Here are 10 tips on how you can teach your bird to talk. Many of you have asked how I taught Ricco to talk so I thought I'd share a couple of ways I have done with Ricco and my past birds that worked for me. Teaching a bird to talk should be fun and enjoyable for both you and your bird.
Keep in mind that just because some birds are known to have the ability to talk, doesn’t always mean they will.
Getting a bird because of its talking abilities should never be the case.
Some birds will pick up on talking quickly, some may take longer and some may never talk at all, so getting a bird strictly for this could end up in disappointment. It is also unfair to the bird.
Just because a bird can not speak, does not make them any less valuable.
Love them unconditionally ❤️
PLEASE DO PROPER RESEARCH AND NOT IMPULSIVE BUYING, THESE ARE LIVING ANIMALS WHO DO HAVE FEELINGS.

These have been really helpful tips. We finally got our rescued little girl to start squeaking out "thank you", even if it sounds more like "tank ooo". She's a sweet little Albino IRN, probably 2-3 years old now. We found her after she had apparently had a run in with a crow or other larger animal and had been hiding in our Jasmine bushes. We named her Jasmine for that reason. We're trying to get her to say "baby" and "apple" now.

Awww that’s so adorable “tank ooo” lol. Keep repeating it to her and it will start to sound better, if not it’s still absolutely adorable 🥰. She’s very lucky that you found her and saved her ❤️

My kiwi is same bird as ricco but a girl. She was bad used I bought her as I seen her she is a gorgeous girl was so nervous of me she has said hello once or twice she does come to my hand and take a snack she won't let me handle her but whistles like a champ . She loves my mu. To bits and my daughter summer. Her biggest love is your little man ricco she loves watching him on RU-vid and sends him wolf whistles always. He is a sweet little man lots of love to you all from aberdeen scotland.xx❤

Omg That’s so adorable, Kiwi is so lucky to have you and your loving family. It’s funny you say that about the wolf whistle, as much as I’ve tried to teach Ricco it, he only can do the first part of it. It’s pretty funny. 😂

Awww. Repetition is really important to teach a bird how to talk. That's how my birds learned how to talk! Also, baby birds are more likely to talk over time than adults because babies are inexperienced and can be shaped to learn new things. That's why babies are also easier to train! (I also agree about whistling because if you whistle, birds will pick that up and chances are they won't talk.)
@Riccothegreenpiedirn
@Riccothegreenpiedirn 3 года назад
I agree it can be easier if they are younger, but my female rescue was 16 years old when I got her and she was able to pick up on many whistles I taught her. She never did speak, but I never stopped trying lol. It really does come down to the bird itself, I’ve had many people tell me they have had their birds from a small baby and they never learned to speak ever. My Chico was a much better talker than Ricco and picked up on every word, where as Ricco just says what he likes lol.

Great advice. People should adopt their birds. There are so many awesome and beautiful birds that need homes... They live a very long life, and sometimes things happen and people can't take care of them. I say the same about cats. Adopt a nice senior cat! They're very happy to just be out of the shelter.

Could it be your ringneck parrot is going through the bluffing stage? Can you tell me how old he is? Also they get grumpy and cranky when they are molting or it’s springtime. Did this behaviour just start. Try to think of anything that could’ve caused this behaviour. I do have a video in my playlist about the bluffing stages, ringneck parrots are known to go through it more often than other birds.
@migattenoSam
@migattenoSam 3 года назад
@@Riccothegreenpiedirn i have watched the video But i don't think its the bluffing period. I don't know his exact age as we were given the parrot 2 months ago from someone we know and they didnt had any idea they said its a baby parrot At first i thought its a baby parrot but now i think that she maybe a female one as her feet scales are very hard, beak is red and black more than any baby parrot could have also she is very large in size. Although she is very playful on her own so we let her play and do whatever she's doing

@Riccothegreenpiedirn
@Riccothegreenpiedirn 10 месяцев назад
I never would starve a parrot, it’s not necessary at all. Using food to gain a birds trust or for training is a good way, but it should never be to the point of starvation. Training should also be fun and short throughout the day and never forced otherwise it could brake the bond between you and your bird. Just use your bird’s favourite treats only for training and not otherwise, that’s the only thing that needs to be done.

Hi again I love your video I just have a question for you and Ricco are you the one that made the dring dring sound or did he pick it up from a phone? Some bird say bad words sometime could it be by repitition or just some words come easier than others😊
@Riccothegreenpiedirn
@Riccothegreenpiedirn 3 года назад
Thank you 😊. So the dring dring came from me and I made it up, not a phone. My Chico was the first to learn it over 4 years ago, but he went missing. The reason why parrots will pick up on the bad words is usually because it is said loud and in a different tone than a usual tone that a owner would normally use. Think of ever you have said a bad word or someone around you and how it sounds different because it’s out of anger and loud, this is why birds tend to pick up on it if that makes sense. Hope that answered your question .I forgot to mention that you can teach them sounds by playing it from a recording, they may or may not pick up on it. It really depends if they like what they hear lol.

@Riccothegreenpiedirn
@Riccothegreenpiedirn 3 года назад
Ricco is kind of similar. I think most birds are, unless you constantly have people around. It also comes down to the bird. My Chico was very outgoing and would run to anyone lol. But Ricco not so much. I had my family members always interact with him and use treats and foods to gain his trust. He will still pick me over them, but if I’m not there he will go to them. Just try to include him in things when friends are around and have them gain his trust with foods, treats or toys. It can be more difficult when they get used to only you being around. Ricco also is somewhat fearful of men, but I use his favourite toys to get him to go to my dad, brother or friends. Just find something they like and use that. It will take time, but just keep at it 😊

Are you referring to ringneck parrots specifically or all birds? I’ve seen many female ringneck parrots talk and some males never talk. It really depends on the bird itself. Both my Chico and my Ricco were males, but they are so different in many ways. My Chico was probably one of the best talkers I’ve had, whereas my Ricco not so much. How did you get him to allow you to touch his head? We have a 6 month old female that looks just like Ricco. We got her when she was 8 weeks old. She is still terrified of our hands unless we are offering a treat to step up. She loves kisses on her beak and even initiates it. She flies to us voluntarily. But the second we try to touch her she bites - hard.
@Riccothegreenpiedirn
@Riccothegreenpiedirn 3 года назад
Had she always been like this? Not all birds like to be touched, but I wouldn’t stop trying. It took me 1 full year for Ricco to fully trust me. He would growl at me, bite me just so I wouldn’t touch his head. I would always move slowly and ask him if I can tickle tickle. Now he says tickle tickle whenever I pet him. Have you tried giving her a treat or showing her a treat while trying to pet her? I always moved at Ricco’s pace and allowed him to show me when he was ready . Just takes time and patience, but don’t ever give up. Your little one is still young, just keep working with her 😊
@dhale9089
@dhale9089 3 года назад
@@Riccothegreenpiedirn Yes she's always been like this but of course "always" isn't that long. She's not quite 6 months old. I've tried to give her a treat to be able to touch her but she gets confused and steps up instead. That's the only thing she understands doing has gotten her a treat. When I say no and try to get her to understand I'm trying to pet her she gets frustrated that I won't give her the treat. I've read other places as well it can take a year. Which I'm fine with as long as we get there eventually. I notice she does make tiny bits of progress. Like just in the past couple weeks when I open her cage I don't have to step back and wait for her to come out. Now I can lean into the cage so she can step onto my shoulder. One day she even stepped onto my hand when I offered it. But the next day when I tried she bit my finger so hard it bled. The other thing I've noticed recently is when she's hanging out on my shoulder and I need to brush my hair out of my face she doesn't immediately freak out when she sees my hand approaching near her. She's finally figured out I'm just tucking my hair away and all will be fine! She is super jealous of our other 2 birds too. When we have our cockatiel or conure out she immediately flies over and knocks them out of the way. I've tried to show her how they get head scratchies and snuggles and she can too but she just doesn't understand.
@Riccothegreenpiedirn
@Riccothegreenpiedirn 3 года назад
@@dhale9089 If it’s confusing her with the treats don’t use them. Try to desensitize her a little at a time by placing your hand above her head slowly and pay attention to her body language. Do this as often as you can and lower it each time till you can eventually touch her. It will take time and patience, but she will soon trust you. Had she always been aggressive towards your other birds? She could be going through the bluffing stage if it just started. I’d keep an eye on her with the other birds, the females have been known to kill other birds if they dislike them, especially their own kind. She’s obviously picked you as her person and is most likely trying to protect you from the other birds, if that makes sense. I rescued a female ringneck parrot who nobody else could touch and she only liked males, but she bonded to me instantly. I really didn’t do anything out of the ordinary with her except be myself. I did however get bit twice from her, but that was my mistake from not understanding her body language at the time. They do get pretty moody, aggressive, or cranky when hormonal. But it will pass as well.

@@Riccothegreenpiedirn Ok I'll try that. I saw on the Bird Tricks video that you should never approach a ringneck from above yet I see it in other videos a lot. I do always always watch her around my other 2 birds. The breeder we got her from told me about the danger of trying to breed ringnecks because the female will kill the male if not interested. I was like wow I guess "no means no" to the extreme! Its funny to watch her near my conure though. He thinks he's all tough around my cockatiel despite being smaller yet all she has to do is look at him and open her beak wide and he lowers his head and slithers away! She seems to like both my husband and me pretty much the same. She started to bond with him early on before me which really annoyed me. I really wanted a female. I love my husband, 2 sons, and 2 male birds but I was like I really need a girl in this house! So when she was going for him at first I was like no way! It shifted though when I got her to start stepping up with a treat. It only took like 2 days for her to catch on. Then she seemed to trust me more even without a treat. Now its hard to walk by her without her doing this little dancing shuffle thing like she can't wait for me to get closer. Then she jumps to my shoulder. She's so cute I just really want to give her snuggles like my other two!

@@dhale9089 So with Ricco I would do it slowly and I would talk to him at the same time while watching his body language. I was always below him when he was on his perch or swing, so that could’ve made a difference. I would stop when he would warn me and try again another time, till eventually 1 year later he finally gave in lol. I think if they are above you and they see your hand moving slowly they should get used to it over time, but every bird is different. I don’t think there is a wrong or right , just do what you feel comfortable with and your bird. I’ve also never done clicker training or stick training and was able to always train all my birds with tricks. I’m sure their are many different methods, I say try them all, you have nothing to loose lol. She seems pretty motivated to learn, I would just keep doing what you are doing. I would love to see the interaction with the other birds, I always find it so funny to watch. I think it’s amazing that she has a bond with both you and your husband, it’s very important as well. My female rescue preferred men more, but she bonded with me the most. She was such a cuddle bug. When everyone saw how I could handle her, they were shocked that she was the same bird. They also pick up on things like fear, weaknesses or they just may not like you. When I would go visit her at the store they had her in, she would literally dive bomb this other lady because she didn’t like her lol. They just like who they like sometimes 🤷‍♀️🤣. I’ll do a quick video on how I got Ricco to let me pet him and how I did it, but there is really not much to it. But it might be easier to understand how I did it, but again I say go with what you think your bird is most comfortable with 😊

@Riccothegreenpiedirn 3 года назад
This is the perfect time to start talking to him. It’s never to early,. Especially because he is young, this is the perfect time. He will absorb it all in. You will here him chatter first before words, it’s how they practice. I got Ricco at the age of 6 months old and he started to talk around 9 months old. Keep in mind every bird is different, he may pick up talking sooner or could take longer. Just keep talking to him 😊

@@Pr3ppybrook3please don’t feed him anything with chocolate, you could kill him. Even if he likes eating certain things that are not good for him, you shouldn’t give it to him. It can make him sick slowly without you knowing it. If you’re bird is on a seed diet it’s very important to feed him vegetables and fruits. I’ll send you links to videos I’ve done about diet.
