Sean Reinert Tribute - drumtalk [special]

This is my tribute to my biggest drum influence -- in early 2020 I filmed segments with Gene Hoglan, Tomas Haake, Dirk Verbeuren, Flo Mounier and Steve DiGiorgio and when covid started I had to do Gus Rios and Lee Harrison remotely. Felipe Belalcazar gave me access to the footage he shot with Sean for his Death documentary. I'm so thankful for everything I learned from Sean and I'm glad I knew him.
Sean Reinert is one of the most important drummers in metal music. His playing on Death's Human record and his work in Cynic, Portal and all his other projects was influencing so many drummers that his place in the drum commmunity cannot be overstated. He died unexpectedly on the 24th January of 2020 and it's an incredible loss to both musicians and all the people who knew him.
Thanks to everyone involved in this for your support and effort.
And thank you Sean Reinert for everything you did.
We miss you.

4:54 I'm the one who gave Paul Masvidal Chuck Schuldiner's phone number. I got the number from a guy at a concert in Miami Beach. It wasn't in '83 or '84, but 1987. When I gave Paul Chuck's number he told me he wanted to call him and see if they would jam together. I told him I that I thought their musical styles would clash. Boy, was I wrong, and I'm so glad I was. Sean Reinert rest in peace.

Thank you. It's appreciated. I thought the next Death album was going to be more Spiritual Healing vein. Then I heard Steve was going to be on bass and two guys from Cynic. I was like, who the heck is Cynic? I knew Sadus and was hyped he was on bass. When I heard the album, my jaw dropped. Unfortunately my dad wouldn't let me go see that tour in CA, because it was a school night. Still my favorite Death album to this day.

Sean is top tier metal drummer. CREAM OF THE CROP, without a doubt. Everything I do, is Reinert influenced. And many drummers these days will think they're doing something groundbreaking by throwing in a double paraddiddle triplet ride groove, but Mr.Reinert broke all bounds for heavy drumming like no one. In my eyes. Sean Reinert is a Mount Rushmore metal drummer

Lack of Comprehension landed on a mixtape at my brother's apartment when I was 13 or 14. It stood way out on it's own. I had no idea who it was, and neither did he. I told myself I must discover who this band is! I listened until I was 18, utterly mystified! I got an older, Metalhead drummer roommate, 3 of us living together at the time, and he happened to be listening to Death's Human one day. "WHO IS THIS?!!??" I demanded to know. He goes over to his tape collection, pulls out Cynic - Focus, hands it to me and tells me "If you love Human, you'll love this 10x more!".... Wanna say a really genuine and sincere thanks to all the participants and contributors and especially to DrumTalk. This tribute is as insightful and inspiring as it is touching. But I really never expect anything less from this channel! Thank you🤘💓🥁

I met Gus Rios at the Bay Strikes Back concert in Hard Rock Cafe Orlando this past April. He was at the bar, sipping his beer and I just went there, introduced myself and started talking about Sean. It was a 5 min conversation about the legacy of this wonderful beast. He gave me some awesome insights about his life, musical master craft and passing; Gus got quite emotional at the end, so I knew it was time to leave the guy alone. Sean is the only drummer that has made me cry with his playing, and I am mainly a guitarist. The "bridge" tom rolls on "Space for This" bring me to tears every single time. I can't help it. It's the PERFECT accompaniment, it accentuates the vocals in the most beautiful way. There's so much emotion in that section specifically. He always played in service of the song, first and foremost. For some reason, I thought about him again today. It still hurts. Same with Sean Malone. Thank you for this thoughtful, and beautiful tribute to one of the greatest Musicians to have ever lived. But at the very least, they laid down all that was best in them, they recorded their best, they made HUGE statements, and influenced soo many. We can take out their Lp's or CD's, and listen to what they achieved with every ounce of their being and pass on their legacy to the next generation. Ok this is getting me ! I never “made it” like theses guys did BUT I was just under that Local radar of musicians in the Poughkeepsie NY area in 1990 1991 till now 2023 and I lived right down the street from Paul Masvidal didn’t even know it. I was younger than these guys just started 9th grade and they were already well into high school a few grades up. I played guitar pretty well but was too young to hang but on occasion would get the chance to jam with these guys at party’s and band practices and played and made relationships with almost every musician in that circle. Some I still talk to today. I was in 13 to 15 different bands in the NY area from 1990-2009. It is too nuts to hear that we ALL pros and the underlings like me heard Sean on Death Human in 1991 and it FREAkED us out!! When digital age came about I emailed Sean Malone and Paul masvidal about guitar tablature for Cynic because it was to advanced for me to hear and know the notes like a Metallica or My Dying Bride or Slayer songs where I can hear exactly where they are on the guitar neck . My ear let me enjoy the drums and I knew some pros on drums so I started messing around in the late 1990’s as I could understand the ride cymbals he was playing and the patterns ,grips and techniques he used so now I mess with drums more than guitar . Thanks so much for making this documentary/tribute it really brought back some shit for me.

I never realized how legendary he was to the drumming world. I had obviously heard his name but never paid close attention to his work. I'll listen closely to his albums. This video was so inspiring to watch and a beautiful tribute to him. Thanks Drumtalk !

This was fantastic. Loved all the interviews. Very well done tribute. I have been lucky enough to see one of my drum heroes play his Death era material on twitch, Gene Hoglan. You can really see/hear how Sean made Gene step it up on "IDTP".

IDTP was a game changer IN IT'S OWN RIGHT for me. And hey, IK EVERYONE loves/prefers the Reinert -Human CD generally (and in NO WAY would I discount it!). It's just that, for "me, myself and I"? I always preferred the Hoglan era Death material (with Symbolic being my favorite all time Death CD.) Maybe it's the actual MUSIC of the Hoglan era, OR maybe just that Hoglan was the more harder heavy player (as he described in the documentary) IDK but either way, THIS IS a GREAT documentary on Reinert, NO doubt.

@@jamescon55 I get totally hooked by that fretless bass on the ITP, every time I listen to it it is literally the only thing I hear.

What an absolute monster he was... His work on Cynic and Gordian Knot stands out as some of the most elegant and flawless drumming ever - finesse and brutality at once... And the mesmerizing intertwining with Malone... Thanks for creating this beautiful homage! What a great musical editing, impeccably alternating studio and live cues!

@broquil thanks for your comment and thank you for bringing up the audio editing -- I wanted it to reflect Sean's fluidity on the drums as good as possible

As Ringo was to popular music, Bonham was to rock and Dave Grohl was to grunge, Sean was to metal. After Human extreme music changed forever. I love this tribute so much, really well done

The sadness I feel for his loss continues today and this rips that scab off in the best way. I never expected to see something like that and I'm so thankful to be watching it. I'll never look or listen to a drummer the same way since I first heard him on Human. What a sublime beast. Love to his family and loved ones.

What a great tribute. I think I've spent most of the last year trying to not think about the fact that he's gone, and this is a great chance to remember him and celebrate his life and his monumental contribution to the world of drumming and metal more generally. Metal today would look completely different if he hadn't been around. I got so much of my (very limited) drum repertoire from his playing. RIP Sean.

Thank you for this! It is a really great tribute to Sean. I met him after a Cynic show in Chicago around 2009 or so and for about 15 mins we were geeking out over Vinnie and talked about his performance on City Lights. He was very passionate about music and had a great sense of humor. Just a very down-to-earth, cool cat. That’s how I will always remember him.
