The most important rule of all: always save manually. It doesn't matter if the game autosaves or let's you accept an automated save. Always save manually!
1. The new gun you just acquired from the boss will always be weaker in your hands, somehow. 2. The new gun you just acquired will be a critical part of defeating the next boss you encounter.
Except for games like Doom, where the new gun you just got would have perfectly exploited the weaknesses of the boss you just killed, in which case the boss is now a mini-boss.
One "rule" that when it is broken annoys me is the button for jumping. Usually, it placed on the X button (on Playstation controllers) but then comes games such as Kingdom Hearts and says "actually no... ). Totally breaks your muscle memory that you had for years.
That’s cuz PS has X as the primary select button in the US/UK versions of the games. In the Japanese versions as well as Nintendo releases the jump and attack buttons are switched
Another unwritten rule in gaming is this. In games mostly action/RPGS where you have the ability to heal your health without using items you save the use of that healing ability until you're at low health.
I have broken the cycle. I forced myself to use items. The training was gruelling, and I had bouts of insanity. Pushing against instinct, against the very fiber of my being, I finally broke through. But muh munkee brain dun did damaj. Realizing that I cannot fight my inner-hoarder, I instead was enlightened with the epiphany that can save us all. Never use an item. Until you have *two.* Then use that sum'bit*h. Always save 1 of a thing. Use the others freely. Enjoy the contents of Santa's bag, while still keeping your inner-grinch happy. And to those of you unclean heathens who don't see the truth of my philosophy, and cry out "but.... but... what happens when you need 3, or 5, or 10 of a thing for a quest?" To you pathetic lost souls, I say... Bad. *Boops nose with newspaper.* Stop making valid points.
Forgot to add: save at least twice with a manual save before you close out a game as well as often as possible, just in case. This is most important in something like a JRPG without autosave where you could lose hours of progress because you didn't save. Recently lost about 4 hours of progress in FF7 classic and had to redo the sections from the first Juno entry to the Cosmo Canyon because I got wiped in the Canyon because of that stupid spike trap and a unlucky back attack. Save often.
i dont know the MP rules since hardly play much MP games, but i can confirm i am one of those who save in Arena, go wrong way and a massive elixir hoarder in FF.
Another addendum to saving: if you come across a generous amount of healing items/weapon upgrades/ammo or shops that sell the above, all in one small area that's directly on your path, SAVE. This is always a sign there's either a boss encounter or a point of no return just ahead.
IIRC sparing the Assassin’s Creed Origins Chicken was a good move - I seem to remember getting attacked by a bunch after I got too close and swung back at the solo one that kept pecking me
Have you seen the big bad before? They've got multiple phases, this is generally it but the confirmed version is "have you already fought the big bad?" then yeah, there's multiple phases!
My lukewarm takes: 10. Go the wrong way first - I always overthink this one because I'm afraid of missing things (provided there aren't markers telling me exactly where I need to go next). I will literally inch myself down paths sometimes out of fear of triggering a cutscene before I went the alternative route that just turned out to contain a dead-end with some supplies haha. I blame a moment in Max Payne 3 for this anxiety; I don't remember the specific point, but there was a time I went down a path that triggered a cutscene that brought me out of the area, and the other route led to a pretty important item I needed. And there was no way for me to go back to it. 8. Non-verbal communication - My favorite of these is always taking a shot at something to indicate to someone that that's where they should/need to go. Super simple and helpful. 7. Hoard everything - I'm a master hoarder and I always sort of regret it at the end haha. Not a single lie detected in this entry. 6. Saving before arenas - To extend that, it's not even always that the arena itself has a lot of resources in it that tips us off to a boss fight. FPS games have normalized the short corridor packed with health and ammo items that we've all learned means we're about to enter a boss fight, so make sure we have our affairs in order haha. 3. If no one sees you stealing, it's not stealing - I was expecting some variation of "loot everything," and there it is haha. I loved how Ragnarok made so many quips about how Kratos loves to loot everything, and others act like he's a weirdo or thief for doing it haha. 2. Don't kill the chickens - And as Shadow Warrior as taught us, also REALLY don't kill the rabbits. 1. The clues to a second stage boss fight - Another clue: you're playing a Resident Evil game haha. Another clue is often that the boss is too easy and/or not aggressive enough. You know they're about to bust out a better form.
Re: fall damage, it was a rude awakening when I fell off something in LOTRO, landed with a sickening crunch, and then hobbled for the next little while. Honestly, even without the hit point hit, the sound and effect of my bones breaking hurt.
08:12 The second phase boss fight also applies to when you fight a boss and its health seems to he going down a little quicker than usual, or the boss seems a little too easy.
I have been breaking myself of this rule. If you take note you will die just as often to over-reloading as you will to needing to reload, just at different points in the firefight. I prefer to be able to shoot back even if only for a few rounds then be in a place where I cannot shoot back.
Also, something I do all the time, is that u should save the game EVERY darn time there is a calm or quiet moment, cuz who knows? You might die anytime anywhere unexpectedly and then you wish u would have saved in that very quiet and peaceful moment

Animal companions are more important than non-animal companions. Do whatever you can to keep your four legged friends alive in video games, because they'll return the favor when it really counts.
One time I was playing a mobile multiplayer shooter and this guy did a "certain" non verbal communication on me. What happened next was gold. Everyone on that players team quit the match and left him totally alone. My team made that players match a living hell.
I TRIED to use items up in FF7 Remake, but the action economy of ATB means I'm spending an opportunity to do something spectacular in order to quaff a minor potion instead.
In Oblivion I loved Alchemy and created thousands of potions to the point that I actually became over encumbered due to how many I had. Had to drop over 5000 just to be able to move again.
I remember in Fable for the armor seller in Bowerstone finding the joy of just standing behind a door in just the right stop to steal high price item and them n resell an item piece over & over for a couple of in game days … 2-3 hours to quickly get $100,000 😅 👍🏻 .. they guy is totally looking at you but because of the door they cannot see you steal … it’s funny because he is all to happy to buy it from you over and over 😅
It's taken me a long time to get over the hoarding thing in RPGs. That "rather have it and not need it" mentality is smart but it's honestly more rewarding to just use everything.

Any really nice and solicitous quest giver is planning on screwing you over. If you are getting Ned Flanders vibes up front, expect a betrayal / ambush on the back end of their quest.
The be a hoarder rule is something I've adjusted I'll sell genuinely useless items all stack and all, BUT I better be getting something worthwhile if I'm doing that

Grrrr. Stealing in games bugs me. Especially when it makes no sense. I wandered into a bandit camp. The bandits attack me and I kill them all in self defence. But when I look in the treasure chest that now BELONGS TO NOBODY BECAUSE THEY'RE ALL WORM FOOD, it still lusts the contents as stealing! Ummm.....what?!? 🤣 From f**king whom?!
The rules on communication are actually the most important rule here there have been many times when I just try to say hello to people and they think they're getting tea bagged on even though they're not dead.
Personal example for Number 3. Star Wars KOTOR 2. The storage room to the back left and artifact room to the front left during the Palace Assault. More often than not, not only does the artifact room have Jedi relics that you may only get some of, I forget, but so does the aforementioned storage room.
5:56 Please don't save during a jump, it can end with you in a death-loop. I've had a game auto-save whilst jumping off a cliff and it didn't end well, after many attempts I had to restart the mission to get out of it. It was kinda funny at first but the game didn't have manual saves.
Running 3 rotating Manual saves "just incase" you're in a bad spot, on top of a quicksave and autosave, with preferably 3 autosaves minimum as well. We have all only had that one save where the grenade blew up 1s later and the last autosave was 45mins ago at the start of the map...how many hours lost until you use the autosave, hint its usually longer than the 45 mins it would take to get back 🤣
Big open rooms means boss fight. If you're in a hallway and you see you're about to enter an open space. Heal, fix your set up, reload, whatever. It's about to go down!
Always check the chickens. Yea they *might* freak out, call a horde, but some games give you good loot! You survived a poultry pounding. Treat it like testing for fall dmg. Always check the chickens.
Number 10: A.B.R. (Always Be Reloading) Just taken down a hard boss? Reload! Just taken down a easy boss? Reload! Just taken down a minion? Reload! Blew up a piece of environment? Reload! Have a thousand round magazine?....Shot one bullet?....Reload! Just like in real life! Haven't you ever shot a gun, changed out a half empty magazine, only to find that EVERY half empty magazine miraculously combines with all the others to ensure you never have a empty mag. Lol

3:57 this is not always the care or won't be used the first time you see it. Generation zero has a massive aren like arena in the north. Big enough you can see it on the map. As of right now...there's nothing in there. Save for a computer, turned over cars, downed jet, and loads of 100 ft deep hole's all over the place. One hole even has a cavern in it
Strangers of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origins has barrels with flame symbols on them so I avoided getting near them but ended up hitting one by accident and expected the worst but.... Nothing happened

If it's green, that will kill you buddy. - Fire: Am I a Dragonskinned Hero, or is this going to hurt? - Friendly Fire: Step 1, try and shoot your team/NPC. If your gun won't fire then you're done. If not, Step 2, did it hurt them? If yes, Step 3, guilt! - Mirrors: Lets really test the graphics out on this puppy! - Precariously placed NPCs: Bit more specific, but if I can walk into an NPC and move them, and there happens to be a ledge near by, well one of us is going to have a bad day. - Cooking Grenades: Pull pin. Count to 3. Count to 5. Continue counting while you wonder around a bit. Throw grenade a safe distance away. Examine this plan for any explosive errors. - Motorcycles: A personal one to finish - if I can get on a motrocycle, can I put on a helmet? EXtra points if doing so reduces any crash damage. Never save during the fall. lol... I've been victim to games that have respawned me in the middle of the action that killed me in the first place. Infinite death loop. Not such a big deal in most modern games with multiple save files but a game breaker that meant restarting the entire game in some older titles.
It annoys me to no end when you have a game like AC Valhalla... where you have many items identified in game as just junk to be sold to earn you money, so you sell it, and then you come to a place that gives you a permanent boost if you just had those 10 fish you sold to the last vendor.
I'd say it's okay for red barrels not to explode as long as NOTHING explodes. It's when some red things explode and others don't that we have a real problem. As always, the key is consistency.
Stealing. I think half the stock of our Submarine in Barotrauma was stollen. They've implemented a system where if you deconstruct a stollen item, the resources you get back are also marked as stollen, and if you craft a new item from those stollen components, the new item is also marked as stollen... So most of the stuff on our sub is stillen, because most of the stuff was made from at least one stollen component, if it wasn't just outright stollen itself. It's hard to tell if something is or is not stollen, because it's only marked if you're in an area with a faction that the item was stollen from.
It would be fun to do one of these lists for bioware games, witcher, or branching path RPGs in general. I always save before any dialogue choice in case I have to redo it... Or before personal time with your favorite companion 😉

Fall damage? I was saving back in the days of 1980s text adventures. Never sure whether typing JUMP led to a new area, was a handy shortcut or ended the game in four letters.
Something I always do. One, always try to interact with cats and dogs. I love animals, sue me. Two, always talk to NPCs until they repeat dialogue. You might get important information.
Return to an overpowered enemy that killed you for revenge once you become stronger. So many times, have I gotten killed by a strong enemy only for me to return and pay them back for the crap they put me through.
When I decided to dabble back into online gaming a few years back, some player was raging about me bagging when all I was doing was using crouch like I always did. I had no idea what they were talking about like what? I can't just crouch anymore huh? Ok internet people haha.
All of the houses you can purchase/build in Skyrim filled with stuff I actually organized and then never used. Also, how did you survive that fall @5:11 in Witcher 3. Most of the time I died was because I forgot fall damage was a thing.
I don't follow number 3. If my character is good then I don't make them steal without a good reason ie stealing the imperial missive in Skyrim's "missing in action" quest.
I feel like an unspoken rule of Fire emblem games is to always make sure your units have at least decent weapon durability and physical healing items; especially if your speed running the game.
"Don't kill chicken" Except for a few games like any Counter Strike for quick target practice & Fortnite when you need that meat to heal up for yourself or your squadmates!
