100 Hours ALONE in the FRIGID NORTH : Catching the Skunk!

This series takes me to the Wilderness of Northern Maine were I spend 100 hours completely alone with no one else in sight or within many many miles. In search of the illusive and rare Musky fish. Avg temp around -20 for this trip on the Mercury with the coldest temperature I have ever seen or slept in a tent through. 6.5 hour drive into the North Maine Woods. This is part two of the 5 Part Series. Tough day of fish catching for me with some fun stuff around camp. All comments and questions answered for subscribers.

It really is great that when you were cutting that tree. You showed respect for what you were doing. Being alone where you were could of been a bad deal really quickly. It's not your first rodeo for sure. Great to see.

The stank of skunk in the winter goes away fast! Summer skunk is different ha ha. Do love that you enjoy reading a book in a tent on a frozen lake. I keep a book in my pickup all year incase I break down or get stuck. And always have one when I fish. I have not yet caught a musky but seen one air dance on a rod and reel with a smelt. I think the core of your percolator was frozen. Learned from you to prefill percolator before lights out. Thanks for the videos Joe. Stay warm from North Bay

Anyone can get skunked ice fishing. It not only happens, but quite often. Especially, in Maine. I know a farmer who caught 1 ten-pound lake trout in 10 years. He tried everything. Even threw his cow into the lake. A friend caught 1 fish in 2 1/2 months of fishing every day. That's a bit slow for me. We (2 of us) averaged 15 togue and salmon a day just a few hundred yards away (not these baby fish you have to hold towards the camera to make look huge). He wouldn't move his shack or change his line depth. He was committed. I've had a different mentality. More utilitarian. I go fishing to catch fish. Everything else is secondary. I've also taken a scientific approach. Long before we had all of these new gadgets (which I love!). Fishing with black pickerel line, dead bait blown by newspaper on an alder bush in a jagged 3-foot-deep hole cut with a truck spring ice chisel. Remember those days? Rather than throwing our choice of offering, why not find out what the fish like? Countless experiments. Pry info from everyone. Interrogate. You cater to what the fish wants, regardless of how many thousands of dollars you paid for your fish finder. When you land your first fish, everything changes. You aren't going to starve that day. You remember what works and build upon it. And when all you've tried still doesn't work? You pray like a man who doesn't want to go home hungry.

Great question, The perch were actually too small to catch and it is illegal to use them as bait in Maine. Even though they live in that body of water and the fish eat them naturally.
@naterobertson8843

If you catch a fish , that you are going to clean and eat , can you legally use any part of that fish , as bait ? When I lived in Minnesota, I would take my hook and scoop out an eye of that fish and stick it on my hook. I eventually found out that it was not aloud, in the state. But that eyeball would stay on that hook forever.
