Thanks for educating me on fish keeping even. I have been keeping fish for more than 40 years but I learn something new every day. I started about 5-6 months ago AGAIN started with a 10 gallon tank and now I have 7 tanks, a 10, 5, 20, 55, and 2 5 gallon tanks and 1 10 gallon that is not setup.
I love that you guys know all the misconceptions out there. Dismissing the falsehoods and just getting to the point. Your channel has been extremely helpful in that respect.Ty
@@d.t.ts.1770 that would be cooler than any other mythical creature. It can change size to accommodate tank mates, provide bright light everywhere it goes, eats all algae happily on site, and stabilizes water quality. And it’s magical godly essence makes all nearby plants in a 10 mile radius grow rapidly
I just can’t explain how much I love this channel. I discovered it recently. 10 things videos are the best. This channel is the only channel that gets me excited when a notification pop up in my lockscreen. Keep up with the great work John and Lisa!
So great to have 10Things back! Thank y'all for the tip about UV sterilization; sounds like exactly what I need for one very specific problem in my 40 breeder.
Hey guys, I just wanted to say thank you and keep up the great work. Your videos are very informative and helpful to newcomers. Your videos inspired me to jump on fishkeeping as a hobby. I started with a 10G tank with 2 goldfish. After watching and learning from you guys, i moved them into a 55G tank that I made sure was cycled for 2 months. It was a friend's old tank that was replaced with a 75G. The same substrate was used along with the same filters and decorations. I added a marineland magniflow canister filter after watching your canister comparison video. My fish are thriving and are very active. I get to enjoy pet fish like my dad did when I was younger. Thank you John. Thank you Lisa. And again keep up the good work. Looking forward to the new videos and the others I haven't seen yet.
Also, I have 4 Goldfish now. 2 Fancy Goldfish and 2 Black Moor fish. I do not plan on adding more to the tank or having them reproduce as they are all males.
I wish there'd been resources like this when I was a kid with first one, then a second common goldfish in a ten gallon. As you can probably guess, they both died soon after the introduction of the second fish, after 2 years with the first. This time round I have two 3" fantails in a 20 gallon, already have the 38 gallon they'll be going into later this year.
Nice. I still have my 10G as a quarantine or breeder tank. It's been cycling for a few months now and it'll stay that way until I purchase new fish to put into it. But for now, my goldfish are my babies. I was looking into getting like a small school of guppies to put into my 10G and then getting a 20G to move them into when they get larger. Any advice on guppies? I've been looking into fantails, blue moscows, and yin/yang guppies. They look awesome and would look great with the right landscape. I have a 10 and 20G heater but not being used since my room temp is 72. Same with the water in my fish tanks. I also use a 20G filter on my 10G tank so filtration is great.
Good advice on a UV sterilizer. I kept doing water changes in one of my tanks hoping it would clear up the hazy water. A worker at my LFS suggested a UV sterilizer. It cleared up my tank beautifully.😁
Thank you so much for the UV filter advice!! Made such a big difference!! I have a 55 gallon tank and i bought the one you recommended, the first 2 days I didnt see any improvement but finally on the third and fourth day it became crystal clear.
I have a 10 g. Tank for my Betta. It is your “10 things” that has helped me more than anything as a newbie. I don’t let my tank wait longer than 7 days without a vacuuming and a 1/3 water change. I only have Anubias growing and the java ferns are doing beautifully. The one thing that I have to stay on top of all the time because I live near the mountains, is water evaporation. Within 4 days I will have lost at least 2quarts To evaporation. And especially because I hate the white line at the top of my tank that shows how much is evaporated. It is a real pain to clean it every time, and because we have very hard water here, it is thick. Thank you so much for your 10 things, It has helped me keep my water crystal clear, and my tank is always lovely to watch.
Thanks for the tip on UV sterilizers! Had struggled with a cloudy tank for months. After seeing your video, I realized the tank was very slightly green tinted. Ran a UV sterilizer an it cleared up in just a few hours. Amazing.
I'm not sure if I need one, but my Betta is recovering from Fin Rot, and i have a little haze? And it definitely can't hurt me to put one in, I had no idea they were a thing!
put quilt battening in your filter!! You can get it from hobby lobby or a craft store for $5-6. Keeps your tank crystal clear! I have been doing it for years!!
Good Morning John 🌞... I've been a big fan of yours for a while now... Lol. You, Ben Ochart and Cichlid Dan know your stuff.... Can't forget Canada's King Of DIY. Anyway, I'm getting a Aqueon 65 Gallon Arc for cichlids... I was thinking 2 AquaClear 70's or 2 AquaClear 110's....I appreciate your feedback...and a shout-out to your girlfriend/co-host 👏..
Excellent video with many great ideas. Thankfully I don’t have this issue, as I have upgraded my filter and put sponges inside and on the intake. What fish is that on 10:29? It looks like a loach.
Something I found with dirty lids is it dulls the light, which can actually make it easier for some of the more pesky species of algae to take over. Also on substrate, I have a ton of feeder snails that live in my substrate. Hundreds in my 70 gal cichlid tank. They multiply proportionally to their food supply and eat stuff inside the substrate. I also use amphipods(Scuds/sideswimmers from my invert tank) to keep the tanks cleaner for as long as they last before the fish eat them. Still have maintenance though it is admittedly easier.
Good one...always full of handy hints. I switch off the light and give that a good clean too. It's surprising how much algae collects on it... Being in a warm and damp atmosphere I guess it cannot be helped. The water collects on it from the minute "spray" from the air stones.
With the cleaning of the lids. What is suggested in cleaning them. I usually use a sponge with a non scratch pad on them. Also what is a good way of cleaning the white mineral build up after it starts?
Thanks for all the helpful videos! Have you done any on switching to a new filter system? I want to upgrade, but I’m scared of killing off my good bacteria. I have lots of happy fish and would hate to mess that up.
I feed my goldfish every second day because the breeder I got them off said to. When I increased to daily after a few months the tank got dirty much quicker. They have plants in the tank as well so every 2nd day has never been an issue either :)
Absolutely adore these videos 🐠! I don’t have a tank but planning on getting a 50-60gallon tank, would love any advice you might have. I’m planning on having guppy fish, Platy fish, maybe mollies, Rasboras and tetras. Any help would be great, do you need medicine on hand? If so what? I have watched almost all your videos (a lot anyways) but any advice you think might help, Thanks.🐟
Best tip somebody told me was to buy a cheap pillow, cut it open take a small bit of the stuffing out and put it in your filter, it helps takes the fine particles out of the water. Works really well
I buy bags of fiber-fill stuffing for a couple dollars and stuff my filters. Throw away those worthless sponges that came with your filter and your water will be continuously polished,
Hi John .. I recently had my aquarium set up.. the water is clear and safe and everything looks normal but the water is too much bubbly.. almost like a can of soda with lots of microbubbles .. how do I get rid of that ?😢
@KGTropicals - Why do you recommend the Fluval Marine light for a freshwater tank? Is there a benefit of using the Fluval Marine over the planted light?
Hi thanks for this. Can I ask what cold water fish are those at 4:00 look like calico fantails or ryukin cross asking because I have them and was told there ryukin plus they got jiggy with it and now I have. Loads of fry thanks
One more tip, try to use submersible lights and place them at the back of the tank in the top portion just below the water level. This would prevent oxidation on the lights and the light throw would also be great all the time since there is no oxidation on the lights.
My juvenile female betta got herself jammed in a piece cholla tonight! I managed to get her out by using needle nose pliers to break the cholla open. She's alive, but I wonder if she sustained injuries; time will tell. Maybe a "10 things" could be on "what stupid things fish will do." Bettas are so smart and inquisitive, it can get them in trouble. Also, like arowanas, there are fish that are notorious jumpers at all sizes. I also had an incident yesterday when a young guppy got some plant stuck in his mouth- the dummy thought it was food, so I netted him and pulled the stuff out; he's fine.
In the section about trimming the plants, about 4:45-4:50, there's a fish I don't recognize in the background. Looked kind of like a washed out/stressed oto. What is it?
"Who wants mud in their Tank?" I am seating at home thinking I want that look it would save a little money on my tank. I'll take that any day of the week.
I have just got a 230lt tank and even though there isn't even water in it yet, im worried we will have this problem so looking now before the problem happens lol defo going for a black background
One of my tanks always has a grey haze no matter how clean the water is. Even after a 100% water change and a completely cleaned tank and removal of decor. Thinking about trying the uv sterilizer to see if that helps.
Hi, I'm new to fish keeping and enjoyed watching your videos, they are a massive help. Slightly off topic from this video but I have just got a 125ltr tank and am currently in a fishless cycle. The tank wasn't new and came with 3 internal filters. I want to keep tetras and Danios in the tank but need to make the filters safe (Ocean Free Hydra 40, AquaEl asap filter 700, Boye SP-602E). Could you, or any pf your followers, recommend a guide I can follow to make them safe? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm not familiar with any of those filter brands, but what I did with second hand hang-on back filters was disassemble them, scrub them with hot water and a chemical-free rough-ish sponge to rid them of old muck/hard water stains, wipe them down with vinegar OR bleach, rinse them very, very well (no smell of either, think I did a wipe down with dilute Prime to be safe with the bleached filter), and reassemble. All media was replaced with new. You'd have to use your own judgement to see if that would work with internal filters.
Carol I have 14 Shubunkins there size 5 to 3 inches long. I had them for 12 years. I put them in my pond every spring. I bring them in the winter. Right now they are in a 80 gal black rubber tank. I would like to put them in a glass tank so I can see what is going on with them. What size tank should i get for them?Could you please help.
My bristlenose isn't constantly putting in work. He just sits in the same spot most of the time lol. I know they're mostly nocturnal but even at night he doesn't move around much
I have African cichlids (10 fishes of size 1-2 inches) tank with rocks and driftwood. Now, my tank is full with algae, though I clean and change 25% water change every week.. Can we put Pleco along with Cichlids ? I know, Pleco is not a solution but, I want my tank to be crystal clear. How do I do that ? please help
im looking at my fish tank thinking man what else can i do to make you pop as he says "we tend to never be satisfied with our own aquarium we look at them and we say there's got to be something i can do to make it look better"
I have a 55gallon with some mollies platys corys and a.....betta... the betta is young and there's are plenty of tall plants for him etc but I was wandering if a bristle nose would be okay with in my tano
