It’s a little bittersweet to watch Bruce’s movies now. Best wishes to him and his family. He’s had so many amazing films. This definitely one of the top.
If it makes you feel any better, by all reports Bruce is outright mean. Especially to fans, co-workers and anyone "beneath" him. He had REALLY let his stardom go to his head.
@@jude8943 well just keep in mind the stuntmen that helped to make those performances by callously being punched square in the face, BY BRUCE LEE, for 80 bucks a day. Only to have him openly trash talk you afterward.
The whole point going in to Unbreakable was NOT to know it was a superhero movie! And it is one of the best superhero movies of the past 20 years. TOTALLY underrated!
100% agree, I remember it dawning on me while watching it that it was a super hero film, that was the twist and absolutely made the film special. Still love this film, classic.
The whole Unbreakable/Split/Glass trio was so good!! I went into Breakable not expecting The Sixth Sense, I didn’t need to. I guess we needed the gap in between for the story for the last 2 to tie things up. Now it’s cool to watch them all in a binge. I also love that even the kid who played David’s son came back later to play his role again, as well as Elijah’s mom.
Bc Sixth Sense is really only good 1 time... Maybe 2. After you know the twist, it only holds up on maybe a2nd viewing bc you're looking for the Signs you missed
but the follow up movie Glass was horrible. the plot really tried to connect the two movies was extremely forced and boring. dont get me wrong Split was an excellent movie
Maybe it was the slow pace of the movie, but that ending had me stand up from my couch in shock. Never expected that ending, didn't see it coming and it hit me like a frying pan to my head. Wow. Excellent performance by all actors.
No it’s not!! Why! Why is everybody mindlessly saying that EVERYTHING is underrated?? Is there anybody out there that actually knows the definition of the word?
I never watched _"The Sixth Sense"_ because everyone kept going on about how it ended before I'd even heard about the flippin' film! Thankfully I was able to watch Unbreakable without any spoilers and it was great.
Watched it when Split came out and couldn't believe they are related until the post-credt scene of Split. We need more grounded Superhero movies like these!
The Sixth Sense is a great movie, but its "twist" (as wild as it is) makes it less re-watchable. Unbreakable is very re-watchable. Plus, it has Samuel L. Jackson... so how can you go wrong?
The only one of his movies that I never really cared for was the lady in the water I also loved the village and signs I think he doesn’t get enough credit
It was an ending, I wouldn't say it's a good one. As for not milking the franchise I guess we must wait and see as he opened a universe allowing for more individuals who could have their own story.
I am never sure if he does it as a gimmick on purpose, if he just read the name and never heard it before or if in fact all Aussies use the same pronunciations
@@swskitso He may have auditory dyslexia. He's just like my mum, who I'm convinced has it. When she hears a new name for something, like a coffee shop, or an actor, or a movie, she'll try to tell me what it's called and come out with some bizarre gibberish word. My favourite example is what she called Canada's national dish, poutine. She called it 'possytot'.
@@andyjohnson4907 my mom does the same thing. And also asks me if I know a movie that she can't quite remember the name of, it goes like: "that one movie, with the guy, you know the one. The funny guy, and he was in that movie!" Lol
I remember seeing this movie in the theater, and going in thinking that it was going to be an incredible bloodbath (I hadn't seen, and still haven't, The Sixth Sense). I was shocked at how cerebral it ended up being, but it's one of my favorite movies.
Things that made it good, marketing didn't market is a comic book movie and you're not sure if it's real until like 75% of the way through the movie. So even if the studio didn't want to market it as a super hero movie, I think it helped.
I LOVE that this wasn't pitched as a superhero. There was something throughout the movie where you're really unsure whether David is or isn't something special. It just feels very tense and grounded and like no other superhero movie out there. Not knowing if this is genuine or some kind of delusional psychological horror.
@@nsasupporter7557 You know, you can disagree with my opinion without nastiness. Well, maybe *you* can't. What on Earth makes you think your opinion is any more or less worthy or correct than mine? You know the old saying about opinions, don't you?
@@nsasupporter7557 No, sweetie, I'm a grown up person. Takes way more than that for my feelings to get hurt. Just don't know why people feel the need to be that way. Why do you think you feel so superior? Are you really very insecure irl, and need to be a nasty kid online? Can't let someone like something *you* think is bad without speaking like a baby bully? I'm really just wondering about your motivation for being a turd...
I love Unbreakable, and it's the batman sequel. David Dunn is a very interesting person, and not doing what you are made to do can make you depressed or longing for more. I feel if they went for the plane crash, it would have definitely given away a little too soon the twist, plus it might have made people not want to watch it after well the events of 2001. I love Split and bits of Glass. I very much encourage you to cover Spilt and Glass in the future! I watched these films before starting my community college, and they stayed within my mind after Psychology Class. There is so much depth in the films! I didn't mind David's Son, but yeah, that gun scene, right out of left field, lol. Great video, even if I researched some of this before, but not all of it. - Luke
As much as The Sixth Sense deserves its praise, this is my favorite Shyamalan film. Great tribute to comic book stories and relatable characters throughout.
I remember than scene where he breaks his arm on the Tilt-A-Whirl, too. I think they have some scenes that they decide to delete after it was out fir a while uf it the movie isn't doing well. When I saw Constantine in the theater, there was a scene at Papa Midnight's that showed John had a relationship with a demon. She is the one they focus on first after they put the cross in the sprinkler system.
To be fair, at the time of production no one wanted to watch a superhero movie. The last few 90's Batman movies kind of ruined the idea of superhero movies. Thankfully X-men came out the same year and fixed that.
You nailed it, the media landscape and the perception of superhero/comic movies were very different a quarter century ago. I remember my mom renting Captain America for me as a kid, it was silly and goofy looking haha. I think that was the 1990 version. Comic adaptations were usually crap other than the first two Batman movies. But, after so long, it can be easy for many of us to forget what things were like back then; or for some, they weren't even alive yet... Now I feel old haha.
Great to hear you use What Culture as part of your research. I really dig those chaps! Now I want the Minty x What Culture Show, since you're all so entertaining! Thanks Minty!
One day my sister's boyfriend got me really stoned and right after we walk back in the house my dad came home. As I was sitting on a stool in the kitchen my dad gave me a long look, and asked "Do you want to go see a movie?" And Unbreakable was what he took me to. It was amazing being super baked also helped but we both loved it.
“Hi welcome to America’s Hottest Talk line. Guys, press 1 now…” Think you’re right, wonder how many others besides us did this, and how many spam calls my phone will now get over the next year…. 😂. Maybe the video needs a pop up disclaimer.
@9:45 "yep, no more playstation for that whiny little turd." My wife and I clipped that bit, and are going to use it whenever our daughter talks back 😂
I don't think I ever saw it in theaters, but I definitely remember watching it shortly after it released on video. I had friends who knew about it and insisted I watch. Instant classic - I still have it in multiple formats at this point. I don't like how uncomfortable the movie makes me a lot of the time, but there is something about it that draws me in every time. Thanks for diving into this one!
On the DVD they explain that M. Knight had pretty much an entire pseudo version of The Avengers planned. There were designs for a speedster who was a high school track star, a shapeshifter ex-convict who was a woman, a telepath of some sort, and a Namor/Aquaman like character. All of whom were meant to be in JUST Unbreakable before getting their own films, and eventually a finale team up movie against The Horde and his master, Mister Glass, who was meant to transform into an almost Doctor Doom like character, wearing a protective suit to keep him from getting hurt any further.
I never saw Sixth Sense, everyone spoiled the twist so I was like "Well there's really no point now, it won't have the impact." I saw Unbreakable with no frame of reference to the director's other work and it still stands out as my favorite Shyamalan film
It's still a good film to watch, even if you know the twist. I never got to see it unspoiled , either. That's like not wanting to live your life because you already know how it ends, to me, anyway.
You captured the box office problem perfectly. I remember well how this was totally mis-marketed. I didn't know until years later what it was really about, and when I watched it, I was pleasantly shocked.
I'm sure there were others but sixth Sense was one of the first movies that I ever saw that had like a crazy ass twist at the end that I did not see coming I love that s***!!!!!!👍👍👍
Judging by their home I doubt the kid would have the latest console. Maybe even had to wait for a friend to upgrade to a ps1 and snatch up an original PlayStation.
This is my favorite M. Shamalamadigdong movie by far. Except when Mr. Glass explains all the obvious, I just mute or leave the room when the unfortunate act happens. Thanks again, Australian guy
It's my favourite movie of Shyamalan's, and I really did like the angle of a 'superheroes, but realistic'. You can actually imagine someone like him existing IRL; naturally gifted with tougher bones and strength, stronger than they appear they should be, and amazing instincts for people, and some people just never seem to get sick. Even his weakness makes sense in context; someone like that IRL would almost certainly have denser bones and musculature, so they'd probably sink. Him getting sick when near drowning could just be considered "Well, they nearly died, it makes sense that even a strong immune system would have issues under those circumstances." It sounds rather plausible, when you take it from that angle. There are in fact people out there with unusual natural talents. Maybe not to the level of surviving deadly accidents without even scratches because 'just that tough', but some people can do some pretty amazing feats, though they usually involve a lot of training.
I remember I liked this film when it came out and was pretty tired of hearing people say it was "good but not at good as the 6th sense" or how they were "looking for the twist". I saw a bio of Rod Serling some time later talking about how much he hated people expecting a twist in all of his work and couldn't help but think Unbreakable suffered for similar reasons. In any event, I always loved the soundtrack for this film, it captures the feeling of David rising to become a hero and finsing who he is in a way that is somehow reserved in it's scale but still triumphant and epic. Reflecting the setting and themes od the film very well, I felt at least.
This is one of my favorite movies. I had no idea it was a superhero movie when I went to see it but being a comic book geek I settled into it pretty quickly. And I was kicking myself for not knowing how it would end until Elijah said "this is where we shake hands". I should have seen it coming but I fell for the twist. I quietly spergged out when I saw the end of Split with David. Damn shame about Glass though.
You hit the nail on the head. The character from Split is only superficially linked to the characters from Unbreakable. Clearly, Glass was an afterthought. This is also likely why Glass is by far the worst film of the 3.
Don’t forget they were in Glass together (the sequel or 3rd film in the Unbreakable trilogy). Split being the 2nd, but only had Willis in it at the end.
He absolutely did know about the Superman incident. Even when I was a kid growing up during the 70's teachers and parents would discuss this because they themselves actually grew up when it happened. We were warned. Shyamalan being a GenX'er and a super hero comic book buff watching reruns of Superman on a constant on the weekends as a kid like I did...🤔
