Traveling to a country or countries where one's parentage is from, is soul-stirring. These places all have their own fragrances, flavors, and unique personalities....all to be marveled and enjoyed first-hand for a most honest perspective! It's worth the sacrifice of saving up for special trips. My travels have been far more educating than my college degree.

dweller inHisShelter, yes! My first trip to Greece is still one of my best ever! I practically sat in an old Yiayia's lap trying to see Athens. My dad explained in Greek tgat it was my first time to the old country...she passed me a handkerchief when I started crying upon my first sighting of the Acropolis.

Last Spring we went to Kusnacht, Switzerland, where some of my ancestors were born. We went there on the train, but returned to Zurich by boat. Many of the buildings date from the time they were there. As we left the dock and watched the town pass into the distance, I couldn't help thinking that this would have been the last thing they saw of their homeland as they set off to find their new life in America. It was humbling and inspiring at the same time.

As a history buff, that part of history coming alive really strikes a chord. It's so true and when you're standing or walking in the footsteps of the people, good and bad, that have helped shape the world we have today; it's rather sobering and in many ways, exciting.

Agree with most of your thoughts (I'm not in to souvenirs even if it's called wall art 😀) but one thing I really love about traveling is the planning. I do enough research to determine if and when I purchase my tix but then the fun really begins for me and I've got it down. Plan things to do/see/eat; read about must visit restos/cafes/pubs; learn top phrases and words; review the scams and warnings; become familiar with customs, culture, currency; review maps and learn public trans options; flag all the places on Google maps; investigate day trips and side stops along the way...all super fun for me. The only thing I do not do is schedule unless it's a reservation, concert, one night only market, etc. A key to fun travel is flexibility once in country. Excellent video Mark. I say this often but seriously, this was a home run. Checking in from very hot and humid Thailand by the way!

I like the enthusiasm you put in your videos! You are just right, travelling is a major experience in life. Unfortunately I've never been much of a traveller but I know that travelling is like "living longer" and better. For example: I've been in Venice only once when I was 11, even if I live at a 4 hours drive from it, and I still have vivid memories ( and it's been a long way since 1981), same thing to be said for Holland in 1994, still can feel the pleasantly crispy air and see the picturesque villages of Friesland... But, on the other hand, we all have "places of the heart" that will never bore us in a thousand years and they're just around the corner. I guess it's the eternal dilemma: make the best of your local reality or get lost in the world. Anyway, thank you because your channel is awesome; I'll travel again, hopefully, if not, I'll settle for watching your vids. Best regards to you, your exquisite wife and terrific kids!

Mark, you're so right about Bamberg. It's seriously because of your videos that I decided to visit there. I went on a day trip from Nürnberg because of the smoked beer that you've brought up in previous videos. Wow! That town seriously is a hidden gem. I did not think that I would have seen a place like it. I was completely amazed.
@shirlhendrickson8964
@shirlhendrickson8964 6 лет назад
I agree. On our last trip to Bamberg, I too was impressed by the beauty of its public buildings and churches. At the same time, I was sobered as we observed the memorial "bricks" in front of homes honoring those taken from those homes in the Holocaust. It is truly a city worth spending some time in - even if you don't drink. My wife and sister had "macaroni and cheese" in a restaurant that left us craving for more and amazed that Kraft dares to call their product by that name.

Great video, I love traveling too. The best things about traveling is first the planning, where to go, what to see and do. Studying the maps, the culture, history, language and the religion or the mindset that those people there have. Also eating good food, in a city or town with amazing architecture or surrounded by beautiful nature. To me the change of environment is very important or else I will get bored out since I live in a small city which I've lived in my entire life so far. When you travel you get the feeling of being born again as a different environment makes you curious like a child again... It's also quite like a challenge to see how you're going to manage and when you get back home I always feel more self-confident knowing that I managed back home alive after my adventures in an unfamiliar environment + you probably make some unforgettable memories to share.

I agree 😀 Moreover, you even know which way to choose if you gonna to justify someone. Even if still it's statistics from your point of view of other nations, but when some points match with points of other people, it's become more like true.

Great video! I agree with your ideas. Traveling is a pleasant education, something new and interesting can be discovered around the next street corner. I also like to have a look at the less attractive parts of cities and the factories and industrial areas; that way I also have a good idea how the residents earn a living. Exploring large cities (like Paris) on foot, like 10-15 miles per day, for 5 days, was an experience I'll always treasure. Happy traveling to you!

I have so many places that I want to visit! Now I just have to focus on saving money. I think my favourite thing about travelling would have to be the history and just being able to physically be in the place where all these events I've read about have happened. (That's the history geek in me talking). I think my all time favourite moment was in the Tower of London when I was able to visit the room where the Princes in the Tower were kept. I always used to love that story.

Making things come alive: being a classical singer, it's been a huge part of my travels to Europe. Great moments included attending a Bach cantata concert in Thomaskirche, Leipzig, standing in front of that painting of the Virgin Mary in Cologne's cathedral while singing this Schumann song set to this poignant Heine poem that refers to it in my head, and visiting the Brahms museum in Hamburg to end up singing Brahms lieder with a museum employee playing on a fortepiano Brahms had taught on. After moving to Europe and starting to work there, I thought singing a concert of French baroque music in the Versailles castle also came quite up there.

Over only a few days you can be the best travel buddies, enjoy time together - exchange travel tales and share great experiences. I’m heading to Sweden, Finland, and Norway in February for 18 days. Focusing mostly on the north. I always try to escape the big cities no matter where I go (Puerto Rico, Mexico, Russia, Italy, Peru, Lebanon, Morocco, Ireland and many more). But I love experiencing them as well (Lisbon, Madrid, Athens, Las Vegas, Moscow, London, Bucharest etc). I always try to see the country instead of just visiting one city for a few days and going home. Number 9, and 10 are why I truly travel.

I like to experience unique events or things that can only be done in a particular town. E.g. I've gone to concerts across the Atlantic because they were a favourite artist that was not going to come to my continent on what would be their last tour, so it was that your abroad or never! Most museums and art galleries have similar around the world especially in London unless you want see a specific display. I can only do the CN tower edgewalk in one place in the world, there's only one Empire State Building, Tower of London or Berlin Wall in its original place

What to love about travelling? Wow, where to even begin... I'm sort of a 'late bloomer' travelwise (my first trip out of country or state was at 27 and prior to that, I barely cared...but then the bug bit!) but since then, I feel incredibly fortunate that I've been able to see so many places I just never imagined seeing! And I'm pretty sure that's no. 1 on my list... feeling so privileged to have the opportunity and means to travel. I'm originally from the Philippines and having recently returned for the first time since birth, that privilege was only solidified considering the fact that so many people would simply never even imagine it. Every time I am in a new place, I feel like the luckiest person ever, I really do. Then in come all the points you made, especially history coming alive and really gaining perspective about the world we live in, the sheer visceral experience of being wherever I am and all the memories you carry from there. Love it all and really grateful for your videos for both providing such excellent information and also reigniting great memories. Do keep up the wonderful work and here's to continued safe and happy travels with your family!

Next year, I'm going to study in France since my university has a bilateral agreement with a French one. Even if French is my first language (I'm one of your Canadian followers!), I know that I will learn new things and discover a different culture. After that, I plan to travel in Europe for 2-3 months!

Mark...the organization that goes into your video series just astounds me. How long was it that you were working on this video alone? You must have a massive library of all the things you want to talk about, each place you did so, all the to-dos,...it makes my head spin. But I am SO appreciative you do this! BTW... my father is Norwegian. He'll tell you that "There is no understanding what makes a Swede do ANYTHING!" hahahahaha ...and then... my mother (the love of his life) is a Swede. His favorite rhyme is: Ten thousand Swedes, ran through the weeds, chased by one crazy Norwegian.

+Mc Kenna I love your dad :) that made me laugh. Yeah, these complilation videos usually will take about a six to 12 months of filming. They take a lot of time to edit so I don't do so many of them and then our travel schedule changes so much that I never know where we actually will be in six months so its hard to plan out. Our 12 Days of Christmas Travel video was probably the hardest compliation video to do.

Walter, if you haven't already, I suggest travelling to Japan. Just came back from our trip to Japan. It was hands down the best trip in our life. The food is delicious, the people are wonderful, you get a better understanding of their culture, the sushi is nothing like in the west. It was refreshing to see the real image of Japan compared to the extreme stories you hear about Japan in the west. We truly fell in love with the country and will be visiting it also in this year. :) Our trip resulted in us getting 4 new friends, losing a lot of weight, getting healthy new habits, becoming more patient, in general becoming nicer to other people, learning to treasure each meeting (ichi-go ichi-e) etc. You could say these are the reasons why we would like to go there again. Now we are enrolling into a Japanese language course, so next time we will be able to have an even richer experience. :)

I LOVE to travel. I think it broadens one's mind and opens one's perception of the world..Food is part of culture and some of the most interesting food I've eaten was abroad. I actually ate moscardini (a creature like a tiny octopus that when cooked looked like a tiny rosebud) The only thing that I didn't like was that some people assumed that I was one of those rude brash type of American due from their bad experience from someone else.
@woltersworld
@woltersworld 8 лет назад
+Parmesana I have never heard of that moscarini. was that in Italy? sounds tasty. I agree about broadening the mind. My 9 year old said that was what he loved about traveling. It is just so true. all the best on your travels!

The food thing reminded me of my in-laws that went to L.A. They were looking for a Chinese food restaurant. Stopped at at the first place,. Mama went in and asked where the chef was from. They said L.A. They drove on. Next stop, same routine and they said N.Y. They drove on. Third place, same routine and they said Hong Kong. Mama sticks her head out the restaurant door and said, "Park the car".

I was afraid you wouldn't get to the topic mentioned in #10, the perspective of other countries. For me it's not just seeing why people in other countries are the way they are but it's seeing how the people in the US are sometimes narrow-minded. We in the US don't really get a true perspective on the things people in the rest of the world believe in.

Mark of Wolters World sums up perfectly those reasons that are good for wanting to travel. There is so much to learn from those countries anyone goes to. Of course, there are countries (among them Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Central African Republic, Somalia and Yemen) that are so dangerous that travelling to them is not a good idea. South Korea's government bans that country's citizens from travelling to many of those countries, but even citizens of countries other than South Korea should be warned: the countries I mentioned earlier are in perpetual states of war.

Mark, I've got a 17 day vacation coming up, including travel time. I'm thinking of visiting Europe again this time. Last time I spent 17 days in Paris, didn't go anywhere else. Pretty sure I'm gonna go solo again this time and I'm thinking of these options: 1. Rent car or travel by train just in France and learn the history, language and culture. 2. Visit other places of interest like Prague, Gdansk, Amsterdam, Brussels and parts of Switzerland. Travel by train or flights. 3. A complete road trip visit places above and not plan so much. Where I end up with the car is where I sleep kind of deal. Which one do you suggest? I am going to land in Paris again since flight is the cheapest there, and I'd like to spend 1-2 days there as well just to see some friends.
@woltersworld
@woltersworld 8 лет назад
+MyRandomCommentsXD I would just train it, renting the car is great for specific locations, but going to multiple countries it just isn't worth it and if you only have 17 days, I feel you would be better served training it everywhere or flying with an EasyJet cheap airline so you are not wasting time on parking and finding places that take cars :) I think your #2 is cool as you have the time to see more countries.
