Shiva Baby made me laugh and cringe so hard at the same time. It’s such a masterclass of what it feels like to be suffocated by your family and friends while also trying to keep your head above water and be kind to yourself. Plus Diana Agron is in it so that alone is worth it. I can’t recommend this movie enough.

I’ve watched like 7 movies on this list. I agree with some inclusions like Sound of Metal which is really underrated. Perfect Blue is really good but exactly underrated as I think anyone who watches anime beyond only the popular seasonal stuff has seen it and The Nice Guys was big among action movie fans when released. I think it's because the dystopian realms of 1984 (and maybe some other pieces from Orwell) and Fahrenheit 451 are quite similar and both focuses on the story of a rebel protagonist(s) under a totalitarian government and their ridiculous rules.

It's a good movie but it shouldn't be mentioned because it was a box office hit, he said he is talking about underrated movies which are good movies people haven't heard of or aka didn't make any money even though the movie is really good. A good example of a underrated movie is the 1995 movie Strange Days, it's a really good movie but when it first came out it was a huge box office failure.

Shiva baby is an excellent thriller. Since it’s low stakes people don’t think of it in that vein but what makes it extra thrilling is that it’s real. Its situations we can all imagine ourselves in. That’s what actually makes it scary as hell.

I appreciate how unapologetic Shiva Baby was in its portrayal of bisexuality and of sex work. So many movies act as those they have to make this big statement about the validity of sex work or the reality of bisexual identities in a binary world, but this movie just made them feel like another aspect of an already painfully authentic experience of this young woman's life.

I think The Nice Guys is actually my favorite film of all time. It is so expertly timed with comedy, filmed gorgeously, perfectly cast, with some of the best production design ever put to screen. Wind River is also pretty high up there for me personally. That movie is super fucking depressing and again expertly made. Very well written story especially of such heavy subject matter and really wish it didn’t fly under so many peoples’ radar.

I think its incredible that a movie as good as The Nice Guys fell under the radar like it did. Its so good, the comedy is like machine gun fire of jokes that are hilarious but never break the tension of the scenes that are meant to be serious. Also its full of memorable scenes and one liners. Huge shame that we never got a sequel, really hope the sort of cult status it has garnered can make it happen some time in the future.

I found Perfect Blue by accident in the anime section of my local video rental shop while I was in college. It blew my mind. I’ve tried to show it to people and they often dismiss it because they aren’t into anime or think it’s fluff. Nobody believes me when I tell them it’s an amazing, dark, twisted mystery. Thanks for highlighting it, more people need to see it.

My personal recommendations would be "Only Lovers Left Alive" (with Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton) and "What Lies Beneath" (Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer) both excellent little gems. C'mon C'mon from last year is severely unnoticed considering it's an A24 release and stars Joaquin Phoenix. It's such a special little film about childhood and about how it can get a bit overwhelming sometimes for children to process their emotions. The film felt like a hug, it's full of love and understanding and compassion for everyone and everything. It's amazing and I'm always surprised by it not getting any award nods or even just twitter hype, felt so overlooked but it deserves so so much more attention. If only you'd placed Shiva at number 7! Was literally just telling my friend about this one, as I'm currently mourning the loss of my grandmother and sitting Shiva. Btw a Shiva isn't a Jewish funeral, it follows the 7 days post the burial, and consists of the children of the deceased who are there all the time (at least in Mizrahi jews) including their children. It gives people who knew the deceased a chance to console the family, help them take care of everything by bringing them food and making sure everyone is comfortable.

There's another movie about Shiva called "This is Where I leave you" with Adam Driver and Tina Fey! That's where I learned about the tradition and it explores the tensions it can cause, but also the heartwarming side of it as well! And it's filmed in a "lighter" way then Shiva Baby seems to be. Might be a good option for those too anxious to watch Shiva Baby😅

You've asked for recommendations so here is mine: "The Fall" by Tarsem Singh (2006) - the visuals, the process of making this movie, the child actress that learned English during filming which was taken into account while making it, the little amount of special effects in the movie (stated by the director)... I saw it kind of on accident on TV (wanted to see it for Lee Pace anyway) and after it ended I wanted to immediately replay to see what I missed. And just to add something form my country, Poland (though it was filmed in Portugal with international cast, in English) - "Imagine" by Andrzej Jakimowski (2012) - a story of a blind man, a teacher for blind kids, who refuses to use the traditional methods of space perception to the point where the kids accuse him of lying when it comes to his blindness.

I have 2 films I watched recently that I think are underrated: 1. Thoroughbreds - it’s one of the first films Anya Taylor-Joy did and is an all around well-crafted film. It’s best to go into it without knowing too much but basically two best friends, one who is a psychopath awaiting trial for animal cruelty and the other a repressed girl who is keeping secrets, plan to kill the latter’s stepfather. It’s pretty witty and sharp and there’s a 6-minute long take towards the end that will have you on the edge of your seat, not just for the story but for how well it’s set up and shot. 2. Rosaline - this movie was recently dumped on Hulu and to my knowledge it hasn’t really made any noise. It’s a satire comedy of Romeo and Juliet told from the point of view of Rosaline, Romeo’s secret girlfriend that he had when he met Juliet. The movie follows Rosaline as she attempts to get Romeo back and inadvertently is the cause behind the major plot points of R&J. Movies like this can get pretty cheesy or just not funny but this managed to maintain most of its humor and fast pace. It has some classic romantic comedy tropes like enemies to lovers and is all around just a really fun film. Kaitlyn Dever plays the lead and she is perfect.

the number 1, which i can never spell properly... i stumbled upon it a year or two ago and thought it was pretty good, like, personally i enjoyed it and it did make me think about stuff. It was somewhat uncanny and awkward in neither good or bad way. My reaction towards Anya Taylor-Joy in it was more like "what the fuck, this woman is everywhere in every damn genre and now here as well?". It was my introduction to Olivia though, which made me to later watch Sound of Metal, and made me stare weirdly in the article listing the cast for something as massive as House of the Dragon just months ago.

one of thee MOST underrated movies in recent history I can think of is Seven Psychopaths - it's about a struggling screenwriter trying to write his next movie but has writer's block, but he gets caught up in the criminal world after his friend kidnaps a crime boss's dog as a con. I have watched that movie multiple times since it's release and just everything about it is so seamless. And the dark humour is genuinely so well crafted and the subtlety and balance of everyone's performances (Colin Ferrell, Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken, Woody Harrelson like come onnn) make for a fantastic and chaotic ride, I don't wanna say much else so I'll leave it there, but seriously I strongly recommend it and wish it got more love! Also The Hunt I think is strongly underrated, The Last Black Man in San Francisco had it's moment for a split second but fell under the radar but it's truly one of my favourite movies in the last few years (and is basically the catalyst for Jonathan Majors recognition now! he is phenomenal in it), Gattaca Happy you mentioned Equilibrium I was obsessed with it as a child too and is definitely something that's worth a rewatch. AND FINALLY SOME RECOGNITION FOR THE NICE GUYS !!!

The story follows this former kid detective (think Nacy Drew, Hardy Boys, etc) after he couldn't solve the case of what happened to his missing friend. Now in his adulthood, he gets a chance to redeem himself after a high school student asks him to solve the murder of her boyfriend. At 14:31. Yes to "Perfect Blue"! That was one head trip of a movie--extremely creepy, but also philosophically deep, exploring the many epistemological strains of what it means for a person to have an identity. Even more impressive, it came out in 1997, well before the internet came up with things like social media and murderous incels. And this movie predicted both so perfectly. Another thing that shocked me about this film--it was 89 minutes long. Incredibly short as far as these types of movies go. I credit the very tight scriptwriting and direction here, which was almost genius level. IMHO one of the best movies ever made in the past 40 years anywhere in the world.

My recommendation is Martha Marcy May Marlene. To this day it’s the most tense, paranoia-inducing movie I’ve ever seen. Watched it in cinemas twice, and both times multiple people in the cinema literally screamed during a certain scene despite the fact that it’s not at all a jump scare, just because of how tightly-wound the movie makes you. Criminally underrated. Also it was the movie that put Elizabeth Olson on the map!

A movie I think is super underrated is Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri. It got a bit of attention at the Oscar’s a few years ago but I don’t see people talk about it much. It’s a great drama about a woman trying to get justice for her daughter’s assault and murder by calling out the police department of her town for not doing enough and we see how her grief leads her and the rest of the town to really messed up and even violent places, and despite the bleak premise it also manages to have great dark comedy throughout. The cast is fantastic, it stars Francis Mcdormand, Sam Rockwell, and Woody Harrelson.

It stars Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikas, with the basic premise of an alcholic woman who, after returning to her hometown, finds that she is somehow controlling a giant kaiju in japan whenever she moves around a playground at a certain time. I had no idea there was a queer African story of any kind that existed and as a queer Nigerian, the accomplishment of Rafiki sounds amazing. I will definitely watch. A VERY underrated movie I would recommend (though I am HIGHLY biased) is 'Queen of Katwe'. It's a Ugandan film about a girl who trains herself to be good at chess until she is one of the best in Africa(I'm 50% sure it's based on a true story). Lupita Nyong'o plays the girl's mum and I think it is one of her most underrated roles ever. I loved the commentary on West African sexism examined from the lens of the main character, her mum and her sister (TW: SA) Edit: I also want to recommend a Nigerian movie adaptation called 'Half of a yellow sun', but as a long time fan of Chimamanda Adichie, that is just my nostalgia talking and the book is much better imo, read that instead

I beg of anyone who reads this to watch Treasure Planet, it was a passion project for the directors since the 80’s and it was finally released on 2002 November 27 (perfect excuse to watch or rewatch it because the 20th anniversary is so soon). It is such a masterpiece, and it’s such a shame that the marketing team did it so dirty. I can’t say much because of legal stuff but it’s marketing designed it to fail because they wanted to cut 2D animation and it worked sadly, hence the cut of 2D animation by Disney in 2004 but luckily none of that effects the actual movie luckily. Dirty mouse business aside, Treasure Planet is about Jim Hawkins who has a personality of gold, and he finds a map to treasure planet (a place that is thought to be just a legend) so once they start a pirate-space boat ride, Jim learns trusts the cook silver like a father figure after Jim’s real father left and never came back and I can’t say a whole lot after the first like half an hour because there is so many good twists and even a character you don’t find out about until an hour in. It has the best animation and visuals I’ve ever seen, the best story, the best characters, the best comedy not too much and not too little, the best everything. You can take it as an absolute joke or completely serious and it works both ways. Seriously I beg of you to watch this you won’t regret it, for fucks sake after it’s marketing team trying to make it fail, it still got awards and it still has a following and community TWO DECADES LATER.

I feel like most people have never even heard of Equilibrium! This is my go-to answer for “what’s your favorite movie” (when people won’t let me say “the LOTR trilogy”). It’s really beautifully filmed. While it definitely takes inspiration from 1984, you can also see that it was heavily influenced by other classic dystopian stories like Brave New World and Fahrenheit 451. (It’d probably be a fun comparative analysis project to dissect all four stories.)

Recommendation - Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium. It's insane to me how underrated it is. It's a comedy-drama starring Dustin Hoffman and Natalie Portman about a magical toy store apprentice who got promoted to manager by the owner, and It's genuinely one of the most heartfelt and inspiring movies I've ever seen. It's not perfect, but I personally think it's great and have an amazing message about self growth and self improvement. Also the directing, editing and cinematography are well done, the score is great and Portman and Hoffman are amazing in it. If I had to summarise it in one sentence I would call it a live action early 2000's Pixar movie, made by Wes Anderson and Edgar Wright. If that doesn't convinces you to check it out, I don't know what will.

Some movies I’d recommend: Colossal - an American woman discovers that a monster in Seoul is mimicking her movements exactly. It has such a ridiculous premise but pulls it off so well, in live action no less. Coherence - a group of friends gather for a dinner party, but a passing comet makes spooky events happen. It’s a short movie, so I can’t say much more without spoiling it, but for a low-budget film it’s really eerie and well-acted. What Happened to Monday - a group of septuplet girls are forced to pretend to be one person under a strict one-child policy. Paradise Hills - girls of rich families are sent to an island to be retrained into who their families want them to be. It’s more of a teen movie, so it’s a bit overly simplistic, but the movie’s visuals are beautiful.

It may not be as underrated as some of the picks you've put here, but Andhadhun (2018) is just incredible. The movie follows a pianist who is faking blindess for musical inspiration. He falls in love with a girl, and plays gigs at her father's restaurant. One day, a retired actor notices his talents invites him to play at his wedding anniversary. He gets there and he gets greeted by the actor's wife, who is convinced that the pianist is blind, who asks him to play for her. As he starts playing, he witnesses a murder that will turn his life upside down in ways he could never imagine. What follows is a dark comedy mystery thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. This movie is simply brilliant. A must watch.

I absolutely suggest Beasts of the Southern Wild/Les Bêtes du Sud Sauvage by Benh Zeitlin. I haven't heard a lot of people talk about it and it was a pick from my friend group in university. We were all cinema students and so we decided to share movies we found on the side and thought the others needed to see. A friend shared it and I enjoyed this movie so much. It's so interesting and smart, with both emotional intelligence and incredible cinematography. It won Sundance's pick in 2012 if that counts for you. It's about a little kid named Hushpuppy who lives in the Bayou with her dad, and they live in a community of marginalised people who live on the water, on boats and barges and floating platforms. They have their own school, their own government system, and it has a lot of illusions and visual metaphors. The drama revolves a lot about how the dam that keeps water from their community will cease functioning and threaten them. I loved this movie, all from Hushpuppy's perspective, with themes of race and inclusion and living on your own and building a community.

Some recomendations, that I think you would enjoy: 1. ARQ - it has masterfully executed time loop. I think that's already enough :) 2. Coherence - I don't know how to describe it without spoiling, but it has a group of friends, a misterius comet and a lot of secrets and confrontations. Great brain teaser. 3. Perfetti sconosciuti, or Perfect Strangers - again, a group of friends, secrets and confrontations, but this time without any fantastic elements, just talking, with a single twist - all your phone interactions during the dinner must be done publicly. Great conversations, and amazing ending, that hits you in waves, as you digest it. 4. Significant Other - beautiful cinematography and sound design. But the story is minblowingly elegant and effective. I can't say anything specific, since it'll spoil the movie. The less you know about, the better the impact. But it's one of the best movies I saw for a long time and would recommend to everyone!
