Gene Hoglan is easily one of the top 3 greatest drummers working right now! His speed, precision, and technical abilities are amazing and he’s always a blast to watch live. What always surprises me about his style is how he lets his feet, arms and really his wrists do all the work. He’s able to play technical stuff for long periods without getting tired by never flaying is upper body all over the place like some drummers. I also like how he doesn’t sacrifice the groove to a song by playing super technical just for the sack of playing technical. Gene Hoglan is definitely my favorite drummer and I’m so happy he continues to play with Testament! The last 3 Testament albums are amazing and Gene is a big part of that reason!🤘🏻

Met Mr Hoglan at a record store while he was touring with Dark Angel. Had him sign my coated Ambassador and the 1st thing he noticed was the tight placement of where the head was worn out. He mentioned that he played with wood beaters at the time and the reason for doing so. Basically you hit your drums with wood why not the bass drums? DUH been playing with wood beaters ever since. His drumming with Dark Angel still sets a standard that hasn’t been met🖖

I was waiting for any song from Mechanize by Fear Factory. He made that record so different and yet so good! Later albums lack that drumming "spark" that thing had. My pick would be Fear Campaign or Christploitation

I had the honor of meeting gene hogland walking around town before a dark angel concert in 1990. I was with 5 other navy guys and we saw them in Tijuana right before we shipped off to sea. Gene is a very soft spoken and friendly dude!!! I didn't see that coming because not only is the music brutal, he is a very large and imposing guy. I shook his hand and said, "you can play the drums, man!! that's all I'm going to say because that's all I have to say". He just smiled and said "well thank you".

My old band played a few Metalfests that Gene played at. He was such a fun guy to hang out with. And his drum skills are just out of this world. My drummer and I sat behind his kit when he was playing and his feet are insane. My drummer was speechless the whole time. Gene is one of the most underrated drummers in metal.

Was hoping to see some of his brutal playing from dethklok. Laser cannon death sentence blew my freaking mind hearing the speeds of his drumming. Gene is a beast behind the kit. 1 of my all time favorite drummers, dethklok is my favorite metal band.

Got to see Gene shred the kit with Opeth in 2006! We were told he literally learned the set that day. Got on that kit and sounded like an Opeth member! Gene's the man!

I can honestly say that Gene was for so long the most underestimated drummer ever! but the real truth is that he is so good person, so good guy that he wasn't interesting in showing off but making great music. I definitely hate how simple he makes it look, how precise and accurate he is, he's fast, he has good punch and he's really creative. He doesn't need to give " Smart" drumming techniques, he expresses everything really simple that you get shocked! I'd love to attend to one of his clinics, he's one of the best in the business! He's played with the best of the best and he's still giving us something more to learn! This guy is in other level.

Slayer played in Seattle in 1985 and Gene was there with the band, he came out and did the soundcheck on drums for Lombardo. That warm up he did was insane! When he finished people were chanting his name.

His solo on SYL's Hope still makes me in disbelief. Gentle Gene is a god.

Seeing Death on the Symbolic tour is probably the concert Id wanna see if I could see any concert. I didnt get the album till they were way passed it.

I knew a guy who worked as a session/studio drummer in NY and later in LA. He was an amazing drummer in his own right. But he actually got to have Gene work with him a bit once on his kit set-up and technique. I pulled an IRL "pics or it didn't happen". Next day he provided the sauce. He also got to fill in for a drummer in some hardcore band in the 90s that was supporting Ozzy and Megadeth. Met and worked with all of them and had pics to go along with it. Coolest shit in the world for me, at the time.

Saw Gene twice in one night on the last Slayer tour . First with Testament, then he sat in for Charlie during Anthrax's set. Dude is unstoppable.

When he played with Death in Tokyo 95, he got that snare to crack like a shotgun blast. Listen to Spiritual Healing from the show, its on RU-vid. Sure, its partially due to acoustics and recording equipment, but it shows just how presence he has behind the kit whenever he plays.

I always forget he's been in every metal band except Iced Earth who, oddly enough, has had everyone except Gene.

Gene is a God. Since the late 80's. An amazing human and musician.

I saw Dark Angel open for Overkill in 88 or 89, hard to remember the exact year but I remember DA tore the roof off the place. I was in the pit their entire set, it couldn't be helped. The music was so heavy and fast it forced you to move. I've seen a million shows since, every metal and hardcore band, but Dark Angel and the mighty Gene Hoglan set the standard by which others would be measured.🤘LA CAFFEINE MACHINE🤘

Ever since his appearance with Death, he is one of the few, most fundamental drummers in death metal (only accompanied by Derek Roddy and Sean Reinhart, probably a few more too)

Not only a great drummer but a weirdly concise explanation of random drum beats. Concisely random is fucking mind-bendingly cool. Best teacher ever.
