A one dollar can opener from the dollar store is a bad idea. I bought one and it broke the first time I used it. If you are depending on a can opener for camping or shtf, buy a quality one. A can opener is too valuable of an item to risk it not working.

I actually just got back from the dollar store and then I saw this. I usually go there to stock up on wax candles, canned goods, rice, medical supplies, supplements, ect. Thankfully everything at my local store is 1$ flat. I recall this time where I was leaving the store and I overheard a group of women say: "only poor people shop there lol" and I found myself thinking: smart people who wanna save money on everyday items shop there.

I have always found that you get what you pay for. I would like to add though, not sure if they occur in Canada, but here in the US, Estate Sales are all around. Amazing places to find great stuff cheap. I went to a few today and loaded up well. At one, I bought over two hundred, yes two hundred candles for $8. Not little birthday candles, real ones. At another sale, I bought a box of rope for six bucks. In a store, the rope that I bought today would have been at least $60.

@Rusty Hussler ten years later!! Holy Cr@p! No problem with the length buddy. I give you a little hint in life you may already know but if you want to find out if someone is a thief ask them. “ Do you think most people steal?” If they say ‘yes’ then chances are you are talking with one. They self justify by telling themselves everyone else does it “so why shouldn’t I? “ My grandfather worked at a pawnshop it was his little test he wouldn’t buy from anyone who felled it. Give it a try sometime..... and yes you must be very careful not to buy stolen articles when buying second hand even at flea markets or garage sales. Always trust your instincts.

I mentioned this exact thing and also as it relates to homeless people in a forum once and got all kinds of heat for it. Fact is, prison is a fantastic example of how people are seriously resourceful when their access is severely restricted. People making sewing needles out of staples, weapons out of a toothbrush and a newspaper, etc. Homeless people are daily faced with the prospect of trying to find some kind of shelter in a dangerous and inhospitable environment, looking for food, bartering goods and services, etc. Just because these types aren't respected in society, most people assume they have nothing to offer.

Maybe a bit of silicone caulking or other form of sealant would make these last longer? It's probably that the humidity in the air is getting inside them, and when it gets cold in the nights it condenses onto the circuit board. Someone with more electronics expertise may be able to suggest what you could do if you can open it up, in order to protect the board inside to last longer.

The double carabiner bungee cords are great. I use one (from Dollarama too) to carry groceries over my shoulders, because I usually walk to most shops, but also typically want to maximize what I can stock up on in fewer total trips. Which became even more relevant with this pandemic. I doubled over the bungee cord and wrapped it with some fabric to shorten the total length to about 2ft, and give it some padding around it. I fill my backpack with the heavier/dense stuff, and then split the remaining goods into two reusable bags. One bag for each carabiner clip. I sling the now bungee-cord connected bags over my neck, after putting on my backpack, and then I can walk or bike with hands free. The two clipped bags hang in front, balancing out the backback weight, which is why I prefer this a bit over simply having a larger capacity hiking bag for now. Yeah, I could probably just buy another backpack and wear it on my chest, but this way, I have a lot of flexible carrying capacity with me in my bag at all times, should I be on an errand and discover a good sale on something or the bulk of lighter objects would be a waste of backpack space.

You have some good suggestions. I like the cheap coffee filters, since there's a good chance I'll never use them. The dried bleach/pool treatment tip was helpful. Earlier this year, when we couldn't find bleach Walmart had lots of pool treatment chemicals. I suspected that they'd work but wasn't sure. Since regular bleach has a limited shelf life, the dried stuff looks useful. I think I'll pick some up and include a tip sheet on how to use it in case I forget. I noticed that the over the counter meds at my dollar store usually have about one year on their stated shelf life. I live in the the south, and the interior of a vehicle can easily get over 120 F in the summer. Even top quality meds will break down in that heat. I keep an assortment of these cheap meds in my vehicle first aid kit. Every so often I pitch the expired stuff and I'm only out $20 or so. Some solar yard lights sell for as low as a $1 each. Keep in mind that those are inexpensive solar battery chargers. Where else will you find something like that for one dollar? I like the ones that have a switch that let's you turn them on and off. I also look for the ones that have easily removable batteries. Most solar lights run on AA rechargeable batteries that are 400 to 600 mha. Those don't have a long run time in some devices, but they are better than nothing. They will run some LED flashlights on low power for a long time. You can use the light itself for interior lighting (think a kids night light), or recharge your better batteries in the lights. You can charge a higher mha battery over the course of a couple of days if you turn it off so that the solar light is not coming on at night and using up your battery. I have a couple of LED lights than run on a single AA. Their lowest settings claim 45 to 60 hour run times. With 8 or 10 solar lights I can keep a couple of flash lights, or a head lamp running for a long time. Whenever I come across non working solar lights I try to scavenge the rechargeable batteries. More than half the time when the light doesn't work it is not the battery, but the seal around the solar panel had failed allowing the internals that control the charging or diode to fail. I throw the batteries into a smart charger and they usual come back to life. I use these cheap, low mha batteries around the house for clocks, cheap household flashlights, and my computer mouse. About once a year, or when a big storm is heading my way, I'll make sure they are all fully charged.

Here are a couple + things I find good to keep on hand. For repairs where stitching is required: large-eye needles, large roll of dental floss, reel of nylon fishing line. (These are also good for finer tying requirements - when paracord too bulky.) For firestarter, Dollarama has a 12-squares package of saturated sawdust for $1.25. Other sources sell 48-squares package for $7.00. So, very good deal and they work well. I always keep these in stock for my Motorhome’s mini wood stove. (They are usually sold near the candles section of the store.) I love regularly trolling thru Dollarama and Dollar Tree. Great help to learn where things are located and discover new finds. Cheers!
