These hard rules lists are always funny because if you wait long enough you will see the people saying "don't, never, get rid of, etc." adopting some version of what they banned. If you have the ability you can make almost anything stylish. Even more strange is that the people who make these lists seem almost oblivious to the fact that STYLES CHANGE AND ARE CYCLICAL! Yes, you have timeless looks like a white tee, dark jeans and loafers/converse. But, do we really want everyone adopting the exact same thing? It's almost as if they don't recognize that by having a hard list of do's and don'ts they are inadvertently establishing a uniform whicb goes against everything that style is.
Worn out graphics tees, faded jeans, faded belts, white socks, white belts, and acid wash anything, are actually pretty fashionable now, they just don't individually go with your preppy type fashion. I've seen them worn beautifully with the laid back, casual, sometimes retro style. Everything else I can agree on though haha.
This channel just reinforces that old concept that men are hopeless when it comes to fashion and style and need a woman to tell them what to wear. Please it's 2019...
Faded, worn out, old, faded, acid washed, out of style, looks like an old Nike sweat sock. Sounds like my wife, and the Goodwill does not take her, So I am going to throw her out. Thank you for the advice.
I think so many people feel bad about throwing away things because they just see it as throwing away money. Even though I don''t have issues with donating my old clothes as I revamp my wardrobe, it does feel make me uncomfortable thinking about the environmental effects of how people treat clothing. It's not completely related but just something I was thinking about when watching the video. Edit: It would be really fun to see you guys do a video about fashion things you disagree on. It'd help drive the point that at the end of the day, fashion is subjective (but style is forever)!
That environment aspect is a point. Probably choosing and buying more smart and not like every season the newest stuff a good amount of money could be saved and also has a positive impact on the environment. Especially for the better quality (and so often more expensive) items the more versatile shopping and not too much current style dependent is a good idea.
''That's not trendy any more, throw it away'': I really don't understand this mentality and it honestly makes me upset. I mean, how can something look good for a while then magically stop looking good? just because not everyone is wearing it now?
And let's not just be okay with calling them dad caps. Never heard that before. It's the type of cap an adult should wear. Unless you're playing baseball or under 20 you shouldn't be wearing those huge crowned caps with flat bills.
Nooooooo, Ashley, telling men to choose a hideous fedora which is sinonymous with neckbeard having manchildren over a dad cap which is endorsed by GQ, fashionbeans, and vogue is a no go
Swagger Gentleman If you are one of the very few men who have the money ( because a classic wide brim fedora is very expensive) and the style to wear a fedora or panama without looking very dated and some how avoid the connotation they carry in most areas today, then do it. It can be very elegant sartorial look, but to claim they are some how easier to pull off then a dad cap which basically looks fine on everyone is just a lie.
john c bro I have the style but not the money, so totally got the vibes there. I personally keep a nice plain black baseball cap for bad hair days so I would suggest everybody to go for that. However dad caps: if they are clean and subtle, sure bro why not after all style is how you wanna portray yourself to the world and nobody has the right to question that.❤
Exhibit A- For not following some random 30 something female who feels her opinion matters. Honestly men or women shouldn't ever wear anything simply because they think the opposite sex will "like it". People should wear clothes they like and that they feel comfortable and confident in, that's really all that matters. People who try to chase fashion trends are simply brain dead and probably need some retraining on life.
Noah To be honest, the advice given is their opinion. Fashion is subjective and varies greatly throughout various cultures and regions in the world. So to say or to imply that what they're saying makes someone "look good" or makes someone "generally attractive" isn't necessarily right. I've seen or been around friends from the Caribbean and the friends from the African continent that rock Jorts and it looks 🔥 🔥. They've also rocked white loafers, white belts and it looks 🔥 with their outfits. They have zero difficulty "pulling" or attracting the opposite sex. They frequently get compliments from the opposite sex for such choices. With that being said, I agree with most of this list. (Anyone with two brain cells will) But to make generalizations or to blatantly say something doesn't look good because you don't like it or can't pull it off (as she did with bracelets, white loafers, jorts, white belts, dad hats) is asinine.
@@lilsainterico28 Jamerican 28 I've also learnt over time that we shouldn't judge or criticise people these days because everything we wear is from our own opinions and backgrounds so to just say we must not own a particular item according to a particular style is definitely not right. Everyone's decisions and preferences should be respected. And how did certain items, like much of the items in the video, become popular enough to continue to be made if they shouldn't be owned by people. I know it's all subjective and we gotta acknowledge that too.
What I love to do with old clothes that do not look their best is to wear them at home. That way I don't have to throw away my well-loved pair of faded chinos or whatever. Still, I throw away shirts that have yellow stains, they are gross
don't know where in Europe you go for summer, but it sounds like you went to something baltic or eastern europe.... don't get your fashion inspiration over there.
Yeah, she can keep her “trendy” fashions to herself. Most of my socks that are not for work are white Adidas quarter socks. They look the best with my shoes.
#4. I have a pair of tony lama boots i got in 1982, they are worn as hell but still fit like the day I bought them. I’m not tossing them just because some little twit can’t bear to look at them.
Wow! I must be Mr. Perfect to this nice lady as far as my wardrobe is concerned. No problems here and hey, I'm 56 years old. Not bad if I say so myself! LOL
Agreed. It had the place on the least even if it was a bonus. I mean, if white loafers and square-toed shoes made it... Every time I go to Costco I want to flip up the table with cargo shorts.
jimmy brown no, just throw out the things that really make you look ridiculous. Those try hards who think they are pulling it of and really nobody agrees. It’s just a bit sad.
I think white socks are okay with black or blue jeans ... and black or brown leather loafers. I am referring to a retro Buddy Holly look. Maybe with a well fitting sport coat. Very specific.
jack chino I used to wear them too; but now I always wear light grey it looks better and doesn't grap attention like white ones. Not to say that white ones are bad; but almost most of us are wearing jeans; which is probably in blue or maybe light blue or black; the contrast between the white and these colors will make them look bad. Try light grey; grey; light blue socks and you will thank me.
Get dirty too easily if you don't wear shoes indoors w/o some kind of house shoe. You stick out as American overseas when most other cultures rarely if ever wear white socks.
No white socks at all? What are you talking about? Black sports socks look terrible, even when professional tennis players wear them. Black trainer socks look hideous. White is best for these.
I watched few videos on youtube showing how to age leather jackets, t-shirts, jeans and shoes. These guys are getting paid 10 to 50 times higher than the original prices to age them properly. Worn out, rustic, and older looking cloths from head to toes is what they do for a living. Check them out and type worn clothing.
Some of those items I would not throw out, but keep to use when doing things like painting, washing the car, and the odd and ends around the home stuff.
Agree with 13 points except white sox and briefs. Some guys need all the support they can get that can't even be found in boxer briefs. The pendulum effect of boxers is too irritating and sometimes painful.
Square-toed shoes are OK, I've got two pairs of dressy ones and they fit/feel great. White socks; definitely no over-the-calf styles, but short ankle ones are OK; just make sure they are not dingy, gray, worn out white socks. Worn out jeans are a no-no? heck they're just getting comfy when the white areas appear at the wear points!.
Cotton has a MASSIVE carbon footprint. I feel like this encourages making it larger. Donate it. Upcycle it. Sell it. But don't just throw it out. Please. I promise someone needs it and every garment thrown away makes it larger. Also. People have different definitions of what makes one "a man." And I feel like this video has a condescending tone.
Very true. You can definitely donate it. I agree with everything you said. I stopped following these guys because they convey the same “this is what makes you a man” tone in every video.
Question...I have white motorcycle jacket - short waist, long in the sleeve with a thin red and blue stripe that goes around arms and across the chest. It was given to me as a gift from my father (no longer here), I'm uncertain "how to wear" this out or...do I want to wear this out? Should I just give the coat away?
Good list, but sorry Ashley I'm keeping my white running socks until they're ready to replace! I already look like such a sweaty mess when I run that I don't think many people I pass are too concerned about what's on my feet...they're more worried about just getting out of my way!
If everyone threw all these items out, and replaced them with what is "approved of" everyone would look the same. Where is the fun in that? I like the videos, but the lists of things to get rid of is extremely subjective. Some are obvious choices that should have never been a trend, but that is what will always suck about trends, they are expected to expire. Something timeless would never be considered trendy. Rock what you like regardless.
Not everyone looks the same; you can already put people in the categories of "thin men", "heavy-built men", and "muscular men", as well as warm, neutral, or cold skin tones, oval, triangle, or squared face, and fine or thick hair (or bald). And when you've done that, there's a lot of colors to choose from, and even if we only mention the two most popular styles (namely street style and dapper look), then there's a lot of different items to choose from, and very few decide to go with everything.
Hmmm,.I always wear dark socks in winter or cold weather or wearing pants but in summer when wearing shorts, if I wear socks at all, its the white ones that go up no higher than my ankle...tennis socks? bobby socks? not sure what they;re called. Is that okay?
I agree on most of what you said except the boot cut jeans, and I like the idea of white loafers with the white belt. Everything else you mentioned to throw out, I would and wouldn't buy them in the first place.
I highly disagree with the white socks. If you’re involved in the blue collar/construction workforce, white socks are probably the most common and best option because they don’t absorb as much heat as black ones do. And if you play sports such as basketball or soccer, you’re always gonna use long, white socks for the same reason. And if you’re going for a look in which you’ll probably never expose your socks like wearing boots, then I don’t see the problem with them being thrown away
AWxInc I use them for casual wear all the time, but I make sure that they’re always covered if they’re tube socks. I have regular low cut socks that aren’t no show, but are never seen when I wear certain shoes
if you are in the construction industry, the color of your socks usually wouldn't have any bearing since your boots would be taller than the socks... unless you are going for that 70's NBA look with the knee high socks
100% agree with everything, but white socks might be a stretch. I assume you are referring to crew socks, because I have plenty of low cut and no show socks in white. I tend to agree that white crew socks are difficult to style, but it can be done with more trendy athletic leisure outfits. Not my thing though. I still have a few pair of white crew socks and I solely wear them when wearing high boots, where no one will see them.
Keeping my dad hat. Wearing it the right way, not that sloppy mess she showed Kanye in. Jorts are not quite out yet, have to be at the knee or just above. Unless your one of those who need to show your massive fit thighs. Also keeping my white belt. Because men with real fashion can break some of the rules when they are above basic fashion. Everything else, common sense if you follow or enjoy fashion.
If you're like me (circa 2016), you'd be like "who are these people and why should I listen to them? Not my acid washed jeans!" Let me tell you over the course of 2 years listening to Ashley's advice has changed my life subsequently from just changing my style/wardrobe. Listen to her when she tells you to throw away those beads! Everyone, I mean everyone from the current women in my life, to the women entering my life, coworkers, Ig followers, strangers... all have complimented me on my look and character confidence. She knows what she's talking about people!
Embroidered jeans look like a walking billboard advertising that the person has a sexually transmitted disease they caught south of the border on spring break . You guys nailed it on that one .
I want the leisure suit to come back. I had one in 1976 and they went out with the seventies. I read that retro seventies fashions are coming back for this new decade and sideburns, which were popular in the seventies, are coming back.
White socks have no dyes, so if you have an injury while exercising, you don't risk dye going in the wound. It's always seemed like a stretch, and most long distance runners use special compression socks.
that's all NYC style ... what's about your Stetson when you live in Texas or your fur hat when you live in Kamchatka / Siberia or in Anchorage? Where I live it is sometimes raining cats and dogs in winter, so what about my rubber boots and in summer it can easily be almost 40 C / 104 F - all men wear shorts here in summer, except in offices, but there they still wear short sleeve shirts. A dark busines suit would literally cook you (many offices and public buildings have neither air conditioning nor proper heating here) ... Dad hats are a must in Florida, California and New South Wales ... Tislijiet
I will continue to wear my bootcut jeans with my Engineer boots and my cowboy boots, it is a bad ass look and one that others should try, i watch the as videos to remind me why I don’t listen to their advise, where what you want when you want, and be confident
NO!! socks should never be worn with sandals and I'm sure Ashley has said so herself. I think it should be made a criminal offence worldwide and police given the power to confiscate the socks of any offenders.
Good on you for being involved in various sport but it was only a half serious comment, nothing to apologise for. I don't play ball sports but I am a runner and live in the UK. Enjoy your sport, you must be fit.
No white belt!! I did not know that structured baseball caps were OK!! I did not know that you cannot wear white socks even when you are going to the gym!!
