In London, 42-year-old Tina is desperate to tackle the hoard of family memorabilia that has gathered over the decades in the home she has lived in since she was a child.
With cuddly toys still cluttering up her bedroom and the wardrobes overflowing with her parents' clothes, Tina needs help so that she can move on from the house and the memories which fill it.
In Scotland, 48-year-old mum of two Liz is clashing with her family about the vast mountain of possessions which she has crammed into the living and dining room of their home.

Yes. For me I became the 'custodian' of many things belonging to my parents after they both died a few years ago. It is what to do with all the photos. I have sorted through and given to siblings but what to do with the rest? There are their wedding photos, from their honeymoon etc. To throw them in the bin just doesn't seem right, but at the same time I do not want to leave 'stuff' for my kids to have to deal with.

It broke my heart when she screamed at her daughter, "You're just binning my memories. It's my house and my stuff! " She's totally forgotten that it's her daughter's house as well, and her daughter's memories that are there. It's the house she grew up in. The fact that she was screaming at her daughter over a manky old football program which was "irreplaceable" and she couldn't see her daughter in front of her, who is the real irreplaceable thing in her life, infuriates me. Her daughter is so understanding and calm.

True story: I have hoarder tendencies but have been able to keep them under control (no longer shop, or go to auctions, or go to yardsales) and I'm well organized. So I have a 15 year old tissue box. It's a Christmas kleenex box, green foil with a falling snow in trees design & an odd oval shape that's perfect on the toilet tank on the front hall half bath. It lives in my Christmas box and I carefully refill it every year & absolutely love seeing it again! But, it's not like if my house was on fire I'd run to look for it

It's interesting how people react to loss, when my parents died I need to get rid of everything in my house, I could barely look at anything that belonged to them. Hoarding is a ocd issue. Every case is a little different. Mostly is brought on by a trauma trigger. You can think of it this way it’s blocks out the processing skills of decision making. The fear thought pattern basically blocks off decision making. The sever ocd cases are rather painful mentally to deal with.

Tina is such a lovely person. I hope she does well. In another episode they had another update about her where she had stalled and finally she released her fathers ashes in a lovely area and was able to move on. She was so responsive to treatment. I don’t know if this might help people understand a hoarder’s motivation a bit but I am an innate hoarder, especially papers, magazines and notes as well as loads of odds and ends collected during my life. I have always had a very poor memory so I use these objects as triggers for recalling memories of past events which is why I develop an emotional attachment to things others would view as rubbish (nothing dirty or actual trash). For my family’s sake I have gradually been forcing myself to honestly evaluate and rationalise my “need” for each of these things related to the cost (to myself and family) of holding onto it. Over repeated multiple sessions I have managed to significantly reduced my hoard (about 60% rn) as well as try to avoid adding to it by via a new way method where I will now take a photo of the item I either want to remember or of objects I desire (rather than buy it). Admittedly I have over a TB of digital photos but it satisfies my need to have a tangible reminder without creating actual clutter (also reduces impulsive spending). As an aside interestingly I have recently been diagnosed with ADHD at 50 yrs old! Not sure if that has any relation or not although it might explain my natural tendency towards disorganisation and messiness despite my best efforts.

I've started decluttering my house a couple of days ago. I'm not a hoarder, but have quite a few memories, attached to objects, which I don't really need. Some of them represent bad memories, so why keep them? Yesterday I threw away a birthday card and an apology letter, I wrote to a guy that treated me poorly (to say the least)... so ridiculous. I never sent the card or the letter, but have clang to them for years. Absurd, isn't it? I still have a lot of paperwork to go through, but I already threw away quite a lot of other stuff (yayy for me). I'm fascinated by the beautiful, though complex, human connections, in this show. I also enjoy the success stories of others (truly feel their joy by proxy), that give me huge motivation to create my own success story. Just love this show!

If its important to you my advice: Keep a few cherished items but for all the other stuff, take pictures, put them in an album you can sit down with and look through to remember. Then you won't fear forgetting certain events or items. Interesting they say the trauma kicks off the hoarding(often a death) and people can't let go...but they can't let go because they aren't allowing their self to grieve. Everyone dies. There's nothing wrong with holding onto SOME things from loved ones. Heck I have 4 or 5 things my best friend left here(in the same spot) his last visit here. Then he killed himself.. But I don't hoard everything that has meaning for my entire life. There MUST be a neurological reason some people react this way and others do not. Please don't judge people.

Childhood memories and gifts; I decided to keep one large plastic bin of what I call ‘small stuff’. Instead of keeping big things, I kept the small ones. Each wrapped in paper or cloth, carefully laid in this single bin. Now, as I get gifts from family, I display them for a while, then as I get new things, I keep the small items, carefully wrap them in cloth and add them to the bin. The larger items I donate. My plan is one day, when I’m old, I can go thru the bin and remember each item, cherish them, then wrap them back up and put back into the bin. It fits in my closet under my hanging clothes. It’s an idea for hoarders to keep memories of life without filling an entire room.

Some people really live in the past. Its absolutely incredible. We all like to have memories and relive good times that passed, but for these people it just makes them blind for what lies ahead. And the more they cling to their memories the more they distance themselves from the future. Its like they stop to live in the moment and stop to make future plans. They have nothing to look forward to. They just make it worse.

When someone is depressed, they can create excuses to comfort themselves. I have seen this with my granny, she still holds onto my grandpa's memories, it's almost toxic. We donated all his belongings, except few. She doesn't hold onto things, but not ready to shift out of our old home. Also, she drifted into old memories so much, all she talks about is 70s 80s era.

Fatigue
@malovela
@malovela 2 года назад
Before I started taking meds and later got surgery for my thyroid disease, I was extremely tired almost all the time. Just overwhelming fatigue... Also, even small amounts of effort gave me heart palpitations and made me sweat buckets - often I literally had drops of sweat running down EVERY part of my body, hundreds of drops at once at any given moment - which made my hands slippery (and so less "graspy"), made everything I touched moist or wet, smelled bad, and tickled so much it drove me crazy. Rather demotivating for doing anything physical. But the fatigue was by far the worst part.

Hoarders are also just humans who need professional help. They're traumatised people dealing with a lots of psychological pain. Hoarders are very sad, suffering, heart-broken, human beings, who have lost joy, happiness and control over their lives over time carrying lots of emotional trauma. ... No-one has the right to judge. People can get very bad mental health conditions by traumatic life events. No-one would like to be a hoarder and live in a cluttered, dirty, house. They're (in my opinion strong*) humans who need kindness, hope and help from trauma informed professionals. *Strong because they hold so much pain for so much time and didn't choose suicide but hoarding instead. We should have respect and understanding for them. Like most people who are carrying trauma they want to be seen, heard and understood. They need help, they need kindness, politeness, hope, new dreams, social life, friends, family, structure, a new life...and that's not easy. They have to find again what they've lost. And that's hope and happiness in the first place. So that they can let go of all that clutter and begin a new life. To the people who don't understand hoarding: Just be kind and respectful towards those people who hoard Otherwise you just make it worse. Please don't hurt those people they're hurt enough. They need trauma therapy.
