Call us pedantic, but why can't films/movies and TV get video games right? They're nearly always strangely featured, whether it be through an effort to connect with the "gamer audience", terrible product placement, or just to mock the ever-growing sect of people who enjoy video games. From Scrubs to Shaun Of The Dead, House of Card to True Blood, or Hurt Locker to The 40-Year-Old-Virgin, here are some of the worst offenders.

The Big Bang Theory where Sheldon's mother sends him his N64 and he claims he can carry on his Super Mario 64 save file by using a memory card - when the game actually saves to the cartridge... Always bugged me.

That scene in the first Hitman movie where 47 walks by a couple of kids *playing Hitman Blood Money*. I know it's just stupid fanservice but the implications of the Hitman video games existing within this Hitman film universe make me have an existential crisis every time I think about it.

One of the Father Ted episodes feature Street fighter 2 for the Amiga and they show an A600 not plugged in but also the music off the Amiga version of SSF2 and the graphics is the SNES version of Street Fighter 2!

I saw in one show a character playing a game on a laptop and in one shot it's clearly a video of game footage as you can see the play bar along the bottom of the screen.

I’m old enough that I saw The Wizard in theaters (it came out in the early days of my youthful Nintendo obsession), and believe it or not the movie has a valid excuse for using Mario 3 in a proto-Esports tournament prior to its North American release. See, the whole idea of the Video Armageddon tournament was that entrants played various Nintendo games in single player each round, and whoever got the highest score in their heat would move on to the next round. Mario 3 was used only for the final round, with the idea that the field would be leveled because it was a game none of the finalists could have practiced beforehand. (The film never stated the tourney was only open to Americorns, but presumably it was.)

Why are we "Americorns"? Btw it bugged me in the movie when the girl is yelling advice to the kid about "getting the flute" in the world-1 castle. HOW WOULD SHE KNOW?! Its impressive enough that he had a leaf and was able to find it on a first playthrough under that pressure.. but, come on!! She nor he would even know about the Warp Flute yet. It's a brand new game! Lol..

One of the worst I saw lately was in the Office (US). They're playing COD, on PC, and one character asks how you turn around. The response is "just push A then D" ...no, that would just strafe an inch... IT THE MOUSE! YOU KNOW THIS!

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle should be on here. The whole film is an awkwardly shoehorned in video game! It’s a good film generally but some of the dialogue is so... 🤦‍♀️ Like when they have to explain what an NPC is...

HerHollyness I was also gonna suggest the episodes of The X-Files and Murder She Wrote about VR games, but I think they wanted to keep the list to real video games featured in fiction rather than fictional video games in fiction. Though considering a Jumanji video game based on the fictional video game from Welcome to the Jungle is coming out (or might already be out), an excuse could be made for its inclusion.

The movie I just watched [First Kill (Bruce Willis, Hayden Christensen)] has Killer Instinct Season 2 on Xbox One. They’re actually playing the game in the scene where it appears.

I loved The Wizard when I was a kid, but the big Super Mario 3 showdown at the end bugged me even then. What nagged me most was when Jimmy got a warp whistle (or "magic flute," as they called it) and the girl called out what it was and what it did, when it should have been the first time anyone had ever seen one in a Mario game!

Cmonnnn.. Super Mario Bros 3 not being released yet is literally one of 'Wizards' major plot lines. I havent seen the movie in 30 years but I still remember the scene where Fred Savage finds out he'll be playing Super Mario Bros 3 and makes a comment about how the game was still unreleased at that point, rendering all the months of practice he'd been doing on other released games useless. The organisers of the tournament used it as a way to ensure all entrants would have an even playing field

Remember that one episode of "Arrow" where Felicity and William are seen playing Injustice 2? You know, the game that features several Superheroes and Villains and their secret identities that also happen to exist within that Universe? Like Green Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Captain Cold, etc...

In The Wizard, Jimmy plays Double Dragon on a Play Choice 10 arcade machine while Corey and Haley bicker, and Corey expresses surprise that Jimmy scored 50,000 points in the game. Jimmy only got to level 3, and the typical score count you hit by the point in the level where Jimmy died only reaches about 15,000-20,000 points. In order for Jimmy to hit 50,000 by level 3, he'd have to exploit a glitch where he can trap an enemy on one side of the screen while keeping his hit box on his character's side, and repeatedly punching it allows him to rack up points because the hit box doesn't die, which means Jimmy reached 50,000 that way, which means JIMMY IS A CHEATER! Also in The Wizard, Corey and Jimmy's dad plays Ninja Turtles, but none of the sounds the game makes matches the video. If they recorded him playing the game, why didn't they record the audio of the game too so the audio fit what was being played? Also in The Wizard, Corey's/Jimmy's/Nick's dad turns off an NES that Nick is playing while their truck get's repaired by unplugging it's controller. That's not how consoles are powered.

Call me pedantic, but The Wizard shouldn't be number 1. It was, after all, a film where videogames were a *major* part of it, not just "awkwardly featured." Also, Super Mario Bros 3 being a featured game in a tournament with a timer isn't *THAT* unrealistic. GamesMaster (Peter will know that show) would regularly include single player game challenges like beating X amount of levels in under X amount of time and those sort of challenges/tournaments would feature at events.

You forgot Hot Tub Time Machine's portrayal of Second Life, Percy Jackson The Lightning Thief when Hermes kid is playing Call of Duty, literally every Big Bang Theory episode with various, We're The Millers with a PSP or PSV, Inside Man with the kid's PSP which shows a game that doesn't exist but looked hecka fun, etc.

Don't remember what series it was (some soap-opera, probably German, that my parents were obsessed with - there have been a few) but they had the usual awkward moment: playing a game on mute, with the wireless gamepad clearly turned off. Saw those scenes with PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and likely an unplugged PS2 or several. Also, game consoles being called "the Nintendo" is a joke that should have been outlawed three generations ago...

In the TV show Eureka one of the characters picks up an Xbox 360 controller presses the button and it instantly turns on the TV and the console which is in the middle of a level from halo 3 ODST. No start up screen nothing just straight into the the game. 🤣

If you want to see a video game appearance in a movie actually done some justice, then watch 'Reign Over Me' with Don Cheadle and Adam Sandler. Despite what you'd think, it's not a comedy and actually a very sad film. But all I'll say without spoiling the plot is 'Shadow of the freaking Colossus!!!' But for me, a really bad one is definitely that episode of The X Files called "First Person Shooter". My God, it's still such a guilty pleasure seeing it whenever the episode comes on, but I don't think it did the image of video games, or gamers in general, any favours at all. I mean where to start? The portrayal of practically every nerd stereotype all in one episode? The Lone Gunmen's cringe inducing gamer speak? The uncanny valley 'Deathtrap Dungeon' CGI Scully? Mulder and Scully in their 'Full Metal Jacket done on a tight budget' battle attire? 😂😂😂

Role Models. Absolutely love the film but there's one bit where they're playing Pro Evo. The guy playing is going on about a shot that he's taking or something but when the camera shows the screen it's very clearly a replay on the screen. It is the one shot that makes me cringe more than any because watching a guy "play" a game when it is obviously not being played...ah, I hate it. But...Role Models. Better than it has any right to be.

How hard could it be to just have the actors actually play a section of game while filming? Maybe it’s more of a pain in the ass than we think it is idk Seems like it would be the simplest way to make it believable
