage is Rocky 4 (obvs) Best fight is the 2nd match in Rocky 3 Most realistic fight is Rocky 1 Best script is Rocky 1 Best ending credits is Rocky 5's (measure of a man playing, I mean come on!) Best overall: Rocky 4
My order worst to best Rocky balboa -> Rocky V -> Creed -> Rocky III -> Rocky IV -> Rocky II -> Creed II -> Rocky Im not saying creed or III are bad im just saying the others are better
Mr T has some of the most memorable lines in all of movie history! When he tells Adrian hey woman hey woman and then says rocky is not a real man and then he invites her over to his apartment for some real hanky panky! so great I love this movie. One thing about Rocky 4 I always thought was that Clubber lang should have fought Drago not Apollo! That would have been great
I think what had would have worked is that after Rocky retired due to the beating he took from Drago Clubber Lang step back into the ring and became the new heavyweight champ and Rocky had no interest in challenging him but clubber was always haunted by that defeat and always hates Rocky for bringing him down in the second fight that he tries to goats Rocky into a rematch but it ends up a street fight at the end of Rocky 5.
Stallone weighed 155 pounds in Rocky 3 and played a heavyweight champion!! I had no idea he was that small of a man. No wonder he always was getting hurt when filming these movies. He looked great though. Under 3% body fat is key i suppose.
"Here I am struggling to get off the sofa when the phone rings." I'm with you there, my friend. Your description of 2% body fat made me really contemplate my gut...
Hogan wasn't with the wwe when rocky was made he was with the AWA..he was a jobber in the wwwf year's prior but was a star with AWA and NJPW when he filmed the rocky movie
I still can’t get over how Philadelphia has a statue honoring a fictional boxer played by a New Yorker but not one honoring a real boxing champion and Phillie native Smoking Joe.
It's not as if anyone actually said, "No fuck Frazier, we'll have a rocky statue". Though is it. It already existed after being made for the movie. Also, Frazier WAS honoured with a cameo role in the 1st film. You've been watching too much bill burr mate.
My Dad had taken my brothers and I to see this in the theaters and I thought that it was awesome! Mr. T had done a great job as the menacing Clubber Lang.
Mr. T was and remains awesome. I can not believe that Stallone subsisted for any time at all on 10 egg whites and a piece of toast. Maybe for that 'final cut' right at the end, but there is no way that was his diet while enduring such an extraordinarily demanding routine.
Rocky III remains my favorite sequel in the series. It was entertaining from opening sequence to the end credits. And it was magnificent to see the one time rivals team up and become friends. You'd have to be a suspected racist to not like the bond the two characters formed, practically a brotherhood.
Easily the best training and fight choreography sequences in the history of films... No other non-Rocky boxing movie has ever come close to this franchise in terms of the fight scenes and most likely never will...
Rocky 3 was my favorite of the series. Sylvester Stallone & Carl Weathers had great chemistry. It was cool seeing them team up together becoming best friends. Rocky overcoming the odds
It's arguably the most advant-guard formulaic movie ever made. The tight script, pitch perfect direction and Scorsese-esque art-house touches in the editing. It holds up beautifully.
"Avant guard formulaic" is such an oxymoronic phrase that it made my brain twitch. You are obviously attempting to write so far above your intelligence limitations that it made me giggle.
Ya forgot to mention he modelled the actual fight to “the rumble in the jungle “, Ali vsForeman! Which added incredible coolness. Also heard that Shavers made him piss blood 🩸! Big difference between pretending and actual boxing 🥊! You can play tennis, hockey, football. Ya don’t play boxing!🤔😳🤕👊🏾
Here's one. In the dancing scene early at the beach, Jean Claude van Damme is one of the people in the crowd watching. I don't know if he was credited in the movie credits but if you look at the people you can't miss him.
Its too bad all the old footage of Hulk Hogan's matches in the AWA and WWF have had the entrance music altered. He didn't start using the classic "I Am a Real American" entrance music until AFTER the first Wrestlemania. His original entrance music was (you guessed it) Eye of the Tiger, and when that opening riff started playing it wound the crowd up like CRAZY and works a lot better. WWE doesn't want to pay royalties, so any Hogan match before 1986 you have ever seen through official means has been altered, such a shame, RU-vid has a lot of the original entrances, just works so much better and gives you a better insight into the cultural context of Hulk Hogan's rise.
