This series takes me to the Wilderness of Northern Maine were I spend 100 hours completely alone with no one else in sight or within many many miles. In search of the illusive and rare Musky fish. Avg temp around -20 for this trip on the Mercury with the coldest temperature I have ever seen or slept in a tent through. 6.5 hour drive into the North Maine Woods. 5 Part Series. This is episode 4 of 5. Last chance to catch Muskie. Brutal Cold weather below minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit. All comments and questions answered for subscribers.

Joe. Big big fan of your work. Been watching for 2+ years and last winter decided I wanted to try my hand at staying overnight on the ice. Happened to be one of the coldest nights I remember in a long time out on moosehead -32 last I remember. But because of watching your videos I was more than prepared for it. Thanks for the confidence you give other people that want to try it. Me and my uncle are already planing the next trip. Keep up the great work and I'm looking forward to this year's content. God bless

Wisconsin has native muskies and stocked. Mostly stocked in the southern half and mostly native in the northern half. We have such strict limits and a short season on them that rarely anyone ever keeps one. For Example, I live in the southern end of the state and some of the lakes that have them by me have a 50 inch minimum, which at that point is pretty much a trophy fish. 32 inch is our statewide minimum on lakes that don't have special regulations. And by the way, our state fish is the muskellunge. And I've heard both "muskies" and "muskie" for the plyral form, so who knows?

Two books about the New England outdoors that I really like are We Took To The Woods by Louise Dickinson Rich, a true story that takes place near Richardson Lake in Maine and Look To The Mountain by LeGrand Cannon Jr., a novel that takes place in and around the Lakes Region of NH.

It’s like anything in nature, there needs to be culls whether it is deer, bear, moose, Brook trout, salmon , pike, or Muskie. This particular lake is now stunted from 29-36 because the Muskie have overtaken it and there is very little forage now. It is overrun with Muskie if you can believe it. I think the best thing for the lake would be to keep a lot of them but where as I don’t need to Keep any I decided to let almost all of them go. If 50 percent of them were culled or harvested the remaining fifty percent would be able to grow much larger . Right now it doesn’t produce any over 36 inches with the majority being 30 inches. In Maine there is actually no size or bag limit on them and all of them can be kept. It’s a weird thing. Does the harvest or cull make sense?

Keep em coming Joe! Love the videos and the stories. You’re just a genuine and likable type a guy. The story at the end of the end of this one was great. I’ve thought about that for a long time and have had a hard time putting into words as well as you did. Pushing oneself in every aspect of life definitely makes future tasks in the future that would have seemed huge at one point feel smaller. Working hard as a younger guy, running chainsaws, rolling logs, clearing brush, helping my pops with tasks definitely helped me with many challenges in life. Anyways, thanks Joe! Zach in Michigan.

Great video Sir. I can totally relate to the story you shared about carrying buckets. I played those games when I was shoveling roofs or shoveling out trees for a logging outfit. I could shovel 150 trees a day at the end of the winter. I learned a lot about myself and what I could actually do physically. My coldest night outside was -17° on Valentine's Day weekend 1998. It was just after the ice storm and all I heard was crashing trees all night. I'm not going to lie to you, I was scared. I also felt stupid for not realizing the danger of falling trees after that storm. I was in a tent in a 20° bag. It was cold. Cold enough to freeze my water bottle. I got some coffee going in the morning and felt good about getting through the night. It was the coldest night of my life. Keep making videos, you're very good at it.. WCW

I completely relate to your story of carrying buckets and pushing and challenging oneself. I was fortunate enough to have similar experiences growing up with an older brother who pushed me to do more on our hobby farm. Then I worked on dairy farms here in Wisconsin milking cows and baling hay. All those experiences helped shape who I am today. Thank you for being you and pontificating and telling these stories. Hey Joe, you are amazing !!! Great content, learn so much from you!!, Plus I love your humor.. Glad I found your videos! Question for you, since your holes are always freezing would those black rubber hole covers work or is it better to fish with sunlight go through the ice so the fish see your bait!? Thanks Joe!

Doin great this year Joe, always look forward to the next video. So cool watching a local guy succeed at what he loves! I’m sure you have read the mike bowditch series by Paul Doiron. But if not check them out!

Oh my word Joe, those were some brutal temperatures that you had to deal with. That was crazy. But glad to see you made it through without any problems. I enjoyed your story towards the end. That was great!..and being a morning person myself?...I love breakfast anytime of the day. So that was cool to see that big meal for dinner. 😁

Man that's cold. I remember in 94 in Sherman it was _40 or below the whole month of February and I'm a heating tech I remember it well. Haven't experienced it since

Dead bait worked well! By piercing the swim bladder, the bait also gives off its smell better. This makes it easier for the predatory fish to find it. In what diameter do you use the fluorocarbon? I use DIA 1.1mm...even a northern pike can cut it if its thinner. Great video as always Joe!
