Actually, the developer of ET was very ambitious. He's basically admitted that if he was wiser, he wouldn't have done so. He did accept the project, and the completion date.
And let's not overlook the fact that the developer is not entirely at fault as Atari - probably in a vain assumption that E.T. would be a system seller - manufactured more cartridges than 2600s available, which is ultimately the financial reason why the crash of 1983 happened.
If he was wiser, he wouldn't have done so WHAT? You said he was ambitious, but if he was wiser he wouldn't have done so. But there is no context as to what "so" is referring to. What do you mean he wouldn't have done? He wouldn't have made the game? Or he wouldn't have made it so complex? Your sentence structure makes the meaning of "so" completely ambiguous, which makes your "actually" (pushing glasses up on nose) attempt as fact correction meaningless. You didn't specify what the developer wouldn't have done. So you're outing yourself as "that guy" while not actually pointing out a single fact except that the dev was ambitious (which is obvious) Please complete your nerd degree by telling all us dunderheads what the dev "wouldn't have done so"
@@epremier20050well, Atari games had been getting shitty for a number of years. It's not all on e.t. look at how bad the Alien game was. Look at the fact that the two consoles (5600 and 7800) kinda flopped. Look at how bad the Atari port of pacman was, and the fact that third party pacman knockoffs actually did a better job of recreating the arcade pacman experience. It wasn't all on Atari for making too many e.t. cartridges. As someone who was alive when this happened, I can say that both triple jump and you commenters are taking the simple "let's not do very much research" approach to ascribing reasons for the crash. Atari had been fucking up for years before e.t. E.t. was simply one more nail in the coffin, albeit a very expensive one. I see people constantly harping on triplejump for poor research, but your "correction" proves that you didn't do enough research either. Atari had been pulling expensive boners long before e.t. they had been dropping the ball year after year.
@@Boogie_the_cat In order to understand, you'd have to watch the video. That would provide sufficient context. But in short, the developer was very ambitious, so he accepted an excessively tight schedule - a few days, IIRC. He was not forced into it. He thought himself smarter than he was, as that was indeed far too tight a schedule. As such, he sees working on this project as being foolish in hindsight.
I had to ask Siri what “iniquitous” means . FYI it means grossly unfair and morally wrong. I’m definitely going to use that word next time I want to look way smarter than I really am.
got to meet the Reservoir Dogs developers at PAX East a few years back. 2016. since i was there with another developer, we all got drunk and played games after the show ended for the day. those guys....man, i could tell they had to be drunk to talk confidently about the game. weird bit of networking moment, but here we are.
I still remember the Robocop arcade cabinet that was only at the county fair and at an arcade in a seedy part of town. Because of these things, i rarely was able to play it but damn was it fun! Sure it was just a side scrolling shooter like Rolling Thunder and those type of games but it looked great and i thought it was fun!
I never comment, but seriously well done guys! It finally feels like you're getting the followers you've deserved since the name redacted days. Keep up the great work and well done.
Fun fact about LJN and the different developers actually behind the games Rare are the ones who created the Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Nightmare on Elm, and Beetlejuice games (yes, THAT Rare!)
I’m glad Empire Strikes Back for the Atari 2600 got a shoutout, however briefly. My earliest gaming memories are of playing that and ET on the 2600 when I was about four and absolutely hating them. Not long after that my grandmother bought us an NES, and the Atari went on to live in a box in our basement until it was destroyed in a flood during the early ‘90s.
Any one else remember the Westworld Video Game that came out in the 2000's based on the 70's movie? Only worst then its bad FPS gameplay was the game destroying Bugs ,
I hate that, I don't blame ET for Atari going down. It was from years of bad business. They didn't have any QT nor had anything resembling it. So that let a flood of awful games hit the consumers which hurt the 2600.
Terminator 2 Judgment Day for the SNES. The bar level, aka level one was painful but I had hopes things would get better. Then came the first driving section.
E.T. gets so much hate, which I find baffling since I beat it when I was 5. You had to build a phone while escaping the fbi. Then you went to the pickup spot. That was it but hey Atari game.
I thought a "Tie-In" game is a game that ties in with the release of the film. Not something based on the licence years later. 'Alien 3' is a tie in. 'Reservoir Dogs' is not. Am I wrong?
Not really a movie tie-in but The Simpsons has had so many bad games. The classic four player arcade brawler was the only one that wasn't terrible. How they can get one game so right and then spend the next three decades churning out hot garbage is beyond me.
That was possibly the stupidest storyline in the history of professional wrestling, and that includes anything Vince Russo ever came up with. The games were masterpieces compared to that.
To be fair Reservoir Dogs for the PS2 actually wasn’t a bad game so a decent game could be made from the license. Never played Bloody Days but I can tell how bad it is.
Actually the Commodore 64, Amstrad and Spectrum versions of Robocop are considered pretty good games. Ocean got the rights for the movie for only $20,000 because they bought them early and the filmmakers didn't believe that the film would become very successful. Then they made millions.
speaking of RoboCop games: Larry Bundy Jr mentioned a RoboCop game for home computers in the 80s (I think it was the Amiga, though I could be wrong). the game itself was considered ahead of its time, but it wouldn't work unless you plugged in this "dongle" that came with the game, in a half-assed attempt to fight piracy. this idea basically ruined the game's sales, and the developers decided not to use that again for any of their future releases.
The original Robocop arcade game and its sequel are fantastic. And Alien 3 on the Sega Megadrive & Super Nintendo are also great so I cant agree 100% with this list as they're outright omitted. It's like saying Street Fighter 2 is crap & one of the worst one on one beat 'em ups because the Gameboy Advance version was terrible?
The worst movie video game that i've ever played was Toys for the SNES and Sega Genesis. Based on the movie with Robin Williams, you control a character using various toys to disarm traps, obstacles and other deadly hostile toys. More than half the time, you won't know where the hell you'll be going, a majority of the weapons are useless and you'll die quicker than you can figure out how to use a toy to attack back! And then the game over screen where you hear the general guffawing in victory as you read a report of your demise, followed with the general guffawing AGAIN followed by a final score screen all with some dreadful music playing in a loop!
Star Wars Kinect wasn't THAT bad, that crappy Highlander game should've been on here instead, it's a game the devs admitted they made awful on purpose due to how expensive the license as if they'd actually made a good game and it sold well it would've bankrupted them.
I generally like this channel but damn, saying the Rambo series is shit AND then falsely claiming ET was the reason behind the fall of Atari (it was Pacman, a slew of shovelware and some terrible corporate) just reeks of bad opinions and bad research lol
I actually enjoyed the Rambo (360) and Miami Vice (Xbox) games. On the other hand Charlies Angles (GC, PS2), Bevery Hills Cop (PS2), Igor the Game (DS) and Planet of the Apes (PS1, PC, GBA, GBC) were terrible.
LJN honestly shoulda been #1 considering their whole catalog is just awful, I mean I get that they didn’t actually develop the games but they still tested, thought it was good, and released it
