My wife and I are retired, the kids are all grown and our dog is a major part of our family as we start doing couple's RV'ing. When we first got our trailer we took her to check it out. She had a bit of hesitation with the stairs as they are see through without a solid riser like home stair cases but she soon learned to go up and down. She has a special spot for her bedding and water dish and so far is doing fine. We talked to our vet about what we needed for a dog/first aid kit and that really helped. Our vet even said if we needed something to relax her a bit for a trip she would prescribe it so talk to your vet.
Great video and information. I do everything mentioned, and add a special first aid bag just for Nik. My 80 pound german shepherd. I include, gauze and tape, a small bottle of alcohol, another small packet of the powder used if you cut their nails too short to stop bleeding. Tweezers, a cloth, and a pet friendly insect repellent. She loves to travel.
Put an outside lead hooked to a body harness and not onto a leash collar around the neck so they do not choke themselves out or cause harm to their necks in case they run past the end of the lead chasing something please. Nice video.
Love the video ! Packed with great tips. One more tip that are vet gave us is to make sure they have their kennel cough and rattlesnake vaccination especially in the Hill Country of Texas state parks. We love traveling with our four year old German Shepherd Heidi and we just got a 14 week old German Shepherd rescue named Ranger and the first thing we did is introduced into the fifth wheel and get him used to not barking in it before we go on our next trip next month for 15 days with the grandkids. I find it just spending an afternoon in the RV while it's parked at the ranch here helps them get used to knowing what to expect once we're on the road
Great tips Katherine! We’ve never heard of the rattlesnake vaccination. We’ll have to look into that. Thanks for the info! Have fun traveling with Heidi, Ranger & the grandkids!!
Great Video!! I love taking my dog and she loves it too. I often fail to do a tick check and currently travel very little so it’s not been a problem, but I hope to do more. I know to check pet permission but didn’t realize that some breeds are not allowed. I very much appreciate you encouraging pet courtesy and neighborly etiquette because it’s SO VALUABLE!!!! Thanks again!
Rebecca Grider One of the most rejected breeds and misunderstood is the Pit Bull... I’ve seen ones that would rip you to shreds if giving the chance and I’ve known others that were big, cuddly babies... It all depends on how they are raised/trained...! Any breed of dog can be made mean and viscous...
Well said. I walk my boy barefoot so I can feel what they feel. If it's too hot for me it's too hot for them too. Makes you more aware of sand spurs and fire ants. I always taught the dogs to drink from sports bottles. That way we can share! Keep up the great videos, I hope to visit Texas soon.
I have been asked about rabies and distemper for our dog. The advantage of having a diesel pusher is we can turn the chairs around so our dogs can't reach the dashboard. We carry a collapsible bowl for water when hiking with the dog. A side note, I like my dogs barking at people cutting through my campsite. Scared many violators.
Maybe my thumb isn’t as big around as yours. 👍. It’s suppose to be warmer tomorrow and it’s dark here already. I’ve got one out in the back. It has a big clasp on one end and maybe both. I’ll check it out in the morning. That’ll be late morning. 😃😂 Deb >^..^
Great advice. We have two little Poms and we don't feel comfortable leaving them in the RV alone because they will bark constantly till we get back. Any tips we can use to get them used to being alone? I can also say that having a small dog makes cleaning up after them harder. So many times I can't find their droppings in the leaves, even though I stood there and watched them go. Thanks again for sharing.
Hi Jean! Maybe try making them comfy and then stepping outside for a minute or so. We started Star out with a minute or so where we stepped outside and closed the door. As she started to learn that we were coming back, we were able to extend the time that she was inside without us. Don’t know if it works for all dogs.
If you put a neon compound in their food then poops will b easy to find...if you shave them they will keep cool n not overheat....if you put contact cement lipstick on them they will bark much less or give them a big dose of no flush niacin and L theanine get both at a serious health food store.
Hi guys. Great video. I'm selling my home and will be buying a skoolie as a temporary home because I'm not sure where I want to buy another home. I have 3 dogs @ 100 lbs each, and a small dog, so this will be a challenge but my only option, given I need the room and the mobility of travel. Any recommendations in Texas for rv parks with multiple dogs, and a tall portable fence enclosure system?
Hi! Traveling with 4 dogs & 3 of them @100 lbs will probably make it difficult to find an RV park. Many of them have restrictions based on number of pets, size or breeds. You’ll definitely want to call ahead to check. Your other option would be state parks. We’ve seen quite a few folks out camping with multiple dogs and multiple large dogs in Texas State Parks. Of course with those, you’re usually looking at 14 day max stay. As far as an enclosure, we don’t have any experience with that, so we can’t make a recommendation.
Always use bottled water for your dog. They get diarrhea from different regions water. I also carry extra poop bags, in case, someone “forgets” theirs. 😉
